She gave them an edited version on the story, she was Johanna's sister and a former ward on Judge Turpin and had convinced a stranger named Sweeney Todd to help her with her vendetta against him. She didn't tell Johanna that their father was alive, it didn't make a difference now. "So the Judge is dead?" Anthony asked in shock, "And you killed him?"
Ellie nodded, and looked out the window, "Johanna, have you kept up with your French?" The teen nodded, "Good, we'll spend the night in an inn tonight, and board a boat to France tomorrow morning."
"Are you alright?" Johanna asked, Ellie looked at her sincerely, her Dark brown eyes cloudy and deep with an undeterminable emotion. "Never better." They reached the beach and Ellie rushed to the pier, where she found Toby sitting on a log. "Did you get the tickets?" she asked. Toby handed her the five paper slips. Ellie felt her heart sink to the bottom of her stomach and her eyes moisten at the sight of the two extra tickets.
"Toby…" She began carefully, trying not to burst into tears, "we're going to take a little trip, okay?" she said. "But, my father and Mrs. Lovett. They won't be able to come. With us, so I am going to take care of you okay?"
Toby looked up at her strangely, "Why aren't they coming?" Ellie began to tear up, trying to find the words, "Because… Because they've gone to heaven." Her face grew damp with tears. Toby's face grew angry and sad at the same time, trying to understand the situation, "I am so sorry Toby, I really am." She reached up to touch him but he pulled away.
"It was Mr. Todd wasn't it." Toby said angrily, Ellie nodded sadly, "I'm afraid my father was not well Toby, but…" she paused, "But it doesn't matter now, you have to come with me, or the law will put you in a workhouse" Toby nodded. Ellie choked back a sob and embraced his thin body quickly, she felt her shoulder become wet with the boy's tears. "I am so sorry Toby," she whispered, "We have to go now."
She led him to the Carriage and they rode to a small Inn on the shore. Toby wept silently on Ellie's shoulder and she on his head. The two other passengers watched the two who showed surprising emotion for two supposed strangers. They reached the Inn, Toby and Anthony would share a room and Johanna and Ellie would share another. "I feel like we're children again" Johanna sat on the bed, "I missed you so much Ellie."
"I missed you to Jo." Ellie sat down on the bed beside her, she had mostly cried herself out and now forced herself to look on the Brightside "So, are you really going to marry Anthony?" she looked up at the blonde. "He loves me." Johanna smiled hopefully, but a knowing light shined in her blue eyes, eyes that had been bright but turned dull due to years of torment, "Do you love him?" Ellie asked seriously
The younger didn't answer, "Jo, you can't marry a man you just met." Ellie turned to her sister "But, how will I live? Marrying Anthony was my only plan of getting by."
Ellie sighed and Took Johanna in her arms, "You are sixteen, going on seventeen. Waiting for life to start." She sang. "Somebody kind who touches your mind, will suddenly touch your heart."
Johanna took up the tune, "When that happens, after it happens. Nothing is quite the same, somehow I know, I'll jump up a go if ever he calls me name." She described a feeling she hadn't ever felt. She didn't feel a fire when she was around Anthony, she only saw him as a means of escape. It struck her fully, She didn't love Anthony, not really.
"Gone are your old ideas of life, the old ideas grow dim." Ellie hummed, "Lo and behold you're someone's wife, and you belong to him." Johanna flinched, she didn't want to belong to anyone. That's what the Judge used to Imply, that she was his properly, his Johanna. No, she could never do that ever again. She would rather die than be someone's property again.
"You may think this kind of adventure may never come to you." Ellie brushed her sister's hair from her face, "Darling sixteen going on seventeen, wait a year…"
"I'll wait a year." Johanna sang in harmony, "Just wait a year or two." They finished together. "Come live with us, Toby and I, we could get by. It's better than being stuck in a one sided marriage" Johanna paused, "You really think we could do it?"
"Of course, I'll work, Toby's old enough to do small jobs." Ellie counted off. "What do you say?" Johanna nodded slowly at first, and soon her face was split with a gleeful smile. "We'll be a real family! You and I!" Johanna agreed whole heartedly then paused, "But what will I tell Anthony? He will be heartbroken!" Ellie shook her head, "No, I will tell him. He will understand I promise." Johanna nodded.
Ellie looked around, "Get some sleep, I will take care of everything I promise." She pushed Johanna down on the bed gently. "Just Sleep." Johanna looked extremely tired and nodded, not bothering to get under to covers, simply sleeping on the bed as she was. Ellie stroked her corn silk hair until she slept soundly. Ellie's expression turned serious as she removed herself from the bed, pulled the covers over Johanna and leaned in gently. She placed a small chaste kiss on her brow. "Good night Little Sister."
She stood firm and walked over to her bag, she lifted the lid and in the top compartment she removed a pistol from the slot. The same pistol her father gave her for protection, still loaded, still unfired. She tucked the weapon in her dress folds and closed the case, casting one more look at Johanna before walking out the door and across the hall to the room Anthony and Toby had rented for the night. She knocked on the door rhythmically, as if in a trance.
Anthony opened the door, "Miss To….I mean, Miss Barker, Is Johanna alright?" Ellie nodded, "Johanna is fine, But I wonder if you would join me for a walk? There is something I need to speak with you about." Anthony nodded and looked back in the room. "The boy is sound asleep, I suppose there is no Harm in it." Ellie smiled kindly and led him down the hall and out the back kitchen doors, there was a long winding path through the woods that reached about three quarters of a league through a small patch of woods and finally reached the shore of a small sandy bay with its own private inlet.
As they walked Ellie looked around them, the woods were so beautiful. Even in her sorrowful eyes they woods were nothing short of breath taking out here. They past weeks have given her a new outlook, treasure your life. For you only get one.
"Do you love my Sister Anthony?" She asked directly, Anthony turned to her. "Of course." He replied and she cast him a doubting glance. "Even though you have barely spoken to her, Really spoken to her? Do you even know her middle name?" Anthony chuckled light heartedly, "Don't you believe in Love at first sight?" He asked. Ellie stopped suddenly and stared straight ahead, she thought of everything she had seen, everything she had felt. She looked back on everything she could possibly remember about her life and about Love.
"No"
Her answer was blunt and hard like stone. Her eyes were cold as she spoke. "People can covet, they can lust, they can desire, all at one single look. But to Love someone, truly Love someone…. You have to know them first." She looked at his with the most penetrating set of brown eyes he had ever faced and he felt the hairs on the back of his neck stand up.
"Come, the water is just ahead." She directed suddenly and took the lead toward the beach along the trodden path. Anthony caught up with her quickly, He wondered if Johanna shared her sister's feelings on love. "I'm sure Johanna feels differently," he said confidently "how do you know?" Ellie deadpanned. "After all we've done, After I rescued her. It's meant to be, we're meant to run away together and get married." Anthony explained.
Ellie felt a jolt of disgusted as the sight of the grey waters lapping at a tiny white sand beach came into sight. Such naivety was fit for children, but not for a young Man of Anthony's age. Surely no one could truly and wholeheartedly believe in such fairytale endings.
"Anthony I want you took look out at the water and tell me what you see." She instructed him, standing behind him. "I see the ocean." Anthony began as Ellie felt the lump of the gun in her dress, "What does the Ocean say to you Anthony?" she asked and she closed her eyes. It's just one last time she told herself, there's no harm in it really.
She didn't hear Anthony's answer as she pulled the pistol out of her dress, her hand steady as can be. She head was clean and cloudy, she knew what she was doing, but it felt like a day dream.
One last time, there's no harm in it really, one last time, there's no harm in it really, one last time, There's no harm in it really…. No harm in it really… One last time… One last time…. One last Time….. One last time…..
The shot rang out in the air suddenly. Birds took off from the trees but Ellie didn't worry. They were too far away for anyone to here at this hour. Anthony's dead body collapsed mid-sentence, wobbling for a split second until it simply crumpled like a paper doll. A pool of blood stained the crystal white sand as she looked out over the grey waters, the light of the moon and stars dancing on the waves.
It was so quiet.
So quiet
Ever the gulls had hushed.
The first sound to break the peace was Ellie herself, an involuntary giggle escaped her lips, first a giggle, mad and lost. Then a chuckle, Hollow and broken. Then a laugh. It was a cold, mad, terrified laugh. She laughed at her life, at her father, and Mrs. Lovett.
At the Judge and the Beetle
At Westley.
At Toby
At Pirelli
At Lucy
At Johanna
And Most of all Ellie laughed at herself.
Her own foolish self.
Ellie who ran away from home, Ellie who was forced into Prostitution at eighteen, Ellie who lived in hiding for three years with Mrs. Lovett, Ellie who found her long lost father, Ellie who was at least partly responsible for the deaths of dozens of people.
And now Ellie who was going to pull herself together, Push Anthony's body into the Brush, wade out into the water and drop the gun until it hit the very very bottom, Go back to the Inn, bring Toby into Her and Johanna's room, Board a Ship to France tomorrow Morning, and Start off fresh.
No more death, no more killing, no more darkness.
And guess what….
That's just what she did.
