The secret

Yumi's phone rang. She picked it up and listened.

"Ok Jeremy. I'll be right there."

She put her clothes on hurriedly and slipped outside. She had just closed the gate when William nearly ran into her.

"Yumi? What are you doing up so late?" he asked as he rubbed his shoulder.

"I wouldn't exactly call this being "up," would you?" asked Yumi as she stood up.

"Sorry, I was speeding to get back to the dorm. I slipped out to see skyburger four but it was really lame."

"The first three were duds so why are you so surprised?"

"I guess I'm too much of an optimist. You know, when things start badly, I feel that they can get better."

"Well now I've gotta go," said Yumi as she started to walk.

"Really? Where to?"

"To save the world! Is that a good enough answer for you?" William grabbed her. "Let me go William."

"Ok, but before I do, you'd better give me a kiss goodnight."

"I have a boyfriend!"

"Ulrich? What do you see in that guy?"

"Alright. But first close your eyes."

"Great! Well I guess my evening wasn't a waste after all…" said William as he closed his eyes. Yumi escaped.

"Yumi? Yumi?" asked William as he opened his eyes and saw that she left. "Yumi!"

Scanners

Yumi walked into the room.

"Here I am Jeremy. You can send me in."

"You got here just in time to welcome the others back."

"You've already deactivated the tower?" asked Yumi as the scanners opened.

"Hey Yumi. What happened to you?" asked Ulrich.

"Did you not hear your phone ring?" asked Aelita.

"Nothing to worry about, I oversleep at least three times a week! Of course, with Ulrich who snores like a grizzly, it's a question of survival," said Odd.

"Actually, it's not only my sleep that's beginning to bring me down…"

"Is it William?" asked Harry as he walked out one of the vacated scanners.

"How did you know?"

The next day

Jim was taking the register.

"Hey, last night, you pulled a fast one on me," whispered William as he walked over to Yumi. "No one has ever humiliated me like that before. Why?"

"Because I find your dumb, two-bit Casanova act sickening!"

"But I…"

"In the beginning it was pretty nice, but now I'm really fed up! You know I have a boyfriend. So why don't you buzz off, William, and leave me alone?"

"William Dunbar! William Dunbar!" yelled Jim.

"Ok, ok, I'm not deaf, you can see I'm here, can't you?!" yelled an annoyed William.

"Dunbar! To the library, out of my sight!" ordered Jim. "No swimming for you today, you got that?!"

"Anyway, I'd like to know what you had to do that was so important last night. And I'm going to find out what your big secret is…you can bet on that!" said William as he left.

Elsewhere

"Don't worry Jeremy," said Aelita as Jeremy researched the First World War. "We're going to make a fabulous report. It's a good thing that we were allowed to go with Harry and Sissi."

"I told you that I could help with the staff," said Sissi as she smiled.

"We'd better. It counts for the whole semester."

"So, what's the latest in the world of Kadic Junior High?" asked Ulrich.

"Is Judith Nevers going out with Ronaud Limousin?" read Odd.

"Who are Judith Nevers and Ronaud Limousin?" asked Ulrich.

"How should I know? Anyway, it seems they are going out."

"O h no. I don't believe it," moaned Jeremy as Harry rubbed his head. "Xana's attacking."

"Not again!"

"We can't get out of history class."

"Don't sweat it. Ma and Ulrich can go get ready," said Odd. "You can send us to Lyoko when you're ready. Finish your report as soon as possible."

Harry split into three and two disappeared. "One's coming with you."

William

"Hmph, a second-rate Casanova, huh?" muttered William as he kicked a rock. He glanced around to see Ulrich and Odd lifting the manhole.

"I can't reach Yumi, she's not picking up," said Ulrich into his phone.

"What's going on with her lately?" asked Odd. "Last night and then now."

"You heard Harry. William did something that caused her to be delayed in helping us." Ulrich glanced around then whispered. "William's following us. Harry just told me. Or his clone did."

Odd nodded.

William watched from behind a tree.

Class

"Sir, is it ok if we begin now?" asked Jeremy after setting up the projector. Harry made sure that everything was in order.

"Yes, you may begin. But where are Odd and Ulrich?"

"They had something important to do."

"More important than my class?"

"I wasn't supposed to tell you but they're setting up a surprise."

"A surprise? What kind of surprise?"

"It's um…it's a big historical show in your honour!"

"Ohh! I would never have guessed! I'll excuse their absence this time."

"Can we begin?" asked Aelita.

"We would like to get on with it," said Sissi. "We have important things to do."

"Yes, of course. Tell us everything that you know about world war one."

"On June 28th 1914 a Serbian student assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand, nephew and heir to the Austro-Hungarian emperor, Franz Joseph. This took place in Bosnia, Herzegovina. Political alliances were reinforced and within a few days, all of Europe became involved. Serbia, Russia, France, Great Britain were on one said, and Germany, Austria, Hungary on the other. Other countries became part of the conflict. Germany invaded Belgium. Italy, Greece, Romania and the US joined the allies with Turkey and Bulgaria supporting central Europe. The armistices signed in late October and early November of 1918 put an end to the fighting, but peace treaties had to be drawn up for a definitive end to the war the most people hoped to be the war to end all wars, clearing the way for a lasting peace. Finally in Paris, the victorious countries united in a peace conference with the two-fold mission of creating a league of nations, and the adoption of peace treaties submitted to the defeated nations. I hope that wasn't too long," said Jeremy as Aelita flipped through the pages. The class scribbled down notes. "Sir, may I go to the infirmary? I have a bit of a headache."

"I do too sir," said Aelita. Harry and Sissi used the same excuse.

"Yes, go on. I'm not feeling to well all of a sudden."

Factory

William peered down as the two visible boys called the elevator.

"Call Yumi. She's bound to answer soon," said Odd.

Swimming pool

"Today, we're going to have a little lesson in synchronised swimming!" said Jim as Yumi's phone rang. "And that means no speed competitions, no stopwatches, just pure grace! As someone once said, a picture's worth a thousand words, here's a demonstration! Admire the finesse…"

Jim performed a bomb and created a mini tsunami before he attempted "synchronised swimming" which, coming from him, looked totally ridiculous.

"You know what I think? That's about as graceful as tractor pulling," said Yumi.

Factory

"Do you think we get a good grade?" asked Aelita as they walked into the elevator. William hid behind the cover. "We said all that we wanted too but it was fast."

"He said one page. He didn't set any time limits."

"It seems that Xana is becoming more active lately," said Aelita as William ducked beneath the cover.

"Sorry to interrupt but do you mind telling me who this Xana is?"

"Sure we can," said Harry. "It's not like you're going to remember."

"Hi Einstein, we warmed up the computer for you," said Odd as the doors opened. "What's William doing here? Oh, he followed us. Harry told us that."

"Harry?" asked William in confusion. "He's right here."

"He's also over there," said Sissi as the clone appeared.

"What is this thing anyway?" asked William. "What do you do here?"

"Why don't I clobber him?" asked Ulrich.

"Yeah, try it if you think you're good enough!"

"Get Harry to do it," suggested Sissi.

"Calm down," said Jeremy as he replaced the two at the terminal. "Our priority is the tower. Afterwards, a simple return to the past and William won't remember a thing."

"I wouldn't bet on that," said William. "I remember everything and I'm great at holding a grudge."

"Do you remember the time that you and Ulrich fought the Krabes that had come to Earth?" asked Harry. William shook his head. "Ha. You don't remember everything."

"Where's Yumi?" asked Aelita.

"She's at the pool," said Harry. "My clone just told her but Jim intervened."

"Your clone's there," said William as he pointed at it.

"There's another one."

"So this is Yumi's secret," said William. "A supercomputer in a hideout. No wonder she didn't want to tell me. This is incredible."

"We'll have to make do without her for the moment," said Jeremy.

"I'll go and get her," suggested William. They looked at him.

"I hope he won't rat on us to the principal," said Ulrich.

"That's not his style," said Odd. "We need Yumi. We don't know what's going to happen on Lyoko. And Harry's clone is keeping an eye on him."

William ran out the factory as a worker walked in. he opened his bags to reveal explosives.

"Transfer Aelita. Transfer Harry. Transfer Sissi. Scanner Harry. Scanner Sissi. Scanner Aelita. Virtualisation. Transfer Odd. Transfer Ulrich. Scanner Odd. Scanner Ulrich. Virtualisation."

Lyoko

"Here come your vehicles. The tower is at the northern edge of the sector. You should be able to see its halo."

"How come you're always right?" asked Odd as they moved in the right direction.

"We're on it!"

"Watch it. There are Kankrelats behind you."

"No flips please," begged Sissi. Aelita sent an energy field at them.

"There's not much I can do about that Sissi."

"Do you know how many of them there are?" asked Aelita.

"Um…a big gang of them!"

"Thanks, nothing like precision!"

Two jumped on the Overbike and Harry shot them off.

"Good shot," said Sissi. She jumped off and started to fly then shot one from the air. Harry shot the rest.

"That's not the last of them."

"You're closing in on it!" said Jeremy.

"Great! Tell that to the Kankrelats, they'll be overjoyed!" exclaimed Odd as the monsters turned up.

"Go separate ways and meet up on the other side," ordered Ulrich.

"Gotcha."

They separated. Odd and Aelita went down a passage, Ulrich used the path and Harry and Sissi flew direct to the tower.

"Since when do Kankrelats have turbo engines?" asked Odd as one caught up to them.

Swimming pool

"Be like me! Remember my example, my grace!" said Jim as people swam. William rushed in.

"Yumi, let's go! Xana's launched an attack."

The clone facepalmed.

"Dunbar, what is this gibberish?" asked Jim. "You making fun of me or something?"

"No. I mean, not this time…"

"To the principal's office!"

"Jim, I nearly drowned because of him. Let me take him. To make sure that he goes there."

"Good idea Miss Ishiyama. That's a responsible attitude," said Jim. "You could learn a lot from her example, Dunbar!"

"Yes, you're right. I know that Yumi's got a lot she can fill me in on…"

Factory

The worker placed the explosives on the pillars. He then set the detonator for ten minutes.

"I still can't figure out what you guys do in that run down factory," said William as they ran along the bridge.

"And I can't figure out why they agreed to let you lend us a hand."

"Maybe it's just because they trust me! Not like…"

"Not like you Yumi," said one of the two clones.

"Jeremy, it's me. We're on the bridge," said Yumi as she ignored the clone.

"They're nearly at the activated tower."

"I came too late for the party again!"

"Hey, who's that guy? Is he one of your big superheroes?" asked William as he pointed at the worker.

"No, in fact I think he's more of a big super-bad guy," said Yumi. "Jeremy, there's someone here possess by Xana so we might be a little while longer."

"Ok Yumi, be careful. I'll tell the others that they need to hurry up."

"What, you mean that guy's your enemy? An electric company worker?" asked William. "That's so lame. I was expecting something more…gory."

"It's not so much the guy but what's controlling him," said a clone as they took fighting positions. "We might not be much use."

The worker rushed at them and slammed his fist into the ground which created a small crater.

"Ok, I take it all back! He's a super enemy electrical worker!"

"He's not that either."

Lyoko

"You go on, I'll take care of them," said Ulrich as they looked at the Bloks. He was immediately devirtualised. "Tch, that's pretty sneaky to hit and run…"

"Yumi, are you still there?" asked Jeremy.

"Yes I am, but maybe not for long! This guy's a terror!"

"Hang on. Harry or Aelita should be in the tower any minute."

Sissi hit a Blok but it didn't do anything.

Factory

Yumi was slammed against the wall.

"Get out of there Yumi! I'll take care of this."

"William! Don't!"

William attempted to kick the worker but he grabbed William's foot and swung him around. Harry's clones threw shuriken at the man, forcing him to back off.

"Yumi? Yumi? Answer me! Odd, you've gotta get the job done now!"

Lyoko

"No kidding we do! I thought that we'd go after tea time," joked Odd as he flew around the Bloks. Aelita jumped off and entered the tower as one of the Bloks froze the other. Sissi shot it as it hit Odd who devirtualised. Aelita rose to the second platform.

"Yumi, I gotta tell you this, ok? I..." said William.

"This is a very bad time, William."

"I…can't swim!"

"Liar," said a clone as he knocked the man out of the way. "You swam when you saved Ulrich one time. Aelita's in the tower."

They helped the two up and Yumi picked up her phone as the worker collapsed.

"Yumi?"

"Nice going. You guys did it just in time."

"Everything ok on your side?"

"It was a close call."

"What happened just now?" asked William.

"Life," said a clone.

"Jeremy, now the tower's deactivated, you can launch a return in time, right? So that you know who doesn't interfere with us again."

"What gives you the idea that this is all over?" asked William. "This guy works for Explobat."

"The explosives company?" asked a clone. William nodded. "Uh oh. Xana's blowing up the factory."

"Did you just hear what those two just said?" asked Yumi into the phone.

"Yeah, but relax. I'll launch a return and the explosives will disappear along with William's memories and the clones will go too until the next time Harry brings them out. The Scyphozoas!"

Lyoko

Harry dragged Aelita onto the Overjet as the two monsters approached. "Sissi, get going!"

"Keep away from them Harry."

"Well, duh."

"Why not just launch it now?"

The Scyphozoas slammed their tentacles into the Overjet as Harry started to pull away. It disappeared. Harry pulled Aelita onto his back and started to run. The Scyphozoas grabbed them before they could go anywhere.

"Get out of my head! Help Sissi!"

Sissi tried to aim at the monsters but hornets arrived and shot at her.

"It's too dangerous. If we return while Harry and Aelita are in Xana's clutches, who knows what will happen. Get back here now and I'll send you to Lyoko. Ulrich, Odd go find that bomb."

"Will do."

Factory

"Good luck Yumi."

"You too. Find that bomb so the factory doesn't turn into smoke."

"Where did the clones go?" asked William. "And we ought to spilt up."

"As I understand it, The Scyphozoa interferes with Harry's control of them," said Ulrich. "And good idea."

They separated and looked around for the bomb.

"Ok, I found it. It's over here," called Odd as he pointed at the bomb on the pillar. They ran over.

"No, that's only one of the charges he set up. There has to be a detonator. That's what we're looking for."

"How do you know all this stuff?" asked Ulrich.

"My uncle sued to work in construction and I'd go with him in vacation. He used to show me how too…"

"Ok," interrupted Odd. "These stories are very moving but we have a detonator to find."

"Where would we find the detonator?" asked Ulrich.

"I don't know but the worker ought to know."

"Yeah but he's out cold like any normal ex-Xanafied guy."

"Keep searching and I'll try to wake him up," said Odd as he walked off.

Scanners

Yumi stepped into the scanner.

"Transfer Yumi. Scanner Yumi. Virtualisation."

Lyoko

"The Scyphozoa has just released Aelita."

Aelita ran off with a Megatank following her. Sissi tried to hit Aelita but missed. The Megatank fired and devirtualised her.

"She's probably heading to the way tower to destroy the ice sector. Release Harry and get after her."

"Consider it done."

Yumi used her fans to slice through the tentacles holding Harry. He glanced at her and followed Aelita. Harry easily caught up with her and pulled out his sword. Aelita threw an energy field at him which he easily dodged.

"You know that you can't hit me Aelita. I'm really good at dodging and I can move out of the way. I can't stop dodging even if I tried to."

The Megatank rolled as it opened slightly and charged up its laser. Yumi hit it before it could fire as Harry stabbed Aelita. The other Scyphozoa arrived and picked up Harry again. Yumi rolled her eyes and set him free again.

"Do you always have to be picked up by those things?"

"I do try to get away," defended Harry. "But those things are fast and often I have to help out you guys."

Factory

"Hey come on Sleeping Beauty, wake up now! Look, it's your prince charming," said Odd as he shook the worker.

"What's going on? Where am I? My dynamite!" he looked at his partially empty bag. "Where are my explosives?"

"In the factory with a detonator. Can you recall anything?"

"No. Aw, my head."

"You sound just like Harry when Xana attacks," muttered Odd. "Look at this factory. If you had to blow it up, where would you put the detonator?"

"I can't think straight but I think I would put it somewhere high up so the signal can reach all the charges."

"Ulrich, look for it somewhere over your heads," said Odd into his phone. "Somewhere high up."

"I think I found it," said Ulrich as he looked up.

"Where?" asked William.

"Up there." Ulrich rang Jeremy. "Jeremy, we have to evacuate the factory. We found the detonator but there's only a few seconds left."

"We can't leave the others on Lyoko!"

"Give me your belt," ordered William. "I can try to defuse the detonator. I need to use something as a sort of shut."

"You know how to do that?" asked Ulrich as he pulled his belt off.

"My uncle explained it to me. Uh…once."

"O-once?!"

"Once is enough if you're not too dumb. Now get out of here. If this doesn't work, it's stupid for both of us to get blown up."

"If you stay, I stay."

"That makes three of us," said Odd as he arrived. William started ow work on the detonator and managed to stop it.

"Jeremy, William defused the detonator. We're saved."

Jeremy sighed in relief.

Later

"Aw, come on, please," begged William. "I swear I won't tell anyone."

"He doses deserve to be one of us," said Odd. "Besides, we could use a little more help."

"And he's proven already that he can help," said Aelita.

"Well than, let's vote," suggested Jeremy. "If we all agree, then William can become one of us."

They voted.

"Too bad, William…there's one no."

"You're the big losers…I was kind of expecting this might happen…some guys just can't handle being jealous…" moaned William as he walked out.

"That's pretty sad," said Sissi. "I think he could have helped."

"What now?" asked Ulrich.

"What we always do. Return to the past."

The light welled up before bursting out of the factory.

Earlier

"That was pretty uncool, Ulrich! Why'd you vote no?" asked Odd as they sat on their beds.

"Hey, don't look at me! I'm not crazy about William, but he saved us and the factory. He's brave, and he'd make a great Lyoko Warrior! I didn't blackwall him."

"If it wasn't you and if it wasn't me and if it wasn't Jeremy or Aelita or Harry or Sissi, then it was…"

Yumi's house

"Sorry, William…but I don't think you can be trusted," said Yumi as she watched him ride by on his skateboard.
