Double take

"So then, the guy gets up and starts to scream, "Oh no my canoe just sprang a leak!" Hahahaha! Come on, that's hysterical! The guy thinks his canoe sprang a leak! Oh forget it, you guys have no sense of humour," moaned Odd as they sat on the beds.

"That wasn't funny Odd," said Harry.

"We do. That's the problem," said Ulrich.

"Don't worry, Odd. A sense of humour comes with growing up," said Yumi.

"Come on, I'm the funniest guy in school. In fact, if I wasn't me, I would be president of my own fan club," said Odd. Harry looked out the window. "Still trying to think of a way to free William Harry?"

"Now, that's what I call funny," said Aelita. "President of your own fan club. Not the William part."

"I can't get it off my mind Odd. It's my fault he's under Xana's control. I could have reacted faster."

"Stop beating yourself up," said Sissi. "You couldn't have known what would have happened."

"Do you mind making a little bit less noise?" asked Jeremy irritably. Harry shifted through everything he had on William. "Some of us are trying to work. I've spent a lot of time improving the digital equipment for all of you."

"You know, you could have just asked me to do it," said Harry. "I don't mind."

"You recreated the whole of Lyoko Harry. I wanted to give you time to rest. And while they're doing their bad stand-up act, you're trying to work on a way to free William."

"Hey, it wasn't me, it was him," said Ulrich as he pointed at Odd.

"And if we don't do anything," continued Jeremy. "People are going to start noticing his absence."

"I still think that we should make a clone of William," said Harry.

"Keep it down."

Principal's office

Delmas was playing a game on the computer when the telephone rang.

"Delmas Academy, Jean-Pierre Kadic here, uh... Kadic Academy, Jean-Pierre Delmas speaking." Delmas continued to play his game.

"This is James Dunbar, William's father. I'm calling to say that my son won't be able to attend school this week. He's got a very high fever, and he has to stay in bed," said Jeremy as he used the vocal synthesiser.

"Oh rats! I hope it's not game over for him. Uh, that is to say nothing too serious."

"Just a very bad flu."

"That's a relief. Tell your son that we wish him a speedy recovery Mr Dunbar. Goodbye and thanks for calling."

Harry's and Jeremy's dorm

"Well, that's a relief," said Jeremy. "I don't know what we'd do without my voice synthesiser."

"Well, now that we handled Delmas, maybe we can go to more important stuff," said Odd.

"Yeah? Like what?" asked Jeremy.

"Meatballs and spaghetti!"

"Odd, I know that you're a walking stomach, but I haven't got time to go to lunch. I have to get to the factory to test out the latest codes for your new equipment," said Jeremy.

"I'll come with you," said Harry. "I'll leave a clone for you guys."

"Can you program me some bell-bottom pants with an orange stripe on the side?" asked Odd eagerly.

"Will ya? I need a little thinking time!" said Jeremy irritably.

"What you need is to hear a good joke," said Odd. "You don't laugh enough. Lighten up."

Principal's office

Nicole was showing Delmas how to play the game from earlier, and she won it easily.

"It doesn't look that hard, sir. There we are."

"Hmm, by the way, Nicole, don't you have some work to finish up?" asked Delmas as the phone rang. "What now?"

"James Dunbar speaking. I'm calling you, sir, because I'm getting worried. I haven't heard from my son, William, for several days. And whenever I try to contact him on his mobile, he doesn't pick up," said Mr Dunbar.

"Well, isn't that a shame?" asked Delmas. "I assure you I'll do everything I possibly can to find your son. I'll call the army, the FBI, even the president, so don't worry!"

"Well, there's no need to go that far for now."

"Now listen Mr whoever alias Dunbar, you would do better to think about your own fate and not that of your so-called son once I discover who it is that's calling! So there! Hear that, Nicole?" asked Delmas as he slammed the phone down. "That is the way you have to talk to practical jokers who enjoy playing tricks on you."

"Hmm, there's one thing I don't get. How do you know that he was the practical joker and not the person you spoke to on the phone before? Hmm?" asked Nichole.

Lunch Hall

"You don't want your banana?" asked Aelita as Odd pushed the tray away.

"The world is ending," said Harry.

"No, it's for Einstein. The walking stomach has to look out for the local genius," said Odd.

"Uh oh... Delmas and Incredible Hulk at 11 o'clock..." said Ulrich as he saw the principal and Jim.

"Hello Yumi. I was wondering if you had any news of William Dunbar by any chance?" asked Delmas. "Jim said that you were close friends."

"The last I heard, William was sick," said Yumi.

"Let me handle this Jean-Pierre," said Jim. "Listen, Yumi, be honest with us. I know perfectly well that William isn't any sicker than I am! Achoo!"

"That's for sure," mumbled Harry.

"Bless you, Jim," said Altai.

"Sniff, thank you. If you want to know what I think, I think William is somewhere, and something tells me that somehow you know exactly where that somewhere is and that sometimes it's better to be honest with someone. So uno, somebody should tell William we know he's around, and doso, he ought to get back before tonight. If not, Mr Delmas, our beloved principal, will call some police! That ought to do it," said Jim. Harry frowned as the original paid attention.

"Are you really going to do that Daddy?" asked Sissi. Delmas nodded.

Lab

"No way," moaned Jeremy. "That means I have to slog away all afternoon trying to finish the program to get William out of Xana's control and who knows if it will even work!"

"Or, we could activate a tower and create a clone of William," suggested Harry. "That would give us more time."

"That's impossible," said Ulrich. "We have track this afternoon. You can't keep cutting PE all the time. Once more and you'll be in a lot of trouble. I know Harry cuts it but he leaves a clone in his place."

"Ok. I'll get back to you."

"What are you going to do?"

"Improvise! As usual." He ended the call. "Problem. Being here and in class at the same time. It's not easy."

Kadic

Odd inserted a coin and selected a drink. The machine didn't dispense.

"I don't believe it." He looked around. "I don't believe it."

"He sure got ready fast," said Yumi. Jeremy #2 showed up ready for gym. He threw the can he had just drank from and did some tricks with it before kicking it into the bin.

"Hey everybody."

"You've already finished all you had to do?" asked Aelita.

"Piece of cake, sweetie pie. Huh? What'd you think? Sure, I'm done. You're lookin' at the man. How's it goin', kid? You musta got all dolled up for me today. You wouldn't believe the vibes I'm feelin' right now," said Jeremy #2. Ulrich stood up, Aelita crossed her arms, and both angrily stared at Jeremy #2.

"Hey, go back to being Jeremy, will you?" asked Yumi as she took a step back.

"It's just that whenever I see you I don't feel like I'm myself."

"Xana!" yelled Odd as he attacked Jeremy #2 who sent him flying into the vending machine. The drink dispensed. "Hey! My drink!"

Yumi's phone rang. "Hello?"

"Yumi? Harry said I ought to ring you."

"Jeremy? But then…" she stared at the second Jeremy.

"What do you think guys?"

"Hold on. Do you mind explaining this?"

"You mean you hadn't figured out that I made a double of myself?" asked Jeremy in disbelief. "A digital copy made by activating a tower on Lyoko. This way, I can work on Lyoko and be in gym class at the same time. Harry was right when he told me to call you."

"You might have warned us Einstein," said Odd as they crowded around the phone.

"Sorry."

"Anyway, you ought to know that your double has gotta be about the biggest flirt I ever met," said Yumi as she pointed the camera at the clone.

"Very strange. Must be some kind of emerging quality that appeared unexpectedly," said Jeremy. "Anyway guys, I might not have hit a home run with it but a double is still pretty good."

Class

Jim took the register.

"Belpois?"

"Present," said the clone as it held its hands in the air.

"No, this has to be a dream," said Jim. "Jeremy Belpois in person? He has honestly decided to grace us with his presence? In the flesh? Although there isn't a lot of it."

"You could say the same about me Jim and I'm the fastest runner on the team," said Harry.

"True. After holding the longest record of absences from every single sport, Mr Skin and bones has decided to use his time to through his weight around."

"And so it was in 1671 that Isaac Newton created his famous reflection telescope. And as I'm sure you can see on this very rare and precious model of it..." said Ms Hertz in her class. Most of the students were sleeping.

"Okay, lemme get outta the line of fire before I give you the signal. Hold on..." said Jim as he moved out of the way of the clone with a shotput.

"Newton and his law of gravity, the apple that fell..."

Jeremy threw the javelin through the window to Mrs. Hertz's classroom, and it broke the telescope. Ms Hertz walked to the window to yell at Jim.

"Holy tolito, Belpois. I mean incredible, Belpois! How could you throw that thing so far with arms as scrawny as the wings of a chicken, huh?" asked Jim.

"Uh well, you see, Jim, he's been working out a lot. Haha..." Odd's laughter stopped.

"Jim! You're worse than those barbarians who burned down the Alexandria Library!" yelled Ms Hertz.

"Thank you, Susanne!" she snorted and returned to her class. "Jeremy, you're going to participate in the interschool competition against the top student gymnasts! Those dodos at Central Prep won't know what hit them!"

Lyoko

"I don't believe it. Harry, you need to get over there now."

William walked over to the edge of the crater with several tarantulas. He stabbed his sword in the ground.

"Go on." He turned to the one on his left. "You too. He'll come... He always does. He is linked to this world."

The tarantulas took up their positions. William started to levitate as he focused on the tower.

Class

Ulrich's phone rang and he picked up.

"Now, let me see how you through the javelin," said Jim as he handed one to the clone. The clone spun it round.

"Jeremy, this had better be important," said Ulrich.

"It sure is. Xana's attacking the tower that I activated. If it keeps up, Xana will take control and use it for his own purposes."

"I get the idea," said Ulrich as he watched the clone. "How do we get the process to stop?"

"I can send some of sector five's energy to shore up the defences to buy a little time. I'm sending Harry over to deal with William."

"Are you sure about that?" asked Ulrich. "You know William is after Harry."

"We don't have much of a choice."

The clone eyes changed.

Lyoko

The aura turned red and William landed. He smiled slightly.

"Transfer Harry. Scanner. Virtualisation."

Harry appeared nearby. The ninja looked at what he was wearing and grinned. "Just what I wanted."

Jeremy sent more energy to the tower and caused it to turn green again. William glared at the tower and levitated again.

"I hope this works," muttered Harry as he turned into smoke that sparked orange. He zoomed off and reformed behind a rock. He picked up a stone and threw it up a few times. William levitated as he refocused on the tower.

Kadic

The clone threw the javelin and went through the tool shed's window.

"What do you think you're doing?!"

"Yahoo! Yeah! I'm going to be your personal manager, Belpois. Wait 'til they get a load of this. You and me, we're going to go far. Trust me, we're going to taste the thrill of victory. We're going to breeze through the championships, the nationals, the planetaries, the interplanetaries, the intergalactics!" yelled Jim enthusiastically.

"To the factory..." murmured Ulrich. They tried to leave only to be stopped unexpectedly by Jim.

"Stern! Della Robbia! Go on! Pick yourselves a lane and let's see how you run the 400 meters against Belpois." Ulrich and Odd got in place. "You ready, champ?"

They started and the clone zoomed off.

Lyoko

William landed as the tower turned red again. Jeremy sent more energy to the tower. William growled as the tower turned back to green. The stone hit his head and he spun around to glare at Harry.

"I can't have Xana attacking my friends."

The tarantulas started to fire at him. Harry rolled his eyes and turned into smoke again. He reformed and stabbed one with his modified version of William's sword. "Looks like the changes I made worked then."

"Remind me what you did," said Jeremy.

"I just removed the growth like parts on it. It's just like William's except for that."

Kadic

Xana took control of Jeremy #2. He stopped and waited. The clone jumped on Odd and tried to punch him when Jeremy regained control of the tower. Odd pushed him off.

"Della Robbia! You'd better be careful not to rough up my champion! You okay, kid?" asked Jim as the clone got up.

"I'm good, Jim."

"Okay... Better safe than sorry is what I always say. Any volunteers to go with Belpois to the infirmary?" asked Jim. The five put their hands up.

"I'm off to the factory with Aelita. Isolate Jeremy 2 and watch him," murmured Ulrich.

"Yeah, right, easy for you to say..." replied Odd. Ulrich pulled out his phone and sent Yumi a text. Harry's clone disappeared as they rounded the corner.

Yumi

Yumi glanced at it then stood up.

"Ma'am, can I please leave the room?"

Ms Hertz banged her head. "Ouch! Yes, go. You haven't seen any pieces of mirror around, have you?"

Odd

"If the Olympic champion could please step this way," said Odd as he opened a door. The clone walked in and Odd slammed the door. Sissi pushed the lockers in front of the door.

"That should delay him."

Lyoko

Harry stabbed another tarantula.

"Cease fire!" The remaining tarantula stopped firing and looked at the boy. "Good to see you again Harry. I've been expecting you. Are you here to join me?"

Harry stared at him. "Of course not. I'm here to stop you taking control of the tower."

"You can't stop me." William turned back to the tower and concentrated as he rose.

"What are you doing Harry? I can't send any more energy."

Harry looked at his sword and light immediately filled the blade. He swung it and the wave nearly hit William as the tower glowed red. Harry then jumped into the crater and attempted to enter the tower. William followed him and grabbed his arm.

"You're not deactivating it!"

"Let me go!" Harry punched William who grabbed his other arm. "We could do this all day but I don't have the time."

"You will serve Xana." The Scyphozoa rose behind William. Harry gulped. "This time, you don't have your friends to help free you. You can't resist."

Harry turned into smoke and William stumbled forward. Harry reformed on the other side of the tower and faded out of view.

"You could do that." William walked round. "Come out Harry. I know you're there. You can't hide from me."

Harry backed up against the tower, accidentally kicking a pebble. William looked at it and then at the tower. He reached forward and grabbed Harry. Harry struggled but William tightened his grip. The Scyphozoa wrapped its tentacles around him and lifted him up. Harry growled.

"You know what's happening. You know how easy it is to submit."

Harry faded out of existence.

"Stop doing that!"

Elsewhere

Ulrich, Aelita and Yumi stepped in the scanners.

"We're ready Jeremy."

"Alright then. Transfer Ulrich. Transfer Yumi. Transfer Aelita. Scanner Yumi. Scanner Ulrich. Scanner Aelita. Virtualisation."

"Twin blades," said Ulrich as he twisted to look at them then pulled them out. "Perfect for a close shave."

"I love your skirt Aelita," said Yumi as she looked at it.

"Thanks. Your shoulder pads aren't bad either."

"Hey, you can discuss fashion later. Harry needs you. William is stopping him from deactivating the tower. It's north by north west."

Harry

Harry watched him from the crater's path. William looked up at him before using super smoke to travel over to him.

"You can't escape me Harry."

"Keep telling yourself that," said Harry. "You know what I'm capable of. And I'm not the boss."

He disappeared as well. William spun around and looked at the tower. No one there.

"Where are you?"

Harry sneaked past him but he slipped on a loose stone. William smirked as Harry reappeared. Harry backed away. The Scyphozoa snuck up behind him. Harry glanced alternately between William and the monster.

"You're trapped Harry. There is nowhere for you to go." Harry looked down. "No. Don't even think about it."

"Get away from my brother!"

Ulrich rode down on the Overbike. Harry smiled as William glared at Ulrich.

"It doesn't matter. You'll join me no matter what Harry."

The Scyphozoa struck. It spun Harry around and placed three tentacles on his head. Harry focused as William attacked Ulrich. Ulrich jumped off the Overbike and William placed the tip of his sword on the ground. The Overbike plunged into the digital sea. Aelita and Yumi faced several tarantulas.

The Scyphozoa screeched and sent Harry flying. He landed hard on William as Ulrich devirtualised. Harry glanced at his shoulders as two swords fizzled into existence.

"I hoped that would happen."

Kadic

Odd spun a broom as the lockers started to shake.

"Oh great, here we go again," muttered Odd as he and Sissi tried to keep the door shut. "Hey, stop pushing, will ya? Dontcha like it in there?"

The clone pushed the lockers over.

"What is going on around here?" asked Delmas as he walked over. "Just who do you think you are Belpois?"

"No big deal, he's just a little bit edgy," said Odd nervously as he held the broom over his head.

"A little bit edgy?" asked Sissi. "He's really edgy."

"Now, now, try to calm down Belpois," said Delmas. "Don't you think that talking it out would be more constructive than lashing out blindly?"

"Xana won't listen," muttered Sissi as Delmas was sent into the wall. Odd tried to attack the clone but was sent flying. He landed on top of the principal.

"Thanks a lot for the psychology lesson, sir. Now I've gotta catch him."

They ran to the manhole and Odd pulled out his phone.

"Jeremy, your evil, Xana possessed copy is on its way to the factory. He's too fast for us to catch up to. You're on your own good buddy."

"Ok Odd. I'll see what I can do."

Lab

Jeremy started to control the elevator.

Lyoko

Harry jumped up and started towards the tower. William growled and moved in front of him to block Harry's path.

"I told you that I wouldn't let you deactivate it."

"That doesn't stop me trying William."

Aelita was knocked off the edge of the crater and pink wings spread out, keeping her from falling.

"Where did these wings come from?"

"You like them?" asked Jeremy, "They're just a little surprise I invented in my spare time."

"Jeremy, you are the wind beneath my wings!"

Yumi fell and Aelita flew after her. William ran ti the edge and watched, leaving Harry with a path to the tower. Aelita caught Yumi and flew her to safety.

"Aelita... you're an angel!"

William started when he saw Harry near the tower. He took the direct route with his super smoke.

"Do you really have to focus on me?"

"You're the best fighter."

Factory

The clone jumped down and punched the keypad. The elevator went up. Jeremy locked the door into the lab.

Lyoko

Harry groaned as the Scyphozoa approached him again.

"Do you mind telling that thing to back off?"

William pushed Harry back then looked up at a tarantula.

"Come on."

It jumped onto the platform. Harry held his arm out and fired. The tarantula exploded.

Factory

"He leaves an impression wherever he goes," said Odd as the two stared at the damaged keypad.

Lyoko

"Yumi, watch out. You've lost forty life points," warned Jeremy. A tarantula jumped in front of her and her fan destroyed it. Aelita threw an energy field at William but William blocked it with his sword.

Factory

The clone forced the door open.

"Odd? Where are you?" asked Jeremy into his microphone. The clone passed electricity between his hands.

"Hello Jeremy one and two," called Odd as he and Sissi jumped down. "BONZAI!"

Odd knocked the clone to the floor.

"You may be his evil twin but you're not the fighting twin." Odd looked at the splintered end of the broom. "Can I take back what I said?"

The clone sent Odd into the computer, knocked Jeremy out of his chair then focused on Sissi. It grabbed her.

Lyoko

William glanced up then looked at Harry.

"If you don't submit, your friend will be liquidated."

"Which one?" asked Harry.

"The fairy."

"Sissi…"

Aelita landed and entered the tower.

"I think that threat has just run out," said Harry.

"You know, you could have just used your override code," said William as the tower turned from red to white.

"Which I have no idea how to use."

"You do. You just don't realise it."

William travelled over to Yumi.

"Jeremy! William's trying to push me into the Digital Sea," said Yumi as he placed his sword under her chin.

"I'll bring you back in."

Harry ran out of the Scyphozoa's grasp and attempted to help Yumi. Several monsters appeared and blocked his path.

"It's not working!"

"What do you expect?" asked Sissi as they looked at the sparking terminal. "It's breaking up."

"There's one thing left to do," said Odd as the two ran to the scanners.

William removed his sword and stepped closer to Yumi. He touched her cheek before pushing her off the path.

"Yumi!" Harry jumped off as Yumi grabbed William's arm and they both fell. Odd caught Yumi.

"You didn't think I'd let you down, would you?" asked Odd. Sissi ran to the edge and looked down.

"Too late."

"Hey, what do you think of my new outfit, huh?" asked Odd as they flew back up.

"Uh..."

"Yeah, that's what I think too!"

Harry and William reached the digital sea.

"Oomph." Harry caught his breath then looked down. "I don't believe this."

"Is he standing on the digital sea?" asked Sissi. William slipped into the digital sea. Harry turned to smoke then joined the other four. Harry looked at Sissi.

"That looks good on you."

"I could do with a little less spandex," said Sissi.

"Return to the past now."

Lab

"So, there's no way of bringing him back, right?" asked Aelita.

"Not for the time being," said Jeremy.

"There is," said Harry. "Xana knew of a way but he kept it hidden so I couldn't reproduce it."

"Have you got a plan B?" asked Yumi.

"We haven't' got a choice," said Jeremy. "We have to make a copy of William."

"Isn't that a little risky?" asked Ulrich.

"Yep. But it's the only way of calling off Jim and Delmas."

"Ok but don't ever ask me to take the clone to the infirmary," said Odd then he turned to Harry. "And since when could you walk on the digital sea?"

"I don't know. Apparently, I also know how to use my override code but don't realise it."

Kadic

The group waited for Yumi and William to appear.

"Hopefully, William's copy hasn't developed emerging qualities like someone else I know," said Odd as Yumi and William appeared.

"At this distance, he looks normal," said Aelita.

"But up close?" asked Ulrich as Delmas walked over.

"Well, Dunbar, my boy, I'm glad to see that your fever has broken and you're feeling well," said Delmas.

"Uh, did I break anything else?" asked William. Harry groaned.

"Ah, hahaha! Uh, don't forget to keep taking your medicine, say?"

"Well, we're not out of the woods yet!" said Odd.
