Chapter 13: Enter the temple.
Everything was black. Everything was muffled. There were a fair few people around walking this way and that, talking to each other. He could just about make out the sound of rushing water amongst the footsteps and chatter.
Suddenly light streamed in, blinding him. They were outside in an open clearing. As Kurtis's eyes adjusted to the new light, he saw crystal blue water surrounding the island he was on. The tall trees were gently swaying in the breeze as birds fluttered from one tree to another singing their various songs.
"Ooh sorry, is the light blinding you Kurtis?" Tollorov pulled up a chair and sat in front of Kurtis lighting a cigar. Apparently Tollorov and L'oscurità Del Destino were skilled with putting up camps fast. However compared to the previous camp there were less people to house.
Kurtis squinted as he attempted to look Tollorov in the eyes. "Why? Why go for the disc and not the Holy Grail?"
Tollorov lent closer to Kurtis, being inches from his face. There was something odd about him…something that Kurtis couldn't place and that unnerved him.
"Please hurry that ass up" he thought as Tollorov continued to stare at Kurtis.
Sully and Nate were helping the injured and the young into the main hall. Lara, however, was standing in the entrance staring out into the forest still clutching Kurtis's Chirugai eager to feel it twitch.
"We need to come up with a plan before we go charging in" Nate had appeared at her side. "As much as you would like to" he added with a smile.
Lara slowly turned to face Nate. Her eyes were filled with tears yet looked determined. One thing you never do is get in the way of Lara Croft when she is so determined.
She stormed into the main hall to make sure that everyone was safe. With her conscience settled some what, she ensured she had all the items she needed in her bag, grabbed Nate and left the monastery.
"Alright what's this magnificent plan of yours Drake." The sternness in her face told Nate just to get to the point. He nodded and continued to walk into the forest.
"Hey! What about me?!" They had forgotten Sully. He was stood at the entrance waving his arms to get their attention. Lara and Nate exchanged looks. Nate shouted back "Stay here and take care of everyone" As Nate was talking to Sully, Lara began to walk into the forest again giving Nate time to signal something to Sully.
Back at the campsite Kurtis had taken a beating. Blood was dripping from his eyebrow and his cheek. His lip was also throbbing. "That's probably going to swell" he thought getting steadily impatient "Just hurry up"
Tollorov was sat under a tree once again smoking another cigar. Every so often he'd check his watch, glancing over at Kurtis with a smug yet slightly off-putting look on his face which just unsettled Kurtis even more.
The rest of Tollorov's crew where having to find ways to entertain themselves. Some were playing cards in a tent, others resting but some, the more untrusting, were staying vigilant. But not vigilant enough.
"Hey git face!" Everyone stood, or in Kurtis's case, looked up.
"Do the monks now do sex changes Ms Croft?" Tollorov was now stood in the middle still with the smug look on his face, surrounded by his men, their guns pointed at the intruder.
"The boobs, they were weighing me down" Nate slowly walked towards the camp with his hands in the air and a huge grin on his face, holding something in one of his hands.
"With the world at stake Crofty doesn't want you to have this. Even if it means his life. I however would be willing to give you it, obviously for a price."
Tollorov studied Nate's face trying to decide whether to trust him or not. "Name it."
"Can we sit? I'm parched."
Tollorov pointed to the chair where was sitting and sat across from Nate. He gave Nate a bottle of beer from the cooler beside him.
"So what is it that you want Drake?"
Tollorov's eyes studied Nate's face looking for any kind of hint.
Lara was being as silent as she could be underwater. She swam through the natural tunnels until she quietly emerged from the water. She rose enough that she could look around.
Lara saw that she was precisely where she wanted to be, behind Kurtis. Her heart swelled seeing that Kurtis was in one piece.
She swam to the edge of the island and pulled herself out. Making sure no one was looking at her, Lara tip toed her way over to Kurtis gently putting her hand on his shoulder.
He jumped but quickly calmed down seeing Lara crouched beside him. His heart began to flutter, she didn't abandon him.
"Lara." he whispered.
She put her finger over her mouth as she took out Kurtis's Chirugai. She let go of it letting Kurtis take control and cut his bindings.
Lara led him to the water where she climbed out.
"I need your help getting into the temple."
His brows furrowed.
"I thought you knew how."
"I do," Lara was growing annoyed. She pulled him behind a very large rock, "I just need you to help me."
"What about all of the guards?"
"What is this twenty questions?!"
Kurtis smiled as he took pleasure in seeing her annoyed. She rolled her eyes before leading him into the water.
Kurtis swam behind Lara, managing to keep up with her, and occasionally stealing a glance at her behind. She led them to an air pocket.
The room they emerged in was a fairly large room that had a huge wooden wheel in the middle. There was a pool of water beneath it, reflecting the little light there was around the room.
Lara smiled proudly at Kurtis raising her eyebrows a little.
"Er, how did you know this was here?"
"The reflection in the water. Polo lightly drew the reflection of a wheel."
Kurtis walked to the edge of the of the pool of water. He looked around trying to find a lever of sorts. Not seeing anything he turned around to face Lara only to find her grinning.
He couldn't help but admire her more a moment. She was soaked, her clothes were sticking to her her accentuating her curvy figure.
Kurtis sighed, bowing his head.
"How?"
"Water. We need to get the water flowing."
She walked past him, her head held high, and dived into the water. A few strokes later she pulled out of the water at the other side. She pointed up signalling for Kurtis to climb.
Even though both Lara and Kurtis were beaten and bruised they climbed the crumbling walls with ease.
At opposite ends of the room were two old, thick chains on platforms. They picked up the heavy chains and looked at each other nodding from across the room. In unison they jumped of the high platform clutching on to the chains. A loud click echoed through the chamber as the ceiling above the wheel opened up. A hook appeared on the floor for the chains to be linked to to keep the ceiling open.
As the water flowed in Lara made her way back to Kurtis.
"That no doubt got Tollorov's attention.", Lara pulled out a walkie talkie from her pocket.
"Sully. It's opening. Reign fire."
The distorted yet cheerful voice of Sully chimed back.
"Right-i-o toots."
Lara slapped Kurtis on his arm and began to leave.
"What do you mean reign fire? Lara." he called jogging after her.
When they resurfaced it was anarchy. People where running this way and that. Sully and Nate were hidden behind an upturned table shooting at Tollorov's merc's. Bao-Zhi and a few of his brethren were also fighting. Tollorov was cowering behind several of his goons.
Lara and Kurtis made their way to Sully and Nate, moving from cover to cover as best they could.
"So, did you do it?" shouted Nate over the sound of explosions and gunfire.
Lara just raised her eyebrows and pointed over her shoulder. The huge waterfall that was there previously had now parted, becoming two waterfalls. At the base of the former waterfall was the entrance to a corridor.
With a huge grin on his face Nate sprinted for the entryway like a giddy child, followed by the other three.
As they entered Sully spun on his heal with a grenade launcher in hand. Just as he fired it they saw Tollorov furiously sprinting for the newly opened corridor.
Kurtis pushed Lara to the other end of the corridor as Nate grabbed Sully pulling them back away from the blast zone. The surrounding walls caved in blocking the entrance. Tollorov could be heard swearing profusely on the other side.
Getting up off of the floor Nate and Sully high fived before carefully walking further down the corridor. Kurtis and Lara stumbled to their feet, Lara a little winded, before their eyes met.
There he was safe and sound. There she was in one piece. Finally giving in to the emotions building within, Lara and Kurtis rushed each other, their lips locking in a passionate kiss.
"You know it's not over yet right. The hanky panky comes later." Nate reappeared with his hands in his pockets causing Lara and Kurtis to pull away.
With a nod of his head Nate walked back down the corridor. Lara and Kurtis shared a lingering look before following, Kurtis slapping Lara's backside as the did.
