Gabe and Amy were walking down one of the many winding, twisting roadways in Rome. There were quaint little shops as they passed by full of shoppers, some cafes littered the street as well, and also some gelato ice cream areas that had lineups all the way out the door.
The two of them had their hands linked together as they walked down the street avoiding all the pedestrians. The sun was bright overhead, beating rays of heat down onto their heads. Amy couldn't help the smile that beamed from ear to ear as they came closer and closer to a nice quaint restaurant on the corner.
Stepping up to the greeter, standing behind his podium, Gabe got his attention instantly. "Hi, I made reservations just the other day."
"Certainly sir, we have been awaiting you. It's always a pleasure to see you back." The greeter told Gabe warmly.
"And you know it's always my pleasure Charles." Gabe said easily as he smiled at Amy. She grinned back at him and squeezed his hand in contentment as she watched the man behind the podium run through the list.
"Ahh yes here you are sir for 3'o'clock in the afternoon. You booked a booth over-looking the square by the main window; if you would just follow me." With that he pivoted elegantly on his heel and led them through the restaurant.
Although it was the middle of the day, and it seemed more of an evening place, it still didn't diminish the ambiance of the place. The red silk of the walls draping in elegant curtains around the large windows added beautiful natural light to the otherwise dark atmosphere. It was romantic, elegant, and mysterious all in one. The thick, dark wood of the furniture was not threatening but warm. Amy could tell that this place catered to the rich and famous but she tried to ignore some of the looks people gave her as Gabe pulled out her chair for her.
She smiled at him and sat down lightly in the chair as he pushed her into the table. She smiled at him as he sat down across from her and then turned her attention to Charles, who was still patiently standing beside their table.
"What may I be able to get you to start off to drink Madame and Sir?" asked Charles politely.
"Oh I'm fine right now with just water." Amy said blushing slightly.
Charles smiled at her kindly and then turned his attention to Gabe. Gabe raised a questioning eyebrow at her then turned his attention to the man. "Umm you know what Charles? Two Pepsis please, just in case my little lady friend here wants something like that soon."
Charles nodded and smiled as he walked away. Amy watched him retreat and then turned to Gabe. "Ummm isn't there some actual waitresses here that can serve us? I thought he, you know, watched the door."
Gabe gazed at her as he grabbed a menu placed on the table. He shrugged at her question. "Charles just likes to make sure I'm comfortable when I come here, and that I get superb service."
Amy frowned at this, "How does he know you anyways?"
"I give him good business," Gabe replied nonchalantly, "Besides he already knows my tastes and I've been coming here for years so it's really not that surprising.
Amy nodded and just accepted that as his explanation. He was telling the truth anyways probably. Charles came back then with the two drinks and placed them both down in front of them. Standing up straight, he gestured to a beautiful woman standing behind him. She had long waves of black hair that went down her back, olive skin, thick, dark eyebrows and beautiful chocolate coloured eyes. She really was a beauty.
"This is Lily and she will be taking care of the both of you for the duration of your stay here with us," Charles explained to them, "It was a pleasure seeing you again sir, and a wonderful surprise meeting you Madame." With that he turned on his heel and walked back towards the entrance of the restaurant.
Lily then asked them what she could get them; Gabe ordered a slice of the triple, fudge chocolate earthquake with some more chocolate sauce on the side. She ordered a modest garden salad that was the house special. Taking down the orders, and not even blinking an eye at Gabe's absurd one, she turned and strutted off, after giving them a small smile.
"Do you ever eat normal food, once in a while maybe?" asked Amy as she took a sip of her water.
Gabe, who had been staring out the window, looked back at her and grinned. "No, well, I guess I should say I used to. Quite a while ago however, it never really stuck with me. Then I helped people begin to develop sweets and you guys really started cooking with those ideas. It was amazing."
Amy couldn't help the small giggle that passed through her lips at that. Of course Gabe would give her that kind of answer, she'd seem him one time eat through a whole cake without moving. Some of the things he did were just astounding, especially his stomach.
"Hey Gabe I just realized, how long have you exactly been a trickster for?" she asked in curiosity. It had just occurred to her that they never had really talked about his parentage, or where he came from. "Like do you have siblings? What's your family like?"
Gabe's eyes seemed to have clouded over slightly, and she became worried that maybe she had asked something that wasn't prudent for this time. Before she could take back what she said though, Gabe looked up and brushed it away.
"It's not really all that interesting. I'm sure you know, but there's more than one trickster out there; we don't really communicate or get on Skype with each other, but once every blue moon or so we run into one another. As for my family it's complicated. I kind of feel like I don't belong sometimes or that maybe they just don't really understand me."
"So then what was the story about you and Kali?" she asked quietly.
Gabe put down his Pepsi, and ran his finger along the lip of the glass as he gazed off into the distance. He eventually stared at her intently, that made her shift awkwardly in her seat, but then he began.
"Kali and I were over a long time ago Amy; if you're worried about her then I strongly urge you not to be. It's like what happens with a lot of people, they find partners, they might hook up for a night or two, and then poof," he snapped his fingers in demonstration, "They're out of your life as quickly as they came in."
Amy couldn't help but feel a small amount of worry at Gabe's answer, but she brushed it off. "So then, why me?"
"Why you what?"
"Why would you even want to go out with me?" She asked him quietly. "I don't have 6 arms, or whatever she does, I'm not experienced. In fact, this is my very first date, ever. What do you see in me?"
Gabe seemed to sober up and sadden at what she had told him. Leaning over the table he propped his chin in his hand for a second. Smoothing his hand over his face he sighed and looked deeply into her own blue eyes.
"Amy it has nothing to do with experience, or something like six arms, it has everything to do with the individual," he told her in all seriousness, "I've been on this planet for a long time girl and it's rare, but it happens, you meet someone in your life, be it long or short, where you have never met someone quite like them again. For me, two of those people have always been Lance and Jazz, and then I met you."
He paused at this and Amy couldn't help the large thump her heart gave at his words. She could feel the quick pitter patter of it in her chest, and the butterflies flying around in her stomach making it do back flips and front flips.
"You're one of those kinds of people Amy, but you're different in some kind of way." She opened her mouth to rebuke him but he quickly held up a hand. "I don't mean about you being a nephilim, no it's not that. There's something about you that's just magnetic, and I don't meet many people like this. It makes me want to keep you close to my side, I want to protect you, act as your shield. I've never felt this strongly about anyone before you and this is me being the most honest I've probably ever been in my life."
She didn't know what to say. Her throat was parched and her skin felt slightly clammy from the overwhelming out pouring of emotions going on at their table. Smiling she nodded to him.
"Thanks Gabe I really needed that I think," she told him gently.
He smiled at her and nodded, "No problem girl, any time."
Sighing she stood up, and smiled gently down at him as he looked at her in confusion. "It's okay Gabe I just wanted to use the washroom to freshen up a bit. Could you maybe point me in the right direction?"
Nodding gently he pointed off through the tables to the far side of the place. "Just go through there the bathrooms will be the first rooms on your right."
"Thank you," she told him this as she began to weave her way through all the other booths and tables. She could feel his heated stare boring into her back. It sent pleasant chills up and down her spine. Brushing it off she turned a corner and came to the bathroom.
Opening the door she paused at the lavish restroom. The lighting fixture was an elegant chandelier, the floors were tiled a beautiful creamy caramel colour, the walls a warm golden honey or gold that shone under the dim lighting. Walking to the wall length mirror she looked at her reflection and padded some cold water on her cheeks. She felt hot … almost as if she were burning up. Frowning she grabbed a paper towel and lightly soaked it. Wringing it out she dabbed it around her neck and sighed as the cold towel cooled her off slightly.
She placed her hand to her forehead to feel her temperature and frowned at the hot heat waves that were radiating from her. Throwing out the paper towel she gripped the marble countertop and took deep steadying breaths. Slowly, she could feel her racing heart start to beat out a normal rhythm and her pulse slow down as a result. Looking up at the mirror she looked at her reflection. Leaning over she stared at her eyes; they seemed normal but it appeared like either flecks of red or gold were interspersed within her blue.
Stepping away from the counter in shock she grabbed her little purse and started to walk back towards the door. Taking a deep breath she walked out of the bathroom and began to make her way back towards her table.
Before she got too far however, she noticed that someone was sitting at the table that Gabe was, more specifically, in her chair. Frowning she tried to discern who it was, but she was too far from the table to really see in the lighting or hear them over the drone of the other customers. She took a long way around and stood behind a group of statues conveniently placed right behind their booth.
Standing there she pretended to fiddle with her purse to find something as she heard the conversation coming from the booth. The man who was sitting with Gabe had short black hair, a pale visage and handsome brown/black eyes. She shuddered at him, but it was the words that were uttered next that sent ice water cascading through her.
"Look I don't know how many times I have to tell you that I don't have any feelings for her," Gabe scathingly told the man sitting across from him, "Whatever you've seen, or heard, was wrong Baldur. Maybe you should go get yourself checked out."
She heard the other man snort, "We shall see about that."
"Fine you can sit there and watch me if that makes you feel any better," Gabe remarked, "However, I assure you that you have nothing to worry about. I don't care for her in that way."
Amy held up a hand to her mouth and choked down the cry that was threatening to escape through her constricting throat. Just a few short minutes ago she felt as if a volcano would have erupted in her from the overbearing heat, and her heart could have just exploded. Now … she felt as cold as ice. A strange numbness was enveloping her and chilling all her limbs.
Looking up she noticed a glowing Exit sign just in front of her and quickly walked down the hallway. She ignored any startled workers and let herself out the back entrance. Ignoring the alarm she ran down the back lane to the street. From there she weaved through the crowds of pedestrians until she was able to get down a relatively safe passage.
Walking down the uneven cobblestones she almost tripped, as well as stumbled a few times on the uneven stoning, before she came to a wide square. There were some stands set up around her and she walked through them until she came to a quiet corner with a small fountain. Sitting on the lip of it she looked down into the water. The sun which had been out in full force just earlier was now obscured by cloud cover. A cool wind was beginning to whip around the square and the splash and spatter of raindrops started to fall. Thunder shook the sky and people all around the square ran for cover, the stands started to get quickly packed up; however, within all this madness, she sat there.
Putting her face in her hands she began to cry as a downpour began all around her. Her tears mixed with the falling water until it was indistinguishable as to if she was really crying or not.
How could she have been so stupid? Or had she misread it? But it seemed that they were talking about her? Maybe she over reacted … but what if she wasn't? What if Gabe really didn't look at her that way, what if he was just trying to let her live out her little fantasy?
A part of her was saying that she was being a fool for even thinking like this, but then there was another part of her that still had doubts. As much as she wanted to banish those thoughts for good, she just couldn't quite do it yet. What was wrong with her? Was it something to do with being a nephilim? Were these huge spikes in her emotions normal? And did this answer why she felt things so much more strongly than maybe other people?
Just when she was going to go back and try and find Gabe a massive heat surge reared up from deep within her. Crying out in alarm she stumbled to the cobblestones below her gripping her chest. She squinted her eyes shut, and let out a wordless cry of pain as she heaved herself onto her hands and knees. It felt like she was burning from the inside out and she didn't know what to do. She tried to blink back desperate tears as she felt them scorch down her cheeks, leaving behind trails of fire by the feel of them.
"Gabe please I need you here right now," she whimpered out brokenly, "Where are you? I'm sorry! Gabe I need you!"
Suddenly two hands gripped her tight and pulled her onto someone's lap. Clutching the shirt in front of her, she panted against the man's chest that was gripping her. Two solid arms encircled her and she heard sweet nothings being whispered in her ear.
"Shh girl I got you, don't worry I'm here," Gabe whispered to her as the rain poured down around them, "What's wrong, Amy? Tell me what's wrong?"
She shook her head as she pulled away to make direct eye contact with him. Biting her lip she shook her head as Gabe's brow furrowed even deeper after looking into her face. Her eyes felt as if they were heating up … was that even possible?
"I-I don't know what's wrong Gabe! But it feels like I'm burning from the inside! Please help me I d-don't k-k-know wha-a-at tooo do," she stuttered out towards the end. Her speech seemed to be going as well and Gabe hushed her as she began to hyperventilate.
"It's okay Amy I'm going to help you through this just try to relax," he attempted to try and soothe her.
Suddenly, the heat inside her reached a peak and she screamed loudly from where she was nestled against his chest. A loud crash of thunder, a blinding flash of lightning, the smell of smoke and the sound of a raging inferno, and a soul piercing pain emanating from her back and she sobbed brokenly against Gabe. Finally, she slumped against him boneless as she continued crying.
"Oh shit," Gabe murmured, "Okay hang on Amy I'm going for help."
A loud scream jarred her senses; she was still cradled in Gabe's arms but she could feel they were on the floor. She couldn't muster up the amount of energy that it would take to open her eyes and whimpered feebly as Gabe's arms tightened around her protectively.
"Oh my god! Gabe what the-"
"Jazz will you please just shut up and help me out here," Gabe responded with harshly, "And where the hell is Missy?! Missy!"
The quick clacks of high heels and Missy stepped around the corner with Lance right behind her. Her mouth dropped open in shock as she took in everything. Lance behind her, quickly sucked in a breath and stared at the two on the floor.
"Jazz don't just stand there like a bloody fish out of water! Help me here!" she barked instructions at the otherwise astonished elf. "Lance boil some water, and get me some clean towels."
Nodding Lance quickly rushed out of the room. They could hear banging in the kitchen and the opening of closet doors, as he rummaged inside them. Missy quickly moved over to where Amy was lying in Gabe's arms half out of her mind with pain, trying to fight the wave of darkness that was trying to consume her senses. She vaguely realized, in her semi aware state, that she wasn't outside anymore and that rain wasn't falling on her exhausted body.
"Okay Amy stay with us here, were going to get you out of this mess," Missy told her in a brusque but otherwise gentle manner, "Just stay with us."
"What's the matter with me?" she whispered out.
"Shhh don't talk honey okay?" Missy crooned to her, "Just try to relax and let us do the work."
Before she could even answer that however, she had passed out from the pain en-gulfing her whole body, in particular her back.
