It had only been a few weeks and Katara had adjusted to life in the Fire Nation Palace easily. In the mornings she would do yoga then have a lite breakfast with Iroh and Zuko. In the afternoons, she would practice her bending, then meet with Shyu to learn about the Fire Nation and the traditions. After dinner, Katara and Zuko would often spend time in the royal gardens by the turtle duck pond.
One evening after dinner, Katara went to find Zuko feeding the turtle ducks. She decided to sneak up on him. She came up behind him.
"Katara," said Zuko. Katara jumped and landed against the tree. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah," said Katara as she got up from the ground. "I guess that's what I get for trying to sneak up on you."
"Why were you?"
"I was trying to surprise you," Katara replied. Zuko looked up at Katara as she stood in front of him. "I heard you're commissioning a statue in Aang's honor."
"Who told you?" Zuko asked.
"Sokka," said Katara. She sat down beside him. "Who else?"
"Well, I didn't think you had talked to Aang, but I didn't know," said Zuko.
"What's he up to?" Katara asked.
Zuko looked at her with a quirked up brow, slightly confused. "He's doing okay. He's a little stressed with the wedding preparations, but he seems fine otherwise. Why don't you talk to him? I know you said you wanted him to let go of you..."
Katara took a deep breath, she knew Zuko was trying not to upset her. "I guess I should talk to him, but I said some harsh words."
"He'll forgive you," said Zuko with confidence.
"I don't know," said Katara doubtful.
"Trust me," said Zuko. Zuko got up and helped Katara up. Then they went inside.
Aang and Xing Ying had finished training.
"Aang, I know you've been busy helping to rebuild and create a new world. But I need some help with the invitations. I want to send them out soon. We are getting married right?"
"I've thought a lot about it, and I want to tell you everything. I know we've known each other a few years, but there are somethings we don't know about each other. I'm sure you've heard stories, but I want you to know the truth. I hope it will give you peace of mind and we can get married, but I'll understand if you change your mind," Aang replied.
"Go on, I'm listening," Xing Ying replied.
"I guess I should start from the time I found out I was the Avatar. The Council of Elders called me into a meeting. They showed me my old toys and told me I was the Avatar. I didn't know how to react, and after I found out everything changed. The other airbenders would leave me out of their games. I started adjusting to this with the help of Monk Gyatso, but then something worse happened. The monks were going to send me to the Eastern Air Temple to complete my training and keep me from Gyatso. I was afraid and I ran away. I was in a storm and I must have entered the Avatar State. A hundred years passed and Katara and Sokka found me and Appa in an iceberg. We traveled all over the world. We headed to the Northern Water Tribe to learn waterbending from a master. Katara had to prove herself to Master Pakku and he taught us as well as his other students. After a while, she surpassed me and became my waterbending teacher. We headed to the Earth Kingdom to find an earthbending teacher. Then we met Toph. She taught me earthbending. She also discovered metalbending. Sokka planned an invasion on the solar eclipse, but we failed. We went to the Western Air Temple for refuge. Zuko joined us then. We went and learned firebending from the last dragons, and Zuko continued to train me. I learned energybending from a lion turtle. I faced Fire Lord Ozai and took his bending away," said Aang.
"Wow, I didn't know," said Xing Ying.
"There are more adventures that I didn't mention. Trips on the way to the North Pole. But you get the general idea. After the war ended, Zuko made me promise to end his life if he ever went bad. I almost did, but Katara stopped me. We had issues to work out and we decided to break up. It wasn't an easy decision. During the war, I thought she was my forever girl, but after the war was over, things had changed between us. I heard that she took it really hard. I stayed away. I thought she needed time. Before I realized it, I found myself falling in love with you," said Aang. He took Xing Ying's hands. "I love you. I want us to be together for as long as we live."
Xing Ying teared up. She replied, "I love you, too."
"I know you wondered about me and Katara. I want to be clear, there is nothing between her and I anymore. I did love her, but that's in the past. She let me go. I let her go. It's over," said Aang. "I hoped we could be friends, but I realize now that is unrealistic."
"I-I don't know what to say," said Xing Ying.
"You don't have to say anything," Aang replied.
"So, who should we invite?" Xing Ying asked.
"Who do you want to invite?" Aang asked, unsure of who Xing Ying wanted to come.
"I'm asking you," replied Xing Ying.
"Well, I'd like the whole world to be there, but that's..." replied Aang.
"I see. Well, I'd like to invite my family, the Air Acolytes, and your friends," said Xing Ying. "How does that sound?"
"It sounds perfect. Let's make out the invitations," Aang replied.
Invitations were sent out.
Iroh, Zuko, and Katara each received an invitation.
"I'm surprised he sent us each one," Katara said as she opened the scroll.
"I'm feeling relieved he sent you an invitation," said Zuko. Then he put his hands up expecting to be splashed or hit with a snowball.
"I'm not sure how I feel," said Katara confused.
"It's understandable," said Iroh. "I'm sure Aang wants you there."
"Yeah," Katara smiled sadly. "I did tell him that Sokka and I would be his family."
Zuko said nothing.
"I'll go," said Katara. She looked at Zuko and asked, "Will you be my date?"
"Of course," Zuko replied.
Stay tuned...
