Chapter Eighteen: Here Tomorrow Gone Today
75th Hunger Games: Quarter Quell
Katniss hasn't spoken to Finnick in five weeks, mainly because the Reaping is fast approaching it's today after all but she didn't say goodbye to him before he left. Something she deeply regrets, Katniss wishes she hadn't been such a coward. Naturally she took off before he woke up, since the Hob was shut down and the fence is on all the time now, she hid out in the Seam visiting the Winthrops.
Katniss selfishly hoped Finnick would be reaped so she would have time to make it up to him. No, that's not right she would rather it be that Blaine kid who won instead of Ember and Dante. Katniss ideally wants the other Victor tributes to be strangers then the ones she has grown close to.
This was her sixth Reaping and would be her fourth Hunger Games, but despite all of Katniss's experience and preparation she was a nervous wreck. Katniss has already thrown up three times this morning from nerves. After all it was a guarantee she would be going back into the arena.
Surprisingly, the only Everdeen that wasn't an emotional wreck was Sia. The fifteen year old has taken some weight of her older sisters shoulders by being the family rock instead of Katniss. Alana and Primrose have been fretting over the stressed seventeen year old Victor, worried as Katniss continued to get sick despite their efforts to heal her. Telstar was been extremely clingy and throwing crying fits not grasping the fact Katniss doesn't have a choice she has to go. Freesia kept a calm and cool head making sure everyone got dressed and arrived on time for the Reaping.
Katniss was deeply grateful that her little sister took charge of things for once and that she got a break from it. Then she felt ashamed that Sia had to, after all its her responsibility not Sia's.
"Katniss Everdeen" Effie called her voice breaking, the escort looked like she wanted to cry.
Katniss calmly made her way to the stage, her face was in a blank mask despite hearing the sobs and cries of her loved ones. She had to keep her wits about her even though all she wanted to do was throw up again. Instead she anxiously waited to hear if it is going to be sweet young Dean who was madly in love with Annie and has been like an annoying little brother she never had (Tel wasn't annoying he was adorable) or grouchy old Haymitch who has already been haunted by a Quarter Quell and he has annoyingly been the closet thing she's had to a father in years (even though it would be more accurate to describe him as the embarrassing drunk uncle), Katniss didn't know which one she wanted to suffer with her. Neither one deserves this.
"Haymitch Abernathy" Katniss was probably the only one who noticed Effie's devastated look as she called the older Victor. After all they've known each other for years, despite their differences and petty squabbles the Capitol escort and the alcoholic mentor were good friends.
Haymitch briefly looked frightened again Katniss was the only one to notice, to everyone one else he looked cocky and arrogant as he swaggered to the stage. Ruffling Effie's wig in the process of making his way to where Katniss stood, the escort's lips quivered in an exasperated fondness her eyes were still teary. Haymitch causally threw his arm around Katniss, he ignored her half hearted glare. When they were told to shake hands Haymitch instead took her hand into his and raised it in the air very similar to her and Peeta during last year's Opening Ceremony. Katniss spotted Sia, her little sister raised her three middle fingers to her lips before raising them in the air. The whole district followed.
The peacekeepers weren't happy by the act of defiance, Haymitch and Katniss weren't allowed to say goodbye. They along with Effie and Dean were rushed onto the train.
Katniss was still shaken by seeing Darius turned into an avox, as she and the others gathered around to watch nervously which other Victors were reaped.
District One Tributes: Gloss and Cashmere Hargrove, the beautiful blonde siblings who won their games back to back Victors of the 63rd & 64th. Gloss was 30 and Cashmere was 29, both were still in great shape they looked devastated they would be going into the arena together. However they were still dangerous.
Katniss started to play with her knives as she glared hatefully at Gloss. Memories of her appointments that she usually forced herself to forget tried to bubble to the surface. Katniss grinded her teeth as she forced them back down.
District Two Tributes: Enobaria Bryne, Victor of the 62nd Hunger Games, she was 31 years old, and judging by the fact she had her teeth altered into fangs she also was a threat. Brutus Armstrong, Victor of the 46th Hunger Games, he was now 47 and he actually volunteered to participate in the third Quarter Quell.
Haymitch shook his head disgusted at the older Career. Dean looked shocked that anyone would volunteer for this after already being a Victor. Katniss let out a growl as she shredded a pillow with her knife. Her glare at Brutus was even more furious as she tried to stop the memories overpowering her. The others looked at her shocked and in concern but Haymitch also looked disturbed slowly putting the pieces together. Once, Haymitch figured it out he joined Katniss in glaring hatefully at Brutus.
District Three Tributes: Wiress Denning, Victor of the 49th Hunger Games, she was 43 years old and Katniss remembered briefly meeting her once along with Beetee Latiar. Beetee won the 38th Hunger Games, he was currently 54 years old, and he was holding up a distraught Wiress.
Katniss vaguely remembered Johanna called them "Nuts and Volts", despite that Katniss knew they were good people and very intelligent. Haymitch gripped the bottle of alcohol in his hand but didn't drink it, he still was on the sober bandwagon. Katniss knew he was friends with Beetee, having seen them chat at that Victor party years ago.
Both Dean and Katniss gulped nervously as District 4 was next. Haymitch gave them each darkly amused smirks but he was ignored be his younger companions. Effie however gave him a glare for being insensitive and having no manners.
District Four Tributes: Annie Cresta (" No, no, no. Not her, Not Annie" Dean rambled hysterical and distraught) But then kind old Mags Fuller volunteered, Victor of the 12th Hunger Games, she was 80 years old and the oldest Victor alive. Yet she willingly scaraficed herself for the half mad girl that was Dean's better half & Finnick's adopted little sister. ("Hell of a woman " Haymitch said full of admiration) Finnick Odair, Victor of the 65th Hunger Games, 24 years old, and devastatingly handsome.
Katniss let out a half choked sob. Effie and Dean rubbed her shoulders in concern and comfort. Haymitch chuckled darkly at her.
"Looks like you will have time to make up running out on Pretty Boy now, Sweetheart." Haymitch said scathingly smirking at her, his smirk turned into a frown once he realized he didn't have to duck a flying knife or form a retort to her vicious reply to his remark.
Katniss didn't have the energy she was too devastated by the turn of events.
District Five Tributes: Gemma Stine, the Victor of the 32nd Hunger Games, she was the Great Aunt of Vixen/Foxface. Gemma was currently 58 years old. Jared Forks, Victor of 47th Hunger Games, and he was 46 years old.
"Little fox" Katniss whispered tears quietly running down her face. No one knew what to say to comfort the three time Victor, so they said nothing.
District Six Tributes: Chasis Bosley, Victor of the 31st, morphling addict, and 62 years old. Bonnie Zeller, Victor of the 33rd, also a morphling addict, and 59 years old.
Katniss and the others stared at them in pity they looked incredibly fragile
District Seven Tributes: Johanna Mason, Victor of the 68th Hunger Games, 22 years old, and currently very pissed off. Blight Cooper, Victor of the 55th Hunger Games, 38 years old, and currently trying to calm down a swearing Johanna.
Effie tutted disapprovingly as Johanna had to be bleeped out for her vulgar language, Dean and Katniss smirked fondly, and Haymitch chuckled in approval.
District Eight Tributes: Cecilia Emery, Victor of the 60th, mother of three ("Oh no, not Cecilia" Effie cried), and she was currently 33 years old. Woof Brunner, Victor of the 18th Hunger Games, he was 74 years old and the second oldest Victor alive.
Effie knew Cecilia Emery nee Baxter through Cecilia's husband, who is the District Eight's escort and a childhood friend of Effie's. She knew how devastated Asher must be, after all she knows what its like to be the one to read out the names of someone you care about. To be the one to reap the own mother of your children would be heartbreaking.
District Nine Tributes: Whelma Moore, Victor of the 41st, and she was 49 years old. Kane Gilmore, Victor of the 54th, and he was 38 years old.
District Ten Tributes: Knox Zeno, Victor of the 44th, and he was currently 48 years old. Yoko Newsome, Victor of the 52nd, and she was currently 41.
District Eleven Tributes: Seeder Fairbanks, Victor of the 30th, and she was 61 years old. Chaff Shelton, Victor of the 45th, he was 46 years old, and missing a hand.
"God. Fuck. Why." Katniss muttered incoherently. Haymitch darkly snorted in agreement with her.
District Twelve Tributes: Katniss Everdeen, Victor of the 70th, 72nd, & 74th Hunger Games, and Katniss was the youngest Victor Tribute at 17 years old. Haymitch Abernathy, Victor of the 50th Hunger Games-Second Quarter Quell, and he was 41 years old.
"Well tomorrow is a big, big, day. You two really should be off to bed." Effie tried to say with her usual enthusiasm, but it fell flat her heart wasn't in it. She was trying not to cry. Katniss surprised the Capitol escort by giving her a hug. Effie smiled at the younger woman fondly before Katniss disappeared into her room. Dean and a very quiet Haymitch followed by going to bed also.
Katniss was feeding the horses when she felt Finnick's presence behind her. She turns around to face him to see Finnick popping a sugar cube into his mouth as he leans against a horse.
"Hello, Katniss" Finnicks says smirking at her, she's surprised by the lack of nickname. However two can play that game.
"Hello, Finnick." Katniss said just as casually, despite feeling guilty and uncomfortable at his closeness since he was half naked. Seeing him like that now reminded her of the last time she saw him.
"Want a sugar cube?" Finnick offers seductively. "They're suppose to be for the horses, but who cares? They've got years to eat sugar, whereas you and I... well, if we see something sweet, we better grab it quick." He smirked down at her flirtatiously, even wiggled his eyebrows at her. Katniss had fight the smile that wanted to appear on her face.
"No, thanks. I'd love to borrow your outfit sometime, though." Katniss said smirking back at him, even though inside she was a nervous wreck.
"I'd like to see that. Although I don't mind you in that getup, all you're missing is a leather whip, Mistress Hell Kat." Finnick leered at her.
Katniss couldn't help the bubble of laughter that escaped her. Finnick gave her a genuine smile, pleased that he made her laugh.
"About that night, I'm sorry I-"
Finnick cut Katniss off, "Don't apologize. I understand Kat, when we are forced to do what we do and after the things we've been through. Well, real intimacy can be hard, I get why you ran away Katniss. I'm not gonna lie it hurt but I understand."
"For what it's worth, I regret it. Not our time together but I wish I hadn't been a coward that night. We could have spent more time together without it being tainted by the games." Katniss said passionately
Finnick beamed at her touched and moved by her declaration. "Oh, Hell Kat you couldn't be a coward even if you tried. You're the bravest woman I've ever met. You just have trust issues but I'm breaking your walls down. You'll give into me completely, soon enough." Finnick winked at her.
"Whatever, Fishboy." Katniss said shaking her head at him, but she was grinning.
"Get a room." Haymitch snarked towards them as he walked towards them. "Come on, Sweetheart our adoring fans await."
Katniss have him a light glare but didn't say anything as the parade continued once again, Cinna's designs out-shined all the other stylists.
"Besides Finnick, who are you guys going to ally with?" Dean asked his tributes, which still felt weird to consider her mentors as.
"Aren't you suppose to be the Mentor and give us ideas and suggest strategies." Katniss teased smirking at the younger Victor, who looked unamused. Haymitch chuckled at his attempt to get Katniss to take him seriously.
"I suggest Chaff and Seeder. Maybe Johanna. I will say this, Sweetheart. Everyone is going to want to ally with you. You might be the youngest Victor but you have been in that Arena more than anyone. You'll have your pick of any them." Haymitch said bluntly.
"Allies might make it harder." Katniss said meaningfully.
"Yeah, but we'll need them to survive. Everyone knows that you're a survivor that makes you dangerous you will be the biggest target." Haymitch sighed deeply, he was feeling thirsty.
They arrived in the training room.
Haymitch and Katniss split up, he heads over to the spear station along with Brutus and Chaff.
"Hey, Sugar. Behave, Brutus is going to be mine in the Arena." Katniss said giving him a pointed look.
"You got it, Sweetheart." Haymitch smirked at her in acknowledgement.
Katniss approached the knot tying station, she was working hard on an advanced knot when someone puts their arms around her from behind. Of course it's Finnick, he easily finishes the complicated knot. Katniss watches as he picks up a length of rope and makes a noose pretending to hang himself for her amusement.
Katniss rolls her eyes at him, but she couldn't hide her smile from Finnick. She walks over to the fire station and after mastering the station, Katniss spots the District Three tributes.
Beetee and Wiress are definitely intelligent and kind hearted Victors, that Katniss wouldn't mind allying with.
Lunch was an interesting fair, all the tables had been pushed together, so all the Victors sat together. Katniss was in between Wiress and Haymitch, Finnick was across from her giving her a ravishing smirk. Chaff was seated on Haymitch's other side cracking up her grumpy Mentor with bad jokes. Everyone seemed to want to talk to Katniss, who tried to be sociable as possible while ignoring Gloss and Brutus. Vixen/Foxface's Aunt Gemma gave her a smile of acknowledgement but she kept to herself and didn't talk to anyone not even her district partner.
After lunch, Katniss went over to the edible insect station with the District Eights tributes, Woof and Cecilia. They were nice, Woof wasn't all there and Katniss wanted to bring up her meeting with the District Eight runaways but couldn't figure out how.
Gloss and Cashmere invited her to the hammock station. Gloss was smirking at her challengingly, very smug. He gave her a knowingly dark smile when Katniss politely declined. Instead, she joined Enobaria at sword training they exchanged a few words but neither one wanted to team up with each other.
Finnick and Mags joined Katniss when she was at the fishing station. Katniss really admired Mags, not just for the fact she volunteered for Annie but the fact she really was an incredible woman.
Eventually the Girl on Fire gets tired of trying to make new friends so Katniss goes to the archery range to blow off some steam. After loosing herself in shooting her targets she notices that she has drawn quite the crowd of Victors.
"Nicely done, Sweetheart. Now all the other tributes are going to ask their mentors to request for you as an ally." Haymitch drawled smirking at her.
"It's not like I expected an audience, Sugar." Katniss sassed back, a tad uncomfortable at the attention she was receiving. Haymitch chuckled amused by her discomfort.
The next couple days of training passed by quickly, the more Katniss got to know the others the harder she knew this games was going to be. She still was a nervous wreck even though she's good at hiding it, between her not being able to keep anything solid down and her endless nightmares, plus not being able to find alone time with Finnick, she was mentally exhausted. The more she saw how damaged some of them were, the more she wanted to protect them but she knew she wouldn't be able to.
Katniss had a bad feeling about her and Haymitch's scores, they both pissed off the gamemakers. Haymitch had used his private training session to heckle every single gamemaker there, he personally insulted all of them. Haymitch has very proud of himself for that since he was snarling at them as he threw knives and spears. Katniss on the other hand hanged a dummy Seneca Crane.

P.S.: To reviews I've gotten about Katniss being OOC well this an AU with Katniss being the youngest Victor of all time of course she's I've gotten reviews she's not damaged enough, which I don't understand it's been shown very clearly that she's suicidal and has commitment issues, along with trust issues. Katniss is very damaged like any other Victor however she's strong and a survivor she has a lot of people counting on her she's stubborn and self-sacrificing she's going to overcome her problems for them. Might take a while but she will eventually. Also Mags was only confirmed to be 80 during Catching Fire no where in the books did it say she won the 13th games. I've checked online it said she won from the 10-13th range in this story it's the 12th at 17 making her 80. Annie and Johanna in canon won the 70th and 71st I changed that to fit my story so now they won 68th and 69th. Every other named Victor I tried to make as canon as possible.
