Hello, my lovely readers. It is coming to an end. You can begin the countdown to chapter 36. This chapter is more Klaus oriented due to it's a lead in to the sequel and it's moving us toward the final huge twist of the story. On with the show…
Chapter 30: His Night
Staring in the mirror, Klaus wondered what he was doing. Glaring at his reflection he had to steady his hand so that he did not break the mirror in front of him. Elena Gilbert was dead. Damon Gilbert was dead. There was no way that Klaus could possibly become a hybrid. And now Caroline was incessantly yammering on about babies. If he had to hear the word one more time he swore he would find one and force feed it to her.
Sucking in a deep breath, Klaus walked over to his bed and sat down. To be honest, Klaus had never thought about the idea of having a child. He always thought it was impossible. Now, his dream of making a race of hybrids was dead. How could he make Caroline's dream come true? He could not. She would leave him or at least try to like his family had. All because he could not give her a family.
Glaring in the mirror, Klaus silently cursed the fact that he had ever come to this stupid little town. He cursed every last person ending with the one he blamed for all of this. Damon bloody Salvatore. It was Damon's fault that Klaus could not lift the curse. If he had not changed the balance of things by being thrown out of his time and into another then things would be fine. They would be better than fine; they would be great.
What would Klaus have to do to restore the balance? That was his only question? He had been on the phone with so many witches and warlocks this week alone he was surprised he had not gone over his allotted minutes. And he so did hate talking to the people at the phone company. Compelling someone when your conversation was being recorded was not a good idea when you did not want to be exposed.
The witches had continually told him that there could be nothing done. That once the dopplegangers were dead that they were no longer of use to lift his curse. Klaus did not believe them. There must be some sort of spell. Or, if not, then Klaus could travel back ahead of Damon and stop the dooplegangers from dying. Yes, that was what he would do.
However, he was stuck going to this dreadful dance tonight. Gritting his teeth, Klaus was forced out of his thoughts when Caroline came out of his bathroom in a short, light blue flapper dress. "How do I look?" Caroline asked him and twirled.
Klaus got up and looked down at the baby vampire who looked so happy it made Klaus forget himself momentarily. "Radiant. As always, love."
"This is going to be so much fun," Caroline told him, wrapping her arms around his neck and kissing him quickly. Pulling away, Caroline walked over to the bed and grabbed the hat that was sitting there. "Come here," she whispered.
Smirking, Klaus walked over to Caroline and she placed the hat on top of his head. She then pulled the hat downward until their lips met. "I love you, Klaus," Caroline told him and Klaus smiled widely.
"I love you, too, Caroline," Klaus replied before picking her up and laying her on her back. "I think we have bit of time before we have to be at the dance."
"You know we should thank Damon. I mean it sounds funny," Caroline rambled on as she pulled Klaus' jacket off. "But if it weren't for Damon we wouldn't have met and fallen in love. I mean can you imagine what would have happened if we had met later on. I could be with anyone," Caroline continued speaking although all her clothes and hair pins were on the floor and as much as Klaus loved to listen to her talk sometimes he wanted her to be quiet. Pressing his lips to hers, he eased forward, feeling satisfaction at her sudden silence as her body moved with him.
However, the minute Klaus moved his mouth to anther body part, Caroline began to speak again. "I hated Damon for a long time because he was so awful to me when we first met. I mean has anyone ever told you that you're useless? That was just really hurtful. And so not true. And then you came along and you're like so much nicer to me, except you kind of act like Damon sometimes. But you're not Damon. Sorry. I shouldn't be talking about an ex when we're having sex. Anyway, do you think that you can send someone a fruit basket for their help in getting you together with someone? Even though they didn't do it on propose. Do you think he would even want fruit? How about a blood basket? But how would you make a blood basket?"
If Klaus could find a white oak stake he might very well use it on himself at that moment. Yes, finding a witch to help him go back into the past to alter the future might be ideal after all. "Klaus? Klaus? Are you even listening to me, Klaus?" Caroline called and he forced down the desire to break the head board and to stake his lover.
Looking down at Caroline, Klaus forced himself to really look at her. To look past his frustration of the impossibility of creating an army, a new family and looked down at the woman that made him crazy. "Caroline, I want you to know that I will never forget you." Klaus whispered.
Caroline blinked up at him. "Why does that sound like a good-bye? Klaus, what's going on?"
"Caroline, everything is fine. We need to get ready." Klaus informed her, getting up and walking around the room and gathering his clothes. Dressing quickly, he looked down at the confused looking girl in his bed. "I will see you downstairs." Seeing the hurt and confusion on Caroline's face, Klaus forced himself to leave. He was no good for her. She would see that in time. She should be with someone else. She would be happy. He would see to it.
Walking down the stairs, Klaus looked at his siblings. They were dressed and ready. They were just waiting for him and Caroline to come with them. Feeling his phone ring in his pocket, Klaus pursed his lips together when he saw the text. Sending off a quick reply, he waited for Caroline. "What is taking so long?" Rebekah demanded when Caroline appeared.
Klaus looked at Caroline and noticed that her eyes were puffy and he tried to force the emotions that the sight caused to rise within him. Yes, it would be better this way. Pressing his lips into a tight line, he walked with his family out to the car. The ride was silent except for Kol's constant commentary about why he should be the king of the bloody prom.
"Who cares, Kol?" Klaus had snapped having had enough of his brother's ramblings.
"You wound me with your words, brother," Kol cried out and Klaus glared at him in the rearview mirror while Caroline glared at the windshield. "And you wound your lady love with your temper," Kol added and Klaus thought about finding a dagger and putting an end to the torment that was listening to Kol's mouth.
"I will wound you with more than words if you do not shut it, Kol." Rebekah snarled as Klaus parked the car and they got out. They walked into the room the dance was being held in and Caroline walked away without a word to talk to her friends.
Klaus slipped into the hallway to talk to the witch he had been texting. In the hallway was the older woman who glared up at him. "Gloria," Klaus murmured with a wide smile. "Thank you for agreeing to meet with me on such short notice. And I must compensate you for your air travel."
Gloria rolled her eyes. "Don't try to be charming with me, Klaus Mikaelson. Look, you asked me to do something that most witches would not even try to attempt. Now, what I can tell you is what you want me to do is extremely dangerous and very stupid. And it probably won't work. For one thing I can't just plop you down wherever you please. You could end up in a period in which you can never return from. Are you sure that is what you want?"
Klaus growled. "Gloria, do you intend to make me angry? You know what happens to those who make me angry."
Sighing, Gloria stared at the floor. "If that's what you want. Then that's what you want. Who am I to argue?"
"Thank you, Gloria," Klaus replied and then he watched as the witch began to chant quietly. He felt the world begin to spin around him and there seemed to be a certain amount of uncertainty in where exactly he was going. Then he woke up on the floor. Looking at the ceiling, Klaus frowned up at it. There was annoying music playing in the background. Something from the 1990s. He had not meant to go back that far. Why the bloody hell was he here? Then he heard a woman scream. "Push, Liz, push." Getting to his feet, Klaus realized he was in a hospital. Cursing, he walked down that hall and looked into a room as a baby began to cry.
"It's a girl," the doctor announced and Klaus felt his eyes widen as he looked at the sheriff of Mystic Falls and presumably Caroline's father. Looking at the baby Klaus could only stand and watch Caroline being passed over to her parents. Feeling confused, Klaus walked down the hall. After some point a nurse came out with Caroline and walked her over to the nursery.
Forcing his body away from the wall, Klaus went over to see Caroline lying peacefully in the baby bed. He pressed his hand to the glass and couldn't stop staring at her. Then he felt a tug and cursed. Falling backwards through time, Klaus woke up to find a baby staring at him from her play pen. She gurgled up at him and he grinned. "Hello, Caroline."
Then there was another whoosh and Klaus felt himself moving again. This was becoming daunting. "Caroline, where are you, baby?" Liz could be heard yelling. Caroline was hiding in the bushes and she looked at Klaus and pressed her finger to her lips.
"Don't tell her," seven-year old Caroline pleaded. "I don't want to talk to her now that Daddy's leaving." Klaus nodded and felt tears prick his eyes. Then that infernal whoosh.
"Lena, why isn't he calling me back?" Twelve-year old Caroline asked her friend on her phone. She was sitting on her bed, the cord wrapped around her fist in a ball and then she dropped the phone when she saw Klaus. "I'll call you back. Klaus," He was shocked when the girl threw herself into his arms and he nearly fell over with her weight. "You came back."
"I did?" Klaus replied, wondering what the girl was talking about. "I suppose I did."
"I missed you. This boy I was telling you about last time, John. He's such a jerk. I think he likes older girls. He says that I talk too much and I'm not mature and that I have no breasts. See." Klaus tried not to laugh when Caroline flashed him. Not something he expected to see.
Actually, Klaus did not expect to see Caroline at all. "Anyway, so Elena and Bonnie don't have them either. We're going to be cheerleaders next year. I'm going to make captain when we go to high school because we're going to camp and I'm going to show them that I'm the best."
The darkness enfolded him again and then he was standing behind Caroline at age fourteen. She had begun to grow up and the breasts she was worried about had begun to appear. Klaus tried to not dwell on the thought as she struck a pose in her cheerleading outfit. "Klaus!" Caroline cheered when she saw him in the mirror and the pom poms went flying as she turned and leapt into his arms, wrapping her legs around his waist. "HI!"
"Hello, love," Klaus replied. "How are you today?"
"I got head cheerleader. I didn't think it would happen because everyone is like Elena, Elena and Elena. I love Elena but it's like I live in her shadow. But not with you. Because you love me best," Caroline enthused happily.
'Not again,' Klaus moaned internally as the darkness enfolded him and then he felt himself moving once again. This time he found his Caroline lying peacefully in bed. Lying down beside her, he traced her face and stared down at her. Feeling her warmth beneath his skin, he got up and walked over to her dresser.
Picking up a picture of Caroline, Bonnie and Elena, Klaus realized he found the right time period. If only he had enough time. Peering out the window, he found that the full moon was up. All he needed was a werewolf, a vampire and Elena Gilbert. He could do that quickly enough. This was his last chance. It was like someone was offering him a second chance to have everything he wanted. All he had to do was take it.
"Klaus," Caroline called sleepily and Klaus turned to look down at the girl, who was yawning and stretching. He could tell her to go back to bed. That she was sleeping. He could compel her to forget that he was there. She was blinking up at him with wide, sleepy eyes.
Walking over to the bed, Klaus looked down at Caroline. "Hello, my love," he whispered feeling an emotion stronger than his thirst for power or his hunger for revenge. He felt pure love for this mere girl as she rested her head against his.
"Hi. I missed you," Caroline mumbled drowsily and then she kissed him. And Klaus felt surprised as she tugged him toward her. He had never been with her when she was human. He was not sure what to think as he felt her warm flesh against his. 'Is this what humanity is about?' Klaus wondered.
Again, Klaus was pulled away from this time period or this world, too quickly, and he almost lost his mind in the darkness as he was ripped away from his human love. 'Caroline,' he screamed to the abyss and awoke on the floor of the Mystic Falls High.
"Well, did you get what you want?" Gloria asked, looking bored.
Klaus forced himself to his feet. "No. But I am about to," Klaus replied as he walked toward the dance. Striding over to Caroline and her friends, Klaus grabbed Caroline by the wrist and pulled her to the dance floor. Pulling her flush to him, Klaus pressed his lips to Caroline's.
When Klaus was done kissing Caroline until she was speechless for once, he looked down at her. "I love you, Caroline, and I intend to show that you every day for the rest of our lives. If you want babies. Then we will have babies. However, many that you want. If we have to spend years traveling the world to find the right witch so that you may have your wish than I will do it because I love you more than I hate anyone. No more revenge plot and no more hate. I do not intend to waste another day when I can spend every day loving you."
Not so far away from the happy couple, Damon and Elena exchanged a surprised look as they listened to the Original. They just wondered if he could stay true to his word.
