By the end of the day, I was utterly exhausted. My body hadn't felt so tired since I had started cross country in junior high. Letting Felix know I would catch up with him, I watched him stroll out of the field leaving me alone. He could be knocked down a peg or two as well, I thought to myself. I started going through stretches in hopes that I wouldn't feel so terrible in the morning. Soon after, I got a chill feeling that someone was watching me. Don't panic. You're just making it up, I repeated internally.
My eyes swept through the branches and bushes as I slowly turned in a circle while stretching my arms. "You're being paranoid and crazy," I muttered as I let out a breath.
"I certainly won't disagree," said Peter.
And he appears. "Word is you're upset with me," I said while sitting down to continue stretching. Sparing a glance in his direction told me confirmed that.
"Is that so? What is 'the word'?" he asked with a tilt of his head. This is how it's going to go then? He just looked on in amusement, so I was left to think he was looking for me to admit I was sorry for whatever happened last night when I still didn't even know what made him mad in the first place.
"You know what I'm talking about," I said with a roll of my eyes.
"Do I?" Pan questioned as he started walking in a slow circle keeping his eyes off me.
"Yes you do, now cut the charade. I still don't understand how our conversation last night ended in you being so angry."
"Who said I was angry?" Pan swiftly stopped his movement to glare at me.
"Jack and Felix implied it. And you know, we'd probably have fewer problems if you didn't invade my personal space all the time," I informed him while shoving myself off the ground. Stalking over to him, I continued, "We haven't reached that level in our relationship yet where you just get to do that and I don't react badly."
"You don't seem to have that issue with Jack and you've known both of us for the same amount of time," Peter acknowledged, arms crossed. Was that jealousy in his voice?
The tone in my voice raised on its own accord. "Jack has a few advantages because he didn't hold a knife to my throat or have a cocky attitude and act like I should be fawning over him because he's pretty. Besides, I don't know if you noticed past your sulking, but he doesn't invade my personal space either. Plus," I added, "he didn't kidnap me."
"Are you still upset about that?" he asked, anger flaring. "When are you going to understand, Kim? You are a Lost Girl. You belong here in Neverland. And here, I'm the leader," Pan sneered.
"And is that what you're so mad about? The fact that you're the leader and I don't fall at your feet? Newsflash, Pan: My respect is earned. You've mostly played games with me, manipulated me, stolen my things, and forced your demands on me. Jack, for the most part, has treated me with respect and offered me help when he can, so I return the gesture. Also to clear up your earlier implication, I don't have feelings for him beyond friendship." My breathing was heavy by the time I finished my rant. Rethinking my last comment, I wondered why it even mattered that I added it in. Pan looked on at me, but it didn't seem as though he would speak. Extending an olive branch is trying to get along with someone, right? Decision made, I took a deep breath before speaking. "Look, we've managed occasionally to act like normal people around each other and fighting constantly is tiring. If you stop expecting me to follow commands for 'Because I say so' reasons, I will think about following them."
Throughout my speech I could practically see the wheels spinning in his mind attempting to find a way to get the most out of our agreement. I suppose it's too much to ask for the manipulation to change. "No promises, Kim?" he asked with a smirk. "That hardly seems fair."
"Things are hardly fair," I said with a smirk of my own.
Pan started walking toward the forest after a minute and called back, "Come on, Princess. Let's find out what we're having for dinner." This time I followed after him and was glad that he didn't turn back to look at me because there was a smile on my face. I'd rather die than let him know I smiled at that damn name. Despite there being no formal apologies given, the tension between us seemed to have dispersed and things were back to normal. Well, as normal as Neverland allows.
The evening went a lot better than the previous one. Pan and I didn't talk after our impromptu chat in the field, but he wasn't glaring at me anymore when I caught his eye occasionally, so I counted it as a victory. After I ate, I sat around for a while answering Alex and Colin's various questions about stories they had heard so far asking things like "What's a car?", "What's a wand?", or "Why are the only pets they're allowed to have owls, cats, frogs, or rats?"
Ever since coming back to camp I had been exhausted. Assuming it was from the long training session with Felix all day, I ignored my body calling for sleep until I couldn't keep my eyes open any longer. I told Alex and Colin I would continue my stories the next day and headed off to the tree which led to the secret bed tunnel. I passed Heath, a boy around 15 with bright hazel eyes and curly, golden hair, who asked if I was okay. Telling him I was tired, I headed off into the trees.
