Chapter Forty: Missed You
Davenport's P.O.V.
I look up from the newspaper as the door swings open. Adam walks in with two backpacks slung over his shoulder. Chase shuffles behind him like a small child. He reminds me of the five year old trailing behind his older brother. I get up and take the bags almost dropping them in the process.
"Hey," I smile kindly.
"Hi," Adam replies.
Chase merely gives me a small wave. The very last time I saw them, aside from an hour ago, was a month ago when we fought. Only now clearly seeing them I notice the changes in both. Adam looks more mature and tired from obvious work. Chase looks just as exhausted from being pregnant but with a subtle radiance to him.
"How are you?" I ask Chase.
"Tired," he answers with a forced smile.
I nod understandingly as he stands by Adam.
"...w-what happened to M-Marcus?" He asks in a quiet voice.
I sigh expecting this, "he...umm...he was far too gone...irreparable."
His hazel eyes shine with unshed tears as he slowly nods. His hand immediately lands on his swollen stomach rubbing soothing circles.
"Would you like to rest and take a nap or see the progress of your baby?" I question trying to lighten the mood.
"C-can I shower and change first?"
I nod smiling sadly, "of course we'll meet in the new lab."
Both agree and disappear in the hallway.
Adam's P.O.V.
I follow Chase to our old bedroom. Chase flops down on the bed breathing loudly contently.
"Are you okay?" I ask.
"Tired and my back hurts," he whines.
I smile knowingly and sit behind him. I take off his shirt and start kneading the tense muscles of his lower back. He groans relaxing under my touch.
"Thanks," he mumbles eyes closed.
"Welcome," I reply.
After I finish he heads for the bathroom to shower. In thirty minutes he's ready and we both head to the new lab. Chase sits on the crisp white bed his feet dangling down. Mr. D walks in shortly after looking rather excited. I can't help but feel just as excited too.
Chase lays down and Mr. D starts with the usual procedure from before. He finally starts the ultra sound machine and places that gooey goop on Chase's abdomen. He hisses at the cold feeling and the room is filled with fleeting sounds of our baby's heartbeat.
"Wow," Chase breathes.
"Have you felt the baby move?" Mr. D asks.
"Yes Adam can feel too," he smiles.
I grab hold of his hand.
"Well everything seems fine...your baby is completely healthy and growing according to plan," Mr. D informs.
After reviewing Chase's diet and making sure he starts his prenatal vitamins we were finally done.
"Any questions?" He asks.
"How...how am I...supposed to you know...give birth...I don't exactly have...the equipment," Chase blushes.
"Oh...oh...umm... ok this is complicated," Mr. D begins.
"Aren't you supposed to be a scientist?" I ask.
Mr. D rolls his eyes.
"I'm assuming Adam here told you of your internal reproductive system and how there is an actual birth canal right?"
Chase nods but keeps his head down.
"Well it's attached to your rectum and as your pregnancy progresses your hips will adjust to carry the baby to full term also adjusting your pelvis as well," he explains.
"What? I got lost," I interrupt.
"I can give birth naturally," Chase summarizes.
Chase's P.O.V.
Tasha walks in the room and smiles as she spies us.
"Chase," she hugs me tightly.
"Adam!" She repeats.
We both greet her politely missing her as well.
"I heard what happened about...Marcus," she says regrettably.
"...can we please not?" I ask hurt.
"Of course," she says.
"Thank you," I whisper.
"Well it's dinner time! Chase are you hungry?" She asks.
"Starving...I haven't eaten since what happened," I answer.
"Ooh good then let's go eat," she grabs my hand and leads me upstairs where Leo and Bree wait.
"Chase! Adam!" Both exclaim.
We exchange hugs and greetings.
"Chase look at you," Bree coos at my stomach.
"Dude you look..." Leo trails off.
"Huge?" I supply.
"No no no I mean wow," he says quickly.
"Can I?" Bree asks hand hovering over my bump.
"Yeah," I blush.
She places a hand rubbing a random pattern. And she felt it...
"Omg! Wow that's crazy! Wow," she laughs.
"I wanna feel!" Leo shouts hand raised.
"After we eat, poor baby hasn't eaten yet," Tasha intervenes.
I smile gratefully at her because I'm really starving.
As we sit down Tasha brings in the plates of food for us. When we start to eat I can't help the soft content moan that escapes.
"Good?" She beams.
"Delicious," I nod.
"Great...umm I have to go somewhere," Adam says.
"Where?" I ask placing my fork down.
"Don't worry," he smiles.
He gets up and before leaving gives me a quick kiss on the lips.
"Dudes I'm eating here," Leo jokes.
Surprisingly enough Mr. Davenport doesn't say anything just smiles.
"So what have we missed?" I ask when Adam's gone.
"Get this, principal Perry wanted to resign from her post this week," Bree begins.
"She did? That's great!" I exclaim.
"Wanna know who was her replacement?" Leo asks disturbed.
"Who?" I wonder curiously.
"Trent," he sighs.
I feel something coil in my gut. Definitely something called fear.
"Chase are you okay? You look pale," Mr. Davenport says alert.
"F-fine," I stammer my hand rubbing soothingly on my stomach.
"Come on," he says holding out a hand.
I nod taking it gratefully. He holds me steady my center of balance being thrown off by the baby.
"Where are we going?" I question.
"Here," he opens the door to a room right next to Adam's and mine.
"Tasha and I are on the other part of the mansion now and since you sleep down here we agreed that this should be the nursery," he explains.
"T-thank you," I sniffle.
"Chase?"
"Thank you Mr. Davenport!" I hug him tight.
"Chase," he sighs hugging back.
"Thank you for everything," I whisper.
"I missed you guys," he admits.
"We missed you too," I reply.
"Go on to bed you must be exhausted and don't be afraid you're safe," he promises.
I nod smiling. He leaves and I go over to the bed. I lay down kicking off my shoes in the process. I grab the teddy bear and hold it close.
"We're back home," I mutter into the plush.
The baby gives a strong kick and I can't help but smile.
"We're safe," I whisper softly.
I hear a knock on the window. Reluctantly and with difficulty I go check it out.
"Mr. Davenport?" I ask surprised.
"Is it true...he's alive?" He asks.
I shake my head, "he's gone...far away from your grasp...you were years late."
"He's...gone? Dead?"
"Yes..." I turn to close the window.
"Chase wait!" He calls.
"Don't make me sound the alarm," I threaten.
"...congratulations," he sighs and disappears between the shadows.
"Evil Davenport?" Adam asks.
I turn around to find him standing guard.
"Yeah," I sigh.
"I got you desert," he says changing the topic.
I smile widely, "really? What?"
"Pickles with strawberry marmalade, peanut butter, whip cream and chocolate syrup. They ran out of orange," he lists.
I reach for the plate he's holding. I grab a pickle covered in my toppings and munch on it my eyes closing in delight.
"Thanks, we love you," I grin pleased.
"If I can see you this happy I don't mind," he shrugs.
"This is so good," I continue eating.
He chuckles and lays down on the bed. I go sit next to him with the plate in my hands.
"Happy?" He asks.
"Very," I nod enthusiastically.
"I'm glad," he says.
"Thank you Adam," I wipe my eyes fast from sudden tears.
He sits up and pulls me in for a hug.
"So many things could've gone wrong," he mumbles.
"I know," I nod sniffing again.
"Let it out. You're not alone," he soothes.
"I'm still scared...of everything...everyone...the things that happened before I even knew I was pregnant could've ended this before we even started," I sob.
"I know and now that we're half through this you're in danger..but I promise I'll protect you...I do," he continues.
I press myself to him as much as I can.
"We got you little baby," he whispers leaning in for a kiss.
"Adam," I warn embarrassed.
"I don't care," he says.
He kisses me and really doesn't care.
"Sweet with a hint of sour and the rest my Chase," he tastes.
I laugh at his description.
"Definitely missed this," I smile.
"What?"
"This...you," I motion.
"You always had me," he points out.
"No, I mean...you're not stressed out from work, you're happy," I explain.
"Promise you won't go back to Tech Town," he whispers.
I pull back instantly.
"Why not?"
"Because we're not disowned and we're certainly not running away anymore there's no need-"
"I want to provide for our baby," I complain.
"I can still work at the cafe, remember my first job before all this, I make more than enough to provide for both of you," he notes.
"But-"
"You're pregnant Chase please," he pleads.
"Only if you continue going to school," I retort.
"You'll be home schooled right?"
I sigh, "yes."
"Fine," he promises.
I hug him again and kiss him.
"Love you," I say innocently.
"Uhuh love you too," he laughs.
