ENTRY 2
WHAT DO WE DO NOW
"Why'd you run off?" Edward spoke from behind where she stood staring at the pink-tinged sky.
She exhaled, steeling herself to face him. "I just needed some air."
Disbelief colored his features as he studied hers. "You know we're literally in the wilderness, right? Nothing but wide-open space all around us. How much more air could you possibly get?"
Bella shrugged. "I guess I needed different air. You don't need to worry. Go back to your date." The truth was, watching Edward sit and laugh with Lauren caused her stomach to churn. She had no one to blame but herself, but that didn't mean she wanted to sit across from them as if her heart wasn't breaking. She'd run down the dock, putting distance between them so she could school her features. If she couldn't, it would be a very long, torturous weekend for them.
"What's really going on? Where's Jake? Em just said he wasn't coming."
The explanation for his absence stalled on her tongue. Since there had already been too many half-truths uttered between them, she blurted it out before she could second-guess herself. "We broke up."
Edward couldn't hide his shock at her confession. They had been together for years, as much as it pained him.
"Why?"
"I'm pregnant," she whispered.
A crestfallen look eclipsed his face as his shoulders sagged. His expression soon morphed into one of rage. "That bastard broke up with you because you're pregnant? I'm going to kick his ass." Edward seethed and turned back to the campsite, but Bella rested her hand on his elbow, halting his movement.
She pulled back, ringing her hands in front of her. "It's not his."
"What… who…"
"It's yours." She barreled on, laying her truths out between them. Now that she'd started talking, she couldn't seem to stop. "I know we're not … and you have Lauren … I didn't plan. I'm sorry. This wasn't how I thought I'd tell you."
Flashes of that night two months ago flickered behind his eyelids. The crackle in the air between them. Feeling drawn together like magnets. The fevered kisses. The hurried way they shed their clothing. How their bodies molded together. Lying there, skin-to-skin, their breath coming in short bursts. Her face full of regret as reality set in. How things changed after that. The distance in the weeks that followed.
"Why didn't you tell me?" His voice wavered, as tears pooled in his emerald eyes.
"I was scared. I'd planned to, and then when you showed up with her, I knew … I couldn't. Do you have any idea what it feels like—to be in love with your best friend and watch them happy with someone else, to know that you had the power to make things turn out differently?"
"I do."
It was Bella's turn to be shocked.
"I'm not sure how you never saw it before, but I'm in love with you. I've been in love with you."
"So what do we do now?"
