Elijah Returns

" Klaus!" Eliza threw herself up into a sitting position, panting frantically. Her hair and forehead was dripping with sweat and her body was shaking from uncontrollable fear. The nightmares were getting worse. They haunted her throughout the night and the fact that there was still a possibility of Stefan trying to kill her didn't help. But never before had she awoken this abruptly and never before had she called out Klaus' name.

Klaus whizzed into the main sitting room, preparing to fight whoever had caused Eliza to scream his name. After seeing that nobody was there, Klaus relaxed slightly but his eyebrows furrowed in confusion. He could already tell that something was wrong because the knitted blanket in which Eliza had previously been snuggled up to, now laid screwed up on the floor and Eliza's whole body was shivering as if she was cold.

" What's wrong love?" Klaus asked worriedly, sitting down by her side and placing an arm around her shoulders.

" Your alive..." Was all she whispered while burying her face into his chest and throwing her arms around him. This afternoons nightmare had consisted of Stefan and Mikeal both killing the Mikealson family; obviously saving Klaus till last. She'd had to watch as they tortured him to the brink of death, then plunged the white oak stake into his heart. Lately Eliza had been sleeping a lot in the afternoon because of the fact that she could no longer sleep at night. She wondered how long she had been asleep for as still exhaustion consumed her.

" Of course I am love... was that another nightmare?" Klaus' arms tightened around her body and he kissed her softly on the forehead. Ever since the day Eliza and Klaus had reunited - after Klaus killed Mikael - Klaus had been worrying over Eliza. Clearly he could see the changes within her; in ways she was much tougher now - a brick wall that would stand until death. However now she was afraid all the time, much more jumpy and easily frightful. Every day now, Klaus worried for her; he was anxious that these nightmares would never go away and that she would always be scared of his monstrous father. So far over the few days he'd been planning how to retrieve the coffins holding his family, he'd made sure to keep an eye on her and that she always stayed within the safety of the house; who knew how many others memories would try to steal her from him yet again.

" Yeh," She nodded breathlessly, gripping onto Klaus' shirt loose cotton shirt.

" Everything's ok sweetheart... they can't hurt you... I won't let them hurt you again,"

" You say that every time Nik... but you have to accept that you can't protect me from everything. There's always going to be someone out there to hurt me because of the fact that you have so many enemies and they know if they hurt me they hurt you. I'm always going to get hurt," Eliza said in a low voice, not truly meaning to blame Klaus for the fact that she's in danger constantly. Though what she was saying was very true.

" I will protect you, considering it's always my fault that your in danger in the first place. Always and forever," Klaus stated dominantly, frowning at Eliza's words.

" Anyway I'm not scared about getting myself hurt, I'd rather of been hurt than what I saw in that nightmare. I've told you before Nik, it's you I'm worried about," Klaus sighed as Eliza said this. Why could she not just focus on keeping herself safe? Klaus thought to himself. The thought of Eliza worrying about him pleased Klaus in a way - it showed how she loved him - but her safety was the main priority. No matter what.

" And I've told you before sweetheart, the only way someone can hurt me is by hurting you. So keep yourself safe. Don't worry about me, the only thing that could have killed me is gone for good," Klaus said.

" I know, I know..." Eliza huffed. " So what have I missed today?"

" Quite a lot actually... some I fear you won't be best pleased with," Klaus said, looking down towards his knees and not meeting Eliza's eyes.

" What have you done now?" Eliza questioned while rolling her eyes. She'd grown use to Klaus doing things she didn't approve of; she knew he would never change, not for anyone.

" Well after speaking to Stefan earlier this morning after you'd fallen asleep on the sofa, he refused to tell me where my family are and said that if I leave Mystic Falls and come ring in a few years then he'd negotiate. So after failing to receive information off of him, I had know choice but to make him, so I had my hybrid run Jeremy over with a car but he ended up hitting that vampire hunter Alaric instead. Then I threatened to kill more of Elena's loved ones and finally Bonnie revealed where my family are," Klaus explained, taking a sip of the alcohol that was in his free hand and smirking slightly.

" Is Alaric alright?" Eliza asked, worried that Klaus had killed him. Though she was happy for the fact that Klaus had discovered where his family is, she was worried that he had yet again hurt Elena - Eliza's only living family - again.

" His supernatural ring will bring him back to life," Klaus replied simply with a small shrug.

" Good, otherwise you definitely will have been in trouble," Eliza said, smiling playfully. " So why haven't you gone to get your family yet?"

" I came to check up on you love before I went. It's a good job that I did otherwise knowing you, you would have come after me," Klaus said.

" You know me too well," Eliza smiled sweetly, then continued. " But what are you waiting for? You've waited a thousand years to be together with your family again?"

" Well I wasn't planning on staying long love. In fact it's best if I go now. Hopefully I'll get to see the shocked look on Stefan or Damon's face when they realize I've outsmarted them," Klaus' smirk grew at the thought of this, he always had loved been the most cunning and powerful.

" I best come with you then since I'm probably the only thing stopping you from killing them," Eliza suggested, pushing herself up from the sofa. However, just as she did, Klaus pulled her back into his arms.

" That's very true sweetheart. But it's dangerous, we don't want Stefan or Damon taking their frustration out on you," Klaus said, his worry reaching his mesmerizing eyes.

" Oh come on! I haven't left the house since that day with Stefan, I miss the outside world! Plus I really doubt you're going to be able to carry those coffins on your own," Eliza said with a short sigh, throwing a pleading look at Klaus. Klaus stayed silent for a moment, contemplating the idea.

" Fine love, but you stay with me at all times," Klaus ordered firmly, rubbing Eliza's arm absentmindedly.

" Deal," Eliza agreed instantly, planting a soft yet passionate kiss on his lips. A smile grew on Klaus' face as she pulled away and both stood, ready to leave. " Wait," Eliza suddenly said before they both headed to the car. " What if your family don't like me?"

" You're worrying about this now love?" Klaus said, rolling his eyes. Though he held back a chuckle as he saw that Eliza was being deadly serious. " I'm sure Rebekah will love having her best friend back, Elijah will love the fact that you bring out the good in me, Finn probably won't care and will go on brooding as usual and Kol... well Kol with be Kol," Klaus said with a short laugh, smiling at the memory of his brother Kol who was the most like Klaus. " But if any of them threaten to hurt you or do hurt you in any way sweetheart, then they'll be taking another time out with the dagger," Klaus promised, taking her hand into his carefully.

" Well if that's so, then I can't wait to meet them," Eliza said, squeezing Klaus' hand as they both set off towards the car.

" Before we go in sweetheart, I have no doubt that the dead witches inside will hurt me before giving up the coffins so please don't try to help or do anything that will harm yourself," Klaus told Eliza as he climbed out of the car and began to head towards the old, dirty white, abandoned house, still clinging onto her hand.

" I won't... Are they going to torture you?" Klaus looked at Eliza for a few moments, frowning to why she even asked. But quickly he realized; her nightmares. Now becoming slightly worried about her, Klaus nodded and continued walking. " It will be a replica then," Eliza said with a sigh.

" Maybe you should wait in the car sweetheart," Klaus suggested as they approached the front door.

" No, I want to come," Eliza stated dominantly, turning away from Klaus and entering through the front door. Since she didn't know where she was going, Klaus lead her down to the basement where there was a large, empty space in the middle of the dust and candle filled room. For a few moments both of them waited in the darkness and Klaus locked an arm around Eliza's wait protectively, his grip tight. The reason why there were waiting, was because Klaus could hear that Damon was coming and he didn't want to miss out on all of the fun he would have when seeing the look on Damon's face. Plus he still hadn't spoken to him or seeked revenge after he helped Mikael tortured his Eliza.

" Well, well what took you so long Damon?" Klaus walked out of his hiding place with Eliza attached to his side, as he came closer to Damon Salvatore who oddly didn't look too surprised to see him.

" I see you brought your bitch with you Klaus... I'm surprised considering she'd leverage and all," Damon said with a smirk, winking at Eliza. Angrily, Klaus growled at Damon and Eliza glared hatefully, not liking the fact that already Damon was distracting Klaus away from the coffins by messing with her.

" No harm will come to Eliza again, especially since I won't hesitate in ripping anyone from limb to limb if they dare even lay a finger on her. In fact I do believe I haven't yet got my revenge on you Damon, for torturing her," Klaus threatened, keeping a calm and collected demeanor.

" Well my front doors always open for when you decide to stop by. Though I'm sure little miss Mikaelson will stop the big bad wolf from coming considering she would never want her best friends brother hurt, Stefan would hate her forever," Damon said with a smirk, sticking to his usual defense mechanism of sarcasm.

" Don't be too sure little miss Elena lover, I'm still reconsidering my choice. After all your brother's already going to hate you after he finds out what you and Elena have been up to this summer," Eliza spoke for the first time, still glaring at Damon.

" You never answered my question Damon, though I believe you were hiding behind your witchy friends. And in squalor no less," Klaus said and straight afterwards his grip loosened from around Eliza and dropped to his knees in pain. Holding back his cries - as he didn't want to worry Eliza too much - he grunted from the pain and clutched his head. Frowning and hating the fact that this scene reminded her so much of her constant nightmares, Eliza turned away in fear, keeping a hand on Klaus' shoulder so she knew he was still safe.

" Insulting a bunch of dead witches... not smart. I made the exact same mistake first time I came in here." Damon said as Klaus breathed a sigh of relief as the searing pain abandoned his head. Eliza too breathed a sigh of relief as she heard Klaus no longer screaming.

" Well, you know, the funny thing about witches is, that living or death, they care about their own. A hundred dead witches have a thousand living descendants... And I have no problem, killing every last one of them, if I don't get my coffins back," As he spoke, again Klaus started crying out in pain as the fire flamed inside his head again causing excruciating pain. " As we speak, my hybrid friend is prepared to end the Bennett line." Klaus forced these words through his gritted teeth and for a moment longer he screamed in pain, before the blazing candles around the room died down to nothingness. Again, Eliza let out the breath she was holding as he stood back up by her side. " Now please... show me the coffins,"

The whole room fell into silence for a moment, before in a sudden flash the coffins appeared in front of the three with a thick layer of dust planted upon the top of them. A thankful smile formed on Klaus' face as he gained his victory. He was very pleased to see his coffins again; he had his family back. Soon he would have everything he'd every wished for; a family, a mate, a home.

" Where's the fifth?" Klaus questioned after a few seconds, as his eyes scanned over each coffin and found that there was one missing. The most important of all. The one that held his dead mother that he'd regretted killing for a thousand years. " Show me!" Klaus ordered.

" Well... here's the thing... they can't, it's not here." Damon replied, the same playful look he always had was plastered upon his careless features. Eliza began to worry slightly as she knew how important these coffins were to Klaus and she knew that Damon was pushing him to his limits; it wouldn't be long before Klaus snapped.

" What did you do?" Klaus asked, fury rising within him. In an attempt to calm him down, Eliza grabbed his arm softly, trying to pull him back towards her, but he only pushed her away so he didn't hurt her.

" Well, Bonnie gave me the heads-up. I didn't have enough time, to get all five, but I did have time to get one," Damon replied, taking a few steps backwards as Klaus approached him with a thunderous look of pure rage. His expression gave out the impression that he was ready to massacre the whole of Mystic Falls.

" I will tear you, limb from limb. And only then, when you're a riving mass of blood and flesh, will I rip your heart from your chest," Klaus threatened menacingly, his hands gripping into fists. Quickly, Eliza grabbed Klaus' arm and attempted to pull him back, worried that he was going to do something he'd regret. Her touch calmed Klaus slightly, though it didn't diminish the rage within him, it stopped him from wanting to lash out and kill Damon.

" Sorry. The same rules apply. You know, leverage and all. I know you want your family back. But something tells me, you want what's in that coffin a lot more," Damon's eyes twinkled mischievously and before Klaus could do anymore, Eliza stepped in front of him and faced Damon Salvatore herself.

" Give him his family back Damon. You have what you want; Elena's alive and safe, nobody in Mystic Falls is in danger. Stop being a heartless monster like Stefan at the moment," Eliza growled, for the first time in her life.

" Ooo I'm so scared, the little girl finally managed to speak," Damon chuckled, while stepping away from Klaus and Eliza.

" Don't underestimate me Damon, I will get that coffin back for Klaus," Eliza stated.

" Good luck with that," Damon gave them one final smirk before sauntering casually out of the abandoned building. When Eliza turned back round to face Klaus, she saw that his fists were still clenched in fury and he was glaring at the spot that Damon had just left.

" Nik we will get that coffin back, it must be important to you so I will try and get it back for you... Stefan can't go on being a monster forever..." Eliza promised, taking both of his hands into hers.

" My mothers is in that coffin," Klaus growled in a low voice, turning his attention back to Eliza. As soon as he did, he calmed down a little.

" Then I will do everything in my power to get it back for you," Eliza promised, leaning in to kiss him softly on the lips. A smile formed on both of their faces.

" Thank you sweetheart, but I'm sure it will only take a few threats to get the coffin back. There are endless amounts of loved ones I can threaten," Klaus said, his voice turning back to his usual light, British accent.

" Just don't do anything stupid," Eliza told him. " Now lets get these coffins back home," With a small nod, Klaus lead Eliza back over to where the coffins were standing and they both managed to lift two coffins with ease.

After the only remaining hybrid helped Klaus and Eliza carry all four coffins into one of the back rooms in the house that led out into the grand garden, everyone fell silent for a moment. Eliza stared at Klaus intently, awaiting for him to open up the coffins and pulled the daggers out. But Klaus kept his eyes locked upon each of the coffins, before sighing and moving away from them.

" Finally you've got your family back," The hybrid spoke, but both Eliza and Klaus ignored him. Now confused to why he hadn't awakened his family yet, Eliza walked over to Klaus, placing a hand on his shoulder.

" Aren't you going to un-dagger them?" Eliza asked softly, not wanting to provoke Klaus in any way as she knew he was in a vulnerable state right now - well as vulnerable as an invincible hybrid can be.

" Not quite yet. I want the other coffin back first," Klaus spoke to her in the same delicate tone. Many plans were now conjuring in his mind on how he was going to get his family back, but unfortunately most consisted of him killing people in Mystic Falls, which Eliza would never approve of.

" What other coffin?" The hybrid questioned, trying eagerly to join into the conversation. But again Klaus and Eliza ignored him, that was until the hybrid cried out in pain and dropped to the floor. In an instant Klaus' hand moved in front of Eliza and he pushed her behind him protectively; this came out of instinct. A small gasp escaped Eliza's lips and she grabbed onto Klaus arms, as she saw the familiar brown haired man in a smart suit - who had tried to kill Klaus a few months ago- step forward with the Hybrids heart in his hand. Elijah.

" So Niklaus..." Elijah said stepping forward with a look of menace on his face. He was definitely angry about being daggered and Eliza feared that he would probably - like every other one of Klaus' enemies - try and kill her.

" Elijah..." Klaus said in shock, his voice laced with a small amount of fear. Pulling Eliza closer towards him, he made sure that she was safely behind him, away from the soon-to-come wrath of Elijah.

" What did I miss?" Elijah asked, a playful smile forming on his face. For now he seemed to ignore Eliza. When neither she or Klaus replied to Elijah, he continued speaking. " You look surprised to see me. So it wasn't you who removed the dagger from my chest?"

" You look like you could use a drink," Klaus said, watching Elijah carefully and waiting for his attack. " And we have a lot to discuss... shall we?" Klaus gestured over towards the dining room, but before he had chance to move, Elijah attacked at full force. Instinctively, Klaus pushed Eliza out of the way, to the opposite side of the room as Elijah forcefully pushed Klaus through the glass panel and onto the floor. Klaus groaned slightly as a few shards of glass plunged into his back.

" Nik!" Eliza shouted, stopping herself from running over to him as she knew it would most likely put herself in danger.

" Easy I just finished renovating!" Klaus shouted at Elijah, ignoring Eliza completely and hoping that Elijah would too. But of course he didn't. Curiously, he turned towards Eliza and approached her, oddly recognizing her slightly.

" I'm guessing you are another one of his hybrids. I suggest you leave as this is family business," Elijah ordered, the angry expression he held didn't leave his face.

" This is my home. I'm not leaving," Eliza said with a deep frown. But instantly she regretted being so stubborn as Elijah had her pinned to a wall in seconds and she began to choke as her airways were blocked. With a growl of annoyance, Klaus attacked Elijah and held him against a coffin by his throat.

" Don't touch her," Klaus ordered angrily and Elijah frowned at how protective Klaus was acting over this one girl.

" Why are you so protective over your monstrosity's? Surely they can protect themselves Niklaus," Elijah said with a questioning look, not looking at all affected by the fact he was being held by the throat.

" I'm not a hybrid," Eliza said in a slight tone of disgust. A frown formed on Elijah's face.

" Another play thing Niklaus? Surely you have been too occupied in retrieving our family without needing to string along another woman," Elijah said while rolling his eyes. Niklaus would never change.

" She's not a play thing Elijah," Klaus growled angrily, throwing Elijah to the floor. How dare he suggest that he was playing Eliza. Klaus thought furiously to himself. " But you have every right to be mad at me. But I kept my word! I reunited you with our family!" Elijah attacked Klaus this time, but Klaus was already prepared and pinned Elijah against the coffin again.

" And I kept my word Niklaus! I let you change into a hybrid after you gave me that pathetic excuse of wanting to save that innocent girl who had been bitten by Tyler Lockwood," Elijah growled back, disbelieving that Klaus even had that much kindness in him to save someone.

" Actually he did save me," Eliza spoke again and Klaus looked at her as if to tell her ' will you stop talking'. But Eliza just ignored him and set her eyes upon Elijah who was now studying her intently.

" Whatever Niklaus has compelled you to believe miss, I suggest you forget about and leave before you get hurt," Elijah ordered in a slightly strangled voice as Klaus' grip tightened around his neck.

" I haven't compelled her to believe anything, brother. Meet Eliza Petrova, sister of the doppelganger Annabelle Petrova. We met in the 1920's in Gloria's bar and was turned after by Mikael after Rebekah and I reluctantly fled the city. I thought she was dead," Klaus said calmly. " Speaking of Mikael, father is dead Elijah," These words caught Elijahs attention in a second and he immediately abandoned the topic of Eliza.

" What did you say?" Elijah asked in shock, his eyebrows furrowing in confusion. Mikael was the most powerful Original Elijah had known, how had Klaus managed to kill him? Elijah thought to himself.

" I killed him, with his own weapon. After he used Eliza to bring me back to town to try and kill me. He's gone Elijah. Forever," Klaus told Elijah with a small smile.

" Then why do our family remain in these coffins?" Klaus moved his hand away from Elijah's neck and allowed him to stand back up. Elijah motioned towards the coffins while speaking. " Finn for over 900 years, Kol for a century..."

" Because of Stefan Salvatore. He holds the one thing keeping me from freeing them. There are things that you do not know about our past, Elijah; Our mother's death. Things I never wanted you to know but I'm ready to tell you now. I only ask that you remember the oath of loyalty you once swore to me," Klaus said, in quite an innocent voice that Eliza had never heard before. In a way Klaus looked desperate; desperate for Elijah to pledge loyalty to him again. Nothing but Eliza was more important to Klaus than family.

" What are you saying?" Elijah asked.

" Always and forever. I need you to stand by my side. Be my brother. Help me destroy Stefan and I promise you our family will be whole again," Klaus promised, placing a hand on Elijah's shoulders and looking honestly into Elijah's eyes. There was silence for a moment and Elijah kept an expressionless face.

" Wait, wait, wait Nik. You can't kill Stefan. He's not in his right mind! You promised that you wouldn't hurt him!" Eliza retorted with a small frown, heading over to where Klaus was standing with anger in her eyes. Letting out a small sigh, Klaus eyes moved to Eliza and immediately the plan of killing Stefan disappeared from his mind; it was strange the power she had over him.

" And I keeping my promise sweetheart, nobody will die. But Stefan will pay. For hurting you and for taking my family," Klaus spoke to her softly, gently tucking a loose strand of hair behind Eliza's ears. Elijah watched the moment Klaus and Eliza were sharing carefully, immensely curious to why Klaus was giving into her so easily. Never before had Elijah seen anything like it.

" I see I have missed a lot. I've never seen you give in so easily to a mere girl before Niklaus," Elijah said.

" He knows that I'd hate him if he even attempted to kill Stefan. I guess that's what love does to you," Eliza spoke delicately, like a small child, while placing her hand into Klaus'. With an amused look, Elijah turned his attention to Klaus again.

" I see you have this girl wrapped around you finger Niklaus," Elijah said in a disapproving way, causing Eliza to frown. Why couldn't Elijah just understand that Klaus was in love with her? Was it that hard to believe? Was it not true?

" Actually brother, it's more like the other way around," Klaus replied truthfully. " Now I must leave to begin my plan of getting that coffin back, so I'll leave you two to acquaint yourselves. But be warned brother, if you hurt her in any way I won't hesitate to stick the dagger back in your heart and put you in your coffin for the next century," Again Elijah frowned as Klaus spoke these words then softly kissed Eliza on the lips. " I love you, I'll be back soon," Klaus whispered softly in Eliza's ear and Elijah heard every word and every word made him more curious.

" I love you too, see you soon." Eliza said with a cheerful smile as Klaus left, leaving both Elijah and Eliza standing in the room in complete silence.
