Bragging rights

Yumi, Harry and Ulrich ran down a corridor with cybernetic spiders after them.

"Uh-oh! To think this was supposed to be a piece of cake!" moaned Ulrich as the three were surrounded.

Several hours earlier

"I'll say it once more, for those of you who were daydreaming. 1, run up. 2, jump onto the springboard. 3, push off of the horse. 4, pike vault and 5, land feet together on the mat! You got that?" asked Jim.

"No, I didn't get it at all, coach. So would you mind giving us a demonstration, Jim?" asked Herb.

"What's the matter with you, Pichon? There's nothing to it, only a halfwit couldn't manage it!"

"I hope you and Sirius haven't pranked it Odd," said Harry as Odd counted down. Jim ran and the students lashed as Jim was forced into a princess outfit as well as being in an embarrassing position. Glaring at the students, Jim focused on Herb who gulped nervously and looked like a rabbit caught in the headlights.

"Pichon! Funny, huh? Let's see what you can do, and don't forget those five golden rules!" yelled Jim. Herb ran forward, tripped, hit the spring and landed on the mat, missing the horse entirely. The students laughed again.

"That horse would be in the Rodeo!"

"Della Robbia! Front and centre, it's your turn to fall flat on your face!"

Clearing his throat, Odd walked forward before running and performing the pike vault perfectly.

"Well how was that?" asked Odd. "You're right, Jim, only a halfwit couldn't manage it!"

Later

"Come on! I don't believe it, I do a vault worthy of the Olympics and bam, four hours of detention! Is that the kind of payoff I deserve?" moaned an annoyed Odd.

"Well…yeah," said Ulrich.

"Huh?"

"Come on, Odd, the way you spoke to Jim was…" Ulrich searched for a word.

"Was what?" asked Odd impatiently.

"Obnoxious, pretentious?"

"Aggravating?" suggested Harry as he joined the two.

"Pretentious?! No-one's more humble than I am!" yelled Odd.

"Who are you trying to kid?" asked Jeremy. "Your middle name ought to be Braggart, Odd!"

"That's for sure, I can't remember even one day that you didn't sing your own praises," piped in Aelita.

"And you have as long as I've known you," said Sissi.

"Hey, that is so wrong! Stop ganging up on me! And I can prove it to you too!" yelled Odd.

"Ok, I bet you a week of desserts that you can't go 24 hours without bragging!" offered Ulrich.

"You're on! I know someone who's just won himself some yummy seconds!"

"Yeah, me!"

"Uh-uh, me!"

"No, me."

"Stop arguing," said Sissi with a face palm.

"Hey, are you guys all through?" asked Jeremy impatiently. "Maybe I ought to remind you that we're supposed to be blowing up Xana's supercomputer tonight after class!"

"In the jungle? You mean we're going back already?" asked Ulrich eagerly

"That's right, and we don't think it'll be a problem: Odd knocked out the energy fields protecting it last time," said Aelita.

"And once again where mere mortals would have failed, Odd demonstrates his great…uh…um, modesty and humility." Odd corrected himself at the last moment.

"So thanks to our non-bragging hero, it's going to be a piece of cake," said Jeremy with a smile.

After class

They rode through the sewers and into the factory.

Digital sea

"I'm entering the coordinates of the replika. You should be able to see it soon."

"I'm already in position."

Aelita activated the digital key and Jeremy unlocked the entrance. The two subs split and joined onto towers which Jeremy activated.

"Are you ready?"

"As ready as I'll ever be," said Harry with a shrug.

"I don't want to go," said Sissi quickly.

"Teleportation Ulrich, Teleportation Yumi. Teleportation Harry."

Jungle

"You're the greatest Jeremy! Your teleportation worked," said Ulrich as they appeared.

"And it's pretty accurate! We're in the middle of the lab," added Yumi.

"Stop it guys. I'll get a swelled head like Odd if this carries on."

"I don't have a swelled head!" yelled Odd. "And I don't see why I wasn't teleported!"

"Got to give everyone a chance to have fun, Odd," said Jeremy with a smile.

"And if the only dessert you want to eat for a week is humble pie, just keep it up," added Aelita.

"Ok Jeremy, which way is it?" asked Ulrich.

"Head east. You'll go through a door, then go straight and a little further on at your left, you should see the door to the supercomputer room!"

"Got it, we're on it!"

"You know bro, you could have just asked me," said Harry as they moved.

"Yeah, what if you get defeated?"

"I never get defeated."

"Xana could take control of the tower powering your teleportation."

"Good point."

They peered in through the window at the computer.

"We found it!"

"Now all you have to do is open the door and trash it," said Jeremy. Yumi pressed buttons and the control beeped before turning red.

"Jeremy, why can't I get the door open?"

"Oh right, the last time, Harry hacked the controls to open it. Hang on, I'll figure out something… We can't rely on him being there to help."

"Him is right here," interrupted Harry with a small growl.

"Calm down Harry," said Ulrich as he placed a calming hand on Harry's shoulder. "I think you're picking up some of Xana's traits. Let me handle this!"

"Uh Ulrich, wait!"

"Er, too late…" Ulrich pulled out his sword from the wreckage of the controls.

"Great, now the panel's dead and the door's still locked," muttered an annoyed Yumi.

"What an idiot! I said to wait, Ulrich!"

"Well you should have said it sooner! What do we do now?" asked Ulrich.

"I'll see what I can do with the wreckage," said Harry

"Cut the power," suggested Jeremy. "That would open the door."

"You know where the generator is?" asked Ulrich.

"Yeah, I'll guide you there!"

"I'll stay here and keep an eye out for Harry. As soon as it opens, I'll go in and get rid of supercomputer," said Yumi.

"Ulrich, turn around and go back to the first intersection, then take the corridor on the right!"

"I'm on my way, Einstein!"

Harry removed the pieces of screen and looked at the circuitry underneath.

Replika

"Jeremy? Can you hear us?" asked Aelita. "Everything ok?"

"Just a little problem. No sweat. Everything's cool."

"You sure?" asked Odd. "I'd love to go help Ulrich and Yumi."

"I think they'll be fine. Harry's there and he will keep an eye out. Anyway, I've just spotted an activated tower."

"We're on it Jeremy," said Aelita. "Get ready to disembark Odd."

They disappeared and reappeared by the tower.

"Einstein, could you send us our.." The Overboard appeared.

"You were saying Odd?"

"Thanks."

"We have a problem here two," said Aelita as she spotted movement.

"I see William and three hornets. I'm surprised Xana's not sent anything to bring Harry back."

"Should Odd stay here while I go deactivate the tower?" asked Aelita.

"The tower's too far away and Odd could never take them on alone."

"Three hornets and Sir William? I can take them."

"Don't forget about me," interrupted Sissi.

"Isn't that bragging?" asked Aelita.

"No it's the truth." Odd brought up his shield and deflected the shots. "See?"

"Just hold William off long enough for Ulrich to neutralise the generator and for Harry and Yumi to destroy the computer."

"I think William heard you say where Harry was," said Aelita nervously as William paused and cocked his head before using super smoke. "He's heading towards the Lightning along with the hornets."

Odd jumped on the Overboard and followed him. Sissi jumped off the path and flapped her wings. Aelita shook her head.

"Ulrich, do you read me? Where are you?" asked Jeremy as he contacted him.

"In front of the generator!"

"That's great, tell me how it looks!"

"Well…it's this huge machine with a bunch of flashing thingamajigs all over it," said Ulrich as he stared at it.

"Ok, now just neutralise the commutator that powers the lab doors.

"The commu-what?" asked Ulrich.

"The button! Do you see a little red button?" asked Jeremy impatiently.

"There's not just one, there are millions of them! This thing's lit up like a pinball machine!" explained Ulrich with slight urgency. "Which one?"

"Just proceed by elimination."

"No, I'm going to do this my way."

"Your way, huh, Ulrich? Like, smashing up the generator with your sabre and short-circuiting the supercomputer?" asked Jeremy in confusion.

"You guessed it!"

"Uh…give me a minute to think it over!"

Replika

Reforming, William stared at the Lightning before approaching. The sub shot a rocket and William used super smoke again to dodge it.

"Laser Arrows!" Odd took out two of the hornets. "If I tell them, they'll say I'm bragging!"

"Well, someone's head is becoming less swollen," called Sissi. William eyed her with interest.

Jungle

Repeatedly opening and closing get fan, Yumi raised an eyebrow as smashing noises echoed down the corridor. Putting herself of the wall, she strolled down the corridor.

"Don't go too far Yumi." Harry hummed at the circuitry. "I might be able to work with this."

He passed his hand to the remains and closed his eyes.

"Jeremy? Remind me of what there is in the vivarium?" asked Yumi as she entered the room.

"Cybernetic spiders."

"Hm…"

One dropped down near her and another came at her from the side.

"You guys are ugly!" A spider leapt and knocked her over. she kicked it, flipped over and sent a fan out before running. The spiders followed her "I've had enough of your cyber spider web! Jeremy, those cyber spiders are being controlled by Xana, and they're just behind me!"

"Not for long, the supercomputer should be offline in just a couple of seconds. Ulrich, your idea isn't big on finesse, but it should work. Do it!"

"Ok!" Ulrich stabbed it and the power turned off.

"Hey Jeremy, whenever you want for that short circuit!" called Yumi urgently as she backed against a door. the spiders clicked as they advanced.

"Right now!"

The spiders deactivated.

Replika

Odd dodged the hornet as it flew off. "Where's it going?"

"I guess we'll never know," said Sissi as she shot it. "And I don't like the way William is looking at me."

"I guess it is pretty creepy," said Odd as he glanced at William. "Looks like he has plans for you Sissi. What's happening Jeremy?"

"We've finished."

"Already?" asked Odd in surprise. William walked over to the tower. "Oh no you don't pretty boy."

William grunted as the arrow hit him before looking up.

"Energy field!"

William dodged and glared at Aelita who charged up another one and threw it. He dodged again

"Aelita, the Replika is disappearing. better get airborne."

Aelita's wings popped out as she waved her hand over her bracelet. William clenched his fist before dropping out of sight with a yell as the Replika disappeared.

"That's what I call a real swan song dive," called Odd after him.

Jungle

"I told you this was going to be a piece of cake! You can head for the Skid now, your mission's over, guys! Are you ready, Ulrich? I'm Teleporting you back," said Jeremy.

"Ah! Uh, hold on, I think something's up!" The lights came back on.

"What?" asked Jeremy in confusion.

"The power's back on!"

Alarms blared.

Replika

"Uh, Jeremy, is the Replika supposed to be regenerating?" asked Odd as he, Sissi and Aelita landed.

"Nope. Ulrich, there has to be a back up generator somewhere."

"Well duh Jeremy. even I could have figured that out. Only where is it?"

"How would I know?" snapped Jeremy. "I'm looking for it…"

"Cool it Jeremy," called Harry.

"Better hurry up. I'm going back to Yumi!"

"Jeremy? How come you haven't teleported us back yet?" asked Yumi. "And what's that alarm?

"Oh, someone'll hang up, nothing important!"

"Sounds like an intruder alarm to me," said Harry as he caught up to Yumi. Hearing clicking, they turned around to see the spiders. One caught Yumi in a web. Harry cut it easily before stabbing it.

"Come one," called Ulrich as he ran past. "Harry, lead us to the back up generator."

Harry took the lead. "Take care of those spiders Jeremy."

Replika

"Aelita, take care of the tower. Odd and Sissi, you protect the Skid and the Lightning."

"Why do I have to stay while everyone else is having fun," moaned Odd.

"Odd..."

"That wasn't bragging." William formed and growled. "Great. somebody turned up who wants to play with me. go on Aelita."

Aelita jumped on the Overboard and flew off as William charged, dragging his sword along the floor. Odd jumped back.

"Feel like playing tag?"

Sissi shot William who dodged and hit her with smoke before listing her out of reach.

"Now that's just unfair and cruel. Using Sissi to get to Harry. He's going to be mad you know. You won't like him when he's mad."

William raised an eyebrow.

Jungle

The three continued to run before running into more spiders.

"Uh-oh! To think this was supposed to be a piece of cake!" moaned Ulrich as the three were surrounded.

"Aelita, better hurry. Harry, Ulrich and Yumi are in a big jam."

"I've still got a way to go Jeremy."

Harry shot a spider.

Replika

"For Xana!" yelled William as he attempted to hi Odd. Odd dodged and looked down before running through William's legs.

"For me!" He hit William with a laser arrow. "Stings, doesn't it?"

"Super smoke!" Od fired at the smoke for them to harmlessly pass through. William reformed behind him and swung his sword for Odd to dodge multiple times before getting knocked off the edge. Smiling smugly, William state to turn before hearing a whistle. He looked down to be hit by a laser arrow and dispersed into smoke. Sissi grunted as she hit the ground.

"Odd, did you just blow William away by yourself?" asked Jeremy in disbelief as William's icon disappeared on the screen.

"Yep!"

"No boasting?"

"What do you think I am, a braggart?" asked Odd.

"I'm just glad to be out of that smoke," said Sissi with a shiver. "What did William want?"

"Ah, he probably wanted to use you as a bargaining chip against Harry," said Odd dismissively.

"I just found the axillary generator."

Jungle

"We're already know where it is Jeremy," called Harry as he blew up a spider.

"And it's a little bit too late," called Ulrich as a spider jumped onto Yumi and Ulrich.

"Yumi! Ulrich!"

Replika

"Jeremy? you there?" asked Odd as he returned to the Skid. "What happened to the two lovebirds?"

He looked in the windows to see Yumi and Ulrich sleeping. "I get it. they knocked each other out. I guess we blew our mission."

"Not at all. Harry's still on earth and I found the auxiliary generator. I'll teleport you to help out."

"When I go, don't say I'm pretentious."

Jungle

"What now?" asked Odd as he looked around.

"Get out of the lab, and watch out for spiders!"

"I can't see any hairy legs yet!" called Odd.

"Well I can, Odd," said Jeremy as he watched two tarantulas approach the Skid. "Ulrich, Yumi! You have to wake up. If the Skid goes, so do you!"

They continued to sleep as the Tarantulas fired.

"Jeremy, I'm out of the lab. Which way now?" asked Odd.

"Go left. You should run right into the auxiliary generator!"

"Or I could follow the trail of general destruction," suggested Odd as he saw a spider being knocked back. "And meet up with Harry."

"This generator is pretty popular," said Harry with a small smile. "There's a ton of spiders."

They peered around the corner at the spider guards.

Replika

"Aelita, you need to deactivate the tower."

"I'm almost there Jeremy. oh no."

Several Hornets flew down and started to fire. one hit the Overboard and destroyed it. They concentrated on Aelita causing her to devirtualise.

Jungle

"Harry..."

"Let me guess, we're on our own," said Harry.

"You'd better make it fast Harry otherwise we'll lose the Skid. Along with Ulrich and Yumi."

"GERONMIO!" yelled Odd as he ran out. with a shake of the head, Harry followed, throwing shuriken everywhere. "Do your mojo Harry!"

Sniggering, Harry hit the generator which caused it to explode.

"That's not what I meant Harry."

"Deteleportaion Odd. Deteleportation Harry."

"Hey, nice place you've got here Aelita," said Odd as he appeared in the cockpit. Sissi arrived and hit the tarantulas.

"What's going on?" asked Ulrich as he woke up.

"Nothing. everything's cool. go back to sleep," said Odd as Jeremy transferred Sissi back to the Skid.

"You can come back, Odd! It's over," said Jeremy as the Replika's supercomputer exploded.

The Skid detached and dived into the digital sea with Harry following a few seconds later. the Replika disappeared and the sphere containing it exploded.

"You were right, you know. You couldn't have asked for an easier mission," said Aelita as Jeremy took off the earpiece in relief.

The next day

"He took out William on his own and helped take out the supercomputer!?" asked Ulrich in disbelief. "That's crazy!"

"What's crazier is that he hasn't bragged about it even once," added Jeremy.

"That's weird!"

"Who knows? Maybe he's changed."

"You mean he's suddenly become humble?" asked Ulrich with a raised eyebrow.

"Miracles happen! He might have become a sensible, responsible kid!"

"You are now looking at the record holder for the fastest shower!" yelled Odd as he skidded in. "Give me an O! Give me a D! Give me a D! who's the name of the century! It's Odd! Oh I like it when I break records like that!"

"Or maybe not," said Harry with a wry smile.

"Odd..." started Ulrich

"You can have my deserts."

"Just like that?" Ulrich said in surprise.

"Got to face facts. I'm a braggart and I love it that way."
