Alice POV

"Witches," gasped Edward into the phone.

"What?" I said, frowning in confusion.

"The Volturi," he hissed. "They have witches on their side."

I didn't even know that witches existed. How did the Volturi get them? Not being able to see the future was annoying. I could have prevented this with my power.

Carlisle grabbed the phone from Edward. "Alice," he said. "Edward's right. I've only ever seen one, decades ago, and I never suspected that the Volturi would find some. I don't know much about them, but I think they cast a spell around the Volturi to keep them immune to any powers, including your's and Edward's."

"Wait," I said. "If Edward couldn't read Aro's mind, or anyone's for that matter, how'd you find out?"

"We snuck in the castle," Edward said in the background. I groaned. Trust Edward to almost ruin everything.

"Okay," I said. "Come home right now. I'll call Em and Jazz and tell everyone here."

"Right," said Edward and hung up. I ran into the living room, and almost crashed into Stephenie.

"Whoa, Alice!" she said. "Where are you going?"

"I'll explain when everyone gets here," I said, and ran and told everyone to meet me there.

Two minutes later, everyone squeezed into our living room. It wasn't small by any means, but with this many people, it was bound to by crowded. I climbed on top of Edward's piano.

"Okay, everyone," I started, and the chatter died down.

I took a deep breath. I was frustrated, because I couldn't see how not being able to use powers would affect the battle. At least with Bella, they couldn't harm us, either. At least, not using powers.

"Edward and Carlisle have reported back from Volterra. According to them, we can't use any of our powers on the Volturi."

"Why?" said Stefan and Vladimir simultaneously from the back.

"I'm getting to that," I snapped. "The Volturi have somehow gotten...witches."

Everyone started talking at once.

"Wait!" I said. "We have to work around this. Otherwise, we'll all die."

Everyone quieted down, and it became dead silent.

"I have an idea," said Stephenie slowly. "But I need to talk to Carlisle first."

I dialed his number and handed the cellphone to her. She pressed the phone to her ear, all the vampires surrounding her, hanging onto her every word.

"Why don't you go outside?" I told Stephenie as everyone stared at her.

She nodded, grateful, and went into the backyard. Before she left, she pulled Bella aside and told her something. Bella nodded, and left the room.

Stephenie was outside for about ten minutes. She came back in, and stood next to me.

"What'd he say?" I hissed to her. She just held a finger up.

"Okay," she said when everyone was paying attention. "My plan was that a few of us attack the witches separately, and then use any powers on the rest of the Volturi. But according to Carlisle, the witches won't be there. They're actually leaving, since the Volturi don't need them anymore. But Aro's planning to kill the witches. The spell will still be around the Volturi, though, so we can't do anything about it."

Just then, Bella ran in. "Wait," she said. "There's a way to remove the spell."

"How?" I said, surprised.

She bit her lip. "A sacrifice. Four of them. A human, a vampire, a shape-shifter, and a witch."

"No way," I said as the room burst out in growls and hisses. "We're not sacrificing anyone. We'll do this powerless. It's okay."

"But we are still outnumbered," pointed out Esme.

"Barely," I said back. "Plus, we have something they don't."

"Which is?" asked someone from the back.

"Renesmee," I said, smiling mysteriously.
