Okay, so I know I've been bad and I've updated for how many months? Argh, and I honestly have no excuse. It wasn't because I became bored with the story, it was just that I couldn't be…bothered…hey, I'm being truthful! So for all you lovely people, here is an update!

Chapter 10

Nick's Pov

It was an early Saturday morning when I heard a sharp knock on my door. Now because it was my day off, I was slightly annoyed because I didn't get to sleep in often so sucking it up, I grabbed my dressing grown and headed to the door. Upon opening it, the sight that greeted me could have broken hearts.

Katherine was stood on my porch, her eyes bloodshot as tears fell down from her eyes. It looked so natural for someone who smiled so often and brought such a positive vibe. Her hair was neatly combed still and her dressing was immaculate as always. It was a long sleeved blue dress which hugged her upper body and flared out at the waist, small white buttons going it. I glanced down to see that she indeed didn't have any shoes on. But that observation was done under a minute as I brought her into my arms as she cried her little heart out, clutching me as if I was some kind of life support.

There was one key thing I did notice.

The golden necklace was no longer around her neck.

I took her into the living room and sat her down on the armchair as I went into the kitchen to make some tea. No sound as made as the kettle boiled and whistled and I prepared a cup for us both. I took them back into the living room where I found her curled up in a foetal position as if she was trying to block out the world.

"Kat, I made some tea." I said softly, setting the tea cups down and walking over to pat her shoulder lightly. She murmured something incomprehensible before turning to look at me and smiled. "Thanks Nicky. Always to the rescue." She said, giving a small smile as she reached for a cup. I smiled back before sitting opposite her and reaching for one myself. We stayed in other comfortable silence as we sipped our teas but it was suddenly broken when Katherine whimpered and placed her cup down abruptly, the tea coming over the cup and messing the table.

"Katherine!" I said, worryingly as I stood up to quickly go over to her and held her in my arms once again, not caring about the mess. She began to sob again, big ugly ones showing me that she wasn't all delicate all the time. I could nothing as I stroked her back in soothing patterns and listened to her pained cries.

"It's not fair, Nick." She sobbed, her hands gripping my dressing grown as she hid her head in my chest. "Why can't I ever be happy? First my mother left me…and now Jay?"

"Jay? He would never leave you." I said, surely but comfortingly as I rocked her back and forth. "But he had Daisy now, right? He had what he wanted…why would he ever choose me over her? Perfection." The last word came out of her mouth bitterly as her sobs reduced to sniffles.

In some twisted way, it was true.

Gatsby had what he wanted now, perfection in his reach. Why would he want some mixed race girl born out of wedlock?

But Gatsby would never abandon Katherine because she is his life. She's the one who brought him out of his shell, made him smile and made him care. She was the one who made him love again and showed him a whole new world. Katherine may not believe this but…

She's means the world to Gatsby.

"You think so?" She questioned unsure and I flinched in surprise, not knowing that I said the last part out loud. "You do. And he wouldn't throw you away because of someone who walked into his life. Daisy maybe important to him but you, Katherine, are the one who's been with him until now and he's thankful." I continued, only stopping when Katherine nodded her head and a faint smile appeared on her lips.

It took a lot more convincing but Katherine came around and she fell asleep on the sofa, a small 'thank you Nick' on her lips.

I took this time to have my shower and get things sorted for a proper breakfast but my doorbell rang again and I went to go and check it.

Once I opened it, I was greeted with Gatsby who looked like he wasn't really himself.

I could tell why because clutched in his right hand was Katherine's necklace. He must have found it when he entered her room.

"Hello, Old Sport." He tried to sound happy but it seemed forced.

"Hello, Gatsby. What can I do for you on this fine day?" I asked politely as I stood in the doorway. Gatsby fidgeted before asking" Have you seen Katherine anywhere?" My eyes widened slightly. "Katherine?" I questioned before thinking of whether to tell she was inside my house. Gatsby nodded before saying" Yes, I went to go and see her this morning, only to find her gone. Please Old Sport…you haven't seen her, you?" He almost looked desperate.

I thought over it before making my decision and shaking my head. "I'm really sorry, Gatsby. I haven't seen her."

Gatsby looked at me for a moment and he could tell I was lying but he let it off, knowing why I was doing this. "Okay, well if you see her…please tell her to come home." He said, giving a small smile before waving and tucking the necklace securely in his pocket, walking down the path. I waved back before shutting the door and locking.

"Nick…who was that?"

She needs time.

To heal.

"No one. Just the postman."

Okay, Nick isn't evil or keeping them apart…he knows what he's doing…he's wise!
