"Well I can't tell them now, can I? I mean I can't drop something like this on them after Lydia's whole 'I'm dating my cousin' thing," Keith's voice was soft but also laced with a trace of regret.
He was sitting on the river court beside his best friend Amy. They'd been best friends for years; his mum had even said that they reminded her of Lucas and herself.
"Keith," Amy put her arm comfortingly around his neck and pulled him in for a hug. She could see this was killing him. He hated keeping secrets from his parents and he wanted to tell them. He just didn't know how.
"They'll understand you know. It's not going to make you lose them." Keith could hear the tinge of jealously in her words. Suddenly, he felt a pang of guilt. Amy didn't spend much time with her parents, they both travelled a lot for work and he knew she coveted his relationship with his. But he knew he had it good with his parents, his family, that's exactly why he was scared of ruining it.
"I did try to talk to Jamie…but sometimes he's too wrapped up in his own thoughts to get it…he just made it worst…"
"Did you actually tell him though?" Keith just shook his head.
"How could I? He was just sprouting on about how great our family is and how he knows I will be too…"Keith hung his head in shame at his last words. There was a pause for a moment as his words hovered in the air.
"You will be. This isn't going to change anything."
"It doesn't fit with the image Amy…My mum's a rock-star, my Dad was in the NBA, Jamie and Lydia are who they're meant to be. A gay son doesn't really fit with the quota…
"Ok Jamie this is starting to feel like déjà vu." Once again Jamie had intruded on Lily Scott in the middle of the night and once again she felt the necessity to remind him,
"You're an idiot. Actually to be honest that doesn't cover it. Punching Logan in the face was idiotic, this, this was absolutely moronic!"
"You know Lily I didn't come here so you could yell at me and insult me! I wanted some help but if that's too much trouble I'll just leave." Jamie stood up and made his way to the door but Lily interrupted him just as his hand was closing around the handle.
"Jamie Scott you better sick back down right now," she really knew how to channel Karen when she wanted to and Jamie practically scrambled back to the bed.
"Now my help comes with a healthy dose of insults because maybe that'll stop you doing moronic things." Jamie opened his mouth to protest but Lily ignored him and carried on talking, this time in a more relaxed and calm manner, it appeared the insulting stage was finished.
"I just can't believe you did that!" No apparently there was still some room for a few more snide remarks. "You didn't even try to have a conversation with her, who do you even know that pregnancy test was hers? Your house is practically a hotel, it could be anyone's!"
"I know okay! I just got so angry with them! They just drop the fact that they're 'together' on everyone and then just left like it was nothing! You should have seen Keith's face; he was devastated. I think he's getting bullied at school and this isn't going to help," Jamie attempted to defend his actions but anyone that could see Lily's face knew his efforts were completely useless.
"Yes well obviously this will help, won't it," Lily waved her arms dramatically to indicate the mess Jamie had subsequently created and the sarcasm within her actions could only be rivalled by the sarcasm in her voice.
"Look, even if it could have been someone else's, it obviously wasn't! She didn't deny it!"
"Sorry Jamie, when exactly could she have denied it? After you shouted it out across the beach in front of her new boyfriend, who judging from his reaction had no idea? Or when you were offering to take her to a clinic?! Or when you basically called her a complete slut and said she probably didn't even know who the father is? When would you have said it?"
"Lily I know my sister, if she wasn't pregnant she would have said straight away. You said it yourself, why hurt Logan like that if she wasn't?"
Lily thought for a moment, Jamie's last comment actually made a lot of sense. Lydia wouldn't put Logan through that just to punish Jamie would she? But she couldn't see how Lydia had landed herself in this mess. And maybe Jamie's comment to her hadn't been that bad after all. Was she trying to keep this a secret because she really didn't know who the father was?
During Lily's silence Jamie's lips had begun to form a triumphant smirk. He hardly ever one but it seemed he might actually have come out of this one on top. This just added to Lily's annoyance,
"You're still an idiot."
