Chapter Twenty-Four

They had won.

My head felt heavy and my throat felt dry. I was aching all over. The last thing I remembered was sitting down next to Loki, and then some kind of explosion. It all went black after that. All black, no dreams, no nothing.

Little by little, now though, I could hear familiar voices floating around.

"When will she awaken?"

"I don't know, that kind of power flowing through a kid like her, it could really take its toll."

"I hope she's alright."

"Her vitals are stable, and she's breathing normally. It's probably just exhaustion."

I could feel light on my eyes and I could feel them start twitching.

"Look! She's waking up!"

Blinking my eyes to get rid of the blurriness, I woke up to see all six heroes gathered around me. They all smiled; relieved to see I was awake. I began to say something, but then I stopped myself, furrowing my eyebrows. It was my fault that this mess happened. I clenched my fists underneath whatever covers were overtop of me.

"I….I'm sorry everyone," I spoke softly. "I messed everything up. I shouldn't have caused you all trouble and made you worry. I'm really sorry."

I was shocked when I was pulled into a group hug.

"It's alright, kid. We're just glad you're okay," Clint muttered, patting my head.

"Everything's going to be fine, and now we can get you back home, Tori," Natasha added, smiling warmly.

My eyes welled up and I hugged them all back tightly.

"Thank you!"

We all gathered at the edge of a park where Thor said that he would be able to return to Asgard using the Tesseract with Loki in tow. The god of mischief in question was cuffed and had a muzzle on his face.

We exchanged a wordless glance, Loki and I, and it might have just been my imagination, but perhaps he softened his expression. Perhaps he gained new understanding. Perhaps we made a connection. I couldn't really say for sure.

As they all pulled me into one final embrace, I felt a sudden influx of my power surge. Visions flashed before my eyes of all of them, and I tensed up.

Tony pulled back and glanced at me. "You alright, maestro?" he asked with a chuckle hiding his worry.

I nodded, though internally a bit shaken from what I saw. "I'm just…really gonna miss you guys. All of you. A lot."

"We're gonna miss you too, Tori," Bruce replied, and the others nodded to affirm their sentiments. I looked down at the ground, childishly stalling my return home.

Tony pulled out a small box from his inside suit pocket and offered it to me. Surprised, I took it, and when I opened it I gasped with an incredulous laugh.

"Just a little gift to remember us by, maestro."

Inside the box were two items: a necklace, with two pendants affixed, a fragment of the stone that had been stuck in my palm and a ring made from pieces of Tony's Iron Man armor; and a StarkPhone- it was unlike any cell phone I had ever seen! I glanced up at Tony, grinning from ear to ear.

"That's in case you ever wind up spelunking through universes again. All of our contact information is programmed on it so if there's ever a signal, give us a call," the billionaire genius offered.

"I will! I definitely will!" I replied, hugging him again. I went and hugged each one of them one more time before Dr. Selvig created a small portal for me. I held back my tears, I felt choked up. I didn't want to leave, really. But I had to go home.

"Farewell, Avengers~ Earth's mightiest heroes!"

"What do you mean the girl is no longer here, Director?"

"The Avengers returned her to the parallel world she came from," Fury explained, almost smugly to his superiors.

"You couldn't have kept her here to-?"

"Well, I might have been able to, but then I would have had to contend with the backbite of six highly skilled heroes," Fury interrupted. The Director crossed his arms. "And so would all of you."

All of the Council members glanced at each other with relatively blank faces, though they held overtones of grimaces. There was nothing they could do really.

"Do you think it's safe, letting these people loose on the world, given how powerful they are?" the Councilwoman continued, skirting around the topic.

"The whole world knows it," Fury simply replied. "Every world knows it."

"Was that the point of all of this? A statement?"

"A promise."

With that comment, Director Fury ended the meeting and exited the room, meeting up with Agent Hill and affirming to her that he knew the heroes would reunite the next time the world was in danger.

Because the world would need the Avengers.

Alexander Pierce glared coldly at his computer monitor after the council had informed him of the recent events.

"I'm disappointed in you, Nick," he whispered coldly.

It was like an elaborate daydream.

On the other side of the portal, I stood at the pool, at sunset, as if nothing had ever changed. The only proof of my adventure lay with the necklace and the StarkPhone I had received.

With a new enlightenment but also a new exhaustion, I made my way home and went to my room.

I stared blankly at my drawer of "hidden treasures" and sighed, placing the now-useless StarkPhone in it next to the equally-as-defunct Titans Communicator. I touched the pendant lightly and thought over the last visions I saw.

"We create our own demons."

"You don't know who I am. You don't know where I am. And you'll never see me coming."

"It was always me, Tony, right from the start! I AM THE MANDARIN!"

"You must be truly desperate to come to me for help. What makes you think you can trust me?"

"I will reclaim the Aether. I will restore our world. And I will put an end to this poisoned universe."

"See you in Hel, monster!"

"For 70 years, HYDRA has been secretly feeding crises, reaping war. And when history did not cooperate, history was changed."

"If you want to stay ahead of me, Mr. Secretary… you need to keep both eyes open."

"I'm with you till the end of the line."

"This is the age of miracles…and there's nothing more horrifying than a miracle."

"Every time someone tries to stop a war before it starts, innocent people die."

"I don't trust a person without a dark side."

"Avengers, I'm going to show you the end of the world."

I took a deep breath, and shut the drawer. For a brief moment, I wondered if I should have told the Avengers what I saw, if I should have stayed. Sitting on my bed, I chuckled hollowly. No; what good would it have done? If I were meant to return, I would, and hopefully the visions that I had seen wouldn't pick one or more of them off. It wouldn't have done them any good to warn them and worry them. I knew though, if I were to return, things would definitely be different. I glanced back at the closed drawer with a tired smile.

"Until we meet again, I suppose."
