The hunter and the siren ended up in The Holy Spirits for their date. While the location was not the most romantic destination in the universe, it was one of the best places for a couple to meet on Pandora considering the planet wasn't exactly famous for its romantic sites. If nothing else, the food wasn't bad and the drinks were better than most. When it came down to it, the Overlook bar served the situations needs (not to mention The Holy Spirits was one of the few date worthy placesaround not owned by Mad Moxxi. Given Mordecai's history with the flirtatious woman, running into her while he was trying to woo Lilith was something the pair wanted to avoid). However, despite adequate setting, conversation was proving to be difficult.
"So-" Mordecai had tried to start after the two had sat through a relatively (awkwardly) silent meal, leading into even quieter (and more awkward) drinks. "Got anything on your mind?"
Lilith shrugged stiffly, not entirely sure how to respond. She hadn't exactly thought much about the talking part of their potential relationship. In fact, she hadn't thought much past seducing Mordecai. Frankly, she'd expected it would take much more time to get Mordecai to make a move. While, yes, Lilith was a siren and she could often manipulate her way into what ever she wanted from whomever she liked, the hunter was no push over when it came to woman. He knew how to keep his hands off and when to keep him mouth shut, even if he didn't want to. Needless to say, Lilith had been prepared for a long campaign of flirting, taunting, and showing just a little bit more skin then usual.
Mordecai had surprised her, snapping within just one week of her crusade. She was pleased with the man's early surrender, yet Lilith found it left her feeling a bit unprepared. Regardless how little time it had taken to court the hunter or how proud Lilith was with her quick victory, the siren reminded herself, it didn't mean a hell of a lot if the two couldn't get past this weird silence they found themselves stuck in.
For a minute Lilith fidgeted, chewing on her lip as if the action would encourage her mouth to open and form words. The only potential subjects that came to mind however seemed cliché, almost forced. (What was your day like? Hows the weather in the tundra? Shoot any bad-asses lately?) No, Lilith thought as she struggled not to frown, that kind of dialogue just seemed too domestic for them, for Pandora. As for more in-depth questions (So, where are you from? How do you spend your free time? What is you favorite method for taking down Hyperion loaders?) those probably wouldn't do them much good either. Over the years Lilith had already come to know everything the hunter was willing to share about his personal life, and Mordecai was just about as knowledgeable about the siren's past.
"You ah-" Just as Lilith was beginning to reconsider her dismissal for cliché inquiries (maybe awkward conversation would be better then awkward silence) Mordecai started hesitantly. "You want to go blow something up?"
"Oh fuck yeah."
After Lilith had set a satisfactory amount of stalkers on fire and Mordecai blew just as many heads off various creatures, the hunter and the siren ran into a bad-ass thresher just below the bridge heading into Opportunity. Initially, Mordecai had managed to piece together a plan, but that strategy went to hell as soon as Lilith phased herself into the creatures line of sight. Soon enough she opted to work on instinct as the threat of tentacle attacks made its way toward her.
"What the fuck do you think you are doing?" Mordecai eventually cursed over a linked echo channel. Her unpredictable movements quickly became too much of a hindrance, even for him. "I can't cover your ass if you make rash moves like that!"
Lilith only smirked at the irritation in his voice, blasting one of the thresher's limbs off as she did so. Yet to keep the peace (and for her own flirtatious enjoyment) Lilith hushed the hunter. "Oh I'm sure you'll have no problems tracking down my ass no matter where I phase it."
And she proved herself right about that. Regardless of where the siren maneuvered herself around the beast, Mordecai managed to keep its appendages from lashing out. By the time Lilith made the final blow, not even ten minutes into the battle, he'd shot out all the creatures miniature eyes.
"Do you always have to be that reckless?" Mordecai snorted when he came to join her by the alien monster's corpse, his rifle slung over his shoulder as he approached. Lilith would have considered his posture proud if not for the thinness of his features.
"Not sure if you noticed but my 'recklessness' helped to take this thing down. In record time I might add. I'd like to see even the fledgling vault hunters manage that."
"We did do a pretty damn good job." Mordecai admitted in a mumble. His expression visibly twitching as if he were trying to keep his tight features from breaking into a smirk. "But rushing in, guns blazing, without a plan, isn't a style I particularly enjoy."
As the siren watch her companion's face jerk behind his thick goggles as if to say 'I'm not amused' she realized that things didn't feel so awkward anymore. Since they'd left Overlook, nothing felt so forced. Conversation between kills came easier than it had and what silence fell settled calmly.
Maybe Lilith had been over thinking things at the beginning, her anxiety putting more weight on words than necessary. That seemed a logical explanation, but as the siren continued to watch Mordecai grumble about her battle preferences versus his another idea came to mind, a thought that felt like it hit closer to the mark.
Nothing about their relationship (thus far) could be comparable with others Lilith had in the past. While that didn't necessarily mean bad in the siren's mind, it did mean different. Perhaps Mordecai and Lilith just weren't the kind of couple that would regularly exchange mundane facts about their days to pass the time. Instead, maybe, they would be the type of couple that expressed themselves with action (even if said action involved killing Pandora's resident bad-asses).
"What's got you so happy?" Upon Mordecai's inquiry, Lilith noted that she was smiling. "If it's 'cuz you enjoying getting me flustered, I can easily let the next bad-ass we run into do unmentionable things to you."
"No, it's not that." Lilith laughed impishly, deliberately swaying her hips as she inched closer to him. Once close enough, the siren grabbed the hunter's collar with both hands and pulled him down to her height.
"What you think you are doing?!" Mordecai choked out in surprise as she clung onto him, fumbling his words, his skin flushing pink as she pressed herself fully against him.
"Shut up Mordecai." Lilith purred before she closed the last bit of distance between them. "Talking is overrated."
Fin... for now...
A/N:...So, think this is done. I still trying to decide whether to add one, more conclusive chapter. My beta thinks this is a good note to end on, so for now this is it... hope people have enjoyed and please review!
