A/N: I wrote a lot of this on the train which gained me a couple of strange looks from the women sitting next to me - but it is not my fault that she kept reading what I was writing ;-)
As soon as they arrived the receptionist came rushing towards them. "Is everything alright? May I assist you in any kind of way?" He asked considering Caroline's pale complexion with great concern.
"We are alright." Klaus snarled at him having no patience for human interaction. "My wife is just tired."
Caroline shook her head: "Not his wife." She just wanted to crawl out of her skin and into her bed.
The receptionist looked even more worried now. Klaus had enough of this. He glared at the receptionist: "You will forget what you just saw and from now on only address us when you have been asked." The receptionist's eyes got the same glass-eyed look compelled people always had. Then he turned around and walked back to the reception. His smile was still a little bit off but he would recover. Klaus wrinkled his nose annoyed by the intrusion in his private business.
Klaus and Caroline walked to the elevator and went up to their room. Only after they had entered their suite's living room did Klaus let Caroline's hand go. She did not move an inch staying where he had left her. "Caroline," Klaus said and lightly touch her face with his hand. Her body shook for a moment then she seemed to find back to the reality. Finally she looked him in the eyes. The expressions on her face changed from contempt to disgust to anger and back within seconds. Finally she started laughing as if she had lost her mind. Confusion settled on Klaus face. What was happening? He could understand anger or sadness but he had no idea what the maniacal laugh was supposed to mean.
Despite the fact that she did not need to breath she gasped for air. Finally she settled down again holding her sides gasping. "My wife?" She finally managed to push out between more giggles. Klaus frowned. "That is what you are laughing about? We are simply registered here as Mr. and Mrs. Mikaelson. It was just an instinct reaction to get rid of the man."
"It is just" she had finally stopped laughing and was now walking towards the couch in the living room. She let herself fall on it and sprawled her long limbs out over the side edges of the sofa. "After everything that happened in these last few weeks including me nearly draining a man today, I did not expect that to still shock me." She frowned for a second. "Actually that is raising bigger concerns in my head than the attack." She was silent for a moment lost in thought. "On our way back here realized that it didn't feel unknown at all. I was more shocked by the idea of what I have done tonight than the act itself." She was now talking more to herself than to him. He didn't want to interrupt her stream of thoughts. He silently walked over to the chair on her right and sat down, in a much more elegant pose than she, and let her figure it out. She turned her head towards him: "Why wasn't I estranged by the whole eating humans thing? I have only ever lived on blood bags or animal blood." He lifted his eyebrow and suddenly she remembered meeting him in São Paulo. He had alluded to their feeding together but she had refused to believe him. Admittedly she had refused to believe any point of his story at that time. The story had taken its toll and she didn't even have the time to take a breath and to think back to this first meeting. Thinking back it made so much more sense that she had drunken blood directly before. Everything the werewolves had said, the witch's accusations and her permanent stay with Klaus.
"Why didn't you tell me?" She asked him trying not to make her voice sound accusing but failing miserably. Klaus shrugged: "I didn't think you would accept it as a given fact. I assumed you would just get mad and accuse me of lying. I knew or at least hoped that you would figure it out on your own eventually. A body that has once drunken straight from the vein is rather reluctant to go back to blood bags or animal blood."
Caroline let her head fall against the couch. Her mind was spinning. She wanted to be mad at him. He had somehow gotten her to drink human blood straight from the source. But since she could not remember the circumstances that led to her change she felt wrong accusing him. Maybe she had wanted it. So far he had not pressured her into anything and except for Rome's catacombs he had given her no reason not to trust him and his love for her. She stopped short. This was the first time that she had consciously thought about him loving her. Obviously she had known somewhere in her mind that their relationship was not only from her side but so far she had never considered his point of view. She glanced at him again. His eyes were still locked on her waiting for her to freak out or say something. Only now did Caroline realize what a shock it must have been for him when she suddenly did not remember anything about their story. Considering his usually rather short temper he had taken their journey with a lot more patience than she would have expected.
Watching Caroline was always fascinating to Klaus. Some days he could tell immediately what was going on in her mind, other times, like today, it was impossible to know what she was thinking. He had to wait patiently for her to tell him what was on her mind. Contrary to popular belief he was a patient man. He had lived for over a thousand years what more could a few minutes change?
Caroline closed her eyes and collected her thoughts. Finally she nodded. "I am not happy about this not even in the slightest. But since I do not remember I am just going to take your word." Klaus was surprised. He had not expected her to get over it this quickly. After a few silent seconds she added: "Do you want to tell me how it happened?" He considered her request for a few moments. "I am not sure I should. Maybe we should just let your memories come back the natural way."
"But they aren't!" She lashed out at him stronger than she had intended. She sighed. "Look, I know you think that but I need to get some closure on tonight." She closed her eyes for a moment and took a deep breath. "It is so terribly confusing. I know that I should feel guilty about hurting the guy. But I also know that he was attacking us. We could have been anybody. He didn't know that we could fight him off with ease. He didn't seem to be a good guy. So my gut tells me it was okay to attack him. But my consciousness tells me at the same time that I didn't know his story. Maybe his mum is sick at home or his boss just fired him. How can I tell which one I can bite and which one I can't?"
"To be honest, I hardly ever consider that point. As long as you don't kill him, does it really matter?" Klaus admitted. She rocked her head from side to side. "But shouldn't it matter? Can't we just feed of the bad guys?" He smiled a tiny smile. "Love, the problem is, that deep inside of them even the best people have dark secrets and even the worst people have had good moments. How can you judge within a second? I consider myself to be strong and smart but not even I would dare to make that decision. You are still trying to access this with human measurements. But we are not humans."
Caroline's eyes clouded for a moment. "As much as I dislike admitting it I don't think you're wrong. Maybe I am still looking for human justification of my existence. Now will you tell me how I got to feed from humans?"
Klaus shrugged. "I am not entirely sure you will be terribly comfortable hearing this, love." She raised her eyebrow challengingly. "I am sure I can go through whatever gory story you are going to tell." He smirked. "The story is not exactly gory, my dear, but I still wouldn't file it under PG-13." She needed a moment to understand the innuendo. "Eww, Klaus! Really? Sex stories?" He started full on laughing. "You asked, love!" She rolled her eyes at him but motioned with her hand for him to continue.
"We had been in São Paulo for about two months. Despite your initial reluctance you had admitted that I was not Satan on earth and had begun to accept my courting." He began. She rolled her eyes. "Are you going to keep talking this pompous the whole time?" He gave her a short glance and a sign to be quiet. "I had waited for you to make the first move and after a few weeks I had you. We were having drinks in my apartment and out of nowhere you kissed me. We slept together the first time that night." He stopped speaking for a moment as if he was lost in memories. It was strange for Caroline to hear this story and watch his face reminiscing about their first time together. She had no recollection and yet she still believed him somehow. "Are you going to get to the point when the first blood drinking incident happened?" She interrupted his thoughts impatiently. "Well, I just wanted you to know that we had already had sex, a lot of sex if I may add, when the incident happened." He put an emphasis on incident slightly mocking her choice of words. "I had been in the US for a couple of days to check on the hybrid situation. I came back one day earlier since my business had not taken me as long as expected. We had decided to see each other the next day since you were traveling in the south. I was hungry from the flight so I compelled myself a young lady for room service. Had I known that you were already back in São Paulo I would have been more discreet. I am not sure how you knew that I was back but suddenly you were in my apartment staring at my meal. You jumped to the wrong conclusion and started shouting at me." Caroline grinned sheepishly. She did have a tendency to let her passion rule her actions. "I didn't know how to stop you other than kissing you. You were incredibly mad at me and kissed me back aggressively. I pulled you closer and without a moment of hesitation you started ripping of my clothes..." Caroline quickly interrupted him holding up her hands. "Alright, alright I get it. We had wild passionate sex. No need for further details. This is weird enough as it is. What happened next?" "Well, the girl was still standing there…" "Wait," Caroline interrupted again. "She watched us have sex? Eww!" He laughed. "You didn't really seem to care then, love." She shook her head. "Oh my god, I am already embarrassed thinking about it right now." Klaus smiled knowingly. "Well, if it sooths your mind, you were shocked afterwards as well. You look at her and asked me what the hell I had been thinking. I guess you had finally put two and two together and realized she was only a snack. It was a strange situation with both of us naked on the sofa you with a sheet and me without while the girl was staring at us not able to move." He stopped short again looking at Caroline to see how she was taking the information. She was still surprisingly calm. "So I asked you if you minded that I took her to the kitchen to still my hunger. You considered for a moment and surprised me telling me to just do it here. I have to admit I was not prepared for that. But I could see the curiosity in your eyes. So I went over to the girl and positioned her so I could look into your eyes while drinking." Caroline frowned. "Wait a minute were you still naked?" He nodded and she crinkled her nose. "You watched us intensely and then got up to come closer." He hesitated for a moment not sure how she was going to react to the continuation of the story. She raised her eyebrows expectantly. "I guess you were still a tiny bit jealous. Anyhow you watched us for a second and out of the sudden ripped away my mouth from her neck and kissed me. To be honest it was the sexiest thing I had ever experienced in my very long life. You kissed me hard and licked the blood from my lips. You let go and stared into my eyes. Without losing eye contact you ripped into the girl's neck. It was glorious!" He smiled and there was a certain amount of pride in his voice. "We shared her, I healed her and she left never to be seen again."
Caroline had listened to the last part of the story with shock. She knew she had a tendency to be jealous but this much? She knew she was attracted to Klaus and to a certain extent, she could admit that at least to herself, she might be in love with him. But to act so much out of her comfort zone? It seemed so surreal. Yet still she could see it in her mind as if she had been there. Which she technically had. God, why was this all so confusing?
"So, that was the story. You accepted that drinking blood was nothing inherently terrible. It took you a while to get off blood bags altogether. I did not push you but of course it was more convenient for me if we could just share a meal together without me having to hide who I am."
"It is just so strange that I can't remember any of this. It all makes sense when you say it. It feels like I have heard this before but I can't grasp it entirely." She let out an annoyed sigh. Suddenly Klaus was sitting next to her and took her hand in his. "That is a good sign, love." She let out a long breath. "It is just so frustrating!" She leaned her head against his shoulder. His lips touched her hair and she felt an overwhelming warmness towards him. It must be just as frustrating for him as it was for her. He had all these memories of them and suddenly he had to rebuild everything they had. Klaus had shown a surprising amount of support and patience with her. Otherwise she would have never trusted him this far.
"Let's go to bed." He whispered in her hair. "We need to be well rested tomorrow when encountering the coven." Over the excitement of the night she had nearly forgotten where they were going the next day. She nodded and he helped her up. For a moment he seemed to hesitate than he pulled her along with him to the room he claimed as his own. Without a pause she followed him.
Her pajamas were still in her room but Klaus bag was open on top of one of the chairs. She grabbed the first shirt she saw and changed. He was being a gentleman and turned around to change himself but she was sure he was still looking. For some reason she didn't care. It wasn't anything he had never seen before. Without stopping in the bathroom she climbed into the bed and crawled under the sheets. He followed her within seconds wearing a similar shirt and boxer shorts. They were not touching. She turned to her side noticing he had done the same. She gazed at his face. In the only sparely light bedroom it was easy to forget that he was over a thousand years old. He looked so young and in harmony with himself. She leaned closer and kissed him softly on the lips. Out of nowhere the tension became too much to bear. Her lips pressed tighter on his. His hands found its place on her hip and he pulled her closer. He rolled onto his back and took her with him. Her hands were planted right next to his head while he was holding her close to his body with his hands on her back. His fingers spread out and it felt as if he could reach everywhere and nowhere at the same time. Her left hand went into his hair and she buried her fingers in his locks. Caroline began to move slowly on top of him. He growled from deep within his chest. She could feel the vibrations going through her. Smiling into the kiss she entwined her legs with his.
Every move they made was slow and deliberate. They took their time slowly taking of each other's clothes. For Caroline it was the first time she was able to explore him in this much time. He had probably done it before but he still took his time while smiling every time he hit an especially sensitive point. They enjoyed the slow dance until they were both satisfied. She fell asleep in his arms while he was still stroking her back. She smiled in her sleep happy and save. He stayed awake for a couple minutes longer just to watch her sleep. He had not expected this especially not after Rome. But maybe, he thought smiling before falling asleep as well, the prospect of secret witch hide-outs had this effect on Caroline.
A/N: I solemnly swear that next chapter will advance the actual plot but they just kind of ran away with my plot to tell each other naughty stories... Love, Santvica
