Chapter 32.5
Thane was leaving the elevator after a vigorous exercise routine when he nearly collided with someone.
"Excuse me," he quickly said, looking up to see who it was. "Ah, you must be the newest member. Samara, correct? You have my sincere apologies."
"It is quite all right. You must be Thane. I was intrigued to hear that a drell would be willing to join this crusade. Your people are not often seen off the hanar home world or without the presence of a hanar."
"My people owe much to the hanar. We try to repay that debt in any way we can."
"And how did you come to be here?"
"Cerberus believed Shepard find a use for my unique qualifications. I am… trained in covertly removing problematic persons."
"You are an assassin. That is a dangerous profession. It is even more dangerous to admit it to a justicar."
Thane's lips quirked into a small smile. "I am hardly the only one that should be wary of you. I imagine you haven't met Jack yet."
She had not, but Samara knew who he spoke of. She was the criminal, convicted of many crimes including numerous murders.
"I believe everyone aboard this ship has some secret they wish to keep from you," the drell continued. "The only one who is truly clean would be Grunt, the krogan, for he was only 'born' a mere month ago. Tali'Zorah also seems too innocent to have done something worthy to draw your ire, but I've learned assumptions should never be taken as fact."
"A wise lesson. Do not worry. Shepard has deemed all of you worthy of this endeavor, and I am sworn to him for the duration of the mission. You have nothing to fear until after I'm released and should only begin to worry if I have witnessed you perform an act the Code dictates is unacceptable and requires my action."
He nodded. "Are you willing to continue this conversation in life support? I wish to know more about how an asari justicar joined our odd band, and it is difficult to get to know someone in the middle of a hallway."
Samara knew she didn't have any pressing matters at the moment, and the conversation she with Shepard only an hour ago reminded her how much she missed conversing with others. And Thane seemed to be an honorable sort, even with his less than honorable profession.
"I will join you. I must first admit. I am out of practice with talking with others. A justicar's life is solitary."
"An assassin's, as well. We'll work through our awkwardness together then," Thane said with a smile and led Samara to the room he was temporarily calling home.
