Alice carried on down the path, with the old hat still on her head. It was comfortable, but it smelt burnt, and parts of it were black and tattered, like it had been thrown into a raging fire and spat out again. McTwisp hurried alongside Alice, trying to keep up with her, but he was weak, and this made him slow after a while.
'Keep up' Alice said sternly.
McTwisp sped up again to catch up with her, but it was too much for him. After a few more paces, he gave up and stumbled to the floor. Alice stopped and turned. This wasn't right. The poor rabbit used to be full of energy, always bouncing between trees and al through Underland. She looked at him for a minute as he lay on the ground, his breathing limp and slow. She walked over and crouched next to him, placing one hand on his shoulder and running it down his back, stroking him as he tried to regain energy. He lay still, resting before continuing the journey ahead.
'Underland is falling apart and I have to fix this.' Alice whispered tenderly into McTwisp's ear. He flinched slightly as she spoke. Alice wanted to get to Hatter as soon as she could, so she gently moved her hand underneath the thin rabbit and lifted him up, into her arms.
'Tell me the way. Where are they?' She asked, worried. He simply breathed 'Castleā¦' and Alice knew they were being held at the White Queen's place. She held McTwisp close to her chest as she carried on walking through the piles of rubble and decaying plants. She stepped all over the broken path, tripping at times as she quickened her pace to get to the castle sooner. It was a long journey ahead, and Alice knew she probably wouldn't last the whole journey without eating or drinking something, even though McTwisp was as light as a sheet of paper, and his skin was just as pale underneath his thinning fur and his torn jacket. Alice kept going, trying to see if she could find food on the way.
Tears filled Alice's eyes and one started trickling down her face. She was a strong young lady, but to see Underland in this state, and knowing her friends may be in trouble, she just couldn't help the tears that dripped off her chin and onto the ball of bones and fluff in her arms.
