Epilogue
"Takumi!" Misaki called. "Did you RSVP to the wedding yet?" she asked.
Misaki pushed opened Takumi's office door.
"Of course, darling," Takumi said, standing up. He held the fancy invitation between his two fingers. "What do you think we should give to Mira and Julian?"
Misaki rubbed her stomach and laughed. "You always have good ideas," she said, leaning against the desk.
"How about a fridge?"
Misaki sighed. "Something normal...if you could manage."
Takumi grinned and placed his hand on Misaki's stomach. "Still kicking?"
Misaki nodded. "Not like Ayame which I'm very glad."
Just then, Ayame started crying in the other room.
"Speaking of her...Ayame's awake," Misaki said. "I'll go get her."
Takumi nodded. "What's Hikari been doing?" he asked. "So quiet when Ayame naps."
Misaki smiled. "She's in her room. You could stop by her tea party when you have time."
"Always have time for my girls," Takumi said, getting up.
Takumi knocked on Hikari's door. "Hi Princess," he greeted the little girl with her hair in pigtails and white gloves on.
"Hi Daddy," Hikari said, calmly pouring her imaginary tea into tiny tea cups. She had a little table set up with stuffed animals sitting around it. Each had a tea cup, saucer and a plate with a cookie.
"Wow, a tea party," Takumi said, kneeling. "Can I join?"
"Yeah," Hikari said, standing up. Her light blue dress swished as she got another set out of her toy chest. "You can sit across from me," she said, setting a cookie on his plate.
"Why thank you," Takumi said, taking the little tea cup. "May I have some tea?"
Hikari poured the imaginary tea into the cup. She set the teapot down. "Careful...it's hot."
Part of being a dad was awkwardly trying to fit your 6 foot frame around a tiny three foot high table. Sure Takumi was oversized but he wouldn't miss hanging out with his daughter for the world.
Takumi blew on his "tea." "Can I eat the cookie?"
"Yeah," Hikari said, sipping her empty cup.
Takumi took a bite of the cookie. "Princess," he said. "Don't you get thirsty?"
"That's why we have tea."
"How about we get some real tea?" Takumi suggested.
Hikari thought about it. "Can we?" she asked. She held up the empty sugar jar. "With real sugar too?"
"Of course," Takumi said. "And milk."
Hikari's eyes lit up. "Yes!" she said, getting up. She ran over and gave Takumi a wet kiss on the cheek. Takumi stood up with her in his arms.
"Hi baby," Misaki greeted as they walked into the kitchen. Ayame was sitting on the kitchen floor with a colander on her head and chewing on a piece of bread.
"Mommy," Hikari said, stretching out her arms.
"What are you up to?" Misaki asked, balancing her on her hip as she chopped carrots with the other hand.
"Those are some beautiful carrot pieces," Takumi teased, studying the chunky bits.
"Oh hush," Misaki said, setting the knife down. "Hikari, what were you and Daddy playing?"
"Tea party," Hikari said.
"Again?"
"Yes,"
"Hi," Takumi said, scooping Ayame up from the ground. "That's a cool hat."
Ayame just smiled and threw the colander on the counter.
"Misa," Takumi said. "Hikari wants some real tea to put in her tea pot."
Misaki opened a cabinet. "How about Earl Grey?"
Hikari nodded. "Yes please."
Misaki set Hikari down and took out a teapot. "I'll fill this one up so you can pour it into your own," she explained.
"Me too?" Ayame asked.
"You're too little," Takumi said, kissing Ayame's cheek. "Besides, you don't even like tea parties."
Ayame pouted.
"Mommy will play with you," Misaki reassured her youngest daughter.
"Misaki," Takumi said. "How about we switch? Ayame likes to jump around...she might hurt the baby," he said in a low voice.
"Hikari wants to spend some time with you too," Misaki reminded him. "I won't let Ayame bump into my stomach. It will be fine."
"Okay," Takumi said, kissing Misaki on the cheek. "See you at dinner."
Misaki nodded and led Ayame into the living room.
"Outside?" Ayame asked. She picked up a ball. "Soccer?"
Misaki nodded and took her toddler's hand. They slowly walked out into the background where Misaki and Ayame kicked around a soccer ball. Ayame, being a toddler, only kicked the ball a few feet at a time. Takumi was worrying about nothing again.
"Kick it here, Ayame!" Misaki said, walking barefoot on the grass.
Ayame kicked it as hard as she could, sprawling onto the grass in the process.
"You okay?" Misaki called.
Ayame picked herself up, overalls muddy, but in one piece. "Kick!" she ordered.
Misaki gently passed the ball to Ayame. Just like that, they passed the ball a few times.
"How many spoons of sugar?" Hikari asked.
"One please,"
Hikari measured with precision, exactly one teaspoon of sugar and added it to Takumi's cup.
"Milk?"
"Yes please," Takumi said, smiling.
"How do fancy people drink tea?" Hikari asked, stirring her own drink.
"Just like this," Takumi explained. "Pick up the cup and hold it like this," he said, holding up his own tea cup.
"What about the saucer?"
"Proper tea etiquette- the tea rules, says that you only use the saucer if there isn't a table."
"Ohh," Hikari said, quietly sipping her tea. "Did Princesses drink Earl Grey?"
"I'm sure they did," Takumi said. "When my Princess grows up, I'll take you to England. That's where Kings and Queens lived."
Hikari's eyes widened. "With castles?!"
"Yes," Takumi said. "There are places where you can see the gold crowns."
Hikari was very interested. "Can we drink tea there?"
"I'll let you try the best tea in the world," Takumi promised.
Hikari had to set down her tea cup to contain her excitement. "Oh Daddy...I love castles and tea!"
Takumi chuckled. "You're so little. Usually only grown ups like drinking tea."
"But I want to be a princess," Hikari said, beaming. "So I have to know how to drink tea."
"What else does a princess need to know?" Takumi asked.
Hikari thought about it. "She has to always wear dresses...and dance! So she can dance with her prince."
"And whose your prince?" Takumi asked amused.
Hikari thought about it. "I don't know," she said. "I still have to meet him."
"Can Daddy be your Prince?"
"Yes!" Hikari said, getting up and sitting in Takumi's lap. "Daddy is the best prince in the world."
"Let's hope you still think that when you're sixteen," Takumi muttered to himself.
"What?"
"Nothing, Princess. Drink your tea."
"Ayame!" Hikari called from the door. "Come here! Daddy finished dinner! Mommy too!"
"Dinner, Ayame," Misaki said, taking the bouncy child's hand as she practically skipped to the glass door.
"Oneechan," Ayame said, giggling. "Play?"
"It's dinner time," Hikari corrected. "Eat time."
"After dinner we can go to the park," Takumi said, lifting Ayame into her high chair.
"Yay!" the girls cheered.
Misaki walked into the kitchen to help.
"Did you really have to play soccer?" Takumi asked.
Misaki hugged him from behind. "You are worrying again. Ayame is a little squirt."
Takumi sighed. "Going to be a father of three," he said, shaking his head. "This is crazy."
"If you don't like them," Misaki said, playing coy. "You don't have to get involved."
Takumi chuckled and took her hand. "Like I could bear not to be with my family. Misaki, there's nothing more important to me than you and the girls. You are my everything."
"Takumi is also very important to me," Misaki said, arranging the plates on the counter.
Takumi placed a finger under her chin and turned her head.
"I love you, Misaki," Takumi said.
"I know," Misaki said, avoiding his eyes. "You say it all the time."
"I don't ever want you to forget," Takumi replied. "I was just talking to Hikari about Princes and Princesses. Misa, if I had a fairy tale, you'd be my happily ever after."
Misaki had to blink back tears. "You're making me all emotional, you idiot," she said, wiping her eyes. "I'm pregnant, remember?"
"Which is why I'm going to make you so touched that you cry tears of joy," Takumi teased.
Misaki swapped him with a towel but he dodged it.
"That's not how fairy tales end," Takumi said, grabbing her around the waist. "They always end with a kiss."
He slowly bent over. Misaki closed her eyes.
"Mommy!" Hikari called. "Ayame spilled my water!"
Misaki and Takumi quickly pulled apart and exchanged a smile before hurrying to the dining room.
"Sandbox!" both girls cheered as they dashed to the playground's sandbox.
"Ayame," Hikai instructed. "Fill the bucket like this...now pat it with the shovel."
Together, the girls began building a sandcastle.
"Oneechan," Ayame said. "Seashells?"
"Look," Hikari said, kneeling. "You can decorate the castle with it. Like this!"
Ayame stared at the sandcastle with a thinking face on. "Oh…"
"Look at them play," Takumi said, adjusting the baby bag on his shoulder.
Everywhere they went, they had a baby bag for Ayame's diapers, baby wipes, sippy cups of water, etc. Usually they hung the bag off the double stroller but both girls today were insistent on walking the short distance from the house to the park. Hikari walked all the way but Ayame needed to be carried.
"Cold?" Takumi asked as Misaki wrapped the fuzzy pink sweat closer around her.
Misaki look her head and became mesmerized with the two girls playing...the two girls that were her children.
"Oh my gosh," Takumi said, laughing. "Ayame's in her pajamas."
Misaki stared. "Oh dear...how did that happen?"
Ayame spilled water all over herself at dinner so Misaki put her into a pair of pajamas. She completely forgot to change Ayame before they left for the park.
"It doesn't matter," Takumi said, waving it off. "You don't get many years to always be in pajamas."
"Theoretically, you could wear whatever you want all you life," Misaki countered.
"I'd suggest you not wear your sexy nightwear in public," Takumi said, smirking. "That's for my eyes only."
"Why you!" Misaki said, throwing her phone at him which he promptly caught. "You're still the same perverted outer space alien as you were in high school!" she huffed.
Takumi took great pride in that. "Come on, darling," he said. "You know my flaws are what made you fall for me."
"I'm going to kneel down if you keep teasing me," Misaki warned.
"Yes yes," Takumi said, putting an arm around her and the other on her stomach. "I'll behave. I promise."
"Mommy! Daddy!" Hikari called. "Come look at our sand castle!"
"After you, my Lady," Takumi said, winking.
"If you're not going to sleep in, can I?" Takumi mumbled.
Misaki yanked the blanket off her husband. "You have to go to work. My mom is coming over in a few minutes to watch Ayame and Hikari."
A few months ago, Takumi and Misaki bought Minako a small apartment ten minutes away from their house. Minako divided her time up between her grandchildren. Half the time with Misaki's kids and half the time with Suzana's kids.
"Let me just lay here for another five minutes," Takumi pleaded, childishly hugging the pillow.
"Fine," Misaki said. "I'm going to get dressed."
Misaki flipped through the racks and chose a maternity business suit.
"How's it look?" Misaki asked, straightening her crisp white blouse that was under her blazer.
"Nice," Takumi said, slowly looking her over. "Very nice… You're like a power woman," he stated. "Pregnant and still running a big fancy company."
"I couldn't call THC a big fancy company," Misaki said, swiping on some lipstick. She smacked her lips. "But we're getting there."
Takumi eventually got ready and as soon as Minako came, both Misaki and Takumi left for work.
"Have a good day, Mrs. Walker," Takumi said as Misaki was getting out.
Misaki smiled. "You too, Mr. Walker."
"I'll pick you up at 6?"
"Naturally," Misaki said, closing the car door.
Takumi rolled down the window. "I love you!"
Misaki couldn't fight the smile. "I love you too, weirdo!"
Takumi blew her a kiss and drove off. Misaki turned and walked into her agency. Her heels clicked against the clean floors.
"Misaki," her coworkers greeted.
"Have you seen Ruri?" Misaki asked her secretary.
"I will reach her right away," her secretary said, picking up the phone.
"We have a quick meeting," Misaki reminded her.
"Yes ma'am."
Misaki took the elevator to top floor.
"Mrs. Walker, a pleasure," Sakura said with mock formality.
"Mrs. Sakurai," Misaki replied. "You ready for this meeting?"
Sakura held up her binder. "Oh yeah," she said.
"You won't be ready without me," Ruri said, strutting down the hall. "We're the three female presidents, right?"
"That's right," Sakura agreed. "We're always here to cover for each other."
"That's what friends are for," Misaki stated.
"So the meeting," Ruri said, gesturing to the door. "Being late would be a bad example."
"Of course," Misaki said, opening the door.
The three women filed in. The heavy wood door shut with a slam as a staff meeting began.
THC was in business…
The End
