Not the Last

I do not own Doctor Who or Torchwood and I am not making a profit off of this. I only own my OC.

Thank you for all your reviews, favorites, follows, and story alerts.

My whole body was in pain. It felt like I was in a sauna. Somehow I knew my temperature to be one hundred and fourteen. That's a Time Lady's brain for you though.

I knew there would be danger when I regenerated. I knew that I would have to go into a healing coma. But being a Time Lady means that I can hear the conversations around me even even when I am unconscious.

"Doctor, how long will the healing coma last?" That was Jack's voice.

"Some time from a couple hours to days." The Doctor responded. "I was in one once, at the beginning of this body. Since this was her first time regenerating I would say around a couple of days."

"But she's burning up." Jack said. I felt something cool on my forehead. That must be a wet rag. "Her temperature has been climbing for the past three hours."

"Well, this was her first time." The Doctor said again. "And she was human. That might be part of it. This has never happened before."

"Why does she still look like her human self?"

The Doctor sighed. "I don't know."

Then the sound faded out and I was overcome by pain.

I came around sometime later. My fever had gone down. Someone was holding my right hand. I squeezed it. I got a response right away. "Susan?"

"Jack." I said in a rough voice..

"Susan! How do you feel?" Jack asked.

"Better." I said. I opened my eyes to see Jack leaning over me. "Hey." I said softly.

"Hey." Jack said awkwardly.

"So… Time Lady." I said, still not sure how Jack would take it.

Jack smiled. "You still look the same."

I smiled. "The regeneration occurred when I was part human. So it took most of the energy to turn me into a full Time Lady with all their, quirks, that I didn't have enough left to change. I would have needed to use another regeneration but I kinda wanted to save them. Plus, I like this body."

"Me too." Jack said. He leaned slowly over to kiss me but before he could the door opened and The Doctor walked in. Jack jumped back into his seat.

"I saw that Jack." The Doctor said, coming over and checking on a screen above my bed. Jack and I blushed. "Good." The Doctor murmured, looking at the screen. "Good, good and good." The Doctor turned to me and said, "Seems everything is checking out fine."

I smiled. "How does it feel not being the last anymore?"

"Brilliant." The Doctor said, sitting down in a chair next to me with a sigh. "It's… it's." The Doctor said, at a loss for words.

"It's not empty anymore." I said softly.

"Yeah." The Doctor said. After a few moments, "I'm sorry. I never should have yelled at you. I knew somewhere that it was a fixed point in time which could never be altered. I just... its not every day that someone else, besides you, knows your true name."

"I understand. But I tried to stop her. I really did." I said sadly. "Bloody, stubborn archeologist."

The Doctor laughed. "Archeologists."

"Do I need a title?" I asked suddenly.

"Do you want one?"

"I don't know." I said. "I think that I might stick with my name. I feel as if it will remind me that I was once human and If I get rid of that…." The Doctor nodded in understanding.

Jack squeezed my hand. "Susan, I have to get back to work. Torchwood has a lot of cleaning up and meetings to attend with a cranky prime minister."

I nodded. "I understand. See you soon, Jack." Jack leaned down and kissed my forehead.

"Rest Susan." My eyes started to droop. "We'll see each other again." Then I fell away into a dreamless sleep.
