Chapter 33: Pains and Worrying
Edward rushed out of bed and over to me.
"My water broke!" I gasped.
"Just stay calm, let's get you changed into something dry!" He said rushing over to the closet.
"Edward, are we ready?" I asked.
"I think so, the nursery is set, we have the over night bag with the things you will need or want. I will call Renee and Phil here in a minute, um, um. What else?" He asked.
"I need clothes." I said.
"Right clothes" He said, he came back out with another pair of pajama pants.
"Ohhh." I groaned as the first pain came.
I made my over to the bed and leaned on it. Edward came over and rubbed my back, I took deep breaths to help the pain.
"I'm going to go call Renee and then tell Carlisle your water broke, are you going to be okay?" He asked.
I nodded, "I think so."
He kissed my forehead before heading out of the room. I took a deep breath as I grabbed the pajama pants from the bed, I slid the wet pants off and worked on getting the dry ones on which was a chore in itself. I ended up having to sit on the bed and put one leg in and then another then stand up and slide it up. I picked up my phone and texted Jacob that I was in labor, that's when Edward walked back in.
"Renee and Phil are getting the first plane out right now, Charlie is called, and Carlisle is getting ready. Would you like to go to the hospital now? Or wait til the contractions are about five minutes apart?" He asked.
"Are we able to wait?" I asked.
"We can if you want too." He said.
"Uh, I think I want to be at the hospital in case something happens." I told him.
"Okay, but nothing is going to happen." He told me.
"Is the bag in the car?" I asked.
"Yes, and the car is running so I am ready whenever you are." He said.
I looked at him and my eyes teared up.
"What?! What's wrong?!" He asked rushing over to me.
"We're having a baby!" I smiled and sobbed at the same time.
He smiled and hugged me, "Yes we are."
I hissed as a contraction ripped through me.
"Okay, let's go." He said.
So there we were in the car almost twenty minutes later driving to the hospital. I was a bundle of nerves as Edward and I went over the list of things we had done to make sure we were ready. I was pretty sure he was as nervous, if not more, as I was. He kept gripping the steering wheel so hard that his knuckles turned white, I finally grabbed one of his hands and held it. He looked over at me and smiled.
"Edward." I said.
"Contraction?" He asked.
"No. I want you to promise me something." I said.
"If this is about you or the baby possibly dying I am not discussing it, because it won't happen." He said getting tense.
"No, it's not about that. Well, not really." I said.
"Okay, what is it?" He asked.
"I don't want a hysterectomy. So if there is a complication somewhere down the road, I want you to promise me that you will make sure they do whatever they can to save my uterus." I told him.
"I promise." He said squeezing my hand.
"Okay." I said.
We pulled up to the hospital and found a parking spot, Edward jumped out of the car before running over to my door. He opened it and told me to stay put, like I was going to go anywhere, while he grabbed the bag from the back seat.
"Okay, let's go have a baby!" He said smiling offering me his hand.
I took it as we walked into the hospital.
"Bella!" Jerry said.
"Hi Jerry." I said.
"Are you- Are you having the baby?!" He asked seeing Edward with an over night bag.
"Yeah, it's real this time." I said.
"Congratulations! Good luck!" He said.
"Thank you!" I said.
"Take care of her Edward!" He said sternly.
"Always." Edward smiled.
…
We got settled into our private room, set up by Carlisle, it was gorgeous. It was like someones bedroom! The walls were white with blue trim around the middle of the wall that went all the way around the room. There were two windows that over looked a local park where kids could play and parents could sit on benches or take a walk. Edward set the bag down on the chair next to the bed before helping me out of my clothes and into the lovely hospital gown.
"Okay." He said putting my clothes into the bag.
I looked around the room, everything was so calm right now. I had a feeling though once things started to pick up it would be a whole different story.
"Does the family know?" I asked getting into bed.
"They do, but they are going to stay at the house until things pick up. Then they will wait in the waiting room until the baby is born and you are all settled in." He told me.
"Sounds good." I said.
Before we could go on a contraction came, Edward rushed over to the bed and grabbed my hand. A nurse walked in and smiled as she started to get things set up. She wrote something on the chart while she waited for the contraction to end which didn't take long.
"Hi. My name is Cindy and I will be your night nurse!" She said.
"Hi, I'm Bella and this is Edward my husband, which you probably already know who he is..." I said blushing because I forgot he worked here.
She just smiled, "You're fine."
Edward smoothed my hair down.
"Okay, first off we need to get you on the baby monitor." She said.
I nodded as she fiddled around with the machines, once she had it hooked up she documented the heart rate and smiled at us.
"Everything looks good so far! You have nothing to worry about!" She said.
"I've had a rough pregnancy so far, make note of that. I have pre-eclampsia and placental abruption." I told her.
"All nurses that are scheduled to work with you are well informed about your case. So you just focus on having that beautiful baby and we will take care of the rest!" She reassured.
"Okay." I said taking a deep breath.
A Few Hours Later
"Breathe." Edward coached.
"It hurts!" I cried.
"I know." He said.
I glared at him.
"Okay, I don't know. What I do know is that the contraction will be ending... now." He said.
I took deep breath relaxed on the bed.
"Are we ready?" I asked.
"We are." He said.
"What if we aren't? What if we don't have the things he or she needs when we get home?" I asked, worrying.
"Honey, if he or she is missing something, I will be glad to go get it for them." He told me.
"What if something happens?" I asked.
"Nothing will happen, everything will be fine." He told me.
I started to tear up.
"Hey, hey! What's wrong?" He asked.
"What if- What if I'm not a good mom?" I sobbed.
He got off his chair and sat on the edge of the bed.
"You will be an amazing mom. You already are!" He said.
"I am?" I sniffled.
"Bella! Are you kidding me? I've seen the way you talk to your stomach and I swear my heart expanded with pride. From the moment you found out you were pregnant you have done nothing but make sure the baby was safe, and had a place to sleep, and you have done so much to make sure we are ready! You amaze me every day with how much you know about our child already, if anyone is unprepared it's me!" He told me.
I looked up at him and smiled, he leaned down and kissed me softly.
"I love you." He whispered.
"I love you too- OW!" I cried out.
He grabbed my hand.
…
Edward's POV
"Hey."
I looked up to see Carlisle standing above me with a cup of coffee.
"I figured you may need some caffeine," He said handing it to me and sitting down, "Looks like we may be in for a long night."
He smiled, "Yeah."
"You okay?" He asked.
I was sitting on the bench in front of the hospital.
"Yeah, just needed some air." I said.
He smiled and nodded.
"I was so nervous the day we brought you home. It was a whole new experience, normally when you bring your child home they are a newborn baby. You weren't, and your mom handled it like a champ. Me on the other hand, I had no clue your about your likes, dislikes, hobbies, what food you ate, nothing. It was almost like you were my first child in a way." He explained.
"Everything turned out okay though." I said.
"No, it didn't turn out okay." He said.
I looked at him weird.
He laughed, "Relax. It didn't turn out okay because it turned out amazing. I know I've told you this countless times growing up Edward, but now that you are becoming a father I need to tell you it again. Blood or not, you are my son. You've brought so much happiness to your mother and I, to this family, and I could not pick a better son to have."
"Dad," I started, I saw his eyes get misty, "I am the one who should be saying thank you."
"Why's that?" He asked.
"Because, you saved me. You saved me from a man who could have killed me that night. You have helped me in so many ways growing up, and I am so grateful. You put up with so much when I first developed my disorder, then you put up with it again when it came back. You have been an amazing father and I cannot thank you enough for taking me in when you didn't have too." I explained getting all misty eyed as well.
Carlisle clapped me on the back and smiled.
"Our wives would laugh at us right now." He laughed.
"Probably." I said.
We walked back into the hospital, Carlisle's hand on my shoulder, and headed back to the room. Alice stayed with her while I took a short break to clear my head of all anxiety. I walked back into the room to find Bella in the middle of a contraction.
"Breathe." Alice coached.
Bella took deep breaths to try to ease the pain of contractions. I walked back up to the bed and took Alice's spot, I grabbed Bella's hand and kissed it.
"You're back." She gasped.
"Yes, sorry I left you love." I said.
"It's fine." She said smiling a little bit.
She looked so beautiful, hair in a messy bun, she had sweat on her forehead, and for once no make up. I'm surprised Alice allowed no make up, but when your having a baby I don't think make up is necessary.
"Ow!" She hissed.
"What?!" I asked.
"Nothing, just kicked me really hard." She said.
I smiled.
A Couple Hours Later
Bella's POV
"Are you sure you don't want the epidural?" Edward asked.
"Yes!" I gasped.
The contractions were getting closer and closer every time, but at least we made it this far with no complications. I breathed as this one came to an end, I looked at the ceiling as Edward wiped away the sweat from my forehead.
"Thank you." I said.
"For what?" He asked.
"Being here with me, taking care of me." I said.
"I wouldn't have it any other way." He smiled.
He brushed his hand across my forehead and a look of concern crossed his face.
"What?" I asked.
"You're burning up." He said.
"I am?" I asked.
"Do you have a head ache?" He asked going to get a thermometer.
"Yeah, but I just assumed it was from the contractions." I told him.
"Bella you need to tell me things, even if they are little." He told me.
He put the thermometer in my mouth and waited for it to beep.
"103.." He mumbled.
He rushed over and grabbed the things needed to check my blood pressure, I was starting to get scared.
"Edward?" I asked.
"When did the nurse give you that medication for your blood pressure?" He asked.
"A little over an hour ago why?" I asked.
He picked up the hospital phone and told the nurse to page Dr. Cullen to the room and tell him to hurry.
"Edward." I said tears coming to my eyes.
"It's okay." He said.
"Is there something wrong with the baby?" I asked.
"No, I am just concerned with the fever that's all." He said.
I didn't believe him, he was worried about something else.
…
"Keep this ice pack on you at all times." Carlisle said.
"Okay." I said.
I felt like I was in an ice box. I had my ice pack on my head, they had fans, and the air was turned all the way down it felt like.
"We need to get that temp down to normal." He said.
"I'll try my ha-AH!" I screamed.
Edward grabbed my hand and squeezed it, I hissed in pain as it seemed stronger then the rest.
"Almost over." Edward coached.
"It hurts!" I cried.
"I kn- I understand." He said changing his answer when I glared him.
I breathed as the contraction ended.
"Has anyone called Renee? To check if she is coming?" I asked.
"Yes, she was able to get a flight. She'll be here soon." He told me.
"Okay." I said.
"But she can't be in here if she's going to stress you out, before or after you have the baby." He told me.
"I know, I don't want her here if she is going to cause any trouble." I told him.
A Few Hours Later
There was a knock on the door.
"Come in!" I said.
Renee and Phil walked into the room.
"Hi!" Renee said.
"Hi mom." I said.
"How are you doing?" She asked coming over to hug me.
"Okay, I had a fever a little bit ago, and I'm only dilated to about five." I told her.
"This baby wants to take it's time I guess." Phil said.
"I guess." I giggled.
"Where is Edward?" Renee asked.
"Right here." Edward said walking back in with the ice chips I sent him for.
"Hello!" Renee said hugging him.
Everyone said hellos and hugged before Edward got back over to me with my ice chips.
"Dad came in while you were gone." I told Edward.
"Yeah, what did he say?" He asked.
"I'm at five and my temp is back to normal." I told him.
"Good." He smiled.
I tensed as a contraction hit, Edward grabbed my hand and squeezed it. I looked at him and we focused on breathing. Once the contraction ended I relaxed and took a deep breath.
"Fun aren't they?" Rene asked.
"A blast." I said.
All of a sudden the baby's heart monitor alarm started to go off, I gasped and looked at it as the red light flashed.
"Edward!" I cried out.
He rushed over to the button that was on the wall to call the nurses and slammed his fist against it. He rushed back over to me and held my hand.
"What's going on?! What's wrong with the baby?!" I cried.
"Nothing is wrong, everything will be fine!" He said kissing my forehead.
Carlisle ran in along with several nurses.
"Dad!" Edward gasped.
He pushed Edward, Renee, and Phil out of the way as he ran over to me.
"Are you okay? Any pain?!" He asked.
"No!" I said shaking my head.
He checked my blood pressure, heart rate, the babies heart rate.
"I think I know what is happening." He said.
"What? Is it bad?" I asked.
He unstrapped my heart monitor from my stomach and repositioned it until the alarm stopped going ff and re-strapped it to me.
"Baby repositioned itself is all." He said smiling.
I let my head fall on the pillow and looked at the ceiling. Edward leaned over and kissed my forehead softly.
"Everything is okay." He whispered.
I nodded.
…
"Eight centimeters." Carlisle said.
I winced as he removed his hand from inside me, which was my very least favorite part of labor.
"It won't be long now." He said.
"You think I'll be able to deliver normally?" I asked.
"I don't see any complications at this point that would tell me otherwise." He said.
I was worried about the bleeding, a little bit before he came to check me I began to bleed. It wasn't a lot but it was enough to cause some concern from dad and Edward.
"Dad?" I asked.
"Yeah?" He said.
"The baby is okay, right?" I asked.
"Yeah. He or she is fine. Why do you ask?" He asked.
"I'm worried about the bleeding earlier." I told him.
He sighed and sat on my bed, "The baby is fine, you were bleeding because I think the placenta tore away from the uterus again. However, I do not believe it is cause for concern because you are at eight centimeters already. If you were only at five then it would be, I would have suggested you be put on pitocin to increase labor, but there is no need to worry now."
I nodded.
He kissed my forehead before heading out to check on his other patients. It didn't take long for a contraction to hit, Edward grabbed my hand and squeezed it. They were getting closer and closer together and it sucked.
"You're doing amazing." Edward said.
"Glad someone thinks so." I hissed.
There was a knock on the door, I looked up as Charlie walked in the room with a dozen of bright colorful daisies.
"Dad!" I said.
"Hi Bells. Sorry it took me so long to get here, work was not letting me go." He said.
He walked over and gave me a hug and a kiss before handing me the flowers.
"They're beautiful." I said.
"I'll go get a vase." Edward said giving me a kiss on the forehead.
I smiled.
"I'm glad you like them." He said.
I was about to reply when a contraction hit. Charlie tensed up not knowing what to do.
"What can I do?" He asked.
"Hand!" I hissed.
He grabbed my hand and let me squeeze it. I closed my eyes and tried to breathe as the contraction got worse. I felt the pain slowly ease as it completely went away, I slowly let go of Charlie's hand and half smiled at him.
"Sorry." I said.
"Don't be, I'm here when you need me. Always." He smiled brushing a strand of hair back.
"Thanks daddy." I said tearing up.
Edward walked back in with a vase and Carlisle following.
"How is my daughter doing?" Carlisle asked.
"She is wishing she took the epidural." I said.
He smiled.
"Other than that, everything okay?" He asked.
"Yeah. I'm fine." I said.
"Okay, I'll be back soon to check you." He said giving me a kiss on the forehead.
"I'm a lucky girl." I said.
"Why's that?" Carlisle asked.
"I have two amazing dads." I said.
"As long as you know Charlie will always come before me, he was your dad first. I'm just the father-in-law." Carlisle said.
"I know, but you're still my dad." I told him.
"Okay." He said.
Carlisle checked me again and made a few notes on my chart.
"Won't be long now." He said.
"I think that means it's my time to go." Charlie said.
"You'll stay though? In the hospital?" I asked.
"Of course, Renee and the rest of the Cullen's are waiting in the waiting room. I'll see you when my beautiful grandchild is born, good luck and I love you." He said.
"Thanks, I love you too." I smiled.
He kissed my forehead and walked away.
"Dad, in case anything happens-"
"Nothing will happen Bells, everything will work out perfectly fine, it has so far." He smiled.
I just nodded and hoped that he was right.
