Chapter 5
"You want some breakfast?" Kate asked Ana.
"No thanks".
"Ana...".
"Kate I'm just not very hungry okay and I have to go out anyway. I'll see you later".
Ana grabbed her bag and left the house. She didn't really have anywhere she needed to be but she didn't want to be in the house with Kate obsessing over what she ate, or what she didn't eat.
Ana had her appointment at the hospital in a few days but she didn't know what she was going to say to them, she knew that she should say something to the doctor about what she had been doing but at the same time she didn't have to admit that she wasn't getting better and it was something she needed help with this, she never had been very good at saying that.
It had been a few days since Ana and Kate had Elliot and Christian over for dinner and she had been avoiding him since, she wasn't really sure why but she knew that he would have all sorts of questions for her that she didn't want to answer. She also didn't want to have to make an excuse as to why she couldn't stay at his house, there was no way she could get rid of her food when she was there and she didn't want him to see that she had lost more weight. She really didn't know how she was going to keep it up.
Ana decided to spend the day in town, she hadn't been to the used book stores she loved in a while so she was looking forward to seeing any new stock they had in.
"Look I'm really worried about her Christian. I know she says she is fine but last night I heard her in the bathroom and it sounded like she was being sick" Kate said.
"No Christian, she isn't sick. She isn't eating a lot and I don't think this is the first time she has done it".
"I don't think the two of us ambushing her is going to help her".
"Fine. This isn't a good idea but fine. I will see you at 5".
"Bye".
Kate felt bad for calling Christian behind Ana's back again but she didn't know what else to do. She was so worried about Ana and she didn't know what to do. It was 2pm now and she hadn't heard off Ana. She had tried phoning and texting her but there was no reply.
Kate had plans to meet Elliot at work in an hour so she decided to go and start getting ready. She hadn't seen him in a couple of days so she was really looking forward to it. She decided to put her worries about Ana out of her head until Christian got over tonight.
Christian stalked up and down his front room. He wished that he knew what to do about Ana. He partly wished that he wasn't in this situation and he wished that Ana wasn't having to go through this. She hadn't returned any calls or his texts in the last couple of days, he couldn't help but wonder if this was why.
He wanted things to go back to the way they were before, before he made that stupid mistake and before he asked her to sign that stupid damn contract. He didn't know what he had been thinking, he could see now that he didn't want any of that stuff, all he wanted was to be with Ana. He would give everything he had up for Ana.
"Would you like something to eat Mr Grey?" Mrs Jones asked.
"No thank you".
"A drink then?".
Christian waved dismissal at his house keeper.
Mrs Jones sighed heavily. "Mt Grey I hope you don't me saying so but you seem a little worried about something, is it anything I can help with?".
Christian debated whether to tell Mrs Jones.
"I'm not sure. Its about Ana".
"Is she alright?" Mrs Jones sounded worried.
"Not really. She was in hospital last week because she fainted".
"Oh dear. Is she okay now?".
Christian was touched by her concern.
"I'm not really sure. She fainted because she hasn't been eating, her friend Kate told me that she has an eating disorder and apparently it has chosen to rear its ugly head now" Christian explained.
"How is Ana dealing with that?".
"Well her friend Kate thinks that she is getting worse, and I have no idea what I am supposed to be doing to help her. I'm going over there tonight to talk to her but other than that I'm pretty much in the dark".
"Christian, this seems to me like something that Ana needs some help with. She may not admit that to anyone just yet but maybe you should get some professional advice".
"That is a good idea. Thank you Mrs Jones, and something to eat would be great".
"Shall I bring it through to your office?".
"Yes please Mrs Jones, thank you".
Christian headed to his office. He knew what he should do now. Firstly he was going to do a little bit of research and then he was going to phone Dr Flynn to see if he could accompany him to see Ana this evening.
By the time Christian got off the phone with Dr Flynn it was 4.30pm. "Damn it". Christian got his jacket and car keys and left to go to Ana's. He had given Dr Flynn the address and arranged to meet him there.
"Christian, hello" Dr Flynn said approaching his car.
"Hello John, thank you for agreeing to come. It means a lot".
"Its not a problem, I thought Anastasia was a lovely young woman and she clearly means a lot to you".
"She does. Shall we go inside? We're a little late".
The two men walked to the door and Christian knocked.
"Hi Christian. Whose this?" Kate asked.
"I am John Flynn, Christian asked me to come with him tonight, I am a therapist".
"You bought a therapist with you?!" Kate yelled. "I asked you here so we could tackle Ana together not have her committed".
"No one is being committed Kate, I asked Dr Flynn to come because I don't have much knowledge or experience with eating disorders and I thought he could add a professional perspective".
Kate huffed. "Well you should come in. Ana doesn't know you're coming yet".
"Ana, uh, Christian is here to see you" Kate called from the front room, she was suddenly extremely nervous about this. She didn't like that Christian had brought a therapist with him.#
Ana came out of her bedroom wearing a dressing gown and slippers.
"Hey Christian".
"Hi" he gave her a kiss. "Do you want to come sit down?".
"Uh, sure".
Christian pulled Ana to the front room.
"Oh, hi Dr Flynn. What are you doing here" Ana said nervously.
"I think we should all sit down and talk" Kate said.
"So sit, talk" Ana shot back. "What is this about?".
"Ana, Kate called today and said that she didn't feel you were getting better, actually she thought you had been making yourself be sick on purpose" Christian said and Kate groaned.
"Is that true Kate? Did you really pick up the phone to 'tell' on me again?!".
"No it wasn't like that Ana, I'm worried about you and I didn't know what else to do. I heard you being sick last night".
"Yes Kate, I was sick last night but that's because I wasn't feeling very well. I am sorry, I didn't realise that wasn't allowed anymore".
"Ana, its not the first time you've done it and you seemed totally fine to me".
"What exactly am I being accused of here?".
"No one is accusing you of anything Anastasia, like Kate said she is just worried about you and so is Christian" Dr Flynn said trying to mediate the situation. "Have you been making yourself sick though?".
"No I haven't and I don't appreciate people insinuating that I have" Ana snapped.
"Then why are you still losing weight Ana? I saw you last night and you are thinner than you were when you came back from the hospital"
"I don't know Kate. O h my god, do you really think I would do that and then lie to you?" Ana demanded.
"Anastasia, it is a small step from anorexia to bulimia. Especially when you are in situations where someone will notice if you have been eating or not" Dr Flynn said.
"I honestly can not believe you too" Ana yelled and stormed into her bedroom.
'How the hell do they know?' Ana thought to herself. She could not believe that she had let herself be figured out so easily.
"Ana please listen to us" Christian said, shutting her bedroom door. "We just want to help you".
"There is nothing that you need to help me with Christian. I do not make myself be sick okay, do you hear me".
Ana squeezed past Christian and left the house, she got in her car and just drove. Once again she had no idea where she was going but she just had to go somewhere.
Ana drove and drove until she ended up in Portland where she got out of her car to walk. And walk. And walk. Ana eventually ended up at a bar and kept ordering drinks. She wanted to stop thinking. She knew that she was going to have to deal with this and soon but for now she just wanted to drink.
"Ana, what are you doing here?" Elliot asked her approaching her.
"Hi, Elliot" she slurred.
"What are you doing?".
"Having a drink".
"Everything alright?" he asked taking a seat next to her.
"Nope".
"Do you wanna talk about it?".
"S'barrassing".
"Kate told me about why you were in the hospital and about their 'meeting' with you tonight if that helps".
"Kinda does. They accused me of stuff".
"Yeah, Kate told me that too. Is it true?".
Ana looked guilty and then giggled.
"I'll take that as a yes then" Elliot sighed. "Can I ask why?".
"I don't know" Ana whispered.
"You don't know why or you don't know if I can ask?".
"Don't know why".
"Okay, well I'm gonna get you some water and we are going to talk".
Ana nodded after Elliot had left her table.
"Okay, so drink this water, you really need to sober up".
Ana took a sip.
"Why are you pushing my brother away?" Elliot asked.
"I didn't realise that I was".
"He told me that aside from tonight he hasn't heard from you since we both came over for dinner, you haven't been replying to his texts, returning his phone calls, nothing".
"I couldn't".
"Why? I haven't seen my brother with anyone except you and I really don't want him getting hurt".
"Christian is the one who does the hurting, not me".
"What does that mean?".
Ana sighed. "Doesn't matter".
"No, what did you mean? You have me curious".
"Christian is very controlling is all".
"Well I know that. What did you mean about Christian being the one who does the hurting".
"Nothing Elliot" Ana said feeling more sober now. "Just forget I said anything please".
"Are you saying my brother hurt you? What did he do?".
"Nothing Elliot, really" Ana said, "I need to get home".
"You can't drive in this state, let me drive you".
"My car..."
"Will be fine where it is for tonight, you can get someone to take you to get this car tomorrow".
"Okay, a ride would be great. Thanks".
The two of them walked to Elliot's car and he tried to get out of her what she had meant.
It felt like the journey home was going to take forever to Ana. Elliot quit trying to talk to her about Christian just after they got in the car which Ana was glad for.
Christian was still at the house when Ana got back.
"Ana, where have you been?" Christian demanded.
"Just out".
"You're drunk".
"I'm not drunk, I had a few drinks".
"Well we still need to talk about what happened earlier Ana. I believe Kate's theory about what's been going on".
Ana rolled her eyes. "There is nothing going on why can't you believe that?".
"Okay, if that's what you want me to believe then I will leave it for now, but if I see you losing more weight Ana I will take you to the hospital".
"That's not what I want you to believe Christian, its the truth" Ana lied.
Christian nodded. Ana knew he still didn't believe it but she was kind of glad he was going to let it lie.
"Do you want to watch a film?" Christian asked.
"No, I'm really tired. I need to get some sleep" Ana said.
"Okay well I will call you tomorrow".
Ana nodded. "Okay".
Christian leaned in for a kiss but Ana moved to the door to let him out.
As soon as the door was shut Ana slid and sat by the door. She put her head in her hands and cried. She hated keeping this from Christian but she hated keeping it from Kate even more.
Ana pulled herself together enough to get to her bedroom, she fell asleep as soon as her head hit the pillow.
