~Jealousy in the Office~
Chapter 14
Everything stayed relatively calm throughout the rest of the afternoon—spiritual wise anyways. The SPR team started their loudness again when Monk began complaining about dinner.
"But I'm hungry!" He whined. "Mai, you're hungry too right?!"
"Yes, but at least I'm not whining like a baby." Mai shot him a glare. She may or may not still be mad at the others for not telling her what they were talking about her. The monk pouted.
"Oh come on, Mai. I'm not that bad." He complained. A chorus of 'yes, you are' was heard all around. Bou-san sighed. "Fine then, but can we at least-" Whatever he was about to say was cut off by a loud ring. Everyone's eyes turned to Naru as he started to pull out his phone.
"Yes?" He asked. Mai mentally rolled her eyes. Typical Naru. Couldn't even answer a phone like a normal person.
"Hey Boss...ah, so bad news." Yasu's troubled voice came through after Naru pushed the speaker button. The young boss narrowed his eyes at the phone.
"Go on."
"Here's the problem...I couldn't find anything on the house."
"What do you mean you couldn't find anything?" Mai asked from where she was sitting.
"Exactly what I said, my dear little Mai." Yasu stated.
"So there was nothing on the house or any leads on who the spirit might be?" Naru classified. Yasu sighed.
"No...I can't believe it either! I've searched all day and no suspects of anyone who could be the ghost. Literally. No one even died in that house or the property! Which is really weird considering how long ago the house was built."
"Was there anything suspicious in the family files or history?"
"Ah! Well there wasn't too much, but I did find a couple of things." The college student informed. Naru's head snapped up.
"Continue." He stated.
"Well, it seems that when..ahh..oh, Takumi was five years old, his father took custody of him and immediately left his wife." Yasu relayed to the young boss. Mai watched as Naru's hand came to his chin in his 'thinking face'. She hid a smile. That meant he was interested now.
"Is that all, Yasuhara?" He asked. Everyone heard shuffling noises of paper in the background.
"The only other thing is that the mother died. Apparently she committed suicide."
Mai instantly froze and flashbacks from her dream came back to her. Her shoulders began to shake slightly. Was that...was that Takumi's mother? Could she really be the cause of this? Mai glanced down at her hand and slowly lifted it. When I touched Takumi's cheek...all I had felt was love for him...but it wasn't a romantic type of love... But how was that possible? The mother didn't die in this house so how? Was she attached to Takumi and his father then? Mai thought back to the anger she felt towards Lin. Or maybe she hates the father and is attached to Takumi. She was so angry and lonely in her dream, but also incredibly sad...that had to be it then.
While she was thinking she had—unintentionally—caught Naru's attention. He had watched as her facial expressions changed every few seconds.
"Mai, what is it that you're thinking so hard about?" He inquired. His assistant jumped slightly at his voice. Her face flushed slightly.
"O-oh, u-um...nothing!" She stuttered.
"Don't lie to me, Mai."
The brunette looked away. "I don't know what you're talking about." She denied. Naru let out a sigh. Why did this girl have to be so stubborn?
"Well you were obviously thinking about something otherwise you wouldn't have had such a serious look on your face, idiot." When Mai didn't yell at him for insulting her, he grew slightly worried. What could possibly have her so perplexed? She always yelled at him...so something was definitely wrong. "Mai, tell me." He demanded. Mai sighed, but she kept her gaze down.
"It's just...when I did that thing back at the place it didn't feel like a normal love, more like a motherly love. And I just..." The brunette trailed off, slightly embarrassed and saddened. Her boss stared at her for a few moments before nodding in understanding.
"I believe we know who the spirit is now. Thank you for your help, Yasuhara." He said.
"No problem, Boss. Don't miss me too much my love~!" Yasu exclaimed, directing the final part to a blanching monk. "And goodbye my dear little Mai! I'll see you when you come back!" Before he could continue Naru ended the call, glaring at the phone. Mai pouted at him.
"You couldn't wait until I said bye?" She asked. Her young boss shot her a glare.
"We're here to work. Not to waste time." Mai only rolled her eyes while everyone else snickered.
"So what do we do now Naru?" Ayako asked.
"Considering it's getting late..." He sighed. "We'll continue everything tomorrow morning. Early tomorrow morning." He glared at three certain people. Naturally, said people shrunk back from the glare. Sighing, Mai got up and stretched. When she did her shirt rose up to her bellybutton. Monk, ever the protective brother, saw it and pulled her shirt back down.
"Hey, hey, don't you think you need a longer shirt, little missy?!" He asked. Looking down at her shirt, she tugged slightly at the ends and then shrugged.
"Does it really matter?" She asked. Naru couldn't help but clench his fists slightly. If all of her shirts were that way then there was good chance that every single moment a new guy was seeing her stomach. She definitely needs a new wardrobe. He thought.
"I told you to let me take you shopping." Ayako stated. Mai pouted.
"Not a chance in hell." She grumbled, clearly remembering the last time she had taken Mai shopping. She shivered at the thought. It certainly hadn't been fun. "I don't need new clothes. Mine are just fine." She told her.
"Mai, surely even you can tell when your clothes are getting too small." Naru scoffed. She shifted her gaze on to her boss before glancing down at her clothes. What was wrong with them?!
"I brought them like this..."
Monk gaped at his 'little sister'. "You did what?!" He yelled. Mai flinched at the loudness of his voice.
"It was cheap and comfortable." She mumbled, slightly taken aback at how they were reacting. "Guys, seriously, what's the big deal?!"
John coughed slightly, his face pink. "Mai, it is slightly inappropriate." The petite girl blinked in shock. I-Inappropriate...? Everyone face palmed at her idiocy. Mai looked down, biting her lip. How was it inappropriate? They never commented on her clothes before...and surely Naru would've said something a lot sooner than this if her dressing like this to work was 'inappropriate'.
Masako scoffed at the girl. She was such an idiot. It sometimes worried the medium that the girl was so stupid. Not that she cared or anything.
Naru closed his eyes in slight annoyance. Great, now all he wanted to do was make Mai wear his black long coat and hide her so no one else would see her. The thought of how cute she would look wearing his coat crossed his mind. He didn't even realize he was staring at his assistant as he did. Mai's face flushed when she felt Naru's gaze on her.
"What?" She demanded. "Do you hate my clothes too?!" Her young boss didn't even blink as he snapped out of his thoughts. He smirked as he recalled what she said though. Mai eyed him warily. She did not like the smirk on his face. "Well?!" She demanded. Although...I'm not really sure I want to know what he's thinking right now...
"You really want to know what I think of your clothing choices?"
"...As long as it isn't rude." She replied. Naru mentally rolled his eyes at his assistant. "You know what, never mind. All I want to do is eat." Mai quickly changed her mind. Bou-san jumped up.
"I call dibs!" He stated, making his way to the door. "Come on, Mai, let's go ask your boyfriend if we can have some food instead of going somewhere to get it." Mai blinked. Boyfrie- Is he talking about Takumi!? Her face flushed red, more from anger than anything.
"On second thought, I'm not that hungry."
"Now, now, there's no need to be embarrassed, Mai!" Monk told her grinning. The brunette shot him a glare.
"I'm far from embarrassed." She grumbled, crossing her arms. Naru scowled at the monk's comment also. He didn't want to think about Takumi, much less his advances towards his Mai. Why did that stupid monk have to keep bringing him up?
Sensing the atmosphere, John got up. "I'll go with you." He volunteered. Monk sighed.
"Fiiine, I guess we'll have to go and get take-out!" He grumbled. Mai visibly relaxed shooting John a grateful look. He smiled back at her in return. Soon, both men had left to go get some food for them all. The others grinned when Mai's stomach rumbled. With a blush, she wrapped her arms around her stomach in embarrassment.
"Not hungry, huh?"
Mai glared. "Oh shut it." She mumbled. Crossing her arms, she looked away. She basically ignored everyone until Monk and John came back with their food. As they entered the room, Mai couldn't help but race over to them. She grabbed one of the bags from them and immediately ran back to her seat. A certain monk laughed at her.
"Eager I see." He commented.
"Oh, like you're not?!" She shot back.
"She has a point old man." Ayako smirked. She shifted her gaze on to the man only to find him already eating like Mai. Shaking her head, she sighed and decided to eat like everyone else.
It was a few more hours after dinner before everyone went to bed. Naturally Naru sat in base watching the monitors. He wasn't going to fall asleep for a few more hours yet. He didn't notice it at first, but he was watching the camera facing Mai's room more than the rest. He sighed. It had barely been fifteen minutes since everyone had left to their rooms and he was already worrying about that girl. Not that it was unjustified, somehow she always ended up in danger.
Why does she always have to worry me? Naru mentally groaned, rubbing his temples. Looking back up he trained his eyes back on the monitors. He narrowed his eyes into slits when he saw Mai coming out of the girl's room. What was she doing this time? From the looks of it she still hadn't changed into her night clothes yet, which she just so happened to be carrying in her arms. Putting two and two together, he rolled his eyes. Only she would worry about waking those idiots up. She was too kind for her own good sometimes. Besides didn't she remember she wasn't suppose to go anywhere without him—or Lin?! He pinched the bridge of his nose in annoyance. Did she have the memory of a goldfish?
Well, it would explain a few things. He mused silently. He leaned back in his chair, never taking his eyes off the monitor. He may not be there physically with her, but he was still going to keep an eye on her. Knowing her, there was a good chance something would happen and she would get herself hurt. After all, there was a spirit after her.
A few minutes passed, and then a few more. No sign of the petite brunette. He rolled his eyes. Surely she couldn't take that long in the bathroom. He pushed himself up from his seat and walked over to the base door. He might as well go check on her then just to be safe rather than sorry.
