Chapter 12: The Right Path
As Vergil kicked the door opened of the abandoned church, she saw 'Kat', being helpless as the hulking demon is seething in front of her.
"Vergil!" Kat screamed as she was grabbed by the ferocious beast.
"Kat!" Vergil tried to call her.
Then suddenly, the beast let 'Kat' go, dropping the helpless 'woman'. And then it roared and went into a portal. Vergil wondered why. Snapped on his stupor, Vergil ran into 'Kat'.
"Kat, are you ok?"
Then 'Kat' replied as she slowly got up. "I'm fine... and you're dead." Her voice went from normal from something malevolent. She is surrounded by a suffocating dark aura.
"What is she talking about?" Vergil thought. "Kat, I'm here and I'm still alive."
"But you're dead... here, you know that?" The malevolent 'Kat' told him. "It's funny that you were sent into this hell to understand humanity."
Vergil is turned off a bit when she said that. So he began to explain.
"I rescued you from the demons, remember? Gave you a home... a reason to live."
But 'Kat' retorted with a sinister look on her face. "No, you used me and you betrayed me."
"Everything you hate me for, it had to be done."
Then 'Kat' snickered on Vergil's response. "Really? You deceived us, Vergil. Me and your brother."
Vergil flinched on the mention of his brother, Dante.
"Dante... Now that's a real man. You're weak, almost pitiful. You will never be half the man he is!" And she finished with a smirk. This is now a low for Vergil since for him, it went all to waste. He thought that 'Kat' now hates him. And he frowned in anger.
"You're right!"
Another voice was heard inside the ruined chapel. The angered Vergil was surprised that he is not alone with the Demon Kat. The demonic apparition of Kat turned around; Vergil sets his eyes on the one who had that voice calling out to Kat.
'That voice... It can't be!' Vergil said in thought.
Then out of the shadows appears a woman: clad in white, holding a sheathed sword, straight black hair.
"...And you're wrong."
Kagura Mikazuchi has finally arrived. She saw both Vergil and the demonic apparition of Kat.
"Kagura!" Vergil called out her name.
"Oh, what's this?" the demonic Kat sneered. "Another one of your pawns, later to be thrown away in the pit?"
Then the demonic Kat walked into Kagura.
"So... Kagura, eh?" the demonic Kat made a greeting that the swordswoman herself find it troubling; it was more of a mocking tone.
'Kat' walks around Kagura as she observed her appearance. On the other hand, the swordswoman from Earth Land kept her calm demeanor. "Nice outfit you have there."
Then the demonic apparition stopped walking and now, 'Kat' sneered on Kagura while the latter glared the former. "Anyways, what's the point of you coming here? Help him? Please, don't give me with that shit. He will deceive you, use you and betray you just like me."
'Kat' walked closely into Kagura. "So if I were you..." then the snickering 'Kat' pointed at Vergil "It's better if you will kill him!"
Kagura looked on Vergil. On the other hand, Vergil wasn't surprised on 'Kat's vehement tirade. He knows that if you reveal your true intentions, there are people who will react in either in a positive or a negative view. He even remembered on his disagreement with Dante after they defeated Mundus.
Until Kagura speaks her mind as she closed her eyes. "Yes, I get what you are trying to say."
"Wonderful." Kat replied in a sadistic glee. "Then go ahead... and snuff that worthless, wretched vile thing!"
"Kagura..." Vergil doesn't even know what to do at this point. But he is ready to fight her if that is to happen.
"You have a point that this man will just use me and then he can betray me in the long run. But..." Before she continued, she opened her eyes and turned to 'Kat'.
"I believe that everything we do, the decisions we make, either some people will like it or not, there is always a reason."
"Heh, do I give a crap about that?" 'Kat' replied apathetically.
"If that man was as vile, wretched, backstabbing son of a bitch just like you said, I want to ask you..."
'Kat' then quirked an eyebrow as if she was curious about what will Kagura say next.
"Why you didn't allow Vergil to be killed... at the hands of his own brother?" Kagura finally asked.
Then 'Kat' decided to shrug it off with a chuckle since it seems the thought is ridiculous to her. "C'mon, Dante stabbed Vergil because he deserves it!"
"No." Kagura retorted calmly. "That Dante, you stopped him. You stopped him from killing his own brother."
This irritated 'Kat'. "What? What are you talking about!?"
Vergil was even surprised from what he has heard. Kagura began to talk.
"I've seen everything. When Vergil was stabbed by his brother, you come into him. You kneel down, begging and pleading, just to put off his sword from Vergil's chest."
And this totally caught off the demon. She gritted her teeth.
"And there is a reason why you stopped him." Kagura continued. "You still care for Dante… and Vergil, right?"
"N-No!" 'Kat' suddenly went to an outburst as she tries to vehemently deny Kagura's claims. "I only care for Dante and not him! He says that I'm just useful; his pawn!" She finished when she again, pointed Vergil.
"Filthy lies." Kagura retorted loudly. "If that is the case, why you begged Dante to relent? That's because not only you want Dante to become a monster, but deep inside… you still care for Vergil. Am I right?"
Then something crosses into Vergil's mind: memories. Those memories were where she first met Kat, saving her from the demons, the many times he protected her and... The feelings they have for each other, which he erased them later on. Now it's coming back to him.
This made 'Kat' flinched and she seethed in anger. After a few moments, she chuckled and went into hysterical laughter.
Then 'Kat', in her demonic form, grabbed Kagura's neck. Kagura stood firm as if she tries to endure the pain.
"Nothing else matters in the place. Now you die, bitch!" the demon Kat growled as it slowly tightens the grip Kagura's neck. The latter gritted her teeth in pain.
"I s-see. You're n-not the… real K-Kat. Y-you're just…. a-another vile demon!" said Kagura, trying to hold back.
"Now you know." the demon grinned evilly. "I will finish you off right here!"
"Kagura!" Vergil called out to the helpless girl. And now he finds out that the 'Kat' she is talking to was a demon.
"Vergil, stay back and stay where you are!" the demon looked at Vergil, holding Kagura in harm's way. "I'm sure you want to see her die and leaver her, because like what I said earlier, this bitch is another pawn of yours. C'mon, admit it!"
Vergil crackled his right hand. He doesn't even what to do at this point since the demon held the poor woman in its clutches.
"You're not even real. Damn! I'm slowly losing my sanity…"
Then another memory crosses into his mind.
"I just can't. No matter what our feelings say… we have to forget them. Just like my father… I'm just going to erase the memories of these last few days. After I'm done, all we'll be… are members of The Order. I'm so sorry…"
"Hey."
"Hmm?" the demon 'Kat' turned to Vergil.
"Leave her alone." Vergil mumbled.
"What?" the demon mockingly inquired.
With a flicker of his right hand, Vergil summoned his Demon Summoned Sword to pull the demon into him, letting Kagura go. The demon suddenly appeared in front of Vergil as he executes a side kick, hitting the demon to the right side. As the demon staggered, Vergil went to a drawing stance, with his Yamato glowing crimson; he started to unsheathe his sword
"Leave…" he started with a drawing slash attack. But it was more of a heavy
"Her…" then the second is a heavy left slash.
"ALONE!"
And finally, he finished with another heavy right slash which is so powerful that it sent the demon into the concrete wall of the chapel. He executed the move called Divorce.
Kagura knelt down as she is recovering from the demon's choke. As she got up while coughing, she saw Vergil, downcast. She wanted to make sure that Vergil is alright.
She began to walk into him and she saw something unusual as she gaped: Vergil has crimson eyes, demonic in a sense.
"Vergil..." Kagura uttered.
"No, don't look at me." Vergil turned away because he is afraid to see him as a monster due to his crimson eyes.
To be honest, the Mermaid Heel mage is worried. "But-"
"I said no!" Vergil repeated again.
"You are afraid, aren't you?" the female swordsman asked.
"I-I don't know." Vergil gives an unsure answer. "I just don't want to hurt you, that's why." Trying to shrug it off as his eyes returned to normal, he asked the woman. "How about you, are you okay?"
She replied with a relieving smile. "I'm fine, and I'm still in one piece."
"We're both." Vergil turned to face Kagura and the latter saw that his eyes returned to normal silver.
"By the way, thank you for saving me." Kagura thanked Vergil.
"Don't mention it". The Nephilim replied. Before Kagura walked closely, she sensed that someone… or something is coming closer to them. And then a ferocious demon bursts out from the wall, and on a leash. It has white fur and its eyes are red but and it resembles like a ferocious wildcat. It belongs to a group of demons known as Rage but this one is different: it was twice the size of ordinary Rages and it was twice powerful. But above all, this Rage manifested from the demon illusion of Kat. And then, it began to speak with a growl.
"Do you think this is over? All of you will be minced into pieces!" the Rage roared, ready to kill its prey… or let us say preys.
Vergil narrowed his eyes on the ferocious beast. He now realized that Kat he chased was not the real one. This is one of the few and upcoming ploys to plunge himself into darkness. Not to mention his insanity. Now, Vergil is calm and prepared.
On the other hand, Kagura went side by side with the Nephilim. And then she turned to him, "Need a little help?"
Instead of answering, Vergil asks a question. "How do you know… everything?"
Then she answered. But she also had an idea. "I'll tell you after we finished that demon." She pointed on the Rage.
Vergil smirked. "Fair enough."
"But on one condition." said Kagura.
"Hm?" Vergil wanted know what it is.
"Can you tell me… about Kat?"
Vergil was a bit surprised. So he answered. "Fine by me." And then he smirked.
Then both of them prepared themselves. They are now ready for another grueling battle together as the both hold the grips of their respective swords.
Angelos was still sitting on her throne, still watching through her orb. She flinched a bit due to the fact that her plan failed. But she is still a bit confident.
"Something wrong, Mistress?" One Drekavac looked at his master.
The Dark Nephilim Queen turned her attention to her demon servant while watching.
"A bit…" she answered. "I thought this will be easy, but I guess I was wrong." Actually, Angelos wasn't bit happy since things didn't go well in her way.
"Drekavac." She called out her demon servant.
"Your orders, Mistress?" the demon responded.
Angelos began. "Gather your group and prepare their arms. These two beings will do everything to escape from my realm."
"It will be done, Mistress." the Drekavac disappeared through his own portal. And then the Dark Nephilim Queen turned back on the orb.
"Hmmm... Vergil. Maybe you can survive this. But no one can escape from their own darkness until you face it." Angelos sneered. And then she looked on the female swordswoman.
"You're also interesting, human girl..."
The battle is tough than expected. The Great Rage continues its ferocious assault while one swordsman and one swordswoman are spending time dodging its attacks. One relies on her speed, quickness and reflexes while the other one also did the same yet more calm and calculated using his teleporting abilities. As they landed in a safe spot away from the raging demon, both of them are a bit exhausted, looking at the sneering ferocious beast.
"This is a tough one." Kagura commented yet a bit fatigued.
"I've faced demons like this before, so it's no surprise to me." Vergil said. "It seems we will have a hard time."
Kagura got up and turned to Vergil. "Any strategy you have in mind?"
Then Vergil replied. "I think I spotted its weakness." Then he pointed on something. "See its four legs?"
"Yes." Kagura turned her eyes on the demon's legs.
"Its legs should be weakened with our attacks. Projectiles would be a great help." Vergil said.
"Hmm... maybe I can do that with my Gravity Sword." she commented.
"Then it's settled." the Nephilim agreed. "You attack its legs."
"How about you?" Kagura asked.
"I'll just do my own way."
Kagura nodded. As the ferocious demon roars and begins to charge on the two, both Kagura and Vergil ran forward. Vergil jumped into the Great Rage while Kagura slides down, avoiding the demon's deadly jaws. While sliding, Kagura summoned four Gravity Swords and throw them at the specified targets. She made it safely out after the slide, going behind from the demon. That made the said demon stopped its movements due to the sheer force of Kagura's Gravity magic through her embedded swords.
For Vergil, this is his chance to attack. While in the air, he then throws a number of Summoned Swords, targeting the head. And the swords made a direct hit, damaging the large beast. Then he activates his Demon Stance; making his Yamato glowing red. He landed on the demon's back. He unsheathed his Yamato and raised it with a reverse grip. With the crimson energy glowing in his Yamato as it was charged, he strikes the charged sword down into the demon's back. As the demon roared in pain, it stumbled into the ground, real hard. Not to mention that through the sheer force of his Yamato makes the damage even more devastating, as it made large cracks on the ground. He executed his strong move called the Volcano.
"Such devastating power; much more like my Archenemy's, but he channelled that energy and it strikes down the demon." Kagura awed while she kept her right hand in a steady pace to make sure her Gravity Swords would still be in effect.
Vergil jumped off from the ferocious demon and went beside Kagura.
"Did we take him down?" Kagura inquired, just to make sure that they succedded.
Vergil replied with a mumble. "Not yet…"
Kagura turned and she saw that the demon is starting to struggle. Sensing danger, Kagura motioned her right hand with added strength for more control of her Gravity Swords, just to keep the demon at bay. But suddenly, the Great Rage changed its behaviour and it became more ferocious yet more dangerous than ever; its skin change from normal black to crimson red and it was surrounded with a flaming aura, showing its feral yet brutal demeanor.
"What now?" Kagura tried to ask Vergil.
"We need to evade its attacks as long as we can. That demon becomes very dangerous in that state." Vergil explained for her.
The assault of the raging demon has finally begun. The two get away from its deadly right claw. But the demon doesn't stop as it continues its rampage. The two warriors are doing everything they can to keep at pace: evading and dodging its attacks.
Both of them landed on the ground as they reached in the corner of the large church hall. As the demon made the charge, Vergil teleported away and Kagura evaded once again. But unfortunately, she stumbled a bit and she looked that there is a cut on her right leg. And it was bleeding.
"Crap, I got hit!" She winced in pain a bit.
The berserk demon roared and charged on the woman. Vergil turned and he saw the demon is a few meters away from Kagura; going in for the kill through its ferocious claws.
"Kagura!" Seeing the woman in danger, Vergil performs a Demon Pull through his demonic Summoned Sword. Kagura thought that the end is upon her as the claw of the demon is few inches away from her. The Summoned Sword made a contact as it hit Kagura and in a flash, she disappeared. The demon's claw hit the ground instead, making an impact. Kagura reappeared and Vergil catches her.
The Nephilim inquired. "You okay?"
"I'm fine." Kagura replied. Then as she looked at her wound on her leg, it's still bleeding.
Vergil tried to help but Kagura stood up instead. "It's okay. It's just a scratch. I can still fight."
Vergil decided to let it slide because he needs Kagura to defeat her. It's not that he was using her, but everytime he was with the female mage, he has felt something unusual. Something warm. Something…
"Every time I was with her, I feel… peaceful."
Then Vergil sets his sights on the demon, which it cools off after its rampage "Alright, the demon has cooled off. Now is our chance."
Kagura agreed. They both faced the demon once again as the prepared their own weapons. As the Nephilim tries to draw Yamato, he turned to Kagura. He saw that she put her Archenemy into her own strap.
"What are you doing?" He asked.
And with a somewhat angelic aura, there is something that forms into Kagura's back. It all makes sense to Vergil now. What appears on her back is a sword, yet it flows with a different aura. The Sword of Uriel.
Kagura holds the tilt of her new weapon as she finally draws it. And it glows with mesmerizing angelic energy.
"Where did you get that sword, Kagura?"
"Long story," she replied. "But this one could help." As she readies her sword, she turned to Vergil. "I'm going to beat him with this. You're going to throw some 'swords' for me."
Getting what Kagura tries to imply, Vergil agreed so he nodded in response. "If you say so."
Now with her Uriel sword, Kagura rushed forward for an attack. Vergil teleported upward and he began to summon eight Summoned Swords; he threw them one by one with speed and finesse as it hit the demon's head. It helps both as damage and distraction against the enemy. The demon staggered due to the hits taken from the Summoned Swords.
Seeing an opening for an attack, Kagura continued to dash forward and launched herself in the air. And then, while falling down towards, she performed a slash attack, hitting the head of the ferocious demon. While floating in the air, she continued to slash the demon until it becomes a series of slashes, performing a combo move, which is called the Aerial Rave.
The demon tried to counter using its jaws, but Kagura stopped it by throwing her Gravity Sword at the demon, embedding it. Motioning her right hand down, Kagura took down the Great Rage into the ground with her strength. The demon tries to struggle to get up but Kagura sees this as an opportunity to attack. Kagura now lunges forward in a dashing form, and hits the enemy with a powerful thrust using her Uriel, with the angelic aura flowing from it. It was called the Stinger attack. It greatly damaged the demon but Kagura didn't stop there as she deepens the thrust that made the glowing sword embedded into the beast.
"Now, Vergil!"
The Nephilim nodded and Kagura's call; he goes on a drawing stance, preparing his Yamato. He gathered and channeled his power into the sword. And in one quick and precise unsheathing strike, Vergil unleashed his Judgment Cut slash vortex attack. But this is far more different: it is larger and wider than the normal Judgment Cut; more like a more powerful and more devastating slash vortex. The technique was called Perfect Slice. As it connects to Kagura's embedded glowing broad sword, the slash vortex grew ten times in power and size. The Great Rage received massive damage from the combined powers of the Perfect Slice attack from Vergil's Yamato and the angelic aura from Kagura's Uriel broadsword.
Both warriors saw the total annihilation of the ferocious demon as it shatters into nothingness. Finally, it was defeated. It's a sigh of relief for Vergil. And Kagura? She is not just relieved but also glad.
"We beat him." Kagura said while in fatigue.
"Nice strategy you have there." Vergil replied while sheathing back his Yamato. "You did a great job." He complemented as he walked into Kagura.
"No," she retorted as she turned to Vergil. "We did."
Then Vergil turned his attention into Kagura's new broadsword that was stuck into the ground after the demon turned into dust. As he got it, his eyes widened as he felt the surge of energy from the sword.
Kagura was astonished on what she saw. "Vergil…!"
And then Vergil engulfed himself in a bright light. Kagura shielded herself from the blinding light. As it faded away, she saw Vergil, the angelic aura flowing on him. It implies that not only he received a new power from the sword but he also felt something different.
"Finally, I've been searching for this… all my life. This power… it cleanses, it purifies me. Not just my body… but my soul."
He remembered the times that he often uses his Devil Trigger when fighting demons, and even Kat's warning. Those erased memories are totally coming back to him. And the aura is gone as it was now inside him.
Kagura walked into Vergil. "What was that just now…?"
Vergil snapped out of his thoughts and he turned to Kagura. "Where did you get this sword?"
Kagura startled a bit when he asked that. So she answered, "I defeat some demon apparition."
"A demon apparition?"
Kagura nodded. "But when I defeated that apparition, a soul came out from it. It was an angel."
Vergil was a bit surprised. "An angel? So this power was… Yes, I understand now…" The Nephilim is relieved because he was also searching for angels for so long since the fight against the demon king Mundus.
But he frowned when something entered in his thoughts: while he was searching for his brother Dante, he was also searching for both angels and demons during his time as leader of The Order, where he also found Kat. Due to the effects of his Devil Trigger, not only he is starting to lose his own humanity, but also to fall in own powers and even affecting his personality. After all, he cares for human beings. But because of the strain the Devil Trigger that gave him, he became obsessed on overthrowing Mundus and not saving and understanding humanity, pulling the notion that he wants to rule over them. No wonder why Kat and Dante never agreed on his plan because in the long run, he will be just like Mundus.
"Dante is right: it's not too late…." Vergil hit a realization while he still got a hold on Kagura's sword. And he looked back on the girl.
"Do you know where I can find this angel?" he asked.
Kagura wasn't sure. "I don't know. She came around from nowhere. But all I know is that… she is around in this realm."
"Maybe we should find that angel… even we've gone in separate ways…" Vergil told her.
But before Kagura tries to respond, she winced in pain due to her wound in her leg.
"Hey, you're injured." Vergil went near to the Mermaid Heel mage to check on her. And it was still bleeding.
She chuckled in response. "I told you, it's just a scratch…"
Then suddenly she passed out due to being exhausted. In a hurry, Vergil caught her.
"Kagura! Hey!" Then he sighed. "She passed out…"
Vergil carried her bridal style and placed her in one of the church benches in the chapel. As he saw the wound, he reaches to his pocket and picks a handkerchief. He used the handkerchief and tied it to the wounded part to stop the bleeding. With a sigh of relief, Vergil continued to stare on her; he was marveled at her beauty. And then… he smiled. Not on cunningness or a snark, but a comforting one.
"You are really something, Kagura…"
He got up and before he went to lean on a wall to rest himself, he turned back to the girl.
"Thank you…"
He leaned into the wall and closes his eyes, drifting himself to sleep.
"Yay! They did it!"
Mika jumped and leaped in joy as she celebrated Kagura and Vergil's victory. On the other hand, Lucia mused on the two warriors. They were both watching on a crystal ball, which Lucia owned.
"Seems like you are jubilant as ever, Mika?" Lucia plastered a smile.
"Of course, I do!" Mika beamed at the silver-eyed angel. "Nee-chan and that white-haired mister are great together."
When the little girl giggled, Lucia responded with a smile. Afterwards, she looked back into the crystal as she saw both Kagura and Vergil resting.
"Well done, Son of Sparda." Lucia commended inwardly. "But your path of redemption has just begun. You must take the right path: the path that leads to the light…"
And her eyes turned to the sleeping Kagura…
"Kagura Mikazuchi, you impressed me very well. You are a woman with a strong will and a gentle heart; one who will guide a lost soul to the right path. I know you can do it."
With new-found confidence and hope, Lucia is looking forward for the events to come.
Phantom Vergil is still standing on his own realm. And he noticed that there is something happening about the large beating, which it represents the heart of Vergil. Instead of slowly closing its 'wound', it engulfed in a bright light and the 'wound' disappeared in a flash. It means that Vergil himself repaired the 'wound' by finding the light and not to dwell into darkness. Not to mention that he is the power that represents Vergil's darkened heart.
And the hollowed Vergil narrowed his eyes. He was not happy. He was pissed.
Author's Notes: Well, this is more like an altered version of the ending of Mission 2 of the Vergil's Downfall DLC. That is where DmC Vergil tried to save 'Kat' but the latter is more like an illusion. The demonic illusion of Kat tells him that he's weak and prefers Dante over him. That made Vergil angry and killed the illusion. Then his eyes turned into red, signifying that he unlocked his Demon Mode. But I changed that more in a good way, especially unlocking Vergil's Demon Mode. More importantly. it's like I turned this into a boss fight!
And there is some points and opinions from others which I turned them into ideas for this fic. I wanna credit those guys. So maybe the next chapter or two that I will explain those points. And speaking of next chapter, I will also use some parts from The Chronicles of Vergil comic (if you guys read it.)
