Déjà vu

Aelita opened the door and strolled into the heritage. She wandered down the hall and paused when she saw three men in black. One advanced as Aelita woke up screaming. She went to the showers and splashed water on her face when Sissi opened the door.

"Was that you screaming?"

"It's uh…" she started to sob.

"Sissi! What's all this about?" asked Jim as he walked over.

"It's Aelita Stones Jim. She isn't feeling well."

"What about you?" asked Jim as he walked over to Aelita. "You're not sleeping."

"Well, she woke me up."

Jim escorted Aelita back to her room as Jeremy opened the door. Harry peered over his shoulder.

"Aelita? What's going on?" asked Jeremy.

"It's… uh…. Nothing."

Harry frowned and sent a quick message in sign language. Aelita nodded as Jeremy raised an eyebrow. Everyone on the corridor peered through their doors.

"Everyone back to bed," ordered Jim.

"You know sign language?" asked Jeremy as they lay on their beds.

"I though it useful to learn. I taught Aelita as well. She had a nightmare."

Morning

"It was daytime, there were these men in black coming after me…it was horrible," said Aelita.

"You must've had a nightmare. You shouldn't get worked up, it happens to everyone," said Yumi reassuringly.

"Yeah, that's right! Happens to me all the time! One night, I dreamt I was on a date with Sissi! Can you think of a worse dream?" asked Odd.

"Xana destroying the world using my body," said Harry as he shuddered. "He made me kill all of you and I was laughing as I did it."

"That's worse."

"Speaking of which, how's your Internet dating going, Odd?" asked Yumi, trying to steer away from nightmares.

"Great! There's this fantastic girl I'm really flipped over too! And I just found out she's a student right here at Kadic Academy, totally crazy! I see her every day, and I have no idea who she is!" gushed Odd.

"I have this feeling that you will know eventually Odd," said Harry.

"And what's worse, he stayed up all night exchanging chat messages with her! I didn't sleep at all thanks to him," groaned Ulrich.

"She sends me these messages that are so romantic! I mean, like poems. Listen to this: "Love, is not looking at one another…" said Odd.

"…it's looking together in the same direction," huh?" asked Jeremy.

"Hey! How do you know that?" asked a confused Odd.

"It's a poem by the guy who wrote The Little Prince! She may be romantic, but she's not very original!" explained Jeremy.

"Ok, it's time to get wet! Are you going to cut swimming again, Einstein and ninja kid, huh?" asked Ulrich as he looked at his phone.

"No, I can't. Jim has already warned me: "No more dumb excuses, you hear!" explained Jeremy.

"He's done the same to me," said Harry. "And I want to get that nightmare out of my head."

"Great, we'll finally get to see that buff, athletic body of yours! I can't wait!" said Odd eagerly. Harry snorted.

"I think you're thinking of the wrong person."

Swimming Pool

"The human body is made up of 90% water, and that is why it floats! Because, contrary to what you might think, water…floats. Don't forget Archimedes' principle: any body plunged into a liquid and…um…is uh…a uh…uh…" Jim struggled to think about what he was saying.

"Comes out wet?" asked Odd.

"I think you mean displacement," called Harry. "The weight of the water displaced is equal to the weight of the object submerged."

"Uh, yeah, right! That's it! Now, no-one has to be scared of the water, unless of course you're lost at sea somewhere in the middle of the Indian Ocean. In that case, you would certainly have the right to say, "Wow, that's a lot of water!" And what's more, it's only on the surface!" said Jim.

"It's on the surface of the planet, right. But the Pacific Ocean is really deep. We could drown."

"Will you be quiet?!"

"Yeah, it's Sophie," said Odd. "She fits the profile of all the messages."

"What makes you think it's a girl in our class?" whispered Ulrich. "It could be Milly or Tamiya."

"Which reminds me of when I was a salvage diver!" continued Jim.

"You used to be a salvage diver, Jim?" asked Nicholas.

"I'd rather not talk about it."

"She's not a first year student either. I forgot."

"Maybe she's in Yumi's class!" suggested Ulrich. "Haha, and what if it's Anais Fiquet? Next to her, you're a real shrimp!"

"Stern and Della Robbia!" shouted Jim as they looked at him. "Uh…I'm sorry if I'm boring you! Alright, on deck, let's see what you can do!"

Which Stern?" called Harry. Jim floundered for a second than pointed at Ulrich.

Aelita clutched her head and Harry rubbed her shoulder.

"You ok?" asked Jeremy. Odd and Ulrich wandered over to the edge of the pool and Jim blew his whistle. They dived in as Aelita had a vision. The men in black advanced on her and she ran. She fell into the pool.

"AELITA!"

Harry jumped in and pulled her out. Everyone gaped at the speed he moved at.

"How did you do that?" demanded Jim.

"Adrenaline?"

Later

"This time it was more detailed," said Aelita as they sat in her dorm. "There were still the men in black but we were at the Hermitage."

"Where you and Franz lived," said Harry. "Xana?"

"The doctor said you passed out from the cold," said Yumi.

"That may be," agreed Aelita. "But what about the visions? Where are they coming from?"

"Possibly your subconscious mind," said Harry. "Or Xana could be doing something with the virus."

"I'm certain that it's no big deal. The best thing is for you to get some rest now," said Jeremy. Harry rubbed his head as his eyes gazed into nowhere. "Harry?"

"No," muttered Harry. "I don't want to. Go away!"

"HARRY!"

Jeremy shook him vigorously as Harry slammed him against the wall then let him go.

"Remind me to never get on your bad side," muttered Jeremy as he rubbed his shoulder. "You're really strong."

"What happened Harry?" asked Yumi.

"I had that nightmare again but this time I could hear you pleading with me."

"I have to go," said Yumi as he looked at the time on her phone. "I'm already late."

"And I want to speak to Uncle Franz," said Harry. "Later, can I go to sector five? It doesn't have to be today."

"We've got to go too," said Jeremy as Odd used his laptop. "Ms Hertz will kill us."

"Wait a minute," said Odd. "I'm just about to find out who she is."

"Come on, Odd, you can talk to your cyber girlfriend after class!" exclaimed Ulrich as he turned it off.

"Take the computer with you," said Jeremy as he kept the door opened for him. "See you later Aelita. I'll come and check on you."

Class

The bell rang as people took their seats.

"Hey! Can't you look where you're going, you clumsy dork?!" demanded Sissi as Odd bumped into her.

"Oh, sorry Sissi! I mistook you for a doorpost!" joked Odd as he sat down and opened the laptop. "She's in our class! She says that she has science with Ms Hertz."

"Odd, pass me the computer," said Jeremy as he took it. "I forgot to check something." Harry grabbed his head.

"If it's Xana, he's active alright. Two towers in fact. One seems to be giving me those nightmares though I don't see why he wants to do that. The other seems to be focused on Aelita."

"Settle down and be quiet," demanded Ms Hertz. "Please open your books to page 99."

"Oh no, an activated tower! Ma'am, can I go to the bathroom?" asked Jeremy.

"Uh, me too!" said Odd, Ulrich and Harry.

"Ohh no you don't! It's always the same with you four! You should have gone before class! And put that computer away before I take it away!" ordered Ms Hertz.

Outside

Aelita walked down the path with her eyes closed as she remembered the vision and paused outside the Hermitage before pushing the gate and entering the property. She had a flashback to when the Hermitage was in good condition. She looked in the rooms and had a flashback. A grey haired man was playing on a piano. Aelita walked over and watched.

"Calm down Aelita."

She walked up the stairs and peered through an open door. She had another flashback.

"Calm down!"

Class

"Mercury freezes at -38oc and at room temperature, it is therefore in a liquid state. We use it in certain devices like thermometers for instance because it expands with heat. It is also a very heavy metal, which means…what? Sissi?" asked Ms Hertz.

"Uh…uhh…it means...uh, uh…that a pound of metal weighs…uh…nearly a ton?" asked Sissi in a wild guess as she stopped drawing. The class laughed and Ms Hertz looked annoyed. The bell went.

"Warn Yumi. I'll go get Aelita. We'll meet at the factory," said Jeremy as they walked out the classroom.

Jeremy ran to the dorms and knocked on the right door.

"Aelita?"

He opened it to reveal that she wasn't there and called her.

"Jeremy?"

"Aelita? Where are you?"

"At the Hermitage."

"You should be resting."

"These visions are haunting me. I've got to find where they're coming from."

"Harry thinks they're coming from Xana," said Jeremy. "He's on the offensive. The others are at the factory. I'll come and get you."

"I'm big enough to make it to the factory by myself."

"Ok. But hurry."

Aelita ended the call and looked out the window to see three men in black. She screamed and backed away. It faded to be replaced by another.

"Aelita. Come quickly." It was the grey haired man.

"Hello? Is anyone there?"

Aelita ran down the stairs to find the three men in black. She ran outside.

"This way."

She ran through the secret passage.

Lab

"Thirty seconds more and you can head to the scanners," said Jeremy. Harry looked at a picture of his mum, uncle and cousin. The door opened.

"There you are at last," said Odd. "Hey Cinderella, we said midnight on the dot!"

"Are you ok?" asked Jeremy.

"I had some more visions. Um, I saw a man, and it was…"

"Who?" asked Jeremy.

"Franz Hopper! I know it sounds crazy, but I'm sure it was him!" exclaimed Aelita.

"This the man you saw?" asked Harry as he handed her the picture. Aelita nodded.

"Yeah, that's Uncle Franz," said Harry as he took the picture back.

"Are you sure?" asked Yumi.

"I'm certain."

"Is this Xana's offensive?" asked Odd. "These visions."

"Exactly! Xana is perfectly capable of stimulating your cerebral cortex through the virus that links you to him. And from that, he can paradoxically simulate in you an artificial sleep, and involuntary psychic activity that goes with it," explained Jeremy. Harry raised an eyebrow.

"And my nightmares?"

"Are probably caused by Xana as well," said Jeremy. "I think he's trying to influence you subconsciously but it's not working properly."

"In short, you mean Xana's showing you free movies?" asked Odd.

"Why?" asked Ulrich.

"For me, it's probably his standard MO," said Harry. "Getting me to join him and all that."

"Let's not hang around to find out," said Odd. "Let's go deactivate the towers."

"I'll take the one that Xana is using on me," said Harry as he headed down to the scanners. "I'm going alone. I want some time to think."

Jeremy shrugged and started up the process as the other four left for the scanners too. "Transfer Harry. Scanner Harry. Virtualisation. Ulrich and Odd next. Transfer Odd. Transfer Ulrich. Scanner Odd. Scanner Ulrich. Virtualisation."

They appeared in the desert sector.

"The activated tower is due south. Harry, yours is north. Do you want the Overjet?"

"No thanks."

"Ok, you're all there now. Don't waste time."

They started in the direction of the towers.

Forest

Harry hopped over a log and sighed.

"Why does my life have to be so complicated?" he muttered.

"Because you are trying to too many things at once. I can take some of those things off your shoulders," came his own voice. Harry raised an eyebrow.

"Haven't you gotten bored with sending clones against me Xana?" he asked as he turned to face it. "This is what? The fourth time you've sent a clone against me? Or is it the third?"

"Third."

"Thank you. The third time. I think I know how to deal with them now. So don't bother."

The clone pouted. "I do need to weaken your will."

"That's why you sent those visions of me killing my friends, right?"

The clone nodded. "You are clever. You will make a perfect servant."

Harry made a face. "Over my dead body."

Desert

"Xana's monsters up ahead, do you see them?" asked Jeremy as they neared the tower.

"We'd have to be as near-sighted as you not to see them," said Odd. "How's Harry doing?"

"He ran into a clone. Again. Harry, you're not meant to be chatting with Xana."

"Odd, you take care of the Bloks," said Ulrich. "I'll take care of the tarantulas."

"You got it!"

"Ground and air attack," said Yumi as they flew away from Aelita. Odd pelted the Bloks with laser arrows as the other two jumped off their vehicles. The tarantulas shot at Ulrich who blocked the lasers before running with Yumi at them. Odd hit a Blok.

"Piece of cake."

Ulrich ran around a tarantula and Yumi jumped over him as he fan hit the monster. Aelita went to the edge of the sector.

"What's going on?"

The transport orb appeared.

"The Transporter…but I didn't call it up! Aelita, what are you doing?" asked Jeremy.

"Sorry Jeremy, but I want some answers. I have to find out where these visions are coming from!"

The Orb picked her up and headed for Sector Five.

"It's a trap!"

Yumi jumped on top of the last Blok and hit it with her fan.

"Way to go Yumi."

"Xana's succeeded," said Jeremy desperately. "Aelita's gone to sector five. Yo have to get there quickly."

The transport Orb arrived and picked the three up.

Forest

"Why don't you want to serve me?" asked the clone. "It would make life so much simpler."

"I think I made my views on that clear," said Harry as he started to back towards the tower. "I like having free will."

"But you're restrained by rules," said the clone as it followed him.

"Because some things are wrong to do."

"Aelita is going to find answers you know," said the clone as it changed track. "As I see it, you have two choices. Help Aelita or deactivate the tower. If you chose Aelita, the visions will continue and if you chose the tower, Aelita will have her memory drained. Your choice."

Harry closed his eyes and a smile flickered across his face. "Or I could chose option C which is none of the above or option D which is do both."

The clone frowned. Harry used a shadow of a nearby tree to go to the tower.

"Sucker."

He entered it and rose to the second platform.

He jumped outside the tower as it deactivated to land on his clone's head. He shot to the nearest shadow and arrived in Sector Five.

Sector Five

"What do you think you're doing?" asked Harry as he arrived out of Aelita's shadow. She looked at him.

The other three arrived and ran through the entrance. A Scyphozoa appeared and picked Aelita up. Harry rolled his eyes and cut the tentacles before aiming at the symbol on its head. It retreated.

"You were right." Harry groaned.

"Are you attempting to stalk me or something?"

He turned to face the clone. The clone looked at him.

"You were right. You could do both. I forgot about that shadow travel thing you have."

"Great, a leapfrog contest," said Odd as they came across moving platforms at the other end of the room. They started to jump.

"Come on Aelita," said Harry as he started to pull her way from the clone. "If we leave him, he'll get bored."

"Hurry up!"

"You think this is easy?!" asked Ulrich. Odd looked at the two Harrys.

"Which one is the real one?" he asked.

Harry continued to pull Aelita down the corridor with the clone following them.

"Odd, mind telling me what you're doing?" asked Jeremy as he aimed at the one closest to him.

"Saving the day!"

He fired and hit the clone who turned to glare at him.

"I think you just annoyed him."

Odd got crushed against another pillar.

"Ohhh, Sector 5 is even worse than Ms Hertz' class!" muttered Odd as he came out the scanner.

Ulrich arrived at the platform and attacked the clone who immediately devirtualised him. Harry sighed.

"Looks like I'll have to deal with him." They both went to top speed and clashed.

"Ten seconds until the end of the countdown."

Yumi jumped over to the key and pressed it. The floor formed and Harry used the distraction to destroy the clone.

"Let's go before Xana sends another one. I hate copycats!"

They jumped onto the elevator and waited for it to stop.

"As soon as you get to the Celestial Dome, get out of Sector 5 and head for the Desert Sector, fast! Ok, Aelita?" asked Jeremy. Aelita didn't listen, and strolled over to the interface instead. "Aelita, what did I tell you? We're not getting any data! You have to deactivate the tower!"

"Aelita!"

"It won't take long."

"It's one of Xana's traps Aelita," warned Jeremy. "He made it to lure you to sector five so he could steal your memory! Did you hear me? Harry, Yumi, drag her out of there by force!"

"What do you want us to do, knock her out?!" asked Yumi as she looked at the mantas.

"It won't be necessary. I'm sure I'll find what I'm looking for."

The Overwing and Overjet appeared and they flew off to face the mantas.

"Aelita, even if you find the origin of your visions, what's the point if Xana takes your memory?"

Harry took three perfect shots.

"You two, Xana's got Aelita!"

Harry flew back to the interface and shot the Scyphozoa. A clone landed on the Overjet.

"Not again!"

He rolled over and the clone fell off. Harry shot the Scyphozoa again and it retreated.

"You ok Aelita?" Aelita nodded and jumped on the Overjet.

"It's time to deactivate that tower," said Yumi. "Did you deactivate yours Harry?"

He nodded.

"The tunnel's open."

They arrived in the desert and Aelita entered the tower. She rose to the second platform.

Later

"Hi Aelita," said Yumi as she sat down. "Had any more visions?"

"Gone."

"You see?" asked Jeremy. "It was just a trap made in Xana!"

"I would like to know where those memories came from. Maybe Harry was right when he said it was from my own subconscious."

"I think Xana made them up," said Ulrich.

"Or the memories came from someone else," suggested Yumi as Odd used Jeremy's laptop. "Implanted in you to scare you."

"That could be it."

"I was under the impression that I was reliving the events," said Aelita.

"How about you Harry?" asked Yumi as she turned to face him.

"They're gone too. I don't think I'll be dreaming about killing my friends again anytime soon."

"So Odd, how's your cyber sweetheart?" asked Ulrich.

"She is too cool! I've really got it bad this time, guys! I'm going to meet her!"

Harry rolled his eyes at Odd.

"When?" asked Yumi as he shut the laptop and stood up.

"Now! At the vending machines."

He ambled over to them and saw Sissi. "I don't believe this!"

"So Odd, your fantastic girl, what's she like?" asked Ulrich as he sauntered over.

"Uh…surprising!"

"So, did you meet your mystery computer boyfriend? What's he like?" asked Herb as he walked over to Sissi with Nicholas.

"If he's a mystery, why would I tell you, you dork?" asked Sissi as she saw Odd and Ulrich. "What's the matter with you? You act as if you never saw me before!"

"Never like that…" muttered Odd.

The others walked out. Harry groaned as he saw a familiar few faces. They looked at him and followed his gaze. They ran to a deserted part of the campus.

"What are you doing here Dumbledore?" asked Harry. "I see you've brought Bumble and dumb with you."

"I'm not dumb!"

The two pulled out their wands but Dumbledore stopped them.

"I left a Portkey for you."

"You mean that pencil?" asked Harry. "I removed the enchantment on it. That was easy by the way. Nice translation charm."

"You made me look like a fool."

"You are a fool," said Odd as he appeared with Jim.

"I thought I told you to never come here again!" Jim grabbed them and dragged them away. "I'm taking you to the principal!"

The six laughed.
