Incredibly enough I am going back to this story after a two year hiatus. Wow, maybe I should apply for a job as a writer to Sherlock. Jsut kidding. I hated the last chapter I had written so much that I saw no way to continue the story. So I rewrote the whole chapter and made it completely different. But at least now I a have an outline for the rest of the story and I will finish it until mid April. Because that is when my classes start again and I'll once again have no time to write. ;-) So I hope some people might still enjoy this story.
Growing up living in New York someday had always been on Caroline's priority list. She had imagined the city to be glamorous and every citizen to be smarter than the average person. Her first visit to New York when she was 16 had therefore been a shocking experience. The people that were supposed to be artists, actors or at least really rich were nowhere to be seen. Instead she was confronted with normal people, poor people, everyday people and a terrifying lot of crazy people. New York seemed to attract them in the same way the city had attracted Caroline in the first place but they scared her just a tiny bit.
The next time she came to New York was after she had left Mystic Falls to see the world. She was not scared anymore of the crazy one or the thugs. She knew that they were a lot less powerful than her. She seemed to send off that message quite well since nobody bothered her during her stay but she got quickly bored of the city where she didn't know anybody.
Coming to New York with Klaus was a completely different experience. For once she didn't stay in a small hotel on the outskirts of Brooklyn but right in the heart of the big apple in Manhattan. They had booked a room in a fancy Hotel; apparently Klaus did not have an apartment in New York, from whose balcony she could see right into the central park.
The Hotel room was more of an apartment just like the one in Rome. They had arrived in the city and Klaus had made a few phone calls. Most of them had not been in English. Therefore she was not entirely sure where they were going. Currently Klaus was taking a shower. She could hear the water running down the drain. She didn't know what to expect from the next few hours and days and tried to brace herself for the worst. But she could not think of Bonnie as someone bad. Sure she had her moments and the first few months of Caroline being turned had put a strain on their friendship. But Caroline was confident that they had overcome the initial struggle. She could not imagine Bonnie with a dark soul. The witch had always been so deeply positive. Even when Caroline had mocked her belief in magic Bonnie had stayed calm and carried on with her own life.
Klaus hand touched her shoulder. "We will be leaving early tomorrow morning. We should get some sleep." She looked at him. His face showed unusual signs of worry. "What will happen tomorrow if we find her?" She asked. He looked into her eyes. "I don't know. This is the first time in a very long time that I have no idea what we will find and how we will proceed. For once in my life people are not fighting my plans but I am fighting theirs." He snorted drily. "This is a whole new world for me."
She smiled. "Welcome to the light side. Unfortunately we don't have cookies."
"Very funny."
"Don't worry. Being good is not as difficult as you might think it is."
"Well, then I am glad that you are my guide." His lips touched hers lightly. "We should go rest. There are two rooms take whichever you like."
Caroline grinned. "Just because you have chosen the good side of life doesn't mean that we have to be completely good." She grabbed his hand and pulled him behind her into one of the rooms.
Caroline woke up in the morning feeling surprisingly relaxed. She had slept very well with Klaus by her side. Despite his earlier portrayal he seemed to need more than just a couple hours of sleep every few days. He had fallen asleep even before her clutching her tightly to his chest. She listened to his heartbeat for a while as always astounded that they even had a heart that could beat. Waking up she noticed that he still had his eyes closed. She used to be a rather restless sleeper and had definitely moved at least her legs that were now entwined with his. Klaus on the other hand seemed to be a calm sleeper. His right arm was still lying right next to his body in the same position as before while his left had only moved slightly lower on her back. Suddenly she noticed that his eyes were open. She shrieked a tiny bit. "Oh my god. That scared me surprisingly much." He laughed and leaned down to kiss her hair. "You seemed to be very absorbed in your observations."
She shrugged. "I don't really get much time to just watch you being still. You always seem to move." "Well," he answered "When this is all over I promise to sit still for as long as you want me to." She smirked "Challenge accepted."
They got out of bed and quickly worked through their morning routine. After having been exhausted the night before and going to bed rather early they left the hotel earlier than Caroline would have expected. Klaus headed straight to the Central Park. Caroline followed quickly behind. "Where exactly are we going?"
"Well, despite the fact that most witche can just glamour themselves the way they want to appear the witches of New York have a different approach to beauty. So we are going to take a look at the morning yoga classes in the central park."
"Yoga? You've got to be kidding me. Who in their right mind practices yoga? That is like the most boring sport ever. If you can call that a sport at all." Caroline mocked.
Klaus shook his head. "Do not underestimate resting in yourself. Of course Yoga does not give you the workout Cheerleading might give you" he winked at her "but it gives you a good understanding of your body and it makes you very flexible."
"Well" Caroline said, "I am flexible enough, thank you very much."
"Oh yes, I remember." Klaus laughed. She hit him lightly on the arm but had to smile as well.
They did not have to walk in the park for long to find the first yoga practioners. Klaus stopped, took a closer look at them and then shook his head. They kept going but he did not seem to find whatever he was looking for. Caroline started to be impatient. "What exactly are we looking for? Maybe I can help."
Klaus shrugged. "You can just feel the magic oozing from them. Witches in New York tend not to hide their affiliations since there are so many strange people in this city anyway."
He spotted the next group of people doing yoga. He stepped closer and squirted his eyes. "Can you feel it now?" Caroline tried. And there it was. A sizzling in the air that simply felt like magic. She could not describe the feeling nor tell whether it was good or bad. It just was. Klaus got even closer to the witches and Caroline followed him. The sizzling intensified. "Which one is it?" Caroline whispered. She wasn't sure why she was whispering it just seemed appropriate. "I am not sure. I think we need to be closer to really tell. Or maybe we can tell better when they leave."
Klaus creeped closer and was now starring intensely at the group. One of the group which consisted mostly of women noticed him and Caroline felt like growling at her when she clearly pushed her very well formed ass more into his direction. Klaus though did not seem to notice. He was still starring at the whole group trying to figure out which one was the witch. Caroline looked around and noticed something right behind them. She took a few steps to her right and had to stop herself from giggling. Klaus appeared right next to her his eyes still focused on the group in front of them. "We definitely have to wait for them to spread to find the witch."
"Or" Caroline said" we could just ask that one. She pointed in the opposite direction. Klaus turned around. On the other side of them there was a young woman partially hidden behind a big bush. Her flaming red hair seemed to have a life of its own while she was doing an upright yoga pose. But most obvious were the tiny red sparks flying from her hair that puffed away after a few seconds.
Klaus was about to start running towards her when Caroline stopped him with her hand on his arm. "Let me handle the introduction." Klaus did not seem to be amused but he let her go on.
Caroline slowly approached the young witch. "Hi! Sorry for interrupting your work-out, my name is Caroline and I could really use your help." The young woman opened her eyes. They were electric blue. "Hi Caroline." She greeted her with a surprisingly husky voice. "How can I help you?" She looked directly in Caroline's eyes without flinching for a second. Caroline met her eyes without hesitation even though she felt a little bit uncomfortable about it.
"Well" Caroline said, suddenly not sure what she actually wanted to ask. "I am looking for my friend and I hoped you could help me with that."
The girl frowned. "Not that I don't want to. But I don't know you and I probably also don't know your friend. So I am not sure what I could contribute to your search."
"Well my friend is a lot like you in many ways." Carolina stuttered.
"Vegan with frisky hair?" Caroline could hear Klaus sigh behind her. "Well, no. I mean, maybe she is vegan now, I don't actually know that. But I don't actually think that matters right now. No, what I mean is that she is a witch just like you."
Whatever reaction Caroline had expected it was not this. The girl smiled and said. "Oh, okay. Well, then I might be able to help you find her."
Caroline was confused. "You are not even going to ask me how I know you are a witch?"
"The same way I am not going to ask you, how you are a vampire, just like your buddy over there" again Klaus sighed "and how you can walk in the sun."
Caroline nodded. She should have known that the witch could immediately tell what they were but her lack of excitement about the fact perplexed her. "Do you mind if I call my friend as well?" She asked pointing to Klaus who waved to them with a slightly creepy grin on his face. "Sure you can call your friend over here as well." The witch emphasized on the friend and smirked. Caroline frowned "We are just friends." "Sure" the girl said without sounding or looking convinced for a second. Caroline looked over to Klaus who had a big grin plastered on his face. She rolled her eyes and waved him over to where they were standing.
"This is Klaus. My friend" she looked pointedly at him and saw that he was still smiling. Bastard. "and this is…" she stopped noticing that she had never asked the young witch for her name. "Brünhild. But you can call me B." Caroline said: "I am Caroline. That is a very unique name. Does it have a special meaning?" The girl snorted. "Yeah, my parents hated me? No, actually my dad is German and grew up in a rather, ahm, unique environment and just had to give me a name from the German Nibelungen. He did not exactly appreciate me being a witch. But that is another story for another day." Caroline could hear Klaus mouth "Thank god." Behind her back and she decided to give him a lecture about that later. They needed the witch.
"So do you have something that belonged to your friend? I can only locate her using a personal item." B asked Caroline. "Yes," Caroline nodded. "I know. I brought one of her necklaces. She hasn't worn it in a while but when we were teenagers she wore it all the time. It was a gift from me and another friend of ours." She opened her bag and took out the necklace. B extended her hand and Caroline let it fall into the open palm. The witch closed her eyes. The muscles in her face clenched as she focused on the task at hand of finding Bonny.
"Yes, this works nicely." She said, pressing out the words.
"But, don't you need a map or something?" Caroline asked curiously. "
"No," said B and opened one of her eyes. "Just silence." She closed the eye again. Caroline was slightly embarrassed. She and Klaus stared at the necklace, waiting for something to happen to it. But nothing happened. There was no glow or sparks flying form the necklace or B's hair for that matter. So they kept waiting for a couple of minutes. After what felt like an eternity to Caroline B finally opened her eyes and starred at them wide eyed.
"What?" Caroline demanded to know.
"Do you know what your friend has gotten involved with? This is some deep shit. I mean I am all pro experimentalism in magic but this is taking it really too far." She shuddered visibly.
"What are you talking about?" Caroline insisted.
"Look, I'll tell you what I saw and where I am pretty sure the girl is but you have to promise to leave me alone afterwards. I might appreciate a certain amount of trouble but definitely not this much trouble."
"Alright, alright. We got it," interrupted Klaus. "Just tell us where we can find the witch."
"She was walking along a river with a dark haired man. They were talking shit about offerings and rituals. They are looking for a witch coven big enough to sacrifice all at once. All I could see was a big building in the background. Maybe it was a church but I didn't see a cross. It was white and had all these white little towers and red domes. It looked a bit like that big parliament building that I saw in London last year. But the signs were not written in English. Does that help you?"
Caroline took a deep breath. She had hoped that the witch could tell her exactly where Bonnie was. But apparently now they had to figure out what building next to a river looked like the British parliament. Brilliant" To her astonishment Klaus took out his phone and typed in something. Then he turned the phone towards B.
"Is this the building you saw?"
The witch took the phone out of his hands and took a closer look. "Yeah, that is it. How did you know?"
"I have been around for much longer than most people. There are very few places I have never been to."
"Alright" B said and rolled her eyes slightly. She turned around to her yoga mat and starting packing up her stuff. Then she said to them: "I am glad I could help you guys and if you ever need help with something less creepy I always willing to help. But please leave me out of this. I do not want to be sacrificed." Caroline nodded. "Understandable."
As soon as B had left Caroline turned to Klaus. "So, where are we going now?"
"We, my love," he said, "are going back to Europe." Wuhu, Caroline thought, another transatlantic flight. That was just asking for disaster.
Any guesses to where they are going? But they are definitely closing up to where Bonnie and Professor Shane are at the moment.
