William returns

Harry collapsed on his bed at three o'clock. Jeremy woke up and looked at him expectantly.

"How did it go?" asked Jeremy. Harry snored. "Tell me about it later."

He closed his eyes and began to snore as well.

The next morning

Harry stared tiredly at his food.

"You ok Harry?" asked Sissi as she rubbed his shoulder gently.

"Just tired. I didn't get much sleep."

"So, how is Lyoko?" asked Ulrich as he sat down.

"Fully recreated. It took me hours!"

"Well, that's to be expected," said Jeremy. "Lyoko is an advanced program. It took Franz many repeats of the same day to create it. It's amazing that you managed to do it in a few hours."

"Recreating Lyoko only took me two hours. Remember, I did have uncle's memories to guide me and I can move faster than anyone. It's the extra features that took me so long."

"Extra features?"

"Like if a sector is to be deleted, the user at the terminal in the factory has to agree to it. I also removed the key in sector five and strengthened the shields on the core of Lyoko. I gave the towers more life points and added durability."

"Anything else?" asked Yumi as she sat down. Ulrich kissed her.

"Expect William to turn up sometime."

"You sure about that?" asked Odd as he scoffed his food.

"I'd be surprised if he didn't. I would also be surprised if he didn't eventually go after me or Aelita."

Milly and Tamiya walked by, discussing something animatedly.

"Weren't those two arguing?" asked Sissi.

"I talked to them. I suggested that they both come up with questions and chose a selection of them as long as they come from both. And that they both ask questions."

"STERN!" Herb stormed over.

"Hello Herb."

"You break up with my Sissi now or else!"

"I'll take the or else."

Herb tried to punch Harry in the face but he moved the minimum distance to avoid it

"Was that necessary? Wake me up when it's time for class."

Harry rested his head on the table and fell asleep.

"I guess he's really tired," said Aelita. "That was a big job he took last night."

Harry snored.

Later

They stood under a tree. Jeremy had gone to the factory to make an excuse for William's absence.

"Well, personally, out of all of the seasons of the year, I like the spring best of all," muttered Herb as he listened to the group from a distance. "Now will you be quiet?"

"I like summer best, because it's nice and warm."

"Quiet, huh? I can't hear anything."

"Well, if you can't hear anything, then I should speak louder, shouldn't I?" asked Nicholas.

"Dork! It's not you I want to listen to!"

"Odd, don't tell me you've been watching Paco the King of Disco again?" asked Ulrich.

"I can't help myself. Whenever I'm in a bad mood, I put the film on. I don't know why he's so ashamed that he used to be an actor."

"It's probably because the film was a flop," said Sissi.

"I don't see what makes their conversation more interesting than ours."

Herb grinned.

Lab

"I can't hear you very well, Mr Dunbar. Are you trying to say that your son, William, has gone overseas to stay with you? And that he won't be attending classes here until you bring him home?" asked Delmas over the telephone.

"Yes, that's correct, sir," said Jeremy as he used the voice synthesiser.

"I see, but it's quite surprising that he would leave without even bothering to tell any of us."

"Uh, it was a very sudden decision. You know how youngsters can be at this age. I'm sure your own daughter, Sissi, is capable of doing the same thing."

"That's very possible, yes. But I didn't realise that you knew my daughter. And by her nickname as well."

"Uh, that is, um, well, actually, I don't really know her, obviously. But well, you see, William, uh, talks so much about her. It's always Sissi-this and Sissi-that and so it's almost as if I really did know her."

"I didn't know that William is such a close friend of Sissi's."

"Well, Sissi is a role model for William. An example. And how could it be otherwise? I mean, considering the sort of honour that she has."

"Thank you Mr Dunbar. I was delighted to have this little chat with you. Please give William my best regards and that we hope he returns to school very soon. He'll always be welcome."

"I'll tell him. Thank you Mr Delmas and many thanks for your understanding."

"You're very welcome sir."

He ended the call and looked at the holomap.

"Harry did an amazing job. It would have taken me ages to reprogram Lyoko and a few sleepless nights. He did it in a few hours. Now all we need is to find William."

He walked to the elevator and went up, not noticing the code that ran across the screen. A scanner opened and smoke poured out.

Kadic

Odd stormed over to Milly and Tamiya. He threw the Kadic News on the bench in between them.

"Do you know what Jim's going to do to me for this?"

The newspaper showed Jim as Paco, the King of Disco. The rest of the group strolled to find to find out what was happening.

"Herb told us that you were alright with it being published. Oh, and since you're all together as usual, I'd like to ask Yumi a few questions for the next issue. What are you waiting for Tamiya? C'mon, we're rolling! Now, Yumi, our readers would really like to know how you and William are getting along."

Odd clenched his fists.

"Uh, W-William, m-me and William?" asked Yumi. "I-I don't know what you're talking about."

"Would you rather I ask the same question to William? He may not be as shy as you are. As a matter of fact, where is he? The last time I saw him was yesterday!" said Milly as she cocked her head.

"H-He's gone abroad. His father called Sissi's father to tell him," said Ulrich quickly.

"Oh, how come you know that, huh?" asked Milly.

"Uh, I uh..."

"I told them," said Sissi. Harry froze.

"Hello William."

"Are you talking about me?" asked William as he appeared out of thin air. Harry looked at him suspiciously. Something flickered in William's eyes.

Few minutes later

"All I can remember is being virtualised on Lyoko and being captured by the Scyphozoa after pushing Harry out of the way. It's a blank after that. That is 'til this morning when I woke up in the factory," explained William. Odd pinched him. "Hey, what are you doing, Odd? You're hurting me."

"Just checking to make sure you're not one of Xana's ghosts."

"No danger of that. There isn't any activated tower on Lyoko. William couldn't have been sent by Xana," said Jeremy as he stood by Harry and checked his laptop. William ruffled Odd's hair. Harry frowned.

"How…?"

"So you can stop pinching me, Odd."

The bell rang.

"Anyhow, you're just in time for a quiz in math," said Yumi as Jeremy whispered something into Harry's ear. Harry nodded.

"Timing, huh? I haven't studied at all."

"So? Since when have you ever studied?"

"Eh heh..."

They ran off.

"Are you sure he's still possessed?" asked Ulrich. "He's acting normally."

"I'm certain," replied Harry as he watched William go. William glanced back and smiled ominously. "It's just that, an act. I could feel Xana's presence in him. I don't know how but he's still under Xana's control. We need an excuse for William's reappearance."

"Hey, what's this?" asked Jim as he marched across.

"A newspaper?" asked Odd. Jim showed him the picture. "Let me see."

Odd looked at the picture and nervously giggled.

"You promised not to tell anyone. To think that I actually trusted you."

"I didn't give the secret away! It was Herb!"

"You must think I'm an imbecile."

He frogmarched Odd away.

Later

William slipped into Harry's and Jeremy's dorm and smiled. Harry was alone. He pulled out a syringe from his pocket and quietly walked over to where Harry was sitting at Jeremy's computer. William attempted to use the syringe on the boy but Harry grabbed his arm in a tight grip.

"You should really know better than to sneak up on me William. Especially considering who's controlling you. Do you really have to smile so much?"

"Xana is pleased."

William yanked his arm free, exposed Harry's arm and jabbed the syringe directly over a vein. He then injected the liquid inside into Harry's bloodstream. Harry pushed William away as he let go.

"I am sorry."

"What on earth was that about?" Harry picked up the syringe and studied it as he scribbled a message. "A sedative. You sedated me. Where did you get the sedative?"

Harry collapsed and William caught him as his eyes turned to the eye of Xana.

"I had no choice. You wouldn't have come with me willingly and if I used any other way of subduing you, it would have attracted too much attention. When you wake, you will be my comrade. You don't need to know where I got the sedative."

Harry tried to struggle but he just got weaker. His vision blurred and turned dark at the edges.

"Go to sleep." Harry's eyes closed and his head fell against William's chest. He picked Harry up and climbed out the window. Somehow no one noticed.

Lab

William placed Harry gently on the floor then walked to the terminal. He started up the delayed virtualisation program then hurried to the elevator. He hit the button and they went to the scanners. William placed Harry in one and stepped in another. A few seconds later the doors closed and they were sent to Lyoko.

Harry's and Jeremy's Dorm

Jeremy walked in and looked around the empty room.

"Harry?"

He noticed the note and read it. "Oh no."

He pulled out his phone and rang Ulrich.

"Jeremy? What's up?"

"Call the others. William took Harry. Meet in the lab. That should be where William would take Harry considering that Xana wants Harry for himself."

"You call Yumi and Sissi. I'll call Odd."

"He's not with you?"

"No. As a matter of fact, I don't know where he is."

Gym

"Go on, keep trying. I'm sure you can do a lot better than that. You remember the scene, don't you? You told me that you watched the film a dozen times," said Jim as he made Odd practice his dance in a ridiculous costume. Odd's phone rang but he couldn't hear it over the loud music.

"But Jim, I swear it's not my fault. I didn't tell anybody."

"You're going to continue until you know the steps by heart. Unless of course you'd like me to change your class instead. Hahaha. All your pals will be so sorry not to have you with them."

"Ok, ok. I get the picture Jim."

Yumi's house

"Odd is right, this film is incredibly funny," said Yumi to herself as she watched Paco, King of the Disco. Her phone beeped and she picked it up. "Just when I was trying to chill out."

She read the text.

Lyoko

The two appeared in sector five. Harry landed on his feet then collapsed to the ground. William smiled.

"So, you are still unconscious. I thought you'd be awake by now. It makes this easier though."

Smoke formed in his hand as he walked over. William sent the smoke out and it hit Harry. It covered him and lifted the boy up. William moved Harry around and started to stroll deeper into the sector. Harry sighed then whimpered.

"Don't leave me. Uncle? 'Lita?"

William turned him upright and observed his face as Harry continued to mutter in his sleep.

"What are you dreaming about?" He shook his head. "I'll find out soon enough."

He returned Harry to the horizontal position and continued to walk. Harry shifted and his eyes flickered open.

Bridge

"Impossible to reach Odd. I've already tried three times," said Ulrich as he ran next to Jeremy.

"Yeah! I'll bet he's living it up somewhere just when we need him!"

Aelita caught up to them.

Lab

"They're not here," said Ulrich as they looked around the deserted lab. Jeremy quickly walked over to the terminal.

"I really don't like this. Get to the scanners Ulrich, Aelita. They're already on Lyoko, in sector five. I don't think William has anything good planned for Harry. Why Harry though?"

"On it." Ulrich and Aelita ran out.

"I'll try to reach Odd again. We'll need him."

He rang Odd but didn't get an answer.

"We're ready Jeremy!"

"Transfer Ulrich. Transfer Aelita. Scanner Aelita. Scanner Ulrich. Virtualisation."

"We're here Jeremy," said Aelita.

"Better step on it while they're not too far away. Take the corridor and I'll guide you."

Lyoko

"William?" asked Harry as he raised his head. "Where are we going? Do you really need two marks on you to symbolise your servitude? Is that a corset?"

"You don't seem surprised to see me. You knew what had happened to me." William continued to move Harry.

"It's hard to hide Xana's presence from me. Xana knows that. I thought you'd bring Aelita too though."

Harry struggled but couldn't free himself. William watched his efforts with amusement.

"Save your energy. You'll need it later for when you join me. And where one goes, the other follows. It makes this so much easier. You can't attack and Aelita isn't as strong as you."

"Well, I guess I know what we're going to find and why you went after me. And Aelita is going to come with back up. But sedatives? Really?"

"It was the only way to get us here unharmed. You know that." William cocked his head. "You did a good job in rebuilding Lyoko."

"Did Xana tell you to say that?"

"We are both impressed. Not everyone can rebuild a program this advanced in a single night."

Harry sighed. "Jeremy said pretty much the same thing and you know I'm not most people."

"True."

A screech echoed throughout the area. William smiled and turned Harry vertical again.

"Oh no. Not that thing again." Harry tensed then broke out of the smoke at the same time as forming an energy field. He threw it and William stumbled backwards. Harry ran.

"So having fun without inviting us. You sure have changed, haven't you?" asked Ulrich. William's sword appeared in a cloud of smoke as he chuckled.

"What do you want with Harry?" asked Aelita. Creepers slithered like snakes behind them.

"Be careful you two. Xana's sent some creepers behind you."

William chuckled as he turned into smoke and followed Harry.

"I thought this was going to be easy," complained Ulrich. Several shuriken impacted the creepers and they blew up.

"I suggest we get moving," said Harry as he shimmered into view. "I may have given William the slip for now but he'll find me again. The sedative is still affecting me so I may fall asleep again. I have no idea why I'm awake to be honest."

Ulrich and Aelita backed away.

"He's behind me, isn't he?"

William used Super Smoke to pass through Harry's legs and faced him.

Lab

The door opened.

"Yumi and Sissi! At last! Head for the scanners fast. Harry, Aelita and Ulrich need you."

"And Odd?" asked Yumi as she pressed the button.

"I've been trying to reach him but I don't know where he is."

Gym

"I can't take any more of this, honestly Jim..." moaned Odd as his phone rang.

"Now that, my friend, is what you should've thought about before talking to the press."

"Ah there he is! I told you! The music!" cried fangirls as they burst through the door.

"Just what are you doing up at this hour, all of you?" asked Jim as he turned the music off. The girls swarmed him.

"You see, Jim, we just watched your disco film. It's incredible too!"

"You mean you liked it that much?"

"It's a masterpiece! Would you give us your autograph, Jim?"

"Uh, yeah, sure. I'd be happy to, if that's what you want..."

Odd slipped out of the disco clothes and ran out of the gym after reading the text.

Lyoko

"You really did have to try to trick me." William touched Harry's face and the ninja flinched away. "Unfortunately for you, I expected something like that to happen. I knew that you'd try to protect your friends. Give up Harry. You can't beat me."

Aelita charged up her energy field and threw it. William nonchalantly moved his head and Harry jumped out of the way. The attack hit the wall.

"First to deal with you..."

William strode towards them as Harry fell to his hands and feet as the sedative took effect again. William covered him in smoke as Harry closed his eyes. Ulrich pulled out his sword and attempted to attack William but a creeper shot him several times. He devirtualised as he threw his sword at the creeper. The creeper blew up. Aelita ran past William to Harry and shook him vigorously.

"Harry, wake up. You have to wake up. We need you."

Harry sighed in his sleep.

"He won't wake." William walked over to Aelita and sent her flying. She hit the wall and fell to the ground. "I'll collect you later."

He studied Harry.

Such an interesting individual. You inspire other people to do the things they think they can't do. Yet you are so unassuming." He shook his head slowly. "You still have to join me."

He started to walk with Harry floating in front of him. A Scyphozoa floated into the room. William smirked and guided Harry into its grasp. The Scyphozoa grabbed him and began to possess him.

"Harry!"

Yumi and Sissi ran in and skidded to a halt. William stood in front of Harry and pulled out his sword.

"You have to separate Harry and the Scyphozoa quickly," said Jeremy urgently. "Harry's sedated so he can't resist. Unless he wakes up which I don't see happening."

"On it."

The two girls ran forward. Sissi fired on William while Yumi headed for the Scyphozoa. William tried to stab Sissi but she dodged.

"You can't interfere! I've come too far for Xana to be denied."

Sissi hit him again. Yumi cut the tentacles and Harry fell to the floor. William smiled.

"You're too late."

Harry kept his eyes closed. He could feel William. Then there was that presence in the back of his mind. He had to follow its orders. There was no choice for him. He had to take Aelita to the digital sea.

"Harry?" Yumi bent down and Harry's mouth twitched. Then he attacked, moving like a striking snake. Yumi gasped as she began to disintegrate. Harry opened his eyes to reveal the eye of Xana. William walked over and helped him up. They stared at each other.

"Oh no. Harry!"

Harry looked at Sissi then slammed her to the wall before she had chance to react. She fell unconscious. The two Xanafied boys looked at each other again then William levitated Aelita. They then started to walk to the celestial dome. Sissi moaned as she opened her eyes.

"Sissi, you need to follow them," said Jeremy. "They're going to do something to Aelita. I don't know what but it's not good. It's bad enough that Harry fell under Xana's control."

"You'll have to give me directions."

She stood and started to run as Jeremy directed her.

Sometime later

The two boys stopped at the interface. Harry looked back and listened. The sound of footsteps echoed.

"I know," said William as he placed his hand on Harry's shoulder. "We're being followed. Forget about your feelings for them. They will only hinder you and make you hesitate. I know you care for the fairy girl. Xana might let you have her if you serve him well. Manta."

Harry relaxed as a black and white manta arrived. William placed Aelita on it as he jumped on. He put his foot on her to keep her in place as reins of smoke formed. Harry's wings appeared and he flew off the edge. Sissi ran out and stared at them.

"Where are they going?"

A tunnel opened and the boys flew through it.

"The desert? Why are they going to the desert?" asked Jeremy in confusion. "There's just the sector and the digital sea over there. Please don't tell me that they plan to throw Aelita in the digital sea. If William and Harry jump in with Aelita, she'll be virtualised for good."

Sissi jumped off the edge and followed them through the tunnel after dodging mines.

Desert

Sissi fired at William who dodged it and sent an energy wave at her. She flew above it. Harry faced her as William landed near the edge of the sector.

"Harry..."

Harry smiled and attacked.

"Don't you remember anything?" asked Sissi as she dodged. "You never wanted to serve Xana."

Harry froze. William watched them.

"Don't listen Harry. She's lying. You did want to serve Xana. They manipulated you into thinking you didn't."

"You tried to stay free for so long. It's sad to see you like this. You're one of us Harry. A Lyoko warrior."

Harry grabbed his head as he fell to the ground. Sissi followed.

"I don't know what you're doing Sissi but it's working," said Jeremy. "I think Harry is starting to resist. Hello Odd."

"I didn't get here too late, I hope."

"It's about time! What were you doing, huh?" asked Jeremy. "We have a big problem. Harry's Xanafied!"

"I was taking a disco dancing class."

"Right. Now get to the scanner room. You're going to go on a little trip."

"Funky!"

"You don't want to hurt us," continued Sissi. "We're your friends."

Harry curled into a ball as his eyes changed between normal and possessed. Sissi bent down and kissed him.

"Sissi..."

"Harry? Are you back?"

Harry looked around as William growled.

"Well, I say he is considering William's reaction," said Odd as he landed on all fours. "I don't think William is too happy about it."

"Let me take care of William."

"Are you sure Harry?" asked Jeremy.

"I'm sure. I don't think William will try to enslave me again so soon. You two, get Aelita out of here."

They nodded and Harry walked over to William who pulled out his sword. Harry pulled out several shuriken.

"I know you Harry. I saw who you are. You will be my comrade."

"Tried that. Didn't like it much. That works both ways William. I know how you fight and who you are. I'm so sorry for what happened to you William."

Harry threw his shuriken and William blocked it.

"You have to do better than that."

Harry smiled and disappeared. William looked around.

"Come out Harry. I know you're not a coward. You will face me."

"You asked for it." Harry stabbed him in the back. He disappeared in red and black smoke.

"Ok Jeremy. You can bring us in."

They disappeared.

Lab

"Glad to have you back with us Harry," said Jeremy as the door entered the lab. "Good thing you left that message."

"How did William get to you anyway?" asked Odd. "You're faster and stronger than him."

"He sedated me. I guess it wore off. And he took me by surprise."

"You think William's gone forever?" asked Ulrich.

"No... I think he just went back to his new master... Xana... I'm sure Harry can shed some light on what Xana is trying to do," said Jeremy. They looked at the boy expectantly.

"Xana is trying to lure out Franz Hopper so Xana can destroy him. Franz is the only one Xana fears apart from me," said Harry. "That's why he needed Aelita. I would have worked as well if Xana hadn't wanted me under his control. He has also infected supercomputers around the world with a sector of Lyoko. William will return. And we need to think up anther excuse for his absence."

"And Delmas might not buy it this time," said Yumi.

"He's kinda scary," said Sissi.

"Don't worry. The real William does want to be free and on our side but he can't do anything. We have to follow Xana's orders when we're Xanafied. He left me a message."

"What did he say?" asked Odd.

"That we should give up on him but if we do free him, he'll try to make up for what he does. He also said that he understands why Lyoko is so dangerous."

"So expect him to be attacking us every time we see him," said Yumi. "Do we still plan to let him back in?"

Jeremy frowned. "I think Harry managed to get through to him in the end. His attitude was more of inexperience and overconfidence."

"And it could have happened to any one of us," said Aelita.

"I think it's time for an upgrade," said Harry as he looked at the supercomputer. "New powers. New outfit. And I need to work out how to use super smoke."

He closed his eyes and looked through his memories.

"What are you hiding Harry?" asked Ulrich.

"Everything William told me was true. It was so easy though I knew that already. And there's a part of me that craves that." The group froze. "It's a really small part but it's there."

Everyone has a worried look on their face.

"Don't worry. I don't intend to join Xana of my own free will any time soon."

"Sorry but we have to go to the gym," said Odd sheepishly as he glanced at the time. "Jim's orders."

Gym

"Hi, Jeremy," said Milly and Tamiya as they passed the group.

"Hello!"

"They don't hate you now?" asked Ulrich.

"I guess they found it in their hearts to forgive me."

"Kinda like us and William!" said Yumi. The others looked at her. "I forgive him for being an idiot. He did pull through for Harry and he truly does want to help us if Harry is to be believed."

"When have I ever lied to you?"

"Paco! Paco! Paco!" shouted the students as Jim started his routine.

"It's incredible! Jim's become a real star!" yelled Odd.

"Mainly thanks to you, right Odd?" asked Ulrich. Odd grinned.

Jim started to dance.

"It's incredible! Real stage presence! A real superstar!" yelled Odd over the noise. Harry rolled his eyes.

"I thought Jim was embarrassed about it."
