ENTRY 10
CAMP SECRETS

I met him when I was twelve years old at the summer camp my father sent me to. All the other girls in my cabin were obsessed with our councilor Curtis but I had it bad for the guy with the goofy hair. I saw him the first day of camp, where a woman who I assumed was his mother was trying to tame the wayward locks. He smiled at her and pulled her hand away as the locks sprang back into their previous position. From that moment on I would watch him from behind my book as he participated in the various activities that the camp offered.

I remember how his hair shined in the afternoon sun, and he would crack the slightest of smile when anyone would compliment him. He didn't say much, always just seeming to enjoy the company of his friends, but one look from him and I was hooked.

One night our two cabins were chosen to have a movie night in the rec hall and as I sat at the back of the room, reading rather than watching the movie, my mystery man sat down next me.

"This movie is pretty boring, isn't it?" He whispered in my ear, startling me and sending my book flying.

"Yeah…" I blushed as I picked up my book.

"I'm Edward."

"Bella."

"I've seen you around, and you always seem to be reading that same book. Not much for camp activities, are you?" He laughed.

"I like to swim but aside from that I'm not coordinated enough for camp. This place was my dad idea."

"I hear you. I didn't want to go to camp either but I'm starting to think it's not so bad now." He winked and my heart soared.

We ended up talking for the rest of the movie, sharing about our families (me an only child, him a younger sister and an older brother), our interests (me reading and swimming, him baseball) and everything in between.

We hung out the last few weeks before camp ended during our down time and agreed to keep in touch afterwards.

Our second year of camp we agreed to meet behind the rec hall on the first day. We had been writing each other throughout the year and even admitted to 'really liking' each other, the way young teenagers did.

I hid everything from my parents so I wouldn't be forced to experience another 'talk' my father. I didn't need him knowing I had a boyfriend who would be at the same summer camp as me.

"Hey stranger." I heard a voice call from behind me.

"Edward!" I smiled, hugging him.

"I have something for you. Call it an early birthday present." He said holding up a pre-paid cellphone. "This way we can text each other when camp is over. I've been saving up my allowance to pay for them, and I'll put minutes on yours each month."

"I love it!"

"It will be our secret."
