Chapter 24

There was nothing left of the money, except for a few pennies scattered at the bottom of the box. His room looked like a tornado had gone through it, and he knew Dudley was the one to blame; his cousin had seen him with the pay from his last job, probably thought he could get some money from him and ended up lucking out, and finding Harry's hidden treasure.

Hermione's birthday was a few weeks away, and he hoped he would have the time and the money to buy her present beforehand and give it to her at Hogwarts. Harry had worked all summer long, mowing neighbours' yards, walking dogs and even cooking for an elderly couple, all so he could buy her the book he had been eyeing for weeks, an old copy of Wuthering Heights. But that had all but become impossible now.

Looking out his window, he sighed. If he couldn't give her a gift, maybe this year,he'd give her his heart.
