Author's Notes: Well, I am back again with this new chapter. This is one of the hardest chapters I ever wrote because aside from time constraints and writer's block, I also suffer from USB issues. Yes, my flash drive is broken; most of my files are corrupted but since I recovered most of my files that I transferred them to my SD memory card in my cellphone. And gladly, it worked so I continue on this. Still saving my money to buy a new flash drive.

And yes, this is the second half of the flashback part, which I use 'The Chronicles of Vergil' as basis. Anyways, this is chapter 14!

I don't own Fairy Tail and DmC: Devil May Cry.

They are now outside of the ruined cathedral. Vergil continued his story as they were walking.

"You know, Vergil… sometimes you can't blame her. She wants to get out because she is going to-

"Die?" Vergil finished it off. "You could say that, but you're right. Yes, she's just a young psychic who can't even defend herself while I am doing all the fighting with my sword. I tried to make things work. But in the end, if things didn't go the way I wanted, I am forced to choose another option. When Kat did that, I think there is nothing I can do either…"

"And then, what happened after that?" Kagura asked.

"Well, it's time to fill up the holes." Vergil said as he looked up in the crimson sky. "I have no choice but to move forward as I enter into the lion's den. The entrance of the prison…"

"Kat… I told you that you go back to Limbo if you found Dante! These cretins will sniff me as soon as I set foot in that damn prison!"

"Well, I'm sorry." Kat blurted out. "Vergil…. I'm just too weak. I had to escape the pain."

"It doesn't matter now." Vergil just shrugged about it yet a bit frustrated. "You haven't left me much choice."

He continued to jump on every platform just to reach the entrance. "Hmmm, it's just as I thought! These demons are so sure of their grip on power, they left an entrance unguarded. If my theory is correct that even Hellfire is like an impenetrable stronghold…"

"Then an access rift can easily get us inside!" He concluded as he landed on the ground where Kat's astral form is located.

"Alright, you can go back now." Vergil ordered as Kat's astral form disappeared in Limbo.

"I continued my search while Kat returned to the real world. That is where she found her friends, who were also imprisoned in Hellfire. And moments later, I felt that she and her friends were attack by demons. It's a slaughter. Until I found a rift, I stepped out and saved Kat…

"Demon Elite? Ha!" Vergil snarked. "Hi, Kat. Pleased to see me?" he greeted.

"Who the hell do you think you are, human!?" the demon spat in anger.

But Vergil did not stop there; he performed his Rapid Slash attack as he took down a number of demons. Then he reached Kat and asked, "So where's Dante?"

"I have no idea! The prisoners—they said that he's not here anymore." she answered.

Vergil was surprised. "But—that's impossible! Nobody has ever escaped from Hellfire alone! The Onyx alone—"

BOOOM BOOOM BOOM BOOM

The two heard the trembling sounds of footsteps. More like footsteps that belong to giants. Vergil gritted his teeth as a reaction.

"Damn. I just had to bring them up…."

Four of those terrifying creatures appeared in front of them. They have longer arms and hands with sharp claws. Their bodies were made of metal with spikes on their shoulders and their heads and faces that resemble much of an iron maiden. Vergil's fears have come to fruition: the Onxy have arrived.

"DAAAAAAAAAAANTEEEEEEEEEEEE" one of them growled.

"Foolish girl!" Vergil yelled at the girl with frustration! "Look at what you've done on calling me back so soon. And since the Onyx is here, that means we are lost!"

Kat was fazed on Vergil's outburst. But she tried to reply, "W-why are you being like this!? This isn't like you… you're the 'masked man' that knows all the answers!"

Kat tried to calm down a bit. "I mean, look—if you can deal with them, I could help the prisoners escape…?"

"And take them to where, exactly?" Vergil shot back. "No one and I mean NO ONE ever stood toe-to-toe against the Onyx—these demons makes this prison like an impenetrable stronghold! Did you really think that I will burst in and get Dante out of this hellhole through the front door?! Limbo is our only exit—the same way I came in!"

Kat tried to reason out. "But… if that is true… you would've known all along that I'd have to leave my body… that I'd die here!"

"To be honest, she had a point. I even forgot that even though she's a psychic, she doesn't even have the ability to defend herself." Vergil made a solemn expression. "I should've known about that earlier."

"You should've known that humans have their own abilities. But they also have their own limits…" Kagura noted.

"But she's not like you, Kagura." Vergil turned to the purple haired mage. "You come from another world. You're a swordswoman. A warrior, a capable fighter; a mage. Just different from my world."

Kagura made a stern look. "Compare me all you want. But she has a lot of heart than me."

Hearing that word, Vergil stopped. "Maybe…" he muttered. "I still didn't even know who you really are… and so am I."

Then Vergil continued on…

"Now, do you trust me Kat? Here it goes!"

After this, Vergil plunges his Yamato into the ground. As the bluish aura continues to engulf him, something is coming out of the Nephilim. It's more like a copy of him yet more of a living shadow. He summoned his Doppelganger.

"Now, Kat! Get away!"

"I began to attack the Onyx but I was caught. I was thrown down on the ground… and then in crumbled. I landed into a deep cavern. Luckily, Kat came to me and helped me got up…

"Vergil… you need to get up. Grab your sword and get moving. The Onyx are approaching!" Kat warned.

As he regained consciousness, Vergil tried to get up. "Uhnh… how can you move... in that form… outside of Limbo?"

"It's this prison." She answered. "I think it acts as a giant rift between the two universes. I figured that, if the demons could hold onto their true forms in my world… I might be able to move around in my astral form—here!"

Vergil huffed as he wiped out blood in his face. "What an idiot. You should have a run for it whn you have the chance!"

"I may be an idiot…" Kat countered. "But you faced the Onyx to protect me—even though you didn't have a chance. And from now on, we are a team. So come on… I have an idea of how to find Dante!"

Hearing Kat's plan, Vergil ignored her excuse for her recklessness and decided to let it slide.

"Show me." He calmly replied.

"And with one dimensional slash of my Yamato, both of us went into another location of Hellfire." said Vergil. "We arrived at the control room of Hellfire. To be honest, that is such a weird place."

"How weird is it?" Kagura inquired.

As Vergil sheathed back his Yamato, he wondered what this place is. The ground he stood resembles more of a brain; a brain of a human.

Kat tried to get up despite of her injuries to answer Vergil's question, "We're on the Limbo side of the prison control room… the brains of Hellfire. I figured we might be able to find some information on Dante here…

"This is no ordinary place, Vergil…" she turned on the Nephilim. "Hellfire is more than just a prison; it's a giant, living organism! We've got to be careful… here, we are more like an infection—and the demons are the antibodies!"

Kat fell down since her strength is wavering and Vergil caught her. "Okay, okay, so you swallowed an infodump—but you have to get back to your body. You've been outside for too long."

Then Kat seemingly passed out.

"Kat… huh!? Hey, Kat! What are you doing!?"

She coughed out. "Ha, look at you, worrying about me." she scoffed. "Relax. I'm… just trying to connect to the brain… I'm going to find your brother!"

"She did that?"

"Indeed." Vergil nodded, affirming Kagura's guess. "The brains of Hellfire are more like a large storage of data and all kinds of information. Through her astral form, she can access everything that Hellfire sees… or has seen. And she did."

"I see." said Kagura.

"Afterwards, she finally saw Dante as she pointed on the images shown. But those images were a month old."

"You said that your brother escaped from that prison…?" Kagura tried to confirm.

Vergil nodded in response. "Yes, but what really surprised me is how he escaped. He is killing every demon that comes to him. And with his rage, he slaughtered them. He finally got his power as I saw his sword, Rebellion… and his Devil Trigger."

"Kagura pondered in thought. "You two brothers have swords. And the thing that you called Devil Trigger…"

"Well, long story short, as they say." Vergil now explains in a simple form. "I have the Yamato and my brother has Rebellion. They're more than just swords; they are mementos of our father Sparda. And about the Devil Trigger, it's more like a manifestation of our powers, using it to defeat every foe that comes to us. But it has a cost."

"A cost?" Kagura's eyes slightly widened upon hearing that from Vergil. "What do you mean…?"

"We will get through there. May I continue on?"

"Alright…" Kagura calmly replied.

"AAAAAAAHHHHHH!" Kat clenched her head in pain as something have entered her…

"Rebellion? Devil Trigger? Then Dante really IS the son of Sparda?"

"Oh no…" Kat trembled as she endured the pain as she felt it. "A presence… something is taking over my mind!"

Vergil turned around and his jaw opened in a surprised look. He saw something appeared: a head of a demonic figure which it has a hideous, sinister face.

And it spoke, "Hellfire thanks you for your assistance, humans! Mundus will be pleased to see the face of the traitor's son, at last!"

Vergil turned to the girl. "C'mon, Kat! Your spirit is too vulnerable here. Get out of Limbo!"

"Ahhhhhhh!" Kat tried to resist the evil spirit. "No, he's holding me here. Go! I'll keep him occupied!"

"Not without you!" Vergil argued. "You said we're a team, right? I… I need you and your powers, and…"

Kat cupped his cheek and said to him, "Oh please, stop that." Playing the sentimental card won't work with me." And a smile formed on her lips. "But—I like seeing you so… human at last."

"And… we kissed." Vergil said. But that really made him… uncomfortable a bit.

"Hmmm… that says something." Kagura swooned.

"W-what do you mean by that anyway?" Vergil stuttered.

"Isn't it obvious? You have feelings for her. Or maybe… you're in love." Kagura giggled.

He can't help but to chuckle then he sighed. "Well, I have to admit: I have feelings for her." And then he smiled, feeling content on his answer.

"And…?"

"You know, when I had that kiss from Kat… that is the first time… that I actually cared for someone. Yes, I am not human. And that is true. But what really make one human are… his or her emotions, whether good or bad. But when I met you…" then Vergil turned to Kagura. "Something had changed inside me. And… it seems I need to find myself again. Now, with you on my side."

"Vergil… w-what are you saying?"

"Oh wow," Vergil chuckled and rolled his eyes in embarrassment. "Maybe I went overboard…" With this, Kagura formed a smile on her lips. "But we're not finished yet…"

"I know. Just go on."

"Alright…" Vergil continued on.

Hellfire Control Center, the Human World

As they embrace each other, Vergil and Kat returned to the human world. Even Vergil made a sigh of relief since both of them made it safely.

"Kat… you're back in your body! Your soul is safe…" Vergil commented. "Now you must go!"

Before she went on her way, Kat felt a sensation: it was painful and it was in her head. She rolled her eyes in pain and blood comes out of her left eye and her mouth.

"Arghhhhh! Vergil!" she screamed in pain. "No, he's still in my head! He's sending the Onyx to tear us apart!"

As she passed out, Vergil is loss for words. "Kat… no…!"

He thought it was over, but it was not. So he doesn't have a choice but the face the terrifying Onyx or they will be lost. For Vergil, there is no turning back now. Feeling the burning anger inside him, he turned into the approaching harbingers as his facial features have changed.

Holding his sword, Vergil walked into the Onxy as a bluish aura manifested within him. He unleashed his power with a burst and not only his eyes turned white and they radiated but his white hair swept back and his skin turned pale.

"DEVIL TRIGGER!" Vergil began to attack and he successfully defeated the Onyx horde. One by one, he took them down and disappeared from oblivion. As he deactivates his Devil Trigger state, Vergil rushed forward to Kat, with the latter recovered.

"Kat! You're hurt!?"

"I'm okay… I can walk…" she said.

Vergil brought up the girl to help her stand up. They both turned on the Onyx which it lays down. But suddenly, its casket-like chest opened and appears a whitish yet malevolent spirit and moments later, all of the other whitish spirits flew into the Onyx's open chest.

"The spirits of the Onyx… they're fleeing?" Vergil wondered.

"No… they're merging!" Kat remarked as she sensed the imminent danger.

Both of them can't even believe on what they saw with their two eyes. The spirits of the Onyx merged into one huge yet terrifying demon! And it roared viciously as it unleashed its terror.

Vergil commented. "Look! That must be the Onyx's true form!"

"Then we began to run for our lives as we made our escape." Vergil recalled. "That Onyx is so powerful that we have no choice, or so I thought. But the important thing is that I know that my brother has escaped.

"And after we made it, I have discovered a horrible truth. It really troubles me... a lot."

"You know… I'm a bit worried when you say that." Kagura remarked.

"Well then, try me." Vergil replied.

The giant demon keeps on following the two as it keeps on climbing up, like a beast eyeing for his prey; Vergil and Kat are on the run until they reached on top.

"What the hell is this thing? I have never seen anything like it, even in Limbo!"

"It's the body of Hellfire." Kat started to explain. "The prison itself is a demon! That's why we were bleeding between two dimensions…! We've got to stop it from reaching the surface!"

Readying his Yamato, Vergil turned to Kat told her, "Go. Find some cover. I've got the Devil Trigger, and the skill to use it."

But Kat didn't stop as she held on him for a halt. "No…! The last time you used it, I knew there was something off about you. It changed you. You're being transformed by the demonic energy you're channeling, little by little; the next time you use it…"

"I could lose my humanity… for good." Vergil replied in a sad tone.

Kagura widened her eyes in disbelief. She felt the sadness in her heart when she finally heard about it. Sure she knows that having power is great, but it had a cost. She finally saw that through Vergil.

"So that's why…" Kagura tried to put up her own words. "You don't want to go near me back then…?"

Vergil sighed. "Like I said back then, I can hurt you. I used my Devil Trigger many times when I defeat my enemies; I even use that to cleanse a part of Limbo. But I never realized… that I can be a completely different person. A monster; or worse." Vergil said with remorse.

"That's why I'm afraid when tried to approach me when we faced that demon masquerading as Kat. What if I lose control… just like back then…?" Vergil faced Kagura with sadness in his eyes.

Kagura walked into Vergil and cupped his cheek with her hand. "I know what you feel…" said Kagura. "I even have power, but I'm just using it for the sake of revenge. But I realized… that it won't do anything good for me. And that is why I changed for the better."

Kagura continued. "I know you can do that. You can use me as a pawn or anything. But I believe… that you have such a good heart, deep inside."

"You still… believe in me…" Vergil is loss for words about Kagura's declaration. Yes, he knew that humans are frail, but he never realized that there are humans like Kat. And that is what his brother meant.

"Oh, by the way. We're not done yet, right?" Kagura shifted about Vergil's backstory.

"Uhh, yeah." Vergil chuckled in embarrassment. "Ok, it seems I'm gonna finish it…" "Well, thank you… Kagura…"

"I might have an idea, though…" Kat started to explain her plan to defeat the Hellfire demon. "My astral flow… it's naturally attracted to the rifts of Limbo. And your sword—it allows you to create portals.

"If we combine our two powers, form a rift at Hellfire's heart—it could create a dimensional vortex! A black hole; we need to create a rift in order to swallow the whole of its body!"

"Did the plan actually work?" the Mermaid Heel mage asked.

"In actuality, yes." Vergil answered. "Since my Yamato have the power to create rifts, she merged her astral powers into my sword. And with one powerful plunge, we defeated the Hellfire by creating a vortex. And the demon sucked into it."

"So that means, the Hellfire went to a different dimension…?"

"To be precise, yes. We're not even sure where it went but… all that matters that we defeated it. At least we're safe." he answered.

"Hold it." Kagura wanted to add. "About your sword…"

"Oh. You mean Yamato?"

Kagura nodded to Vergil. Then the woman said, "You said that it has the power to create rifts, where we can travel to other dimensions. If that is the case, then it's possible for me to come back into my world using your own rift?"

Vergil had no idea what to tell her, but he answered anyway. "To be honest, I can do that. But… I'm not sure if I can do that using my own power."

"What do you mean?" Then Kagura remembered about Vergil stating that his brother will help her. But…

"That's why I can't even do it alone. I need help. And since my brother-"

At the time he mentioned his brother, Vergil stopped a bit. He never forgot the bad blood between them: Dante stabbed him in pure rage. But he decided to shrug it off because things are now different. Vergil can't tell but he felt… soft inside.

"What's wrong?" Kagura startled on Vergil.

"It's… nothing." Vergil answered. "I'll find a way no matter what." 'Even I'll go to my brother… but it will be a hard time for me…'

"I don't know… but someone told me… that we should never lose hope." Kagura replied in a soft tone. "And since we're both trapped here…"

"We're in this together." Vergil finished the statement.

"….You're right." Kagura felt relief in Vergil's answer. "Wait, what happens to you and Kat? I mean, after that incident."

"Alright," Vergil began to summarize the events after Hellfire. "We went to our hideout in order for Kat to recover from her injuries. And since the demons finally knew about my brother's identity, they're going to find him. But I'm using it to my advantage: letting them do the hard work and they'll lead me straight to my brother. But something troubles me…. and that is the words coming from Kat."

"And what is it…?"

"Oh no, Vergil… all those prisoners in Hellfire—dead… because of us!" said the young psychic.

"Dead?"

Vergil nodded. "Yes, Hellfire is a prison. And a demon. Yet those poor people who are trapped there… they are all dead. That is also my fault; we never even notice. I am sorry…"

Kagura could not believe it. Shaking her fist in disgust, she had the urge to punch Vergil in the face. He even allowed innocent people to be killed; how cruel it was! What happened to them is unforgivable! But she can't blame Vergil for that because the latter wants to find his brother in order to save the human race in their world; he never expected something like that will happen.

Kagura resigned in defeat with a sigh. "Go on…"

"Very well…" said Vergil.

"I'm begging you… let me help!" Kat pleaded. "Don't just… cast me aside. You're too recognizable on your own. Especially with that damned mask. You'll never be able to get near Dante without me."

Vergil understood Kat's resolve. But everything happened to him a few days ago is engrained in his mind, including the dangers of using his Devil Trigger too often. For him, this is too much. So in order to ease the burden and to continue on fighting…

"All that… may be true. But it's not as simple as that, Kat, and you know it. If you're with me, as long as you're by my side… our… feelings for each other can only be a weakness. If I'm forced to use the Devil Trigger to protect you again… the darkness in me… it will overwhelm me… and then overwhelm everything I feel for you. I can't take that risk…."

"So… you really love her…?" Kagura tried to guess.

Then Vergil answered, "You're right. I feel for her. If you ask me, there are times that one would cast his feelings aside for sake of a common goal. But I never realized… that it has consequences, as far as I'm concerned. So I have no choice… but to start over again."

"What do you mean by that?" Kagura was curious so she asked.

"I erased our memories. Not just the times that I use my Devil Trigger, but our feelings for each other. We need to forget them because those can be a hindrance to our goal."

"You did that… to save her and yourself?" Kagura asked while Vergil nodded.

"….You're a prick." She mumbled.

And then… she slapped him in the face. Vergil was surprised on the slap, but when he finally saw the look of Kagura's face, she was… infuriated.

"Why the hell do you do that!?" Kagura spat.

"Wait, I told you everything about Kat and this is all I got?! How could-"

Kagura cut him off by grabbing his collar and vents out her anger. "How could you be so SELFISH!?"

Vergil was dumbfounded on what Kagura said. "W-what?"

"You actually erased your memories…." Kagura tried to fight the tears as she was shaking. "But you're becoming a heartless, manipulative bastard! Yes, she was a human; you are both members of this so-called 'The Order' and you just want to throw her away like trash!? That's why your brother is angry about what you did!"

Vergil widened his eyes. He realized that his care and compassion for humans are lost. He had an obsession of overthrowing Mundus. Since the day that he erased their memories, they were just… members of The Order. That's it. Finding his brother not only signifies a reunion between them, but also another piece of the puzzle to fit it: he sees his brother as the key on defeating Mundus and ruling the humans with him. But, as they say, the rest is history: seeing Kat as only being 'useful', seeing humans are inferior and frail and they need protection from themselves, which Dante objectively disagrees. And they even clashed to the death.

"Yes, it's my fault." Vergil admitted. "All I care is that I would never make that mistake again. But I never thought that will come into this: manipulating and using people. It was replaced by another one: obsession."

Calming herself down as she is now ready to listen, Kagura lets go of her hold.

Then Vergil continued, "I cared for humans at first, but I actually screwed up."

"And how screwed are you?" the Mermaid Heel mage asked.

"To be honest, I was like I act all high and mighty and all that… when I finally found my brother Dante. But deep inside, I am rotten to the core."

He continued. "I left those people from The Order, to be killed. And even Kat. But Dante insisted that we need her. During those times, I see her as a tool. My brother, however, sees her as something even more. And that is… something that I totally forgot. Something that is missing in me."

"Now I understand." Kagura formed a smile on her lips. "You may be a Nephilim or whatever but you are capable of emotions: angry, sad, depressed, happy, joyful, compassion. That's what we call humanity."

Vergil was a bit surprised about her statement, but she had a point.

"Well, it makes sense for me now." said Vergil.

"Huh?"

"Do you remember the demon 'Kat' we faced earlier?"

Kagura nodded.

"I noticed something. She even told me that I never understand humanity. I guess it's my perception of humans and even rejecting own humanity. If I 'kill' that Kat, it means that I 'killed' a part of myself since I'm rejecting my humanity."

She tried to process the words yet Vergil continued.

"But you came into the scene. And since you revealed the 'truth', everything changed for me. That is where I started to defend you. And together, we defeated that demon. That means that I healed those 'wounds' in my heart… more like in a positive manner. I'm not rejecting my humanity; I just 'killed' the part of my own darkness."

Upon hearing this, Kagura finally understood what he said. Vergil will still fall into that darkness if he will 'kill' that demon on his own with his hatred. And since she went there, she is thankful that the man in front of her is on her side. Both have their own struggles, but they have something in common.

"And I am glad… that you find yourself."

Then the Nephilim said, "You're right." Now, he is feeling satisfied inside.

Then suddenly, the ground is shaking. The two of them felt it.

"Oh no!" Kagura reacted.

"Not this again!" Vergil did the same, gritting his teeth.

The ground crumbled where Kagura is standing. And she screamed as she falls down. Vergil immediately turned as he saw the woman falling.

"Kagura!" Vergil tried to catch her, but it was too late. Vergil also fell as they separated.

As she saw Vergil far away from her sight as he is falling down…

"VERGIIIIIIIILLLLL!" She screamed as tears are falling down from her eyes

They have gone to their own separate ways…. once again. Both are falling into an endless abyss.

End of chapter 14.

I dunno what to say but since I have other ideas in mind, as well as making new stories, I have no idea if I would put this on hold or whatever. But thanks to demonwithasoul's 'Bound by Fate', it keeps me to inspire and continue. I want to write other stories, but I will keep on continue this.

Read and review, guys! Thanks and see ya later!
