Chapter 6
APOV
Since I was about to meet Karma and actually talk to her face to face today, I was extremely nervous. I spent some extra time getting ready. This was of course to Lauren's disapproval. She was banging on the bathroom door begging for me to hurry up.
"I swear, Amy, I will cut down this door if you don't hurry up!" she shouted.
I opened the door and just stared at her.
"Calm down, Princess." I mumbled under my still tired breath.
She mumbled something in return but I didn't care enough to listen. Since I had about an hour to kill until we left for school, I decided to practice what I was going to say to Karma.
"Hey, I'm Amy. We danced at that party together..."
No. Too upfront.
"Hi, you must be Karma. I think we met at that party..."
Pathetic.
"Hello, I'm Amy, and you swept me off my feet..."
There were no words to introduce myself to her and to let her know who I was. She was a little bit perfect in my eyes, so I tried not to mess it up. I figured I would just wing it and see what happened. Luckily, Shane had called at the right time to help me figure out this whole mess.
"Okay, I still don't know what we should do for the next party. It will probably be a Halloween party, so we really need to plan in advance-" he rambled on.
"Woah, you're already thinking about the next one?" I chuckled. "Can you at least help me with this Karma situation first?"
"Fine." he sighed. "Meet me at school in the next 20 minutes."
"Thanks, and try not to sound so excited." I replied.
After what seemed like forever, Lauren was finally done getting ready and we were finally in the car.
"Could you have taken any longer?" I asked.
There must have been an anxious tone in my voice, because Lauren picked up on it right away.
"What are you so jumpy for?" she asked sounding annoyed.
"I need to meet with Shane to meet with someone else." I said. At this time, my whole body was shaking from nerves.
"Is this about the party? About that girl you were dancing with? Who was that anyways?"
"Yes, it is. Her name is Karma. Karma Ashcroft." I replied.
Lauren sort of drove in frozen silence. I sensed she knew something.
"Is there something you wanna tell me?" I asked.
She only shook her head. "She's Reverend Ashcroft's daughter, Amy. I'm not sure if that's really something her family would approve of."
I sort of understood where she was coming from. I just turned my head and looked out the window.
"Look, I know we fight and we aren't really good step-sisters to each other, but I'm really looking out for you on this one." Wow, I had never seen that side of Lauren before.
"Well thanks, Lauren." was all I said.
We pulled into the school parking lot with just enough time for me to find Shane.
"I'm kind of freaking out inside right now." I whispered to Shane.
"Over Karma? C'mon, Amy. She's no Cara Delevingne. She is actually the exact opposite." he replied.
We were dodging people as we walked through the halls so I couldn't stop to ask what he meant by that. As my locker neared closer, I stopped about half the way. Karma was already at hers, putting her books away. This was it. I was finally going to talk to her.
"Okay, this is it." I told Shane. "How do I look?"
"Great." Shane said. He seemed to be hesitant about me talking to her.
"Is this a good idea?" I asked.
"I don't want you to get hurt."
This was the first time I had seen Shane with a sensitive side. I gave him a hug and thanked him. He then let me go as if I was his first daughter going to the prom.
So this was it. I was finally going to talk to Karma. I eased my way over to my locker and began to unload my bag. It took me about 5 minutes to unload all my notebooks and books and I still didn't have the courage to say two words to her.
This is so stupid, Amy. Why did you have to make yourself look more awkward than usual? Why-
"You dropped your pencils." I heard her voice call.
"Mmm, what?" I managed to choke out.
"You dropped your brightly colored mechanical pencils." She smiled.
"Oh...yeah...kinda need those. Ha."
Seriously? This was gonna be harder than I thought.
"Yes, you do." She smiled, again. Her smile was absolutely breathtaking.
I couldn't speak back to her, so instead I awkwardly smiled. I was about to give up, and just leave Karma to me my one night dance partner, and nothing else. That is until, she finally spoke up.
"I had fun at the party. I'm sorry I left you on the dance floor." Karma said.
My heart began to beat faster than it already was. Thank God she was the one to break the ice and not me.
"Oh...it's fine." I stuttered.
"You were very good out there. I wish I could have seen more."
I think she was flirting with me?
"Well...then why did you leave?" I flirted back.
"Curfew." she smirked. "And I wanted to keep you guessing who I was."
"You did a good job." I replied, feeling sorta breathless.
"I'm Karma." She formally introduced herself.
I wanted to say that I already knew who she was, but I didn't want to sound like a stalker.
"Amy." I replied.
"I know." she smiled. "When people said Hester had a new student who was 'too pretty to be a lesbian' I knew it had to be my quiet locker mate."
I must've given her a confused look but I managed to say "Really?" in the middle of a nervous laugh.
"Just do me a favor, Amy." she began.
"What's that?"
"Don't believe everything people say about me."
"Oh...no...I wouldn't." I said.
Karma then closed her locker and picked up her bag, and leaned over in my direction.
"Good." she whispered in my ear.
Her whisper sent a chill down my spine. As I turned to face her direction, she was already walking away, but turned back my way and winked at me.
