"Dude, this is seriously getting old…"
Beast Boy blinked away the glare and found himself upside down once again. Shaking his head he pulled at the ground, realizing in the process that the ground was actually slanted.
His hand then went to his side as the movement cause a spasm there. His fingers touched wet, and Beast Boy smelt blood. Closing his eyes he muttered a expletive, wondering where they were now.
A heavy screech interrupted him, and the ground shook. Opening his eyes Beast Boy saw that he was in some kind of train. From the angle and lack of anyone else, he assumed it was crashed. Briefly he was afraid they were in Lost, but then he remembered that that show had a plane crash, not a train.
After looking at his wound he decided it wasn't serious, and pulled his hand from it. Wiggling his bum he was able to turn over, and saw a white blue sky through the top of the car. Some more shuffling saw him able to climb, the grating in the floor providing purchase for his nimble fingers.
Unfortunately all that wiggling also moved the train, and as he began pulling his way up the whole cabin began to fall. A chair fell off to his left and Beast Boy followed it with his eyes as the seat crashed through the door below. The sight was not encouraging, as it revealed a seemingly endless drop, with only bits of mountain visible below.
Gulping audibly Beast Boy readied himself and made a mad dash up the floor, every step causing more shaking. At the top he grabbed hold of the broken door and tugged himself through, dismayed to see another car up ahead. At least this one was relatively level.
Scrambling some more Beast Boy finally crossed, and not a moment too soon; the car he had been in dropped into the void seconds later.
With a relieved sigh he wiped his brow and turned to continue, only to see another ridiculously crowded car. Seeing the climbing he'd have to do, the boy's memory clicked and he smiled, "Uncharted!"
"It most certainly is,"
The unimpressed voice with its dulcet tones was unmistakable, and Beast Boy whipped around to the bench beside him. There, legs crossed and eyes closed, was Raven, sporting a practical outfit just as filthy as his own.
He appraised her without shame; her eyes were closed after all, and asked, "You know Uncharted?"
The pale sorceress frowned, and one could almost hear her roll her eyes, "No, but this place is uncharted."
"Oh," Beast Boy stood there awkwardly for a moment, finally asking, "So, what are you doing?"
"I'm trying to find out what is blocking our powers."
"Oh," Beast Boy was silent for a spell, eyes inevitably returning to his friend.
"I can still sense emotions you know."
"Oh," Beast Boy blushed painfully and turned away, in his haste missing the small smile on Raven's face.
She sighed and uncrossed her legs, "It isn't working,"
Beast Boy's ears perked up, happy the topic had changed, "Well, in that case we should probably climb out; the train won't hang here forever."
Raven nodded and tugged at her shirt, displeased at how low it travelled. Beast Boy on the other hand simply walked to the nearest wall and crouched.
"What are you doing?" Raven asked when she noticed this.
Beast Boy rolled his eyes; "Giving you a boost, duh."
"As if I need it,"1 Raven sprinted at the wall and kicked her way up it, her nimble frame clearing the three feet to the top easily. When they got back home, she would have to thank Robin for making her train her body.
She pulled herself up and looked down at a pouting Beast Boy, "But, in the game I always help the girl climb…"
"How incredibly sexist," she replied.
Beast Boy shook his head, "Whatever,"
His smile returned and he crouched like a frog, and before she could blink he was flying through the air to land next to her. She looked at the teen, whose jump just defied the laws of physics, and he dusted off his shoulders, "Like a boss,"
"Well, whatever Control Freak has down, it looks like it only affects our powers. Our genetic abilities seem to be intact." Raven said, noting not for the first time how fit the little guy actually was.
Beast Boy nodded, striking a heroic pose, "Buns of steel…"
The two climbed in silence for a while, their physicality giving them both a huge advantage. In little time at all they were standing in the final car, solid mountain side visible through a massive gouge in the car's side.
"I wonder where Cyborg is," Beast Boy pondered, as he hopped after Raven into the snow. Train tracks stretched into the distance, but otherwise the area was barren of life.
"So," Raven began, "This game seems…fun."
Beast Boy looked to his teammate, head cocked to the side, "Well, there is usually a dude with a gun around here. But I guess Control Freak messed that up,"
"Actually, I didn't."
Both heroes whipped around and stared at the fat nerd, who was sporting a set of black combats, a nasty looking pistol poking into the side of non other than Cyborg.
"I am the feared dictator-terrorist Controlarzic (control-are-a-vitch), and I have your friend here at gun point."
"As if we couldn't see that," Raven mumbled, crossing her arms against the cold. The wind was beginning to pick up, blowing stinging bits of snow into her exposed arms.
"Dude, you still messed it up. Lazaravitch wasn't in the part of the train that crashed."
The geek sputtered, wrinkling the fake scar on his head, "As if it matters, I'm speeding things up."
The villain's foot came up sharply, kicking Cyborg into the snow. They saw now that his hands were bound behind his back, titanium plates replaced with iron. He grunted, "Come on Control Freak, couldn't you at least give me my hands?"
"Silence metal one!" Controlarzic backed up, gun trained on the prone hero. "Your end will come soon enough,"
With that, a howl was heard in the mountain wind. It rose in pitch and faded into a growl, causing Raven to look to Beast Boy in what could pass for concern. His green skin had paled and he was backing toward the train car. Cyborg wiggled forward, frantically tugging at his binds.
Another howl followed the first, and Control Freak let out an evil laugh, and feigning a Russian accent, "Now boy, you have been a thorn in my side long enough. You will die,"
From the blizzard hunched forms appeared, their heavy breathing growing in volume. White eyes shone out from horned skulls, all atop a hulking body of fur. Raven bit her tongue to keep from screaming; these beasts, she knew these beasts… she flashed back to her youth, foolishly leaving the monastery…
Cyborg at last snapped the binds and stood, brushing snow from his plates, seemingly unconcerned by the creatures inching ever closer. Beast Boy was wracking his brain, glancing around while unconsciously stepping in front of Raven.
Controlarzic ran off down the wreckage, laughing manically. Cyborg watched him go, then grabbed Beast Boy's shoulder. The other looked up at him, eyes full of fear; there was no way out. Cy just smiled, nodding toward the clearing between the two closest cars. Beast Boy looked, uncomprehending, then a grin split his features, and he nodded back.
Beast Boy sprinted and Cyborg dove for Raven. The blizzard creatures were too far to leap, and simply watched as the crazy green kid rolled under the overturned car. Some changed course toward this metal box, the rest continuing their silent march to Raven and Cyborg, the latter having dragged the door of their car shut.
Raven huddled in the corner, while Cy peered through the wall's holes. The metal didn't seem very thick with the creatures approaching. He backed up and picked up a pipe from the ground, knowing that if it came time to use it, they were screwed anyway.
All was silent for a moment, then a mechanical wire was heard, followed by a deafening crack and thud. Cy smiled, relaxing at last. Raven peered up at him in confusion, longing for her hood. The first crack was followed by many more in quick succession, growing in frequency. Thuds of something hitting the ground followed the loud sounds which Raven now placed as gun fire; big gun fire.
She stood and peered through the burned wall, and to her surprise saw a military truck, and mounting the turret stood a grinning Beast Boy. The first wave of creatures had fallen, and more came, but Beast Boy kept fire, picking off the tough monsters with little effort.
"Let's go!" he shouted when he noticed her gaze.
Cyborg mumbled, "Hold on kid," and wrapped his arm around Raven's torso, raised a heavy boot a kicking in the door. He ran to the tank and Raven squirmed out of his grip, embarrassment setting in for her earlier panic. Cyborg on the other hand slapped Beast Boy on the back, sliding into the driver's seat.
Raven could have sworn she heard Cy mutter, "I'm too old for this shit," just before the truck jerked into drive. The engine roared, and Beast Boy cheered, swivelling like mad to pick off every monster that poked its head out.
The truck tore down the mountain path, passing by train car after train car. In the distance Raven could make out the form of Control Freak, beating a hasty retreat via motorcycle. Cy pressed the pedal to the floor, shifting into the top gear the truck had. Beast Boy glanced back, and seeing their quarry cheered again, but accidently firing the gun. The bullet travelled at an odd angle, striking a tank previously unnoticed in the wreckage.
Beast Boy whipped his head around, mouth open, only to see a fire ball the size of Titan's Tower chasing them. "Oh crap," he said, sheepish.
The explosion roared and kicked the already unstable mountain path, and Raven grabbed the dash, knuckles turning whiter as the road began to shift and fall, thousands of feet, into the abyss.
"BB what did you do?" Cyborg hollered, jerking the wheel and ramping off of the crumbling road bits, barely keeping them alive.
"It was an accident!" Beast Boy raised his hands in a show of innocence, only to be knocked as they hit another fissure. He flailed his arms, but to no avail; he was falling. A small hand caught his just as he flipped over the edge, holding fast.
Beast Boy's feet dragged on the ground, painfully jarring as Cyborg wove a precise path through the crumbling pass. Beast Boy looked up and saw Raven there, red shirt making her skin look pink against the sky. He was at a loss for words, but evidently Raven was not, "Give me your other hand you idiot!"
He complied, and the surprisingly strong girl pulled him back into the truck. Cyborg grunted, swerving to avoid a swath of avalanche, causing Raven to stumble, landing over Beast Boy, face inches from his. Beast Boy wiggled his eyes, "If you wanted that you could have just asked."
The other frowned, and 'accidently' elbowed his nose as she stood up again. Control Freak was significantly closer now, obviously panicking from the mess Beast Boy had caused. If nothing else, Raven thought, Beast Boy could go into demolition if their powers didn't return.
Cyborg manoeuvred the truck so it passed Control Freak, and Raven leaned out, grabbing the fat man's belt. Beast Boy ignored the throbbing of his nose and caught Raven's feet, dragging her and Control Freak into the back seat. The bike wobbled and crashed, only to be swallowed moments later by the encroaching avalanche.
Raven stood over Control Freak, the other cowering as she raised her fist. Just as her fist would reach his nose, Control Freak pressed a button on his remote, which appeared seemingly from nowhere. He vanished, and Raven's fist passed through air. Just then the path disappeared entirely, and Cyborg shouted as the Truck hurtled into the abyss.
"Crap," Was all Raven could get out before in a flash, they all vanished once again.
