Chapter Twenty-six: Something's wrong
Chase's P.O.V.
Adam was being so sweet it was cute. He was absolutely ecstatic about the baby. I am too.
"Morning princess," Owen smiled.
"Hey," I wave deciding to ignore his comment.
"Have a question," he says.
"What is it?"
"I want a picture of the baby," he says abruptly.
It's more of a statement or a demand instead of a question.
"...that's going to be hard...can you wait six more months and two weeks?" I ask.
He rolls his eyes, "ultrasound," he clarifies.
I smile, "baby's a bit small to get him looking remotely human."
"When's your next?"
"Hmm...two weeks, when I'm in my third month. Baby should look less like a sea monkey when I'm done with my first trimester," I answer with a smile.
"If the baby acquires any better looks by two weeks then I want one," he demands.
"Can I ask why?"
"It's a...surprise?" He answers.
"Why is it phrased as a question?" I ask intent on making him falter.
He just smiles wryly and walks away, "don't worry congrats again!"
I sigh. The first bell rings and even though I feel a bit like crap I make a dash to class before being late. The morning classes were boring as usual and for once I'm too tired to actually pay attention. For lunch I meet Leo in the hall.
"Hey," he grins.
"Hey," I smile back tiredly.
He leads the way to the cafeteria. I stop short. He turns around to face me expectantly.
"Something wrong?"
"Can we...er wait for Adam?" I ask with a blush.
He raises an eyebrow waiting for me to continue.
"...please?" I add.
"Sure?"
I sigh again in relief. Adam should be coming from gym so he's probably changing. A few minutes later Adam appears. He lights up as soon as he sees me.
"Chasey," he calls.
"Hi," I interlock our hands.
"Why aren't you inside already?" He asks.
"We were waiting for you," I reply.
"Something wrong?" He turns to Leo.
Leo merely shrugs before leaving us alone.
"Baby what's wrong?" He repeats more concerned.
"I...we missed you," I whisper instead.
His smile grows wider.
"Really?"
"Yes," I nod.
"You'd tell me if anything's wrong right?"
"Of course," I assure.
"I love you both," he says in the same hushed voice I used.
"We love you too," I reply.
He grabs my hand and leads me to the cafeteria.
When we're seated at our table talking until Adam becomes a bit insufferable.
"Please," Adam begs.
"No Adam don't make me," I whine.
"Chase you have to eat," he insists.
"Please don't make me, that's disgusting," I complain starting to get annoyed.
He sighs exasperated.
"Adam that will only make me puke...in the end I won't get energy out of it," I explain.
"Adam," Bree chides.
"Chase," he warns.
"No," I pout angrily.
"Eat something!" He pleads.
I stare at the tray in front of me disgustingly. Leo arrives at that moment and sits beside me with his own tray. I peer to see his food. It moves! My stomach churns and I stand abruptly rushing to the bathroom. I barely make into a stall before kneeling down and puking, again.
Adam rushes after me. I look at him as he pulls me close to his chest. A sob threatens to escape me. Damn hormones.
"It's okay baby," Adam whispers.
"I hate this," I croak.
"I know," he sighs.
I launch forward again and I can hear Adam cringe. I stay in the same position until I am left dry heaving. I wipe my mouth with the back of my clammy hand. Adam pulls me up and hugs me tight. I still have the stale taste of vomit in my mouth and just thinking about it threatens bile to rise again.
"We have to talk to Mr. D this is getting ridiculous," he mutters.
I give him a weak nod. He lets go of me so I can at least rinse. As I finish I stare at my disheveled hair and pale complexion. Something is not right, I can feel it but before I notice, I'm swaying to the side. The first thing that comes to mind is that I need to protect my baby. I place my hand on the barely noticeable bump and wait hit the ground. Adam catches my limp body before I fall and get hurt. My eyes droop close.
Adam's P.O.V.
I catch Chase as he falls.
"Chase!" I call frantically.
I shake him and urge him to wake up.
"Wake up please!" I beg.
I brush my hand on his forehead. He's burning up. I pull out my phone and dial Mr. D. It rings once, twice, on the third ring he answers.
"Adam?" He asks.
"Chase is bad real bad," I say.
"What happened?" He asks.
I can hear papers being stacked and fabric rustles.
"Chase threw up again but this time he passed out, he has a fever and isn't waking up!"
"Okay I'm on my way," he hangs up.
I hold his body closer to mine.
"Chasey," l mumble.
I sit with Chase cradled in my arms in the nurse's office. The door swings open to the room and the nurse leaves us alone.
"Did you check if there's spotting? Any bleeding?" He asks.
I shake my head.
Mr. D looks a bit more relieved at the information.
"He does have a slight fever," he notes.
"It went down a little but it's slowly rising," I add.
He looks at me sadly.
"Can you carry him to the car outside?" He asks after a moment.
I nod before picking Chase up without jostling him. The drive home is quite except for the occasional whimpering from Chase and the questions if he's fine. We enter the house and I deposit Chase on the white bed he was in a few months ago gently. Just this morning we were both happy about the baby and now it's like the world is coming to an end.
"Adam…can you…please wait outside?" he asks softly.
I stare at him in disbelief, "you're asking me to leave my pregnant boyfriend alone?"
"I need to check him and the baby," he says.
"No! I'm staying," I argue.
"Adam!" he raises his voice a bit.
"But Chase-"
"Will be fine the sooner I see him alone!" he assures.
Reluctantly I place a goodbye kiss to Chase's burning and flushed face. He whimpers again and it takes everything I have to walk out. I stare at his pale form as the doors slide closed.
