~Jealousy in the office~
Chapter 3
Mai and Naru made their way to the others, who were waiting up on the stairs in front of the mansion talking to Takumi.
"Well if it isn't sleeping beauty." Bou-san joked. Mai tried to swat his hand away as he ruffled her hair.
"I wasn't that hard to wake up." She muttered.
"I beg to differ." Naru commented as he began to glare at her. Mai stuck her tongue out at him, pouting.
"Well you just didn't do a very good job of doing it!"
Naru raised an eyebrow. "Are you saying I am incapable of waking someone?" He asked. Mai snorted teasingly.
"Obviously." She said. Then she noticed Takumi staring at the two of them. Naru glared at him.
"We need to get set up." He ground out. "Get the equipment out of the van." He addressed his team.
"Yes, Sir!" Mai mockingly saluted, moving with the others to start unpacking. Takumi stayed in front of the mansion until they came back so he could show them to their base. When everyone had some equipment, Takumi lead the way through the halls of his house, looking at Mai every so often. Although she didn't notice, Naru did.
"Here we are. This room will be your base." Takumi said as he stopped and opened the door. He let the others go in first. Taking a step into the room, Naru glared at Takumi.
"That will be all." He stated. Takumi glared back at him.
"You sure? I'm sure I could help."
Naru's glare intensified. "And I am sure that you'll just get in the way."
"I'm sure I wouldn't if I just stayed with Mai." Takumi shot back. The others watched the interaction with different expressions. Lin was, well Lin, ready to step in if needed. Ayako and Monk were amused. John was worried and Masako, well she didn't care.
As for Mai, she was mad.
"Can you two not do this?! We've been here for less than half an hour and you're already arguing." She stated, giving them her best glare. The two arguing teens glanced at Mai before looking back at each other and scowling, but they didn't bother saying anymore to each other. "Thank you." She muttered, glancing around the room. The others were staring at her, obviously wondering what was going on. Mai sighed and mouthed 'long story'. She turned back to Naru and Takumi to find that they hadn't moved and they were still glaring at one another. "Takumi, Naru's right. There's nothing you can do here, so please leave." She spoke. Takumi glanced at Mai from the corner of his eye and sighed before nodding.
"Alright, tell me if you need something."
"I doubt that." Naru stated with a glare.
"Naru!" Mai scolded with a frustrated sigh. Takumi gave one last look at the pair before leaving. Naru continued glaring at him as he left. Afterwards he turned around and walked to the equipment.
"Mai, tea." He demanded. Mai looked at him and her eye twitched.
"W-What?! But we haven't even gotten all the equipment in yet!" She wailed. Naru smirked.
"Then you better get going."
Mai looked down dejectedly and grumbled as she walked out the room with the others following behind her.
"Stupid, narcissistic jerk, making us do all the work." She muttered angrily. Monk laughed and ruffled her hair playfully as he came up beside her.
"You know how Naru is." Bou-san said. "By the way what was with Naru and that other guy?" He whispered close to her ear.
"It's a really long story." Mai replied, sighing.
"Fine, fine, but you are going to tell me soon why Naru and that guy looked like they were about to rip each other's throats out." He told her with a small grin.
"Probably would if they could." Mai muttered darkly.
Once everyone had gotten all the equipment in the house, Mai went to make her boss' precious tea as he had ordered. Grabbing the teapot she filled it with water and began to wait for it to boil. She leaned against the counter as she did.
"What is with those two..." She murmured to herself, still trying to figure what exactly got Naru and Takumi so worked up in that minute alone in the base and was surprised neither of them came out without a scratch. She shook her head. "Those two are impossible..."
"He's mine..." A voice hissed. Mai froze at the eerie voice before she looked around cautiously.
"Hello?" She called out. Maybe it was just someone who lives here? Perhaps it was Takumi's mother...or his sister?
"He's mine!" The voice rasped again.
At this point Mai was beginning to get freaked out. The whistle on the teapot suddenly went off causing Mai to jump. She spun around quickly, placing her hand to her heart. She took it off the burner and leaned against the counter once again, trying to calm down.
"What was that?" Mai asked herself, still a little freaked out. After a few moments—once she calmed down enough—she began to finish making Naru's tea. Maybe it had just been my imagination. She tried to convince herself. Mai picked up the cup and slowly began to walk to base again. Her walk to base was silent, but as soon as she was in hearing distance of the base, she was able to hear Bou-san and Ayako fighting. Mai smiled to herself and hurried to base. Stepping inside the room, she walked over to Naru and handed him his tea.
"Here you go, Naru." Mai said smiling. Naru accepted it as he stared at her with a steadily gaze.
"What's wrong?" He asked. The cameras aren't up yet so Naru doesn't know anything... Mai said to herself.
"What do you mean? I'm fine." She replied nervously. Naru narrowed his eyes as he continued staring at her.
"You know I know you better than that Mai..." He chided. Then he went with a different approach. "Did Takumi do anything to you?" He asked darkly.
"Takumi? What does he have to do with the gh-" She asked before covering her mouth. Her boss had already caught onto her though.
"Mai." He warned. Mai gulped.
"W-well you see..." She stuttered. The others stopped what they were doing and glanced over at the two with interest.
"Tell me what happened, Mai." Naru ordered as he sat his tea aside and stood up.
"I-I don't even know if it was a ghost or not!" She explained nervously.
"Woah, wait!" Monk exclaimed as he stalked over to them. "We haven't even been here two hours and you already got attacked?!"
"I wasn't attacked." Mai huffed. "I just heard some voices."
"What did they say?" Naru asked her.
"Well it said 'He's mine' twice..." Mai trailed off, looking from Bou-san to Naru.
"Great, that just means it's going to attack Mai. It's inevitable!" Monk cried.
"Hey! How come you assume that I'm going to get attacked just because I heard a couple of voices?!" She exclaimed, crossing her arms defiantly.
"Because it always happens, Mai." Ayako commented. Mai groaned, collapsing onto the nearby couch.
"It does not!" She argued.
"Everyone get to work." Naru ordered before anything else could be said. Mai pouted before picking up a camera. She just sat down from getting Naru's tea, hearing some weird voices, and bringing in the equipment. Couldn't she at least rest for a few minutes?
"Stupid narcissistic jerk! Making us do all the work." She muttered. Everyone grabbed a camera and a microphone before heading out the door.
"If we're lucky we might capture that voice you heard." Bou-san said, walking down the halls of the house. Deciding to split up since it would be faster, it was only Monk and Mai at the moment.
"Like I said before, I'm not even sure if it was a ghost or not..."
Bou-san laughed. "Mai, this is you we're talking about here." He stated. "The chances it was a ghost is pretty high." Mai pouted as they came to stop and began to set up a camera.
"What's that supposed to mean?" She huffed.
"Just face it, you're a ghost magnet." He said hopelessly. "Well...basically just a trouble magnet, really." He added.
"I am not!" Mai argued, picking up the next camera and walking towards the door to the next room.
"Uh-huh, sure. Then why does Naru always have to save you?"
Mai blushed and stuttered, "H-he doesn't always save me." Monk just gave her a look that said 'yeah, right' and rolled his eyes.
"By the way, since we'll alone and we'll being setting up the cameras for a while...what's the deal with Naru and that other guy? And don't think you can get out of it this time, Mai." He chided while wagging his finger. Mai sighed.
"Okay, okay. They only met yesterday, but they were at each other's throats from the beginning. Especially when Takumi started flirting with me. Heck, Naru threatened to call the police for him not getting out of the office!" Mai explained, setting up the next camera. The monk's eyes widened in interest.
"So they're fighting over you..." He mumbled.
"WHAAT?!"
Monk covered his ears. "Jeez Mai, not so loud!"
"That's just not possible. This is Naru we're talking about here." Mai denied.
"Well they are, get over it. Naru's probably just jealous. I mean I've never seen him act like that to a client before and that other guy obviously likes you." Monk said thoughtfully as he walked away, waiting for her to follow.
"Naru? Jealous? Ha! When all of hell freezes over!" Mai declared, following after him slowly.
"Oh come on, Mai! You know it's so true! I bet Naru even said something to you yesterday after the clients had left." Monk guessed, not knowing he was spot on.
"I-I have no idea what you're talking about." Mai blushed, staring at her feet. Monk rolled his eyes again.
"I can only hope this case makes those two move forward...somewhere." He mumbled quietly to himself. Mai looked up at him.
"Did you say something?"
"Hm? Oh, no. Anyways let's hurry and finish setting these up," He gestured to the camera. "before Naru has a fit."
"Chances are he already is. I bet as soon as we walk in he'll be like 'Mai, tea'." Mai said doing her best interpretation of Naru's voice while trying not to laugh. Monk on the other hand was doing everything but holding back his laughter. Somewhere along the line though. Naru had left base to look for them because they weren't responding over the walkie-talkie.
"If you have time to go around laughing then you have time to work." He stated coldly. The duo immediately froze at hearing their boss' voice.
"Yes, Sir..." Mai mumbled sullenly.
"Jeez, no need to be so harsh, Naru." Bou-san spoke. Naru directed his glare to the monk. He shivered under Naru's gaze. "Okay, okay sheesh man! We're just messing around. The camera's are all set up."
"Good." Naru glanced at Mai. "Now get back to base."
Mai sighed following after Naru and Bou-san absent-mindedly. Why that stupid narcissistic tea-loving jerk! How rude can you get!? We were only laughing! She ranted in her head. Mai glanced up and did a double take when she saw Monk looking back and forth between her and Naru, giving her winks. Shooting him a quick glare, she turned away blushing red. Seriously, what was he thinking?! Naru didn't actually like her... Not to mention if he noticed the winks that, to her defense, were not very subtle.
"So Naru..." She heard Monk began slyly. Mai groaned; she was going to kill him.
"What Takigawa?" Naru snapped coldly. But the man in question surprisingly wasn't fazed at all.
"Why exactly," He glanced at Mai quickly before looking back at Naru. "do you hate this Takumi so much for?" Mai sent him glares while clenching her fists. Yup, he's dead.
Naru raised an eyebrow. "I don't see why that's any of your business."
The monk pouted. "But you don't just hate someone for no reason." He whined. Naru only smirked.
"Hey look! We're back!" Mai exclaimed, walking into base. Monk narrowed his eyes as he watched Mai skip in while Naru followed behind her. He decided that he would find out why Naru would hate Takumi so much later. For now, he had an old hag to annoy. As the next hour passed, they had set up everything and took temperatures in all the rooms. Mai and the others were sitting in the base messing around. Fortunately for Naru, Takumi hadn't come back since they first got there. Mai laughed as Ayako hit Bou-san for calling her old again.
"What did you say to me?!" Ayako seethed as he grabbed the front of the monk's collar and started shaking him.
"A-Ayako, T-Takigawa, there's no need to fight." John stuttered, trying to break up the fight. Bou-san wasn't being much help either.
"You heard me. Or maybe you're getting so old that your hearing stopped working."
"I wouldn't say that again, old man, or you're going to be losing a small part of you that you need." She threatened as she glared harshly at him.
"Why? Are you taking it cause you lost yours?" The monk joked, grinning. Ayako's eye twitched as she turned red from anger before she strongly hit him on the head. "Ouch! What was that for you old lady?!"
"You did deserve it, Monk." Mai intervened. Ayako grinned in triumph and they all started laughing. They abruptly stopped when they heard a loud 'snap' of a book closing though.
"Surely you have better things to be doing than messing around." Naru said with a glare.
"Well you're the one who hasn't give us anything to do." Ayako retorted, looking at her nails.
"Well then find something to do. Or are you incapable of thinking for yourself?" Naru sneered in reply, his infamous glare positioned at her.
"Oh! I know!" Mai exclaimed, obviously having of thought of something.
"Oh? And what exactly did your small amount of brain cells manage to think up?" Naru inquired. Mai glared at him before answering.
"We should be doing interviews, right?" Naru blinked before scowling. That means Takumi will need to be interviewed.
"Why that's right, Mai!" Monk grinned, sensing what Naru was thinking. "Let's go find Takumi and bring him here...for the interview of course!"
Naru glared at the monk. "Very well. If you must, let's make this quick." He gritted out, already getting worked up. Satisfied, Monk grabbed Mai by the wrist and began to drag her to the door.
"W-Wait! Bou-san! Hold on!" Mai stammered as she was dragged out the door.
"Why?"
"Because I don't appreciate being dragged around, that's why!" Mai huffed. Monk sighed and released her wrist.
"Well sorry. I guess I just got a little carried away." He apologised, walking down the hall.
"Why do you want to go get Takumi so badly?" She asked in confusion. Bou-san grinned.
"You'll find out soon enough." Mai raised an eyebrow but left it alone. For now.
Naruisawesome: Yay! Third chapter finished!
MzShellSan: I wonder how the interview is going to go... Naru's not going to be able to stop glaring at him to do anything.
Naruisawesome: I know right?
MzShellSan: Yup! Please review!
Naruisawesome & MzShellSan: Thanks for all of your reviews too!
