Chapter 20: Mislead

Connie was getting too riled up. He sped on faster than the others, leaving Bertholdt and Reiner behind. They were almost there...and Connie was getting impatient. He was worried. His house...his mom, his dad. He felt like breaking down...but he knew he had to keep going...he had to.

"Connie wait! You're going too fast!" Reiner shouted on his hours. Bertholdt followed after him. The blonde continued. "We don't know where the titans might be! Fall back for now!"

Connie didn't listen. He kept going, he was so close, the houses were visible. He went faster, heart drowning in panic at the miserable sight. Nearly everything was destroyed. The houses...the roads...everything was lonely and abandoned. Connie shook violently, sweat dropping. "Y-you gotta be kidding me! Somebody! Is anybody here?! It's me Connie! I'm back!" His voice faltered, he felt like crying. His horse rode between the forsaken streets. "I gotta check my place..." He whispered in anguish. Thoughts of his parents flashed through his mind. "Dad...mom...Sunny...Martin." His horse stopped. He stared at the titan that lay sprawled on his destroyed home. He didn't know what he felt...he was empty.

The footsteps of nearby horses echoed throughout the street. Reiner grabbed on to Connie's arm. "Fall back!"

Connie sucked in a lungfull of air. "My home! I-It's my..."

"Fall back at once! Check the surroundings!" The squad leaders shouted. They rode around the titan.

"Wait a minute!" Someone shouted. "That titan can't move! Not with it's limbs like that!" He scanned the titans appearance. It had unusually huge ribs and tiny arms.

Reiner stared. "But then...how the hell did this titan even get here?!" It was completely sprawled on the house, legs too skinny to carry it's weight.

They each got off of their horses, knowing it was safe. Connie stood by the titan, surveying the crushed house. It was hopeless...it was all for nothing in the end...hoping to come back to see the proud faces of his parents...of his people. He cried. Silent tears fell down his cheeks as he bit his lip hard to keep any noises from coming out. It felt terrible, his throat felt as if it weighed a ton, and his chest hurt. He couldn't stop shaking through the sobs.

Reiner shouted over to him. "Connie any survivors?!"

The small boy held his breath. He didn't want them to hear his cracked voice, or see his face. So he answered deeply, without turning around. "None, no one survived, there's nothing, no one...my home doesn't exist anymore...there's nothing."

Bertholdt stared blankly as Reiner clenched his teeth and gripped Connies shoulder with emotion. The squad leader walked towards them. "There's something strange about this place, did any of you see any dead bodies around?"

Connie shook his head sadly. Reiner did as well. "no."

Bertholdt looked around. "I don't see any either."

The blonde man frowned uneasily. "Is this even possible? For titans to destroy a whole village without leaving a single drop of blood behind?"

The woman beside him smiled. "I would say this means they all managed to escape in time! Because if they really had been devoured, there would have been at least some traced left, but there's none so no one got eaten i'm sure! They discovered titans fast enough to escape!" She still had hope.

Connie held on to that. "T-that must be how it really was! Because there's no other explanation right?!"

She nodded, trying to convince herself more than she tried to convince him. "Sure...they all escaped safely, and might even be in wall Sina by now."

The blonde man stared at her, he wasn't convinced in the least. Not only was it odd that there were no bodies around, but if they really had escaped, the titans wouldn't be so through about destroying the houses. But what was even more incomprehensible was the stables that he saw on his way to the village. They were full of horses still tied up. Even if the villagers managed to escape on foot their chances of survival were extremely low. Nevertheless he couldn't let Connie see those stables. "We gathered enough torches?" He asked. "Then we're now setting to locate the breach in the wall, all hands get ready to deapart."

Connie gave the fallen titan one last glance before following the others and hopping on his own horse. He was about to kick to get it to move when he heard it.

"Wel-com-back." It sounded shaky, alien, and totally out of character. Not only because those words came out of the titan, but because it said it with feeling. Connie froze, and stared back into the titans eyes. Those eyes...He steered his horse to move. He was sweating. Just now...did that titan really just...

Reiner rode of to him, gripping his shoulder. It startled Connie. "Hey! Connie! Hurry up, you're gonna get left behind!"

Connie shook his head stubbornly. "Reiner...did you hear? Just now...that titan..."

"I heard nothing!" Reiner shouted. "Now's not the time to be talking! Focus on the mission!"

Connie went on. "You know...somehow, that titan...I know it sounds crazy but, somehow...it looks like mom."

Reiners face went dark. "Connie! Do you realize the situation we're in?! Do you understand how dozens of human lives will be affected by our actions?! Or do you want to say indulging bizzare delusions is more important than that?! If you're gonna let your imagination run wild, then at least use it to picture your family escaping as we speak! And if you're a soldier then do your best here and now!"

Connie grit his teeth in determination. "Indeed..." He gripped the reins harder and shouted. "That's right!" They sped on. Bertholdt held back a little, eyes shining.

"Wait...there's something I gotta do, I'll catch up with you later." He turned his horse around and sped back. Reiner and Connie shouted after him, but he was gone.

"Leave him...it can't be helped." Reiner muttered, confused eyes staring after him. He had been acting strange lately, and he didn't know what could be more important to Bertholdt than their mission? He didn't know what was on his mind...

"Alright..." Whispered Connie. They continued on without the tall male.

...

Meanwhile, with the stationary group, rose division, a man was leading a titan. It was a trap to kill it. After all, they needed to clear the area as soon as possible. When the titan was where they wanted him to be, the man in the horse shouted "Fire!"

The roar of cannons firing echoed throughout the place, the balls collided with the titan, but it was only enough to slow him down. Now was the time to do it. A woman with glasses rose high into the air, her gear helped her levitate across the sky towards the titans neck. She spun, cutting the back of its neck with ease as blood pooled from the wound. It landed in a bloody heap on the ground. She moved to land on a nearby rooftop. Her comrade came up to her.

"You're amazing squad leader Roco! If we keep this up, then we may be able to defend this area well." He stated.

She shook her head. "Nope, the most frightening thing about titans is their numbers, if they come to us in masses then we wont be able to defend for long...only how should i put it? There's something..."

...

"Strange."

Hannes was leading the stationary troops of wall rose towards the south. it was almost completely dark...and he was tired. But he couldn't help thinking this was all so strange.

"Is something wrong squad leader Hannes?" The man beside him asked from on top of his horse.

Hanne's huffed from the cold air. It was slightly sprinkling...he hoped it wouldn't start pouring now of all times. "There hasn't been a single titan in sight, which is unthinkable...Considering the fact that we must be getting close to the breach, and yet its still al pretty much quiet and peacful, last time a lot of them gathered for the upcoming feast before they made a hole in the wall... I wish things kept quiet from now on too but it's probably too much to ask."

...

It has been nine hours since the breach. It was dark, really dark...the torches were only enough to light their surroundings. Titans could be coming any minute now. It was a suicide mission and everyone knew it. Connie and Reiner were nervous. It was killing them not to know when the titans would show. They were doomed if they did, fighting in the pitch black dark was impossible. They needed Sakura now more than ever...but she wasn't there. They were too vulnerable.

"Huh?!" Connie spotted a few lights heading their way. They stopped and waited for the figures to emmerge. It was Ymir and Christa, along with a couple others. They were holding torches as well.

"You guys are running along the wall as well?" Reiner asked.

The blonde woman from Ymir's side answered. "Yeah...so, where's the breach located?"

Reiners eyes widened. "Huh?"

Ymir scowled. "What do you mean 'huh?' we've been running along the wall all the way from the west and found no breach, so since the breach wasn't on our end it must be on yours."

There was a stunned silence. The squad leader from Reiner's side spoke shakily, "There wasn't a breach on our side either..." They stared at the floor in silence. Nothing was making any sense...

"Could you overlook it somehow?" Christa asked.

Reiner shook his head. "impossible, we're looking for a hole huge enough for titans to squeeze through after all."

"Okay so what now? Should we check again?" The squad leader asked.

"We should but both us and the horses are pretty much at our limit, you can't expect much from us in the dark." Christa murmured. "If only there was some moonlight at least."

"agreed." Reiner muttered under his breath. The petite girl caught a glimpse of a large shadow and she gasped.

"What is it?" The blonde squad leader asked. Christa pointed forward.

They followed her finger. "It looks like ruins of a broken down castle."

"It is too dark to look for he hole now, why not rest there until early morning?" Christa offered hopefully.

"Good idea, it's better than blindly looking." The squad leader muttered. They made their way towards the ruins quickly, nervously keeping an eye out for nearby titans. Once they were close enough to it, the ruins looked ancient. They each got off of their horses and led them under some run down stables. There were still water holders around, thankfully, and they filled it with water using the old faucets still intact on the side of the broken down walls. They gathered the torches and put them together on the ground, around a pile of rocks and old coal. It was the best they could do at the moment.

"Sheesh, the castle is so close to the wall, yet there are signs of somebody living here until just recently. Some hoodlum made it their stronghold I bet, the doorplate says these are ruins of castle Utgard...and I had no idea there was a castle in this area." The short haired blonde squad leader said smiling. They were inside the ruins, huddled in a circle around the fire. It was a cozy spot to be in, and they were thankful that they found the place.

The door to the side of the wall opened and the male squad leader entered holding a bottle. "Hey look what I found, to think that something like this is here, huh? What's it say on the lable?"

"Gerger is that wine?" Reiner asked curiously. "Don't tell me you're going to drink it!"

He frowned. "Course not, not at a time like this..."

Someone butted in. "But still, who could've thought we could have a nice little respite here thanks to bandits loot."

"It's kinda hard to tell now who the thieves here are." The blonde woman muttered, short locks drooping down and aglow in the fire. She got up and glanced at Christa sitting next to Ymir. "You rookies make sure you rest well, daytime has ended a while ago so I doubt there are titans around that can move, but to be on the safe side, we're gonna take turns being on lookout, we're gonna set out four hours before dawn."

Christa looked up, blue eyes tired from lack of sleep. "Excuse me...if the wall isn't really breached...from where could those titans infiltrate?" It was a question that has been bothering her for a while now. Everyone stayed silent.

Gerger sighed. "We're gonna look into that tomorrow, right now your orders are to rest."

He got up and walked up the spiral stairs in the room, footsteps echoing throughout the waited until he was gone to speak. "Could it be that...the situation is very different than what was initially assumed? It's just that..." She paused.

The man across from her finished for her. "There are way too few titans appearing for now, I have to wonder if the wall really has been breached."

"The only titans we have come across were the ones we saw in the very beginning." The female squad leader murmured. Ymir's head shot up.

"Connie? What happened to your home village?" She asked.

Connie frowned. "It was destroyed, we arrived there after it had been trampled over by titans."

Christa and Ymir stared apologetically, eyes full of sympathy. Ymir closed her eyes and lowered her head. "I see..." Ymir started. "I'm sorry to hear tha-However no one was eaten, seems like they all managed to escape safely, at least some relief about the whole ordeal."

Ymir frowned in confusion. "But didn't you say your village was destroyed?"

Connie glanced at her. "Well the buildings were destroyed but no victims among the villagers. When people get devoured, you can find blood and other traces at the scene, right? There was nothing like that there, so the only logical assumption is that they all escaped in time." Ymir stared, unsure of what to make of it. Connie went on. "Only...there's something that has been bothering me ever since...the titan lying on my house. It couldn't move with it's body like that, yet for some reason it was taking a nap right in my house...and the thing about it is...somehow, it's appearance really reminded me of my mom, what the hell can it mean?"

Reiner narrowed his eyes at the smaller boy. "Connie...you still keep saying that non-sence? Are you really a blithering idiot?"

At that moment Ymir burst out laughing. "Your mom was a titan Connie! Then why are you such a midget?! So? Whatcha say to this Connie? Facts kinda add up that way you know!" They stared at her in confusion.

Reiner snorted. "I knew you were an idiot...but maybe it's the opposite?"

"Maybe you're a genius? Well?" Ymir laughed.

Connie shot her an annoyed look and rose his hand to scratch his head. "Ahh...enough, quiet down already, your making it ridiculous."

Ymir grinned. "Hey so if what you said is correct, doesn't that make your dad a titan too? Cause you know...if he wasn't then you couldn't do it..." Her smile was malicious, and as big as the cheshire cats.

Connie's head snapped up, he was more than annoyed now. "Shut the hell up shithead woman! Go sleep already!"

They laughed as their voices echoed throughout the vast, empty tower.

...

"Ugh!" I shouted. It was too dark to see anything. Sasha and I had to make the horse walk really slowly to avoid rousing any nearby titans in their sleep. It was annoying. Every time we heard a crunching of twigs, or even the slightest of noises such as leaves rustling we would freak out. It was just too dark, I couldn't see a damn thing.

"We need to find shelter and fast." She muttered.

I nodded. "Are you sure we are heading east? This is taking forever..."

She huffed in the cold air. I was cold as well...with only a damn skirt. Eren was right, I could already feel the welts that were going to grace my legs with their appearance. "I'm sure." Sasha stated. "We can take shelter there...I think Connie an the rest left already."

I pouted. We should have stayed at her village, but we didn't know it was going to get this dark. There was literally no moonlight. "Maybe we will bump into someone." I muttered hopefully.

"Maybe..."Sasha whispered.

"Hey Sasha? Did you see Mikasa tear up my clothes and setting my horse free that one time we went swimming?" It was bothering me...for some reason, I couldn't leave that memory from my mind.

I could hear her give a confused hm? "Um...someone did that?" She asked in surprise.

"Yeah...my clothes were torn, and my horse was gone, that's why I stayed behind...Levi and Armin found me, I suspect Mikasa because we were arguing in the water..."

Sasha paused. "Hold on...wait..." I waited for her response patiently. "No, that's impossible, she was way ahead of us before your horse was set free, and your clothes were still there, maybe it was a bear? It could have torn your clothes and scared the horse away."

I frowned. It wasn't a bear...I would have seen it, but then...if it wasn't Mikasa, then who was it? Erwin? No way...he couldn't have, why would he? I shivered in the cold air. Unless he was a total pervert and wanted to keep me there. But Erwin? That didn't make much sense. "But the horse was tied up right, were there any people in the area besides you guys?"

She thought for a moment. "No not really...that's kind of creepy though, maybe you have a stalker?"

I slumped my shoulders. It was hopeless. The only person it could have been was Erwin, but him a stalker? The lable didn't go with him too well. I stiffened at the sound of faint footsteps. "Wait Sasha, shhh, hear that?"

She stiffened as well and stopped the horse. We listened. It sounded like faint tapping on the floor. A titan? We muffled our heavy breathing and stood completely still. What the hell was it? After a while, we could see a faint light a few feet away from us. It looked like another person on a horse. We gasped in delight. Another person at last! We crept closer to the person, and saw that the source of light was a torch. It was a man with dark hair...Bertholdt. He waited for him to get closer and smiled like fools as soon as the light shone on our faces. "Bertholdt! Boy are we glad to see you!" I said, grinning wolfishly. His face lit up at the sight of us.

"Sakura, Sasha, I was looking for you." His eyes lingered at mine and he squinted. "I thought you were alone..." His tone sounded strange...but I didn't think much of it.

"well I was at first, but I bumped into Sasha on my way to her village...why are you alone Bertholdt?" I asked.

He shook his head. "I...wanted to find you, you know, we need you, you're the only titan shifter besides Eren..." He murmured quickly. He seemed nervous.

"Well now that we are reunited, lets go to the others." Sasha said with relief.

"Not in this darkness, we need to lay low, Connie's village is just up ahead, lets go there and rest, we can head out in the early morning." The tall man stated.

We agreed and followed him. He seemed strange for some reason...kind of distant and tense, as if awaiting something. But then again it was Bertholtd. He was a shy and quiet guy. "Is the village alright?" I asked.

"bertholdt glanced at me before answering. "No, the titans trampled over it, it's destroyed but there are still some houses intact."

Sasha and I exchanged glances. "I feel so sorry for Connie." She murmured.

"There is reason to believe they might have survived, there weren't any dead bodies anywhere." Bertholdt said reasuring her.

"Good, at least they survived...hopefully." I murmured. For Connie...

We were silent the rest of the way. When we came across the town, I gave a sigh of relief. Finally...we could rest. Bertholdt picked a house that was close enough to the woods, and we got off of our horses hastily, tying them up to a nearby pole, while Sasha grabbed a few lone buckets to fill with water from the inside faucets. She brought them out to the horses and watched as they drank.

"Ah...they were tired, and so am I, but I'm thirstyyyy." She wined as we entered the household.

"Sasha, there is water right there." I grumbled while pointing to the sink.

She made a face, "That's tapwater..."

Bertholdt shot her a small smile. "I have a container of water in the horses pouch, i'll go get it."

Sasha grinned at him as he headed outside. "Thank you savior!" She moved to fall back on the long couch by the small coffee table. "This is pretty cozy, might as well enjoy the rest while we can."

"Yeah..." I muttered, falling back on a chair and resting my head on the table. Bertholdt came back and handed Sasha the container. She grabbed it and gulped it down greedily.

"You guys don't want some?" She asked. I shook my head.

"No thank you, I just want some sleep." I murmured tiredly.

Bertholdt declined as well. "I'm not very thirsty."

She shrugged. "Suit yourself!" She chided as she gulped down the whole thing and slumped back on the couch. Bertholdt joined me on the table.

"You know...our superiors are suspecting you of being the traitor, that's why I came looking for you, they want a word with you." He whispered so Sasha wouldn't hear.

I frowned. "but...I thought Erwin cleared me?"

He stared at me. It was making me uncomfortable. "No...He has been suspecting you all this time, so has the Corporal, they were just lying to you, pretending you were needed, they just wanted to use you before they had you put down."

I didn't know how to react. My chest felt like it would explode...my stomach dropped. I felt sick. I blinked several times to clear my head. "You're lying." I accused flatly. He didn't falter.

"No...it's true, I'm sorry, they were planning on killing you underground, but not before making use of you." He muttered.

I shot up from my seat and walked towards the window, gripping the sill hard. My heart was beating a million times a second. I breathed heavily. Levi? Levi wouldn't...no...he betrayed me? But why...I...I, I loved him. I admitted it. It was a strong epiphany...I loved him. No matter how much I hated it, how much I denied it, how much I pretended I had no idea what was up with me. I fell for that bastard. Because he was like Sasuke? No...Because he was everything Sasuke wasn't. He cared...deep down...and I loved him for it. Was it fake? For Bertholdt to tell me something like that...it was a punch in the face...my huge bubble burst into nothingness. I felt broken. I clenched my teeth, trying to calm myself. "How do you know this..." I muttered in a tight voice. My throat was already feeling heavy.

He came up behind me. "I overheard them talking...They were laughing, saying you were really gullible..."

The tears came then. I couldn't help it, I felt so backstabbed, so betrayed. It happened again, I fell in love and I got betrayed...I really was an idiot. But I didn't want Bertholdt to see me this way so I side-stepped him and walked towards Sasha. She was passed out, completely. Her breathing was shallow and even.

"I can help you escape." Bertholdt offered. I frowned and wiped my face with the back of my hand. I should have just left this place...I should have never agreed to help.

"Why would you?" I grumbled out.

"Because...I feel bad...I mean, you're a good person, so I want to help you." He shifted around nervously. I gave a dry laugh.

"A good person? Well look where it landed me, I'm a huge idiot, nothing more, and how will you help me?" I murmured, throat still tight.

"They're expecting me to bring you to the north, Corporal and the Commander are waiting, you can escape right now, I don't have to bring you." Hesaid bluntly.

I shook my head. "No...bring me to them, I want revenge before leaving, I mean, I want a word with the Corporal." I was angry. Levi was going to pay...hard. What could I say to him anyway? Nothing but a barrage of curses.

His eyebrows rose. "You sure?"

I nodded. "Yeah, let's wake Sasha up first." I moved to shake her shoulder. "Sasha...hey." I said outloud. She wasn't waking. She was completely knocked out, the container of water by her side. I frowned. Was she this tired? I wiped more tears from my eyes. Dammit...I was hurting. I needed to stop if I didn't want her to see me like this. "hey." I said more loudly this time. She was out cold.

"She's asleep, just leave her, I can come back for her later." He moved to grip my wrists. I squirmed away.

"What are you doing?" I said frowning.

"Tieing you up, the wall religion requested it, they don't trust you." He stated calmly, yet a little nervously.

I paused, feeling uneased. But it made sense...they were a paranoid lot. "Okay..."I whispered, letting him wrap rope around my wrists. He tied it carefully, then proceeded to make my fists clench and wrapped duct-tape around them. I snickered. "Really?"

He nodded. "They are aware of what you can do."

I sighed. Guess it couldn't be helped. My chest was still feeling heavy, I couldn't wait to see that cold bastard. How could he do this to me? I stared at Sasha as Bertholdt bound me. She was breathing really slowly...too slowly. Her face was even a little pale. My eyes widened. It was almost as if...she was drugged.

"Mike will be waiting for you as well, he made it." Bertholdt whispered.

My heart stopped for a second. "Mike?" I asked slowly.

"Yeah, he came back after all, see? You shouldn't have left, Mike can handle himself." He stated.

I frowned. "But...he wasn't injured?"

He smiled up at me. "No, he's in one piece, not injured at all, he came back on his horse but he left with the others."

I couldn't believe it. Bertholdt was lieing. Mike was taken to wall Sina with Sasha's people, too passed out and hurt to even move. Bertholdt was lying to me...what were his intentions? If he was lying about that...what else was he lying about? My hands were tied, what was he going to do with me? I felt a moment of panic seize me. Sasha was drugged, that water was spiked, My arms were tied behind me, Bertholdt was probably the freak that tore my clothes while I was swimming. This freak...he was insane. I had to calm down, he couldn't know what I was feeling. Slowly and steadily I turned around. "Bertholdt...can you loosen my belts? My legs are killing me." I said flatly, blankly. My voice sounded odd, like it wasn't mine. His eyes bore into mine. This was my only chance.

"Sure." He bent down and brushed his fingers against my thighs a little too softly. I could see a faint pink grace his cheeks. Now was my chance. Without warning I stepped back and sent a hard kick to his face. My foot collided with it and he was sent sprawling on the floor with a cry of surprise. Heart thumping madly, I dashed towards the door, but felt a body slam against mine. Arms wrapped themselves around me in a vicegrip as Bertholdt pulled me off my feet against his body, nose a bloody mess. I screamed and kicked furiously.

"Sasha! Sasha!" I yelled at the top of my lungs. It did no good, she was passed out.

"Shut up!" Bertholdt growled. He cringed, he was trying hard not to be too rough.

I sent my head back to hit him, it worked. He released me to grip his nose in pain and I took the moment to run towards the door yet again. I couldn't open it so I kicked it down, then stepped over it to make a run for it in the woods. My feet pounded hard on the dirt, as I ran, my breath came out in pants, sending fog out into the air. He was coming after me, I knew, I could hear his footsteps. Well he couldn't catch up, I was faster. I picked up the pace, No...I had very little chakra from healing mike. I had to preserve it. I made a dash into a patch of bushes and crouched, trying hard to calm my breathing. I tugged at the rope and tape...I needed something sharp. I waited for a while. I could hear faint footsteps a few feet away. He was looking for me...I contemplated just running away...but I couldn't leave Sasha behind like this, I needed to rescue her. I bit my lip, deep in thought. I couldn't preform jutsus, my hands were balled up into fists with the tape...I could only use my chakra to run fast...could I transform? No...too risky. I would attract titans. I couldn't risk that. I had no choice but to sneak in for her. I got up slowly and took a peek around me. It was too dark to see...but I couldn't hear his foot steps anymore...I slowly crept around the trees...trying to find the small path leading to the house. I stopped and twirled around, panting. Where the hell was he...I didn't feel safe not knowing where he was. I steped around some patches of weeds and nearly stumbled on an exposed tree root. I dropped to my knees and listened. I thought I could hear breathing...or was it my imagination? I got up and looked around, squinting in the wasn't there any moonlight? A noise of bushes rustling made me jump. I turned towards the noise defensively, shaking with the cold.

I waited...and nearly cried out when an animal dashed out and ran past me. I took a deep breath and laughed softly. Maybe Bertholdt left thinking I kept running...now was my chance. I turned around and bumped into a chest. A small scream left my lips as big hands gripped my shoulder and shoved me down. I fell with a loud thud and squirmed violently as Bertholdt threw himself on top of me, straddling my body.

"Get away!" I shouted, biting into his hand as he pressed it into my mouth. He growled and slammed my back against the floor, knocking the air out of me.

"Shut up...shut up...Sakura I don't want to hurt you!" He shouted. I headbutted him, which caused him to snarl in anger. He sent a hard punch, and I saw stars dancing within my vision. I blacked out to the sound of my body being dragged across the forest grass.
