2012- January
"Liv, what is Summer doing?" Alex asked as she walked into the kitchen to find her with the twins. Oliver and Eli were eating animal crackers while sitting at the dining room table.
Olivia looked up at her best friend. "Well, I don't know where she is. So, I don't know what she's doing." She chuckled when Alex rolled her eyes. "Why?"
Alex pointed towards the living room. "She's got a notepad and a pen and it hasn't left her site in the past month."
"Well, I'm pretty sure she's becoming the little writer Elliot and I thought she would be." Olivia grinned. She looked at Oliver and Eli before looking back at Alex. "He's missing their third birthday."
"Liv, Elliot didn't leave just to make things harder on everybody." Alex sighed, rubbing her friend's hand. "He needed to go for him. He shot a teenage girl."
"I know." Olivia nodded. "I watched him go through the pain. Trust me; I know." She ran a hand through her hair. "That night, when we came home, he held Summer for three hours. I held him the entire night. I'm not mad at him for leaving. I just... I miss him." She teared up.
Alex went around the counter and hugged her friend. "Liv, shhh, honey, it's okay. He's going to come back home."
Olivia pulled back. "Yeah, but he's staying for three months before he leaves again. We've spent almost everyday together since our junior year of high school. I've never been away from him for this long." She took a shaky breath. "And, what if he realizes he doesn't want me anymore?"
"Olivia, Elliot loves you more than anything else in this world. You two could not be more perfect for each other. No matter what you two do, you stick by each other. He organized your whole class to help him propose to you." Alex reminded her, making Olivia smile lightly. "You two have seventeen years of marriage together and six kids. If he ever tried to leave you, you'd hunt him down."
Olivia chuckled. "Thanks for that picture Alex." She went over and cleaned off the table, watching as Oliver and Eli hurried into the living room. "Hey, is there a reason why you aren't our ADA anymore?"
Alex bit her lip. "Yeah, and you aren't going to like your new ADA."
"Why? Who is it?" Olivia asked, furrowing her eyebrows.
Alex paused. "It's Sonya Paxton."
Olivia froze before turning to her friend. "Sonya Paxton? Is this the same Sonya Paxton that put my daughter's rapist away for thirty years when he raped eight girls and murdered six of them?"
"Maybe." Alex said, scared of how Olivia was going to react.
"She shouldn't even be able to be a lawyer! Mike should have been put away for life! He should have gotten the needle! He gets the luxury of sitting a cell for only thirty years!" Olivia growled, careful not to yell with her kids in the other room. "I want a new ADA."
"You can ask for one, but you need to have a really good reason." Alex sighed, picking up a banana and peeling it.
Olivia pulled her hair back into a ponytail. "She's a push over for rapists. How is that not good enough of a reason?"
Alex shook her head. "I would love to come back, but I'm reassigned. Casey can't. Look, Paxton might mess up again or she may do something else. Special victims isn't for everyone."
"True." Olivia sighed. She sat down on a bar stool after Alex did. "Anything new with you?"
Alex chuckled sadly. "Actually, yeah. There is something new." She took a deep breath. "John and I decided to give us another try."
"Oh my God!" Olivia groaned, dropping her head to the counter. Alex laughed. "You two have been married and divorced twice TO EACH OTHER! Haven't you tried everything with each other yet?"
Alex smiled. "John is the one for me. We just need to learn how to handle marriage without the pressure of staying together." She rubbed Olivia's back. "We want Summer to be our maid of honor if we get married again." Olivia chuckled and turned her head to look at Alex. "We've been dating since high school. I never really saw anybody besides John. It's nice to experience something different and then come home to him."
Olivia smiled lightly. "I have no idea what that feels like. I'm happy with Elliot. I don't need anything else."
"Sure you don't, Ms. Perfect." Alex grinned.
"It's Mrs. Stabler." Olivia smirked, making her friend laugh. Alex laid her head on Olivia's back. "I'm tired. Handling six kids is a lot of work."
"At least, you have a kid who can drive." Alex reminded her.
"That just makes me worry." Olivia said rolling her eyes. Alex laughed, wrapping her arms around Olivia.
March
Olivia sat at her desk, across from Nick's, as she looked over her DD5. Sonya was coming in soon and Olivia wanted get things done so she wouldn't have to see her. Somehow, she had managed to stay away from her as much as possible. She barely had to speak ten words to the woman. But, all of that changed when Olivia heard her kids' voices coming down the hallway. Olivia looked up and saw Dickie walk in holding Oliver. Summer was carrying Eli. Zack and Kendle were walking behind them. Dickie was in his football uniform and Summer was in her volleyball uniform. "Guys, what are you doing here?" Olivia asked, standing up.
"Dickie had football practice and my game is in a hour." Summer explained. "We play here. So, we drove out here to meet you."
"Okay, I was just about to leave." Olivia nodded. "Uh, I guess you guys haven't met Nick yet." She looked at Nick as he stood up. "Guys, this is my new partner, Nick Amaro. Nick, these are my kids." She started placing her hand on top of each child's head as she listed off their names. "This is Dickie, Summer, Kendle, Zack, Oliver, and Eli."
Nick smiled and shook each of their hands. "Nice to meet you guys. Your mom talks about you all the time. Let me see if I have this right." He rubbed his hands together. "Dickie is the football star. Summer is the volleyball girl. Kendle is the soccer whiz. And, Zack loves running."
Olivia smiled. "Yes, that is correct." She froze when she heard another voice.
"Well, look who the cat dragged in." Sonya smiled walking over. She stood next to Olivia and looked at the kids in front of her. "It's been so long. I don't know half of them."
"The last time you saw them, half of them hadn't been born yet." Olivia sighed. "You met Dickie, Summer, and Kendle. This is Zack, Oliver, and Eli."
Sonya smiled. "They are cute as buttons. Summer, look how much you've grown up! The last time I saw you, you were three years old."
Summer furrowed her eyebrows. "Uh, do I know you."
Dickie's memory suddenly kicked in. "Uh, Murmur, let's go wait in the car. We can let Mom finish her paperwork."
"Hold on." Summer said, holding up a hand. She turned back to Sonya. "How do you know me?"
"I was your lawyer, sweetie." Sonya smiled, putting a hand on Summer's shoulder.
Olivia stepped between her daughter and Sonya. "Murmur, honey, please go with your brothers down to the car. I'll be down in a couple of minutes."
Summer looked at her mother. "Why did I need a lawyer?"
"I'll explain it to you later." Olivia breathed before kissing her head. She ruffled Dickie's hair. "I'll be down soon." Dickie took Summer's arm lightly since she was still hesitating. They went into the hallway and out of sight. Olivia turned to Sonya. "Are you crazy?"
"I thought she knew!" Sonya reasoned. "She's, what, twelve?"
"Fourteen. She'll be fifteen this fall." Olivia huffed. "She's too young to understand."
Nick spoke up, unsure of what was going on. "What are you talking about?"
Olivia looked at him and sighed. "My daughter was taken when she was younger. We found her and a couple years later we found out that a friend of ours from high school kidnapped her." She ran a hand through her hair. "He raped her when he kidnapped her and every time she and our boys stayed with him. She spoke up when she was three. She doesn't remember what happened, but she does have nightmares about it." She teared up and willed her tears away. "Sonya, here, put him away for thirty years after he kidnapped eight girls, including my daughter, and killed six of them. He's fixated on Summer."
"You only put him away for thirty years?" Nick asked Sonya.
"He helped us catch other predators like him." Sonya reasoned, trying to brush off the subject.
"You put a guilty man in prison for thirty years when he killed six little girls under the age of three. He raped my daughter and every one of those other girls. He should've gotten the needle." Olivia gritted out.
Cragen walked out of his office then, his hands in his pockets. "Liv, go be with your kids. If Elliot calls, say hi for me."
Olivia nodded. "Thanks Don." She grabbed her purse and hurried out of the squad room. After watching Summer's game, the family headed to a diner to eat supper. Olivia noticed that Summer was distracted and Dickie was acting awfully protective of her. When they got home, Summer took her shower while Dickie, Kendle, and Zack sat down to watch a movie. Olivia took Eli and Oliver upstairs to go to bed. Olivia closed the door to their room quietly and saw Summer come out of her room. "Hey!"
"Hey." Summer greeted, folding her arms over her chest. "Who was that lady who was my lawyer? And, why did I need a lawyer?"
"Uh, she is Sonya Paxton and... can you trust me to tell you later? I just don't think you're ready to hear why." Olivia asked, putting her hands on her daughter's shoulders.
Summer let out a breath. "I guess, but I'm holding you to it." She paused. "Did you work my case?"
Olivia shook her head. "No, I didn't." She hugged her daughter, kissing her head. "When your dad and I think you're ready, we'll tell you. I promise."
"I miss him." Summer said into her mother's shoulder.
"I miss him too." Olivia breathed. She teared up and kissed her daughter's head. "He'll be home in a couple of months. He can see how much you've grown up since he last saw you."
Summer smiled lightly. "Yeah, he doesn't know that I'm writing all the time now." She wiped her eyes. "By the way, Dickie, Kendle, and I are going to go into the city on Saturday."
"Why?" Olivia asked, furrowing her eyebrows.
"Well, we're meeting William there. We're just going to hang out in the city." Summer explained. "We've been dating for two and a half years."
Olivia eyes widened. "It's been that long already!?" Summer laughed while nodding. "You must really like him."
Summer chuckled. "Like him? We've loved each other for two years now." She smirked. "Catch up, Mom."
Olivia shook her head. "Your father is not going to be happy about that when he comes home. How are Dickie and Carmela doing?"
"You've been out of the loop. They've been done for three months now. They split around Christmas time. Dickie is dating this chick named Carmen." Summer said before trotting downstairs.
"What?" Olivia asked herself. She shook her head and went downstairs to join her kids for a mindless movie.
June
"Hey Liv, I'm going to be home a little later than I expected." Elliot sighed as he talked to his wife over the iPad.
"How much later are we talking?" Olivia asked, resting on her stomach on their bed.
Elliot sighed. "A week or two." He groaned. "I want to come home. I miss you guys like crazy! I don't want to miss your thirty-fifth birthday either."
"I already missed yours." Olivia smiled lightly. "You didn't get any of your regular birthday presents."
Elliot whined. "I know! I was hoping I'd be home for your annual birthday gift. That's why I love my birthday!" Olivia chuckled, making him smile. "I've missed that laugh."
Olivia smiled. "I've missed you. The kids miss you a lot. Hey, Summer made enough money to go on that journalism trip after all."
"She did?" Elliot asked.
"Yeah, she said that she just got a job with Dickie, William, and Kendle." Olivia shrugged. "I don't know who would hire a fourteen year old. She said that they've been shoveling walkways for ten bucks each." She sighed. "I gotta find out what they are doing."
Elliot nodded. "That'd be a good idea. How's work going? Did Alex stay after all?"
Olivia paused. "Uh, no. We got a new ADA."
"Really? Do I know him?" Elliot asked.
"Well, we know her." Olivia sighed. "It's Sonya Paxton."
"Son-Son-Sonya Paxton? The woman that didn't give our daughter justice is now the new ADA of the Special Victims unit?" Elliot asked. Olivia nodded with a sad smile. "Has Summer met her?"
Olivia nodded yet again. "Oh yeah, Summer almost found out what Mike did to her. We both agreed you'd be here and she would be older." She ran a hand through her hair. "Sonya almost blew everything."
Elliot shook his head. "I really wish her license was taken away." He took a deep breath. "I gotta go, babe. I love you so much."
"I love you too. Be safe!" Olivia reminded him.
"I will. Bye Liv." His face left the small screen in her hands. Olivia sat up and placed the iPad onto her nightstand. She leaned against her headboard as she looked out the window. The moon was full and bright, beams shining through the shades. She turned off her lamp and laid down before closing her eyes.
A week later, she woke up to Zack and Kendle. "Mom! Wake up! You need to get dressed!" Zack said excitedly.
"Why is that?" Olivia asked as she rubbed her eyes.
"We have a surprise for you!" Zack grinned.
"Guys, I told you I didn't want anything for your dad and I's anniversary. He's not even here to celebrate it with me." Olivia protested.
Kendle rolled his eyes. "Mom, just get dressed up. We are taking you out. You are going to love our surprise."
Olivia sighed. "Fine, but if you guys are pulling something."
"Please, we only do that on your birthday." Zack said dramatically. He rushed out of her room with Kendle following him. Olivia chuckled, shaking her head, and got up. She picked out a simple white dress that she had gotten while shopping with Casey. It went just above her knee and was short sleeved. There was no back except for a strap at the top that went above her shoulder blades and below her neck. She wore white strappy heels that did wonders for her legs.
She walked downstairs to see her boys dressed in slacks and button up shirts. Her daughter was dressed in a light blue dress that was mid thigh and was semi long sleeve. "Wow, you guys are dressed to the nines."
"What about you?! Where did you get that? I want it!" Summer smiled as she moved her long, curled hair over to one shoulder.
Olivia chuckled. "Well, you are not getting it." She smiled when her daughter rolled her eyes. She brushed one of her own curls out of her face and looked at her boys. "You guys look sharp."
"Why thank you!" Zack said, bowing in front of his mother.
Dickie snickered at his little brother. "C'mon, I don't want to be late." He grabbed his keys off the counter and headed out to the car with his family. After a little bit, Kendle handed his mother a white blindfold.
"What is this for?" Olivia asked looking at the material.
"You can't see what your surprise is." Kendle chuckled before tying it around his mother's head, covering her eyes. "Can you see anything?"
Olivia shook her head, smiling. "No, I can't see a single thing. What are you guys planning?"
Summer chuckled. "It's a surprise for a reason."
Dickie pulled up to the hall they rented. Cars were parked everywhere and he could see his aunts and uncles inside talking to one another. He turned to his sister and signaled for her to get out. Summer got out of the car and opened the passenger door. She took her mother's arm. "Okay Mom, just take my hand and follow me." Olivia did as she was told. Dickie and Kendle got Eli and Oliver while Zack hurried to hold the door open. Summer led her mother into the large room with their family and friends inside. Alex and Casey took Eli and Oliver while Dickie and Kendle hurried over to the stage. Zack went over to John while Summer stood her mother in the center of the room. Slowly, Summer took the blindfold off of her mother. "Happy anniversary!" Everybody shouted when Olivia saw them.
"Oh my God!" Olivia chuckled, putting a hand over her mouth. She saw detectives from her unit and friends from their neighborhood. Simon, Elliot's siblings, and Bernie were all there, smiling at her.
"That's not all we have for you." Summer grinned before looking towards her family. Simon nodded at her before she hurried over to the stage where Dickie, Kendle, and William were. Simon went over to the front door, that was covered with a poster, and opened it. Olivia gasped when she saw who walked in.
Elliot stepped inside in his uniform. He smiled seeing his wife in the center of the room. She was glowing and he could tell that she was on the verge of crying from happiness. He saw the tears forming in her eyes as her smile grew. He could feel the tears burning the backs of his eyes. He walked towards her and cupped her face in his hands. Her hands went to his chest as a few tears fell. "Hey honey." He breathed.
"Hey." Olivia whispered back. She wrapped her arms around his neck as he wrapped his around her torso. They both heard people start clapping as they rocked from side to side slowly. Once the clapping quieted down, Elliot and Olivia turned when they heard music. On the stage, Summer stood in front of the microphone. Dickie was behind a drum set. Kendle was sitting at a piano and William had a guitar strapped over his shoulder. When the music started, Elliot and Olivia knew the song immediately. "They are playing our song."
"She's my kind of rain." Elliot nodded and kissed her head. "Let's dance."
Olivia smiled up at him before taking his hand and putting her other one on his shoulder. She grinned when his forehead dropped to hers. She pecked his lips right before Summer started singing the song. Elliot pulled Olivia closer to him when the chorus hit their ears. He started singing the chorus, making his voice crack. Olivia's head dropped back in laughter before she looked back at him so she could kiss him.
