Cold War

A tower changed from blue to red in the ice sector.

Harry's and Jeremy's dorm

Jeremy's computer went off, waking the two up. Harry immediately clutched his head.

"Something is not right here."

"You're not kidding Einstein," muttered Harry. "Xana's playing up."

"What do you mean, "quack"?" asked Jeremy as he took his glasses off. "An alarm signal and no activated tower…that's weird!"

The next morning

Yumi ran up the stairs to the dorms.

"You're sure about the alarm last night?" asked Aelita.

"Not a hundred per cent, I was pretty groggy…Odd, could you make a little less noise?" asked Jeremy as he looked at the boy.

"Xana was active last night," said Harry. "I felt him watching me as well as having a killer headache. It only lasted for a few seconds though."

"No! If I don't find the DVD of my short film in the next three seconds, I'll turn into a pumpkin!" said Odd.

"Which short film? Natural Grandeur 2 or I Guess Our Guest is a Ghost?" asked Ulrich.

"I Guess Our Guest is a Ghost! If you want me to become rich and famous I absolutely have to give it to TV!"

"TV? Who's TV?" asked Aelita.

"His real name is Thomas Vincent, but everybody calls him TV, because he's the famous news reporter on TV. TV, get it?" asked Odd.

"TV's going to be here in five minutes," said Yumi as she opened the door.

"My career is nipped in the bud!" said Odd as he made a sobbing noise and looked at the CDs. "Uh, hey! Yesss! Fame, fortune and glory are mine!"

Outside

A car pulled up. TV claimed put and Jim opened the door for him.

"My dear TV, on behalf of the students and faculty, we're very honoured that you…" said Delmas as he read his speech.

"Ok, ok, no big deal, time is money. Uh, this is Edna, my camera…uh woman, person, whatever, never on time! Show up late one more time and you're finished! I've got a hundred and fifty cameramen who'd kill for a chance to work with TV!" interrupted TV. Edna frowned. "You, sweatshirt, park my car out of sight from the kids, I don't want them scratching it!"

He tossed the key to Jim who caught it.

Class

"Let's continue with our study of plant life," said Ms Hertz. "After our field trip last week, I asked you to calculate the yield of the field of corn we visited. Now, who can give me the answer?" Nicholas slumped onto his desk.

"Poliakoff!"

"Um…yeah?" asked Nicholas. "1527 tonnes!"

"Really, Nicholas?" asked Ms Hertz. "Well done, you've solved the problem of world hunger!"

The class burst out laughing.

"Quieten down."

"Join me Harry…"

"Not again!"

Jeremy looked at him as TV entered.

"Yes?" asked Ms Hertz.

"Give me a panorama shot of the kids," TV said to Edna.

"Xana playing up?" whispered Jeremy. Harry nodded.

"Ahem! Can I help you?" asked Ms Hertz as she walked over.

"Yes, get out of the shot!" ordered TV.

"Hmph!"

"Do our schools still provide a future for our youth?" asked TV to the camera. "Faced with the teachers' lax attitudes, we have reason to doubt. To see how bad it's become, all you need to do is pick out a student at random and ask him his grade point average! You, for instance! And the boy next to you."

He pointed at Jeremy.

"99.87 out of 100," said Jeremy.

"99.9 out of 100," said Harry with a grin.

"Huh?!" asked TV, looking startled.

"Hm!"

"Ok, cut! That's too high! Who here has a below 60 average?" asked TV as Edna stopped filming. Odd raised his hand. "Ok son, so you're flunking out of school, right?"

"Me?" asked Odd. "Not exactly. I have genius friends who help me. On the other hand, I have this great DVD to show you!"

He handed the CD to TV.

"This cannot be happening! What's with this bunch of…!" The bell rang.

"YAAAAAAAAAAY!"

"I'm so disgusted! TV didn't even want to see my masterpiece," said Odd miserably as they wandered outside.

"Is that what it means to be a starving artist?" asked Aelita as Harry grabbed his head again.

"No!" exclaimed Jeremy as his laptop beeped.

"What?" asked Aelita as she glanced at Harry. "Xana attacking?"

"The alarm! Xana's gone on the attack!"

"I'll warn Yumi," said Ulrich as he pulled out his phone.

"Well I sure hope this goes quickly, because I don't want to miss today's meatballs and gravy, they haven't had them for ages," said Odd. Harry rolled his eyes.

"Typical Odd."

"I can give you your heart's desire…"

"Shut up Xana. I don't want it."

Lyoko

Odd, Yumi and Ulrich landed next to Aelita in the mountain sector.

"Why didn't you want to come again?" asked Odd.

"Because Xana has been talking to me," said Harry. "It's mostly just telling me to join him but it's really annoying. He could influence me."

"Doesn't he do that anyway?" asked Yumi.

"Yes, but this is different. He's talking to me in my head. It could distract me in battle. You could see it as training for without me anyway."

"Join then. You know you want to."

"Be quiet!"

They shrugged and ran in the direction of the tower.

"Watch it, you've got company!" said Jeremy as the icons for monsters turned up.

"Aelita, stay behind me," said Yumi as she pulled out her fans.

"Everyone bring their insecticide?" asked Odd as they looked at the hornets. Ulrich reflected a laser back and the hornet exploded. Yumi continued to run and was bombarded with lasers.

"They need your help. They are weak and cannot survive without you."

Harry clutched his head and Jeremy looked at him.

"Try to ignore him. He'll do this even if you're on Lyoko."

Yumi spun over a gap and landed awkwardly. She looked down. Three hornets attacked Odd and he dodged. He shot at one and it blew up.

Yumi backed up and ran at the hornets, sending her fans flying as she jumped over the edge. One was defected and the other hit the hornet. She caught them then flipped over the gaps.

"Super Sprint!" Ulrich ran down the path with three hornets following him. He jumped over the gap and sliced them. Odd also jumped over the gap and shot one. Yumi's fan hit another.

"Thanks Yumi."

The last Hornet fled.

"Hey! Bunch of chickens!"

"Weird, I guess Xana's not up to snuff today," said Yumi.

"Not true. I have plans…"

"Well weird or not, it's better for us because we have something waiting for us: meatballs and gravy!" exclaimed Odd.

"So hurry up," said Jeremy. They continued down the path to the tower.

"Well, my lady, your tower is served," said Odd.

"Aelita, wait! Look! The tower is deactivating itself," said Yumi as the tower's aura changed from red to blue.

"Told you I have plans."

"And I bet they involve me," muttered Harry. Jeremy looked at him.

"Xana?"

"He's planning something."

"Well, what do you know?" asked Ulrich.

"What does that mean?" asked Aelita.

"I don't know," said Jeremy. "It's part of Xana's plan, I know that much. Oh no! Another tower activated in the Ice Sector!"

It deactivated.

"Again?" asked Jeremy in disbelief. "Unbelievable!"

"What's up?" asked Odd.

"The tower just deactivated by itself," said Harry.

"I don't get this at all," said Jeremy.

"Do you think it's a bug?" asked Aelita. "Is Xana still annoying you Harry?"

"He's gone quiet. For now."

"It's a plot by Xana," said Odd.

"Go to lunch," said Jeremy as he waved a hand at them. "Me and Harry will stay here and try to figure out what's going on. If anything happens, we'll give you a shout."

"I'll stay with you," said Aelita as she put a hand on Jeremy's back and Harry pulled out his laptop. "Three of us should make it go faster."

Kadic

"What's with these little mini servings?" asked TV as he put his tray in front of Odd's. "Come on, Cookie, don't be shy! Load up the meatballs!"

Rosa did that.

"Let me tell ya, it sure is no picnic being a field reporter!"

"Wait, what? Where are all the meatballs?" asked Odd as he didn't get any.

"On TV's tray…"

"Oh! Oh, this is awful!" yelled TV as he spat the food out.

Outside

"Any guy who has wheels like this I'd go out with in a heartbeat," said Sissi as she stroked the car. "Except for Harry…"

"Ok, I'm out of here, I'm starving," said Nicholas as he walked off.

Lab

"It's starting up again! Should I tell the others?" asked Aelita.

"Hang on, it might deactivate by itself again…" said Jeremy.

Several spectres came out of the TV antenna and into the clouds. It started to snow heavily.

Kadic

"Look! It's snowing!" said Ulrich as he pointed out the window. "It's not meant to snow today though."

Students started to cheer and ran outside.

Lab

"The subsystem seems ok too," said Jeremy.

"It's snowing," said Harry. "Rather heavily in fact. Most of it is concentrated on the factory."

"Jeremy, the tower's still activated," said Aelita as the scan turned up with it.

"Uh oh. Bad news. And you can't go straight away…"

"Send me," said Harry. "I can deactivate it rather easily."

Kadic

People were playing in the snow.

"That's enough now! Everyone inside!" ordered im as he received a snowball to the face from the principal. "Huh!"

"Yes Harry?" asked Yumi into her phone as Odd and Ulrich prepared snowballs. "Xana's attacking."

Odd dropped his snowball as a chill wind blew.

"Inside! On the double!" ordered Jim as he and Delmas ushered students inside. The three helped Milly and Tamiya.

"We have to get to Lyoko," said Yumi. "Harry's already on his way there. If he convince Jeremy to send him."

"You're right. I bet the weather's better there," said Odd.

"Jeremy, we're stuck at school," said Yumi into the phone. "Because of a blizzard."

"What a nightmare. Xana's back to his old self!"

Sissi

"It's closed," said Herb.

"Follow me."

The two climbed into the car and shivered. Sissi managed to turn the heat on.

"Cool! A subsonics CD!"

Kadic

Jim handed out blankets.

"I hope Harry hurries," whispered Yumi as he passed them.

"I just hope Xana doesn't try to delay him," said Ulrich. "You know that he's obsessed with having Harry as a pawn. It's a good thing harry isn't too keen on the idea."

"Here, Mr TV, this'll keep your hair in place," said Jim as he handed a blanket to him.

"Well done Ms Hertz. You did well to take the students to the basement of the science building," said Delmas into the phone.

"Look Mr Delmas, I found the weather station! I got this free with my Sumo Mag subscription. Up there it shows the temperature outside, uh, it's 4 degrees below 0 and down here…shows the temperature in here, 37!" said Jim as he showed it to Delmas.

"37 degrees?! Come on, let's go down to the boiler room!"

Sissi

"Uh…it's a scientific fast that if we huddle together, we'll keep warmer," said Herb. Sissi slapped him.

"It's a scientific fact that a good slap will keep your cheek warm!"

Kadic

"I'm setting it to maximum. That ought to keep us warm a bit. Edna, stop wasting film! An unbelievable deep freeze has taken hold of the city, and what are you shooting? Three brats in a basement! It's not a Pg-13! People expect spectacular TV from TV. So let's get out of this rat hole and where the action is! The city!"

"Not with me."

"Oh yes? Fine! You're fired!" he picked up the camera. "Can't have cold feet on this job."

"You can't go outside, it's 40 below out there!" pointed out Jim.

"My car keys!"

"Um…I-I think I left them in the ignition," said Jim as he checked his pockets.

"Idiot!"

"Did you hear that?" asked Ulrich as TV stormed out. "40 below! And there's no reason for Xana to stop there!"

"The only solution is to deactivate the tower on Lyoko! But if we go out, we'll end up as…ice sculptures," said Odd.

"We have to try, we'll sneak out of here and search the rooms for warmer gear. And then we'll run over to the factory," said Yumi.

Sissi

"I'm warning you, Herb: if you fall asleep, I'll slap you again!" yelled Sissi.

"What do you think you're doing in my car?" yelled TV as he opened the door. "Get out of here!"

"Hey! You're not going to leave us in this blizzard are you?" asked Sissi.

"Fine. I'll drop you off. Get in the back and don't get my leather seats dirty."

They did that and drove off as Odd, Yumi and Ulrich ran out in warm clothing. They saw the car crash into the tree.

Boiler room

"How c-c-old is it?" asked a chattering student.

"58 below outside and 23 in here."

Lab

"There has been a sudden cold snap," said the presenter on the news. "It has buried the city under ice and snow in a matter of minutes. Most of it seems to be focused on an abandoned factory and the surrounding area. The council has put the emergency call into action but they've been…"

The window dissolved into static.

Yumi

They ran over to TV's car and helped the passengers.

"It-it-it wasn't my fault, it was the po-power s-steering! I…" defended TV.

"Yeah, right! Why don't you make yourself useful in the meantime?" asked Yumi as she rolled her eyes. "Get Sissi and Herb into the boiler room, fast!"

"Now that's authority," said Odd as the tree starts to fall.

"Ulrich, look out!" yelled Yumi as she tackled him to the ground.

"Ahhh!"

"That was close," said Odd.

"Yumi!" yelled Ulrich has he saw her under the tree.

"This is why…I like bonsais better…" muttered Yumi.

"We'll get you out of there. 1. 2. 3."

The strained against the tree and it didn't budge.

"Forget it. It's much too heavy," said Yumi. "Go to the factory. That's more important."

"We can't just leave you here," said Odd. "You won't last long in this cold."

"O, you get to Lyoko. I'll stay here with my girlfriend," said Ulrich.

"Good luck." Odd ran off.

"Hang in there. I'm going to go look for something to get you out of there."

They bumped fists and Ulrich ran off too.

Lab

"We have no choice, Jeremy," said Aelita with folded arms. "Me and Harry have to go."

"But that's exactly what Xana's waiting for, Aelita! For you two to go to Lyoko alone, so he can steal your memory and possess Harry!"

"If someone doesn't deactivate the tower, our friends will die of cold! And the entire City as well!

"She has a point," said Harry.

"I guess you're right. I'll launch the process."

The two headed down to the scanners and entered one each.

Ulrich and Yumi

Ulrich returned with a pulley. He rubbed Yumi's face. "Yumi!"

"Sleepy."

"No! Sleep later. You have to stay awake. If you go to sleep now, you'll die!"

He looped the pulley around a nearby tree and threaded a chain through it. He started to pull. The chain froze and snapped. He tried again with another chain but that snapped too.

"Yumi… Stay with me! Please…hang on…I'm sure Odd's already on Lyoko…"

Lyoko

"Look out you two. Hornets on their way," said Jeremy as the two rode in the Overjet.

"I can't see anything," said Harry. The shadow of a Mata passed over them and Harry looked up. "They're not Hornets, they're Mantas!"

"Huh?! But…they never leave Sector 5!"

"We have to face facts: Xana is getting more and more powerful," said Aelita.

"About face Harry and fast."

"Don't sweat it Jeremy," said Harry as he started to attack. "I can manage them."

"It's not that I'm worried about. Xana's sent another clone of you."

The mantas had no chance and Harry glanced at the base of the tower. As Jeremy had said, there was a clone. It smiled and sent fans at them which Harry easily dodged. Aelita looked behind them.

"Uh, Harry…"

The two Scyphozoas were behind them. Harry shot away.

Kadic

Jim checked the boiler.

"Well, that's it."

They huddled around the boiler.

"Ok, no sleeping! Everyone listen up! I'm going to tell you a little story! It's from when I was a volunteer research subject for the space exploration programme," said Jim.

Factory

"Think about warm things, Odd! Tahiti…uh…sauna…heat wave…fireplace…!" muttered Odd as he ran to the factory. "Hot springs…b-b-blast furnace… M-m-m-magma…"

Lyoko

"Oh! Flying mines!" said Aelita as more Mantas appeared and dropped them.

"What are you doing Harry?" asked Jeremy. "You're heading straight for the clone."

"It's either that, the mines or the Scyphozoas," said Harry. "I'd rather take my chances with the clone."

Kadic

"And…believe it or not…m-major Santanox really had…hippopotamus blood in his veins!" said Jim as Edna punched TV.

"No sleeping!" she ordered as she gave the blanket TV stole back to Milly and Tamiya. Jim collapsed.

Lyoko

"Why on Earth did you think it appropriate to attempt to freeze us?" asked Harry as they walked over to the clone. "For all you knew, we were at school, freezing to death."

"I'm sure you can figure out the reason. I knew you wouldn't go back to Kadic."

Harry frowned. "The towers. You knew that we would try to see what you were up to. And the cold was to try to kill our friends."

"Exactly." The clone smiled. Harry shivered.

"That smile gives me the creeps."

"Why are you so insistent on protecting those people?" asked the clone as he walked behind Harry. Aelita attempted to go to the tower but the mantas blocked the way. She sent several energy fields at them. "You don't know most of them and you don't have a reason to protect them."

"We let you free. We have to fix the problem."

A Scyphozoa grabbed Aelita and started to drain her memory. Harry moved to free her but the clone stopped him by grabbing his shoulder.

"It's simpler just to submit to me. You're one of the smartest people on this planet. I can see ways of applying that intelligence."

"Does that include world domination?"

The clone rose it's eyebrow in annoyance.

Lab

"Odd!" The boy collapsed into the lab. Jeremy put him into the scanner and ran back to the lab.

"Transfer Odd. Scanner Odd. Virtualisation."

Lyoko

"Nice to see you," called Harry as Odd landed on the Overboard a distance away. "I'm glad you're not dead."

Oh no, more ice," complained Odd.

"Why are you glad to see him?" asked the clone in confusion.

"You still don't understand humans do you Xana," said Harry as he shook the clone off him. "That means you don't understand the bonds that tie us and you can't see that we can accomplish more together than apart."

He shot towards the Scyphozoa and freed Aelita as Odd shot the clone. He dodged and devirtualised Odd.

Ulrich

"Leave me…" whispered Yumi.

"You won't get rid of me that easily!"

Lyoko

"Can I drop you off at the next activated tower, perhaps?" asked Harry as the Overjet flew towards them.

"I wouldn't say no," said Aelita s Harry helped her in. "What about your clone?"

Harry glanced at him. The clone walked towards them menacingly. "I don't think he'll attempt anything to us. Xana still needs your memory and he wants to Xanafy me so the worst he'll do to me is devirtualise me. Or nothing because I might freeze on Earth."

Harry flew the Overjet up and the clone jumped on and stabbed it. It disappeared and they fell. Harry made the ice bouncy and they went up and down until they stopped.

"Forgot about him having my skills."

"It's hopeless to escape me. Your so called friends still don't think much of you."

"That's not true," said Aelita as she and Harry stood up. "Harry is one of my closest friends. I think he's one of the best people in the world."

Harry glanced at her, smiled and attacked the clone. "I suggest you get to the tower Aelita. I'll take care of Mr Copycat here."

Aelita ran towards the tower as the clone pulled out shuriken. Harry took note of the colour and raised his eyebrow.

"How accurately did you copy me?"

"Down to the last detail."

Harry grinned. The clone threw the shuriken and they froze in mid-air.

"What?"

"Safety feature," said Harry as he shrugged. "They can't be used on me. I added it after the last time you copied me."

The clone frowned. Harry used the distraction to devirtualise him as Aelita entered the tower. The last Scyphozoa grabbed him and attempted to take control.

Aelita

Lyoko

Harry joined her and placed his palm to it.

"Return to the past."

Ulrich

"Please…Yumi…don't give up! We need you to fight against Xana…! Ah…" whispered Ulrich as his tear froze. "…I need you…!"

The ice started to melt.

"Yumi? Yumi!" he shook her.

The return to the past consumed them.

Earlier

"What's with these little mini servings?" asked TV as he put his tray in front of Odd's. "Come on, Cookie, don't be shy! Load up the meatballs!"

"Hahaha!" said Odd as he winked at Rosa.

"Do you really want it?" asked Rosa.

"Oh yeah! What are you, deaf too?!" asked TV as Rosa spooned the meatballs onto TV's head. "What the…"

"Haha! And if you're still hungry, there's seconds!" said Odd.

The students laughed. Harry rolled his eyes.
