Author's Notes: Well, here we go with this new chapter! So enjoy.
I don't own Fairy Tail or DmC: Devil May Cry. They belong to their respective owners.
Kagura slowly opened her eyes as she wakes up. She got up and when she looked around, she looked down on the bandaged wound, which it was a blue handkerchief. Last thing she remembered is she passed out after the battle.
"Glad that you're awake."
The female mage heard someone and when she turned, it was Vergil who called her. Leaning on a wall, he opened his eyes. He keeps his face a solemn look.
"You passed out a while ago." Vergil told her.
"I see." Kagura replied.
Vergil leaned back and sighed. "Maybe it's time to tell you. I'll honor my word."
Hearing this, Kagura knew that this man will tell about his story. About the human named Kat.
"You may now begin. I'm all ears." said Kagura
And now, Vergil began his story….
"Kat. She's a normal human girl. But she had an extraordinary talent. She is a psychic."
"A psychic? You mean she can do telepathy?" Kagura inquired.
"She's more than that. Through her powers, she can travel from the human world to the spirit world." Vergil added.
"Anyway," Kagura wanted to ask a question. "How did you two met?"
"Well, it's something like this…"
In the human world…
A crowd is gathering inside a large courtyard in the outskirts of Limbo City. All people, young and old, line up to get free samples of the most popular soda drink, Virility. Everyone loves to drink that kind of soda.
As Vergil, with his mask put on, looked down from a top of a building, he sees about what is going on. As far as he knows, the people who are distributing these free Virility samples are not actually people. They are demons who ruled and oppressed humanity by bringing them ignorance and delusion. Even using a soda drink to entice and control them…
"Have mercy on these poor people." He lamented.
He continued to look down. To observe. Patience is a virtue so in order to reach out to 'her'; he needs to tread carefully and to make sure that the plan is executed very well.
"Virility Soda! Virilty Soda! Get your free samples!" A man who is promoting the soda drink called out.
The man continued on. "The great president of Silver Sacks, Kyle Rider, has a free gift for everyone here! The new Virility recipe is twice the sweetness – but it still charges you up with enough vitality for a whole day! And we're giving it away FREE! SO DON'T MISS IT!"
Kagura interrupted. "What's Virility?"
"It's a soda drink in my world. For us Nephilim, it's harmless. But for humans, it's more like 'lobotomy in a can'. In other words, it's poison."
"Disgusting…" Kagura commented.
"It is… but on the inside." Said Vergil. Kagura raised an eyebrow on what she has heard. The he continued. "It really tastes good for a soda drink, but it really destroys the body and even the brain. It was another ploy for the demons to enslave mankind."
Kagura nodded in response as she understood everything the Nephilim said. Vergil then decided to continue.
"Well, back on topic…"
The human world
Two hooded people are lining up to the soda truck for free Virility samples; one man and one young woman. The said man wears a brown hoodie while the young woman wears a blue one with an orange body and a short brown hair. The girl had a pale complexion and grey-green eyes. She has three necklaces, the longest having a silver pendant, and wears denim short-shorts, along with thick, knee-high socks and brown boots. She has several mystic-designed tattoos on her arms and forehead. That woman is known as Kat.
Vergil kept his eyes on the girl while standing on top of a building.
"This girl… I need her…"
Meanwhile, Kat turned to her companion. "This is crazy, Kylian… why do you want this stuff so badly?"
"I know it's free, Kat. But it's in short supply right now; we can make a killing if we score some extra shots." Kylian replied.
"Well, I guess so…" Kat agreed.
Then Kylian beamed, "Well, what are you waiting for? Just go there and get some for me"
Kat is a bit hesitant to move, but Kylian pushed her.
"… and try to smile like you mean it!"
Now, Kat made a small smile as she went through. Until she finally went in front of the soda truck…
"I'd like two cans—"she ordered.
"…Sorry, Miss. The limit's one per person. Everyone should have the chance to try it, right?"
Kat tried to sway the crewman as she is reaching the can, "Aww, you sure I can't persuade you to give me one mo—
All of sudden and in a flash, Kat widened her eyes for what she saw. The crew turned into nothing but a grotesque figure with red eyes, long arms, and feral skin along with sharp claws and teeth.
"H-Hey! My god… what ARE you?"
Vergil sensed something. 'I sensed a demon nearby.' Then he saw that something bad happened to the girl; she screamed in horror
"AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!"
'She's in trouble. I'd best hurry!'
He quickly throws a Summoned Sword directly into the truck…
Kylian blurted "You okay, Kat? What's wrong?!"
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!
The soda truck exploded and bursts into flame. The terrified crowd ran away, fearing for their lives while few were down on the ground, due to the shockwave of the blast. Kat is one of them, yet she is alive in one piece as she recovers
"Unnhhhh… someone… someone bombed the soda truck?" she groaned.
As she looked up into her surroundings, she saw nothing but destruction. Cars were destroyed, bits of debris were all over the place, and flames are surrounding the whole area. She keeps on looking until she saw a man, a masked man, fighting someone while wielding a mysterious sword.
She called out. "What the hell is happening!?"
The masked man answered while killing someone with just a swipe of his sword, which it was none other than a demon. "Don't move… the police will take care of you."
Then Kat realized something. "Hey… I know that guy!" So she answered, "Y-You in the mask! You're that terrorist… who killed innocent people!"
Instead, he huffed in response beneath his mask. "Innocent people! Kat, why do you doubt your own eyes?"
"POLICE!" A squad of policemen with armor and protective gear rushed into the scene.
Before the policemen went to the perimeter, Kat wondered why this masked man knows her name.
"Wait! How do you know my name?"
The masked man answered, "I've been looking for you… for a very long time. Your dreams… helped me find you."
The masked man turned into Kat before he will take his leave. "Be patient. We'll meet again. Very soon."
Then the masked man made his escape and disappeared from view.
"So you're hiding yourself in a mask…"
"That's correct." Vergil confirmed. "During those days, I lead a secret organization called 'The Order'. Its purpose is to save humanity from the rule of the demons under the demon king, Mundus."
"I see…" Kagura nodded. "So you are more like a revolutionary…" But what really startled Kagura is that how a powerful demon successfully controlled the world. She wants to know but that will be later. She will let Vergil do the talking instead.
"Indeed. But to be honest, I'm the one who is fighting the demons. I'm just guiding humans to help them open themselves to the truth. When I first get my sword…" he points on his Yamato. "It changed everything around me. But fighting alone is not enough; I need help."
"So you need Kat?" she inquired.
"Precisely. That is because not only she would join The Order, but in order to find my lost brother." Vergil replied. "And my journey has started… three days after the soda truck attack…"
"Kat, listen to me, I can help you…"
In a different dimension, which she was not sure if it was a dream or not, Kat is more or less, terrified; terrified that she saw a monstrous creature with her own eyes. She tried to ward off thinking that it was all a dream but in the current situation she was in, fear has taken her over. since she had no idea if this was real or not.
"Ha ha ha ha! Oh, I've missed your naivety! I assure you, I'm very real. And you… you're MINE, now and forever. Better believe it!" the trembling beast sneered, which it has four arms and pointed ears.
Vergil continued to speak telepathically. "This demon… he is going to kill you! I can help you, but only if I you let me enter in your dream…"
The demon continued his terror, now a few inches from Kat, showing his intimidating, monstrous face and holds a big sword. "And if anyone else will join in… help celebrate our reunion? Well, I don't mind sharing my playthings!"
Vergil called out again in a hurry. "Call to me, let me in. Concentrate on my voice, Kat!"
Kat has no choice. Her life is in grave danger. Then she answered, "Oh god…! Okay… COME IN!"
Suddenly, a flash of light appears above, and came out from it is the masked man with a katana. As he is falling from the air, he executes a downward slash, successfully killing the demon. The masked man sheathed his sword back; he turned onto Kat, whose body is in her bluish glow.
Central Prison, The Human World…
He put his hand onto her left shoulder and said, "It's over. You can wake up now."
"Focus on my voice. Breathe. Calm yourself…."
The masked man kept on holding Kat, which she was in an unknown state where her eyes are shut. They were inside a prison, with a security camera watching over them.
"He's dead, Kat… that bastard demon will never haunt you again. And whatever you think of me… trust me—I'm not your enemy."
The masked man raised his voice, calling the girl one more time. "Come on. WAKE UP!"
Suddenly, a somewhat ghostly occurrence appeared and went into Kat's body as if it was a soul returning to its own body.
Sighing in relief, he complemented. "There. Much better, right?"
Then he began to explain while comforting her. "That wasn't just a nightmare, Kat. Your astral form was a prisoner in the demon world. You're waking, but you need time in order for your spirit to re-synchronize with your body… you'll start feeling better in just a few minutes. I'll be right here.
"And after a few minutes, we began our first conversation. She asks a lot of questions and I answered all of them." Vergil continued.
"So that means that I'll hear something from you… about everything I need to know…?" Kagura tried to guess.
"Well, I know what you mean. And you're right…"
"Go ahead…"
"Alright..." Vergil nodded. "After a few minutes back then, Kat finally woke up. And it started our first conversation…"
"So you're up and about, but how do you feel?" The masked man then continued while leaning on the wall crossing his arms, "You know, leaving your body sucks – or so I hear – but you should get used to the sensation in time."
Now it's Kat turn to talk. "I still feel like crap, thanks for asking. Did you pull me out of my nightmare to make my migraine worse or to break me out of jail? Now the cops are fingering me as your accomplice in the truck bombing – and I'm not gonna rot here on your behalf!"
"But they've gotten all wrong, haven't they…?" the masked man retorted. "You weren't my accomplice then… but I do still need you. You're a psychic, Kat. Your powers… they'd be very useful to me - and to my cause.
"I lead an organization called The Order. Our mission… is to open people's eyes… to make them see the true face of those who rule us."
Then Kat snarked, "Oh, wow. This just getting better and better!" For she thought that what this masked man said to her was ridiculous. "Thanks but no thanks to the job offer. I'm no superhero! I'm not even a wannabe terrorist either; I'm just a nobody - with too many nightmares." She replied in refusal.
"Do you think it's just a dream?" the masked man inquired.
"No, I know it was." Kat admitted. "Ever since I was little, I escaped from this… rotten world into dreams. Sometimes you get a nightmare instead. That monster… he was just a… leftover of the creeps who used to hit me in foster care."
"That demon was as real as the dimension you 'dreamed' yourself into. You've probably been making trips to the astral plane for years, without even knowing it." said the masked man.
"…So say I have, what does that make you? The head of the Parallel Dimension Tourism Board?" she sarcastically asked.
The masked man took off his mask as he reveals his face to the young girl. Silver eyes and silver-colored hair that was properly combed.
"My name is Vergil. I am a son of a demon." The man known as Vergil, have introduced himself.
Upon hearing this, Kat grabbed the color of Vergil's coat and pleaded, "Crap! Stop lying to me, you psycho! If you've got super-powers, then get me the hell out of here! Pull me out the same way you came in!"
"That's impossible." Vergil interjected. "The only creatures that can move through Limbo corporeally… with their bodies – are demons."
"Huh?"
"You, as a human psychic, can travel there in spirit – but your mortal coil will always be tethered to this world, you're world." Vergil finished.
Kat was a bit dumbfounded when she heard the word 'Limbo'. What does it mean?
"Limbo? What are you babbling about now?"
"So this Limbo… is another dimension created by the demons to enslave humanity…" Kagura noted. They walked inside the ruined chapel, a few meters from the altar
"Correct." Vergil responded. "In my world, Limbo is much like this hell, but it was inside the human world. It's more like the demon homeworld."
"Every element in one man's daily life – from the Virility Soda, from their own television and other kinds of media, to the authorities from the law enforcement groups to the government officials; they are all a part of the demon's global strategy… to keep them pliant."
"And their leader is…?"
"Mundus." Vergil filled out for the curious mage. "He is a powerful Demon King, one of the kings of the Underworld. But he has another identity: Kyle Rider. He is the president of the multimillionaire corporate group, Silver Sacks."
Kagura sat one of the church benches as Vergil continues his story; he leaned on one of the benches. "The demons need energy to increase their powers – Mundus' job is to mine the humans' energy; to sap it from human slaves. They've drained all of humankind's vitality before long."
He continued, "My world and Limbo are on different planes, but these two dimensions can collide – and these collisions can create rifts; portals which allow to travel between the two universes. Actually, I'm able to create rifts."
When Vergil concluded, Kagura used this chance to ask. "Aside from Limbo, can you travel to other worlds as well? Even to my own world?"
When Vergil heard it, he gave an immediate answer. "I have no idea…" Kagura replied, "I see…"
"But… it can be possible." Kagura turned on the Nephilim.
"How?"
"The Nephilim wields both the power of angels and demons. And they can travel to different worlds. I am one of them." Kagura nodded in response, confirming that her companion was a Nephilim.
"I can create rifts as long as I want to, but there is one thing that I can't do."
"?" Kagura tried to took notice.
"To find those that already exist."
Kagura put the pieces together. "So you need Kat to guide you through Limbo?"
"Exactly." Vergil replied with a grin, knowing that this female mage is not only strong but she is also intelligent.
"How about this Mundus guy; what happened to him?"
"He was dead. And I am not alone. Me and my brother defeated him."
"So you both took down Mundus?" she asked another question.
"Yes." Vergil answered. Then he added, "But it will be a very long story. Better to save it for later."
"Well, fine by me." Kagura decided to get over with it.
"Now where are we…"
"You're good at saying this is a mental asylum, and you're my shrink. Bang up job on your way of curing me, by the way." Kat commented.
"In the end it doesn't matter what you think." Vergil said as he puts on his mask as he begins to tell his plan. "In the end, it doesn't matter what you think. In a few seconds, the demons will catch me on the cameras and decide that you really are my accomplice.
"I have to pass through Limbo to get out of here – you're coming with me in your astral form, so you can find me a rift." he concluded.
"Oh, right. Cool." Kat commented. "And I just leave my body to rot here?" she asked.
"No," the masked Nephilim shook his head. "You need to return to it as quickly as possible. I want you conscious when they transfer you to Hellfire."
"Hellfire?" Kagura repeated.
"Yes, Hellfire. In my world, it's a prison where the demons torture human conspirators. If you went there, it is really hell."
Kagura was a bit fazed yet she still listens.
"That is because no one has ever escaped back then. My brother Dante was locked in there."
"So you tried to find and save your brother by getting him out of that prison?" Kagura inquired.
"Actually, we both tried back then. But we found him later on. But there is much to tell, though…"
He sighed and got up from the church bench. "For years, I looked in vain for a way to enter Hellfire through the human world, tried to find Dante's whereabouts. But I found out that the only chance I got there is the same way I got on the prison where Kat was incarcerated. All she needs is to tap her abilities, in order for the both of us to locate an accessible rift.
"She tried to argue with me, but I interjected, told her that my brother is the key to save our world, not just me. I told her to follow me, in order to live."
"Wow, you had a hard conversation back then…" Kagura noted.
"You can say that…"
"But – this is CRAZY!" Kat yelled as she pointed back on Vergil in disdain. "I don't care about this end of the world crap! And I don't give a damn about your brother and your so-called… demon buddies! I don't want to be part of this!
"Do me a favor and find yourself another psychic!"
An infuriated Kat didn't stop there; she banged the door, tried to call out the guards. "Guards! Guards! There's an insane terrorist in my cell! Help me!"
But Vergil just ignored Kat's attempts of getting rid of him. He prepares for something or someone who will arrive at the moment as he keeps on holding his unsheathed Yamato.
"They're coming… sounds like you've gotten them all riled up." Vergil calmly noted. Then he turned to Kat and said, "Stay calm. Anger troubles the spirit… and that'll affect your journey through Limbo."
As Kat tried to respond, the door was busted open as several guards have entered. Kat stumbled on the floor.
"But I don't have any idea how to reach your damned dimension!" Kat turned to Vergil.
"No, but I do!" With quickness, Vergil made a diagonal slash and a flash of bluish aura appeared and it swirled around them.
"Let yourself go. Limbo will naturally absorb your spirit." Vergil ordered.
But Kat goes with an unsure answer. "But… this is crazy, I—"
"See the world for what truly is!"
And moments later, the landscape had changed. From inside the cell in the human world comes with an eerie, twisted one; where it has floating rocks and debris; even parts of destroyed buildings. Located under is a mysterious yet eerie lake. Vergil retained his full form. And Kat? She entered in her astral form.
The policemen have showed their true form: they were creepy and malevolent demons known as Stygians. And out of the seven, one was killed due to Vergil's attack. As he continued to fend off the demons, he turned to Kat and said, "Do you believe me now?"
Kat is loss for words. Yes, she faced demons in her dreams but right now, she saw it with her two eyes. This is reality. They actually exist. And they are fighting Vergil.
She saw one demon goes for the attack from the right side…
"Look out!"
Vergil turned and he took the hit. But fortunately, it was his mask and it was cut in half. Vergil responded by blocking it.
He turned his eyes on Kat. "Hurry! You've got to find me an exit rift before the Phlegethon catches wind of us! Kat, I know you can do it! Let your spirit guide you! It'll subconsciously search for a way back to your world!"
After hearing this, Kat immediately flew away from the scene in her astral form. When she is far away, Vergil smirked as he can focus on killing these demons.
"Alright! Now we can get down to business."
Then he unleashed his Spiral Swords as it blasted the demons away; then he throws the swords to their designated targets and he continued to slash the remaining demons one by one. He slashed the remaining demon and sheathes back his sword. He sighs in relief until a rumbling sound occurred. As Vergil looked down and words formed on his lips…
"The Phlegethon!"
WOOOOOOOSH!
"Damn! I wasn't quick enough…" he cursed himself.
And out of the water appears a huge sea monster, the Phlegethon. The said sea monster opened up its jaws as it prepares to eat its prey. But Vergil himself was unfazed as he prepares to fight the wormlike beast.
"Bring it on, you ugly worm!"
But suddenly, a swirling vortex appeared and Kat called him out, "Vergil, over here! Hurry!"
"It's about time! Vergil exclaimed."
"And then I jumped over the rift. Luckily, I escaped from the Phlegethon. I landed into the basement of the prison…"
"And… what happened to Kat?" Kagura asked.
"She was captured and was taken to Hellfire." Vergil replied. "I got out of Limbo but I was in the basement of the prison itself. As I began to communicate with her…"
Vergil coughed as he emerged from the water. As he recovered, he realized that he was in sewers, down in the prison.
"I know you can hear me, Kat." said Vergil as he regains his composure by breathing. "You did it! That rift you have found… it brought me out of Limbo and I'm now right here in the prison's basement." He commended.
Now Vergil continued as he tries to tell Kat on their next step. "I've got to give you instructions before they take you into Hellfire. They're going to hurt you. They'll try to break you, physically and mentally. They have no limits and they will show you no mercy. If you try to endure the pain while awake, your spirit may never recover.
"You should disconnect yourself from your body… and return to Limbo. Follow the sound of my voice. There is nothing else you can do for now.
"JOIN ME!"
"And then both of us headed back to Limbo." said Vergil. "And we went into the Lost City, which is a part of Limbo. And then Kat startled in awe when she saw the whole place."
"What do you mean?" Kagura inquired.
Vergil turned to Kagura. "I want to ask you something: what do you think about this place?"
"Hmm…" Kagura tried to think of a good answer. "This place is weird, eerie, and even chaotic in a sense."
"You're right." Vergil complemented. "As opposed to this world and even Limbo itself, the Lost City was…"
"Peaceful? This place, the Lost City… it's a remote area of Limbo – the first I managed to cleanse." Vergil told the young psychic, still in her astral form.
"So you like to clean up dimensions in your spare time… why don't you do the rest of it? Why fight for the humans? Kat continually asked. "If you are really the son of demon, aren't you fighting your own kind?"
"Once you've seen the truth of the world, Kat, you can never go back." Vergil answered. "I won't let people live under an illusion of freedom any longer… not when, in reality, they're slaves.
"It's my responsibility to liberate then – my destiny…"
"But it isn't mine!" Kat interjected. "You dragged me into this against my own will… so tell me, Mr. Destiny, what's going to happen to my body? What's gonna happen to me in Hellfire?
An answer formed in Vergil's lips, in a melancholic manner. "You're going to suffer."
"Well, that's just great." Kat sarcastically remarked. "Maybe I should stay here… Or take a holiday…"
"No. No psychic can survive more than a few minutes separated from their body." Vergil explained. "First you'd lose consciousness… then your astral form would disappear.
Kat was loss for words when she heard it. "…Damn. So can't you just kill Mundus with your powers? Why's this Dante so important anyway?"
Vergil went silent upon remembering this. His brother.
"What's wrong?" Kagura inquired.
"Maybe I'll skip that part. I'll tell you about my brother… later. But I need to tell you: without my brother, the human race is doomed."
Kagura pouted a bit she wants to know more about Dante. Then she sighed. "Alright… so what happened next?"
"Kat was taken to Hellfire. And deep down, she encountered a powerful demon. She cried for help, but I told her to never leave yet. It was too soon, yet her life is in danger…"
Kagura wants to ask more questions yet after everything she has heard, she didn't even know what to say. But this is not the whole story, so for her, patience is a virtue. "I know we're not done yet, right?"
Vergil looked back and said, "Not yet. It's just a half of the story."
And he opened the double doors of the ruined church as they went outside….
Author's Notes: End of chapter 13
As I stated in the my previous chapter, here is some points that I want to explain:
-What I like about DmC Vergil is that he's more of a tragic hero. I have a discussion with one of my friends about this, which I agree: if you guys read The Chronicles of Vergil comic, he's on the good side wholeheartedly. What we're seeing in DmC is how screwed up his last move in the comic made him. Vergil's Downfall (Spoilers) is showing you the complete obliteration of a hero. The end of Vergil's Downfall would be the second time Vergil has fallen to his own powers.
This is just the half of the details. Furthermore, I will complete my explanation of those points when I will make the next chapter which the flashbacks will be based from the 2nd chapter of The Chronicles of Vergil comic.
Read and review and let's meet up again for the next chapter!
