"Nessa, Haruhi's a girl." My jaw dropped.
"As you can see," Kyoya began explaining, "Haruhi clearly enrolled in this school as a girl."
Kyoya and I were in the Host Club room looking at a copy of Haruhi's school records and birth certificate. I had to admit, it felt a bit stalkerish, but I was still too shocked to care. "She is the daughter of Ryoji and Kotoko Fujioka. Born on the 4th of February," Kyoya kept going on and on while I saw Tamaki sitting in a corner. The space around him was seemingly filled with a dark aura. Faintly, I heard the squeaking of a door. "Oh, Nessa, there you are!" I recognized the voice and slowly turned around to face it.
"You ran off so quickly. Are you feeling ok?" I turned around and paled. I began to back up, still shocked. "Nessa?" Haruhi began walking toward me.
"Uh…" I continued to back up until I hit something, or rather someone, "Oops!" The unfortunate person I ran into was Kyoya, who at the time had been holding Haruhi's file. Due to my clumsiness, those same papers were now scattered all over the floor in a matter of seconds. I stood frozen, watching Haruhi pick up one of the papers. Her birth certificate. Crap. "Um, I-I'm sorry! I uh didn't know you were a-a" I began. I pondered whether I should finish my sentence or not.
"A girl?" Haruhi finished, staring straight at me and gave a small smile before continuing, "Well I guess you know now." She laughed, "Sorry I had to keep it a secret."
I was about to reply, but was cut off by two familiar third-years. "So Nessa-Chan knows now?" I looked back toward the door, sure enough, Honey appeared, riding on Mori's shoulders.
"Yeah." Mori answered solemnly.
"Honey-Senpai? Mori-Senpai?" I briefly wondered how long they had been at the door, but pushed the question aside as Kyoya began taking again.
"I'm glad all of us are here now. I contacted the twins, telling them we are only having a meeting today. They may show up later, at least that's what Kaoru told me." He closed his phone and strode over to the couches.
"Meeting? And the twins are sick. Why would they show up-"
"We must have meeting Miss Sugiyama. We are still a club after all, which means meeting are mandatory. We have a lot to discuss today." He motioned for everyone to sit down and ignored my second statement. I began to feel uneasy. Kyoya had an unsettling tone that seemed to say, "You will be our main topic in this conversation."
"Miss Sugiyama, this meeting will involve you as well. Please sit down."
"Tamaki, get up. You've been sitting in that corner for the past fifteen minutes." All but one of us was sitting on couches around a large coffee table. Kyoya let out a frustrated sigh as he tried coaxing the Host Club king out of his corner. "Tamaki, get up."
Tamaki still refused and I got up, "May I try?"
"Go for it." Kyoya said dryly.
"Tamaki get your butt up! If you do, I'll let you sit right next to Haruhi!" I coaxed in a voice you'd use to talk to a puppy. His brain worked more or less like one. Tamaki immediately stood and I dragged him over to the empty spot next to Haruhi. "Good boy, now you behave!" I patted him on the head and he responded with a happy 'arf.' Yep definitely like a dog.
Once everyone was settled, Kyoya continued with the meeting. "As I expect everyone knows by now, Nessa has stumbled across Haruhi's true gender thanks to our president, Tamaki." Tamaki began to hug Haruhi tightly, whining about how cruel Kyoya was. Kyoya ignored him and turned to me. "I trust you can keep our secret. You see, Haruhi is indebted to us and I highly doubt you'd like the Suou family along side the Ootori, Hitachiin, Morinozuka, and Haninozuka families against you."
I chuckled nervously, he was blackmailing me, wasn't he. "I have no intention to tell."
Kyoya gave me a quick unconvincing smile before continuing, "I knew you wouldn't. Now, with that quick detail taken care of, it has come to my attention that, while our accounting is accurate, we've been losing income at an astonishing rate. I've noticed a steady decrease in business since Renge left and have come to the conclusion a new manager is needed. We should do a school wide search. If it fails to turn up with any good candidates, then we will conduct a nationwide search. Whomever gets the job will be given a house near Ouran and an academic scholarship. Any objections?"
I was surprised at the silence afterward. The plan was so far-fetched that Tamaki could've planned it.
Finally Honey spoke up, voicing an opinion that surprised me. "That's a nice plan, but why go to so much trouble when we have Nessa-Chan! She's perfect! She knows how to deal with us. Just look at how she handled Tama-Chan! Plus, the twins really seem to like her!" He giggled, "Right Takashi?"
"Yeah," he grunted.
"Uh, I'm flattered, but, I really don't think…"
"All in favor of Nessa becoming the new manager?" The room resounded with yes's and I began in sink farther into the cushions of the sofa I was sitting on. "Well Miss Sugiyama, what do you say? Care to join us?" Kyoya flashed a smile in which I saw just a hint of sincerity.
It was strange, but made me feel happy. I looked around more, the room was full of smiles. I felt my face light up as well and realized that maybe this wouldn't be as bad of an idea as I thought. Finally, I responded, "Yes."
Everyone cheered and yelled, "Welcome to the Host Club Nessa!"
Just then, we all heard the door open and saw two auburn haired twins standing side by side, shocked. My eyes went directly to Hikaru, who was already staring at me. Once our gazes met he turned around and began running. I followed him without thought.
"Hikaru! Wait!" I ran as fast as I could, seeing the image of his shocked expression in my head as I did so. This seemed to be the only chance I had to correct things. It was funny, the first time I'd met Hikaru, I wanted nothing to do with him, but now, now was different. I continued running now with warm tears burning my cheeks. I continued running, unsure where I was going, but knowing it didn't matter. "Hikaru!" I yelled again, wishing dearly for him to hear me and stop. My breathing became heavier and my legs began to ache. I knew I'd have to stop soon. The thought made me run faster. It made me run until it seemed the world stopped. I couldn't feel anything but an aching pound in my head. I couldn't see anything. I could only hear the faint sound of Hikaru yelling my name and his footsteps coming closer. "Hikaru…" I whispered, "Hikaru…"
