Chapter Twenty-Three

Meanwhile in the midst of the battle, Loki was paying dearly for the power supply he had cut off when he sealed Tori's energy. He could no longer make tangible clones. The ones he had on the field already were losing badly because the Avengers, unlike the dark-haired trickster, had been instilled with a burning drive after they'd seen Tori fight. One clone after another, the heroes took them down.

"Damn you humans!" Loki hissed. "You shall tremble at my feet!"

He aimed his staff at the fighting heroes and with a large power up surge from the Tesseract, he fired. The blast caught the Avengers off-guard and blew them off of their feet and onto their backs…all except for the Hulk, of course. Loki's hit had knocked the large green creature back a few feet, yes, but it only made him much angrier.

As if Bruce Banner and the Hulk were thinking as one, the creature drew in on Loki and, carefully avoiding the hovering sphere which held Miss Tori Matthews, rammed the god head first. Hulk sent Loki flying back a bit and he roared as Loki hit the ground.

"Uggghhnnn," the God of Mischief groaned, slowly recovering.

Hulk turned to face the incapacitated Tori as the other heroes were getting back on their feet. He reached out his large green hand to the pulsating spherical prison in an attempt to disrupt the energy and set the girl free; however, the moment his fingers touched the barrier, a shock wave rippled forth and spread throughout the area. The force of the reaction knocked the Hulk backwards to his teammates, and as the waves travelled, the landscape around the heroes began to contort. The bleak deserted rubble of the P.E.G.A.S.U.S. lab shifted to a scene in the middle of a city street, nearly 500 miles away! The feedback pulse had warped the entire party to a space of even more danger…

…Because there were civilians in the way. Out of nowhere the six heroes, Loki, the few tangible copies of Loki that were left, and the imprisoned Tori popped into the street, where passersby stood gawking in mixes of fear and amazement.

The Laufeyson grimaced as he stood up, (as he had been shaken by the force of the shock wave as well) but in quickly sizing up the situation, he grinned wickedly. Iron Man and Captain America exchanged a glance and were thinking the same thing: he has an audience.

It was now a standoff between the Lokis and the Avengers to see which would take the first move in this new environment. Black Widow and Hawkeye eyed the real Loki, who was standing just slightly behind the line of duplicates, carefully. Thor and Hulk meanwhile, looked warily from the growing numbers of bystanders to the enemies in front of them.

Loki glanced to his left where there stood a building about ten feet away. With a quick flick of his wrist, he broke the standoff by sending a burst of energy towards the pedestrians standing in front of the building. Several large chunks of debris blew off from the wall and came crashing down.

With a determined yell, both Thor and Iron Man flew to get the civilians out of the way, but then Loki shot another blast at the building, which sent people running and screaming in terror; the debris that fell from the second blast nearly crushed the two heroes. Hawkeye shot an explosive arrow at the trickster but Loki teleported away on top of a building while his few clones continued to fight.

"Director Fury, what is going on?" the Councilwoman admonished.

Playing on several of the screens were news reports of the city the Avengers had been warped to. Fury stood in front of his superiors with a challenging expression on his face.

"My response team is apprehending the hostile," he replied casually.

The news footage showed a brief clip of the destroyed building.

"This is your plan, Director Fury?" a Councilman scoffed. "So you are leaving the fate of the Tesseract and this new asset of yours with these freaks."

Fury's eye narrowed. "I have not left anything with anyone, Councilman," the Director affirmed, crossing his arms. "The most important phase of my plan has yet to be put in motion."

"And what phase is that, Director?"

"Retrieving and suppressing the Tesseract, and reclaiming the girl from the hostile."

With the help of local policemen, the civilians were taken care of and being moved out of harm's way. Meanwhile, Loki was causing havoc for the heroes, teleporting himself and the imprisoned Tori just barely out of reach from the heroes while destroying the area around them.

There was no way he could lose to them! Not this time! Especially not with them tracking the fruits of his effort-

At the sudden thought of the Other and his superior, Loki lurched forward as the scene of his discussion with the Other played before his eyes.

"There will be no realm, no barren moon, no crevice where he cannot find you!"

"Arrghhh!" the trickster growled, shaking his head and clenching his fists. He restored his awareness just barely enough to catch the arrow that Hawkeye had shot at him, but he didn't realize it was an explosive arrow. This knocked Loki off of the building he was perched on top of and onto the ground…

…right in front of the very angry Hulk.

"Enough!" he screeched, pausing the creature for just a moment. "You creatures are all pathetic- I am a GOD and I WILL NOT BE BULLIED BY-"

Before he could finish, Hulk had snatched him by the legs and slammed the trickster on the ground back and forth about five or six times, creating quite a large crater in the ground. Loki was left battered, cut, and barely breathing, eyes wide in shock.

"Puny god," the Hulk scoffed, turning away.

While that was going on, Tony had prepared the machine that he, Bruce, and Dr. Selvig had created from the portal generator.

"Now! Do it now!" Cap shouted at Tony.

The billionaire genius nodded and activated the device. The machine hummed to life and sent out a rippling pulse that, when it reached the Tesseract in its container and Tori hovering in her spherical prison, drew them towards it. The Tesseract had been by Loki and Tori a few blocks behind where he had been smashed in by Hulk. First slowly, then gaining speed, the two gravitated towards the device.

"Yes, it's working!" Clint cheered.

The Tesseract reached the device first, and as it entered in it, its energy was steadily being suppressed, which in turn decreased the stability of the energy sphere that held Tori. As she neared, the barrier had dissipated and she was hovering, spread-eagle, the blue glow surrounding her body slowly converging towards her heart and then streamlining into the device.

"Don't worry, maestro, we got you," Tony muttered with a smile, as the last of the energy was pulled from Tori in one final spurt.

A shockwave sent the girl flying backwards, unconscious, and with a deft hand, the Hulk caught her as began to return to his human state.

"Everything's fine now," Bruce said with a weary smile. The team all nodded and Bruce attended to the teen while the others handled Loki.

They had won.
