Chapter Forty-Four: Surprise After Surprise
Chase's P.O.V.
"Adam no I don't want to go," I argue for the tenth time.
"Why not? It's nice out," Adam says stubbornly.
"I'm pregnant," I glare.
The baby decides to be known and starts doing somersaults in me. I wince and place my hand where it kicked. He comes closer and cups my face in his soft hands. He kisses me sweetly.
"We already discussed that you're pregnant and you're eight months pregnant...soon you won't be able to go out," he reasons.
"But I'm a pregnant guy...and there's people and I'm a freak and I'm...I'm..." I sniffle.
He hugs me tightly and kisses my tears away.
"Mr. D is letting us borrow the car," he smiles.
"But-"
"We can go to a quiet nice place where there is no people," he attempts.
"Promise?" I ask.
He nods.
"Okay," I concede.
He helps me up and starts stripping my clothes off. I turn away from him as he grabs clothes for our outing.
"Why are you hiding?" He asks curiously.
"'mfatanduglyandhowcanyoulookatme?" I mumble.
"What?" He chuckles.
He turns me around so we're face to face.
"Now can you repeat that again?"
"I'm...fat and ugly...how can you look at me?" I repeat.
"You are not fat. You are pregnant with our baby. You are not ugly. You are gorgeous and absolutely amazing. I can look at you because I love you," he says.
"Really?" I wonder hopefully.
"Of course," he smiles.
He helps me dress and in moments we're out the door. I wait for Adam in the car rubbing my baby bump.
"Daddy's almost here," I smile.
Adam's P.O.V.
Before going out I make a quick call.
"We're out the house. Work your magic," I say.
The other person answers and I hang up. I make my way to the driver side and start the car.
"Ready baby?" I ask.
"Yeah...I'm scared though," he answers honestly.
"I'm by your side. Always," I smile.
We're on our way to a nearby park that would be empty considering its secluded and not many people go there. In twenty minutes we arrive and I park the car. I get out and go to Chase's side.
"Thanks," he blushes.
"Welcome," I smile taking his hand in mine.
We start to take a stroll around the park.
"Soon we'll have someone to bring here...to have the life we never had," Chase comments.
"Only four weeks left," I whisper.
"I'm nervous...and scared," he admits.
"I can't imagine how you feel...I mean I won't go through birth or anything but I'm terrified," I confide.
"What if we screw up?" He worries.
"We'll screw up no matter what...maybe we'll be late to school knowing you're it's other dad or maybe we'll miss the game," I smirk.
He hums in agreement as we sit down in a bench. He places his head on my shoulder and closes his eyes.
"Tired?"
"Uhuh," he nods.
"You've been awfully tired lately," I note.
"The baby takes a lot of my energy...Mr. Davenport also mentioned that our baby will be bionic...naturally so no technological chip or anything," he sighs.
"Can't wait," I say sarcastically.
"It'll be difficult with a bionic baby," he says.
Just then a little girl comes out of nowhere. Chase tenses up not being comfortable around people, especially strangers. She places her hand on his ever growing stomach with glistening eyes.
"She can't wait to meet you," the little girl beams.
"What?" We both ask dumbfounded.
"Ashley?" A blonde young woman calls.
"Gotta go. Bye baby," she smiles.
She, Ashley, waves at us as she runs to the woman.
"Let's go," I say.
He nods taking my hand.
"That was weird."
"Very, at least she didn't freak out seeing a pregnant guy," he whispers.
"She looked like she was four though...Let's go eat something. Are you hungry?" I ask changing the topic.
"I'm craving ice cream with cheese and ranch dressing," he lists.
Ew fuck, I curse in my head but I don't say it. I still want to live.
We arrive at the ice cream shop we went to months ago before knowing Chase was pregnant.
"I know it's gross...you don't have to bring me anything," he says sadly.
I get out the car without a word and enter the small shop.
"Hi Adam, I haven't seen you in months," the cashier smiles.
"Hey, I've been busy," I shrug.
"Well what can I get?" She asks.
I give her my order and she looks at me like I have three heads.
"It's complicated," I explain paying for my order.
I return to find Chase sitting in the car eyes closed. His hand is unconsciously stroking his swollen belly.
"Hey," I open the door.
"Hi," he says but doesn't make a move.
"Here," I hand him the cup.
He looks at it suspiciously before realizing what it was.
"Thank you Adam!" He beams hugging me closer. Or as close as can be.
"You'd be surprised what weird concoctions they have," I scrunch up my nose.
He laughs lightheartedly. He digs in to his treat eagerly.
"Have you thought of any names?" I ask after a while.
"Not really.." He answers.
"Well what about Marcus for a boy? After his uncle," I question.
"No...I couldn't...it's difficult," he sighs.
"I understand," I reply, "Dante? Erik? Fred?"
"Are we continuing the alphabet name thing?" He asks.
I simply shrug while eating a spoonful of my chocolate ice cream.
"No," he repeats.
"Why?" I pout.
"What will happen if we get to z?"
My eyes widen, "you want that many kids?"
"Oh god no!" He freaks realizing what he said.
I look at him questioningly.
"I mean what if Bree decides to name her kids the same way as we were, consecutively? I just...no," he tries to explain.
"I get it but to answer your question, there's also Zane or maybe Zack," I laugh.
"No thanks and what if it's a girl?"
"Desiree, Danielle, or Destiny," I smirk.
"We are not naming her after your ex-crush," he glares.
"I didn't-"
"Can we go home?" He interrupts.
I check the time and notice I have a text. I read it quickly and smile.
"Sure."
Chase's P.O.V.
"Desiree, Danielle, or Destiny," Adam smirks listing off names.
"We are not naming her after your ex-crush," I glare feeling jealous.
"I didn't-"
"Can we go home?" I interrupt hurt.
He looks at the time and notices something smiling like a loon.
"Sure." He says
I hadn't realized it was so late until I checked the time. Already six-thirty p.m. We arrive home and it's quiet and dark. Adam opens the door and...
"Surprise!"
I jump back startled and look around. There are blue, pink, and purple balloons. Different colors of streamers and gifts in the corner. Tasha comes forward and engulfs me in her arms.
"It's okay," she coos.
I don't know what she's talking about until I feel the tears.
"Thank you," I cry.
"Aww Chase," Janelle smiles.
I hug everyone and greet them.
"Wow," I say amazed.
"Still mad?" Adam asks timidly.
"Thanks Adam," I hug him.
"Wait a minute, we put this together," Bree objects.
"Actually she did all the work," Leo adds.
"It was my idea though," Owen interjects.
They start bickering with each other until Owen stops and turns to me.
"Presents," he says.
I grin and nod. Owen brings out a big canvas.
"Valentine's day didn't go well and that painting was ruined. So I made this though it took a while because someone forgot to give me something," He says.
The drape on the canvas was taken off and what I saw brought more tears to my eyes. It was a picture of one of my sonograms. Our baby. Sucking its thumb and making little bubbles in my womb. It's still weird when I think about it.
"Thanks Owen!" I hug him tight crying on his shoulder.
"Congrats," he hugs me back.
Later after cake and everyone left Adam and I go to the nursery. When I enter I don't expect to see what I do. When Mr. Davenport showed it to me it was empty and plain but now the walls are a pastel yellow. There's a rocking chair by the window with wings engraved on it. There's a mahogany crib next to similar changing table and dresser. There's a creamy teddy bear for the baby in the crib with a baby yellow blanket. It has baby duckies printed on it.
"All we need is the baby," Adam whispers embracing me from behind.
"This is...wow...amazing..stupendous...wonderful..." I respond.
"I was worried you wouldn't like it," he says honestly.
"I love it," I contradict.
"I'm glad."
My throat constricts as Adam hands me bags of baby clothes. All the gifts from the baby shower. There's white onesies and soft knitted boots and baby black converses. There are bibs and mittens and different animal caps from bear to penguin to ducks. I open the rest and start putting them away in the once empty drawers as Adam hangs up the sonogram painting on the wall.
"I was worried we wouldn't have anything for him or her," I smile pleased.
"Actually I have one more present," Adam smiles nonchalantly.
"What is it?" I ask curiously.
"Close your eyes," he orders.
I do as told. Adam grabs my hands and gives me something soft, a cool material.
"Open them," he whispers in my ear.
I open them again and stare down in my hands. Adam smiles and takes the newborn clothing placing it over my baby bump. It's a baby version of our mission suits.
"Mr. Davenport helped...a lot but it was my idea," he says sheepishly.
"It's...adorable," I reply.
"Yeah," he scratches the back of his neck nervously.
I lean in and give him a kiss. His hand is still holding the mini mission suit on my stomach and we both feel our baby kick.
