I had major writer's block. Sorry for the late update. Anyway I really like this chapter. It kinda switches POV's in the middle, but I think you'll be able to figure it out. Who loved Everblaze? ME! *Spolier Alert for Everblaze* Did any of you notice how my take on Brant was pretty similar to Everblaze?
Sophie stepped out of the healing center feeling overwhelmed. What will Alden say? What will Fitz and Keefe think of me? For a moment she almost considered going back. But she squared her shoulders and took a deep breath. She knew she was supposed to go see Brant. She had to finish her mission.
Sophie lightleaped to Havenfield and clambered over to the fence leading down to the caves. She pressed her finger against the silver square. It glowed green and then unlocked. Sophie took a quick glance behind her then hurried down to the caves. Her heart beat fast at the thought of seeing Brant again. What had happened to him?
When she finally reached the caves she felt the all too familiar sense of déjà vu. A shiver went up her spine. It wasn't exactly her favorite place to be. She stepped quietly onto the rocks and peered into the caves. Brant was supposed to be here right? That would explain the salty sea odor she smelled when Grady and Alden came into the Healing Center to see her. Sophie didn't see him. She walked deeper into the caves. There he was. Brant looked normal except that he was bound in thick steel cords and his face was oddly translucent. Sophie tip toed to him. He didn't seem to be awake.
It felt weird to her that Alden would just leave Brant in a lonely cave with only ropes to hold him back. Surely there was more to this than she thought. But alas, the closer she got to him, the more it seemed that there really weren't any extra security measures. SMACK. Sophie's face hit an invisible force. She stumbled backwards tripping on a stone and landing on her side. Pain shot up her back. What the heck was that? Sophie got up despite the burning sensation on the left side of her body. Her arm was still bandaged. She walked cautiously up to Brant with her hand held out in front of her.
Her hand touched an invisible icy wall. She slid her fingers over the wall, awed by the way her hand seemed to touch something that wasn't there.Suddenly a loud beep was emitted from over her head, and something prickly touched her shoulder. Ouch, what was that? Sophie caught a glimpse of an orange dart stuck into her skin. The world turned an odd shade of green, then purple, then yellow. A laugh escaped her lips. What was so funny? Everything was funny. Her legs lost feeling and she stumbled to the side slamming her head on the cave wall. She laughed again. She caught one last glimpse of Brant and burst into giggles that didn't seem to be her own. Her body slumped towards the ground.
Bright streaming lights flashed in my eyes. Loud pounding voices filled my ears. What was this? These weren't my own thoughts. Surely not. I opened my eyes only to shut them again. The light was too much. The noise was too much. Everything… was absolute overkill. I put my palms to my forehead and tried to squeeze out the sound. It didn't work. I opened my eyes again, barely, only a sliver. I was hooked up to big metal things. This didn't make sense. Where was I? A sudden pressure squeezed my hand. I tilted my head slowly toward my arm. Every movement ached. A hand was clutching mine. "It'll be alright Soybean. I promise you. Hold in there."
Dad? Older, more sophisticated, thoughts entered my head. I tried to mentally claw them out. What was this, some sort of trick? A young man in a white lab coat hovered over me. "She should be fine. You say she fell?" "Yes." "She's 5 right?" "That's right." I looked up at the man. He was young with pale gray blue eyes. "Sophie?" I twisted in my cot. I didn't like this man. "Sophie?" Why was he so close to me? "Sophie?" Why was he smiling like that? A panic started to bubble in my chest. "Sophie?"
"Sophie?" Sophie opened her eyes to find her forehead covered in sweat. Alden was sitting right next to her. "Whahappnd?" Her words came out sluggish and sloppy. "You trigged the alarm and got shot by one of our darts." "Your dart?" Alden held up an orange dart about the size of his pinky. "Yes, these darts were designed to help us catch anybody who would try and sneak Brant out. We just never thought it would be you." He looked away. "Sorry I guess I should have told you where I was going. I really needed to talk to Brant and I didn't think you'd let me." Alden sighed. "That's right, I probably wouldn't let you go see him Sophie. But that doesn't mean you have to sneak out of the healing center to come see him. We could have worked something out. I'm not even going to ask how you knew he was here." Now it was Sophie's turn to sigh. Alden continued, "But… why'll we're here, I guess it couldn't hurt to let you talk to Brant." Sophie's face lit up. "Only for a few minutes though." He said.
Sophie turned to face Brant and gasped when her eyes fell upon his face. She backed up tripping over a stone again. Luckily Alden caught her. "Sophie what is it?" he said. "Him-," she managed to choke out. "What about him?" "He's the one who was in the hospital when I hit my head. He was the doctor." "Excuse me?" Alden stammered. Sophie looked up at Brant again. Why had he been there?
