Chapter Twenty-two: Common Knowledge
Chase's P.O.V.
I sigh and reluctantly open the door a crack.
"There he is," she smiles brightly.
"Can I help you?" I ask bitterly.
That proves it. Donald and Tasha are back from the convention.
"Chase, honey," she begins.
"I have a headache and I'm not in the mood for lectures," I say sternly.
"Donald doesn't know how to handle things…in a matter of a few days he'll open his eyes and everything will be okay," she assures.
"Davenport…he promised he wouldn't send us away…and because….because I found the one I love he does exactly what he promised not to do. I can handle this," I sniffle.
"I understand sweetie," she brushes a cool hand over my face.
The door opens wider.
"You're burning up," she states.
"I'm fine," I whisper.
She purses her lips in a straight line.
"I miss Adam," I confess.
"I know sweetie…come on get ready for school," she says softly.
I nod a bit trying not to move my head too much because of a pounding headache.
I go back in and start dressing. Without realizing what I put on I went outside to the kitchen. Tasha smiles sadly at me and looks at my t-shirt. I look down and notice why. I'm wearing, yet again, another shirt that used to be Adam's. I smile sadly as well.
I sit down and feel a chill run down my back when Adam sits next to me.
"Nice shirt shorty," he teases.
"Gee thanks," I roll my eyes.
"Hope you grow into it," he smiles.
"Joke all you want it still looks better on me," I smile back.
I guess I could get used to this.
Davenport walks in after that glancing our way wearily. Of course we turn around and ignore each other. And of course we miss the small smile tugging at the corner of his mouth.
"Morning Chase…Adam," he regards.
"Morning," I mumble displeased.
"G'morning," Adam greets happily.
"Ready for school?" he asks.
"Definitely," Adam answers.
"I guess, I'm going ahead," I announce.
"Don't you need a ride?" he offers kindly.
"No thanks I prefer walking," I reply.
I skip breakfast and walk past him. I grab my bag and make an exit. I hear Davenport sigh.
I put on my earphones and blast the music as loud as I can handle. Listening to A Little Faster by There for Tomorrow I make my way to school. I stop short when I feel someone behind. I turn down the music and enhance my hearing. I hear footsteps and pray that it's none of the jocks. Luck is on my side, it wasn't. I wasn't that lucky as I turn to be greeted by none other than Owen.
"Hey," he smiles awkwardly.
"Hi," I reply back a bit shyly.
"I guess I should've talked to you before," he begins.
"It's okay…it was a lot to take in," I say.
"No Chase…I know why you guys didn't tell us and we understand…It's just hard I needed time to think," he says.
"And I get it we're freaks I understand," I ignore him.
"Chase listen clearly," he takes away my earphones.
I blink once twice and three times finally seeing what he's getting at.
"Adam's my friend…and so are you and I don't care about you guys being bionic," he continues.
"He promised not to send us away…but that changed…he would get mad and that's why we couldn't tell," I explain.
"I know," he says rather sadly.
"What of Bree?"
"I talked to her and I've agreed to talk to Davenport. I know this is hard Chase but if you need me I'll be there for you," he smiles.
"Good luck," I roll my eyes at the mention of Davenport all respect lost.
"Still not talking?"
"Not even remotely close," I agree.
He nods, "you should try reasoning with him."
"I…I'm scared that he'll just send me away," I admit.
"Didn't he promise not to…I mean you just said he wouldn't," he whispers.
"I don't want to risk it after what happened. He has been a bit worried though," I add.
"Worried?"
"I'm sick," I answer.
"Sick?"
"Stop repeating words," I chuckle.
"Repeating?"
I give him a pointed glare.
"Okay. Okay. But how sick?" he asks concerned.
"Nausea, lightheaded, and fatigue," I list my symptoms.
Owen burst into laughter causing me to glare at him again.
"What?" I ask getting rather irritated.
"You sound like your pregnant," he laughs then adds in a more sober matter, "maybe you should take a test."
Now it was my turn to burst into laughter, "I think…its common knowledge that guys don't get pregnant."
"Then no harm in checking," he shrugs playfully.
Ten Minutes Later:
"I can't believe I actually let you drag me into this," I mutter, "I mean I'm actually skipping school!"
"I bought it so be happy. The guy at the store stared at me disbelievingly and before I left he said congratulations!" Owen remarks.
I bark out a laugh, "It's the least since this is all your idea."
Davenport's P.O.V.
Tasha leaves soon after Chase and it's just Adam and me sitting around the table.
"Are you planning on attending school?" I ask.
"Probably," he shrugs before eating cereal.
"I think we need to talk," I get straight to the point.
He straightens up and all jokes aside looks at me with tired eyes.
"Are you tired?" I ask.
"I haven't slept much lately," he admits with a shrug.
"Why?" I question.
"I may be an idiot but I'm not stupid," he glares.
I look at him slightly amused.
"What do you want to talk about?" he narrows his gaze.
"Adam I know you're still mad but you'll get over it-"
"No I won't! If this is what you came to talk about then forget it," he grits ready to go out the door.
"Do you honestly think you loved Chase?" I inquire curiously wondering how long I can keep this up.
"No…I know I still love him…He…Completes me," he answers.
I sigh.
"Mr. D…I know you can't believe it…I know it's hard to understand. I love Chase with all of my strength. You have no idea how he makes me feel," he begins.
I look into his faraway gaze and a smile tugs at the corner of my lips again. I have never seen Adam so happy. Or Chase for that matter. Chase has always been a bit depressed between being bullied and underappreciated. I know that I'm about to make the right choice.
"Adam?" I call softly.
"Hmm?" he snaps from his daze.
"What would you do to be by Chase's side again?" I ask with a mischievous gleam in my eyes.
"Walk in over and stand next to him duh," he answers.
I roll my eyes.
"No Adam. I mean go back out with him," I clarify.
"Anything…To tell you the truth I was going to take him away from all this…but…he ended it before I could even suggest it," He responds truthfully.
"As in runaway?" my eyes snap open in amazement.
"Yes…I love Chase…with everything that I am did you just not hear what I said?" he smiles brightly.
"Then…I'm giving you permission to…date again," I say.
He looks at me and then begins to laugh. I raise my eyebrow slightly taken aback.
"You are? Oh yeah right!"
I look sternly at him. He stops and turns serious.
"You're not kidding?" he says rather hopeful.
I shake my head.
"Why?" he wonders completely baffled.
"Tasha said that I should give you a try. I'm not completely ecstatic about my two bionic sons dating but…I can attempt to accept this relationship. I can't see you two this way so it may take time but Eddie sent me very convincing fotage," I smile.
At that moment Eddie thought it was best to make an appearance.
"You're welcome!" he shouts.
I roll my eyes and Adam laughs. He's smiling like a doofus and this smile reaches his eyes. Something I havent seen for days.
"Come on let's go paintball fighting," I say opening the elevator which leads to many secret rooms.
Chase's P.O.V.
"What's taking so long?" I ask impatiently.
We snuck back in the 'empty' house to take the stupid test. Owen ignores my comment and goes back to drawing in his sketch book.
"Nice lab," he says under his breath.
"Well since you know it's only fair," I reply.
"So this is where you guys used to sleep in?" he points to the capsules looking up.
"Yeah," I nod.
"Hmm…This one's Bree's right?" he smiles.
Another nod. He knows her so well it's disturbingly cute.
Then the dreaded timer goes off. I feel so nervous. There really is no reason I should be so nervous. I'm a super genius there is no way a guy can…expect. It's impossible. I know the statistics and it's a known fact that even five year olds can say it. I grab the white stick and my heart rate speeds up until I feel it's going to burst. And then the lab's door opens.
