Georgette wasn't sure what time it was when she woke up. Candice was still asleep on the couch next to Odilia. Georgette stood up and went up the stairs. She unlatched the door and pushed it open. Looking up all she could see was that the sky was blue. She walked up to the top and was shocked at the damage she saw. The house was completely gone. All that was left was the foundation and a pile of rubble. The small shed where the horses had been was also gone. The trees were bare and were either pulled up out of the ground or bent. She had never seen anything like it. She moved slowly through the yard and looked through the debris. They had grabbed the two bags full of their weapons and maps before leaving the house. But all of their food was gone. She heard someone walk up behind her. It was Candice.
"This is crazy," she said, looking around with wide eyes.
"We need food; all of it got left behind in the house, and the horses are gone."
"Do you think we can trust her?"
"Ya," said Georgette, "She let us stay here and she's nice. Doesn't look she's in the position to try and attack us. She's got lots of supplies down there and there's two of us and only one of her." They continued to look around a bit more before Georgette said "I'm gonna go out and hunt."
"How are you gonna get something without using a gun?"
"Gotta learn how to hunt with the spear at some point." She knew it would be hard. She'd have to be quiet, sneak up on animals and learn how to properly throw the spear. She didn't know how many animals would be around after the tornado but it was worth a shot.
Candice stayed behind and continued to look through the rubble. A few minutes after Georgette left Odilia came out.
"Whoa," she said, "That had to be a big twister."
"Have you ever seen one?"
"Ya," said Odilia, "We got them down in Louisiana every once in awhile, but nothin' as bad as this. We were more worried about the hurricanes."
"Hurricanes?" The word was foreign to Candice.
"Ya huge storms that flooded out our whole camp. That was about the only disadvantage of living there."
"Weren't there walkers?"
"Ya but we didn't really see them unless we went into town. The hurricanes wash a lot of them out and the gators ate them."
"Gators?"
"Ya big reptiles," She looked back at Candice, expecting her to know what she was talking about. Candice just shrugged. "You don't know what alligators are?" She shoke her head.
"They're big, green and scaly. They have huge teeth, could tear you to shreds if they get a hold of you. That's why not a lot of people went out at night." Suddenly she heard a voice behind her say
"Look what I found!" She turned around to see Georgette coming out of the woods. She led the two horses behind her. "They were in a field not far from here." Candice felt relieved. Without the horses it was going to take them longer to get to Georgia and it would be much more dangerous on foot.
"Thank God," said Candice, going over and petting one of the horses on the nose.
"You guys have been using horses to get around?"
"Ya," said Georgette, "Why what about you?"
"Follow me, hopefully it's still there." She headed towards a path in the woods.
Georgette tied the horses to the door handle of the underground shelter and followed Odilia.
"I don't know what I'm gonna do if it got blown away." Up ahead was another small shed similar to the one that had been in the yard. Odilia went in and the girls stood by the door and looked inside. Sitting in the back corner of the shed was an ATV. "The guy who led our group had a bunch of these things; he kept them in good condition. When I escaped I swiped one."
"You guys must have been in pretty good shape."
"We were," said Odilia, "Or that's what I thought." She saw the hurt on Odilia's face.
"If you don't mind me asking," said Georgette, "What happened to you?"
"The camp I used to be at seemed great, we were right on the bayou, had strong walls and great defense strategies. We never went hungry, always had everythin' we needed, it felt so safe. It was just me 'n my mom."
Odilia walked down the street, headed towards the outskirts of the town. She kept her hand tightly on the bag of marijuana, trying to keep it hidden from view. If her mother spotted her with it she'd try to reprimand her again. She didn't get why she made such a big fucking deal out of it. Vince had no problem with people getting high every once in awhile and ever since her friend Tommy had shown her where it was growing in the woods she'd been doing it. She saw her mom up ahead walking towards her, although she hadn't seen her yet. She was talking to the blonde woman Odilia often saw her with. She tried to keep she and her mom's social lives separate. She didn't need any more adults getting after her.
"Oh hey sweetie, where are you goin'?"
"Just to get some stuff from the store." Fuck, now she'd have to bring something back with her.
"Alright well be back before sunset, I'm makin' a big dinner." Odilia nodded and kept walking.
"See ya then."
She reached the edge of town five minutes later. She sat down behind one of the old brick buildings that no one was currently living in. She quickly rolled herself a blunt and lit it with her matches. She took a long drag and quickly let the lovely relaxed feeling take over. She closed her eyes and put her head back against the wall. Suddenly she felt a large pair of hands land on her shoulders. She opened her eyes to see Beau standing in front of her, his hands gripping her. He had a smirk on his face.
"What do you want kid?" He didn't answer her but continued to stare down at her. She felt a twinge of annoyance. She knew Beau a little bit. Sometimes he'd find her here and come join her. At parties she'd sometimes talk to him but he'd always made her feel a bit uneasy. He wasn't the type to get high or drunk and make a fool of himself. He'd get real quiet and lurk in corners, watch girls dance and say weird shit. Maybe if he wasn't such a creep he'd be able to find himself a girl. He was a pretty good looking guy. "Look I ain't in the mood to share like last week so go get your own pot." Out of nowhere she felt a fist collide with her face. It took her clouded brain a moment to register what had happened. There was blood on her face and Beau stood over her with a terrifying glint in his eye that she'd never seen before. "WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT FOR?!" He picked her up by the back of her coat and threw her against the wall with a bone crushing force. She started to scream and she felt a large hand cover her nose and mouth, cutting off her oxygen and voice. He kept a tight grip on her until she started to feel dizzy. She could feel her brain cells popping as the world faded away around her.
When she woke up she felt the cold concrete underneath her. She was lying on the floor and from what she could feel she was ass naked. Her head was pounding with pain. She slowly opened her eyes. It was dark but light dimly filtered in from somewhere. She was in a cellar. Her hands and feet were bound together by something but she was able to slowly sit up. She suddenly wished she had kept her eyes closed. She gasped in horror when she saw another woman chained next to her. She wasn't dead but in some sort of state of shock. Underneath the dirt and grime on her face she recognized her as one of the woman that had gone missing last week. Even more disturbing was the fact that both of her legs were gone and cauterized. Where the hell was she?
She started pulling against the ropes binding her feet and hands. She was tied to something behind her that she couldn't see. She started to scream, hoping someone would hear her.
"It's no use," said a voice. Beau stepped out of the shadows near the staircase. "Nobody can hear you down here."
"Let me out of here!"
"Now why would he do a thing like that?" To her surprise, Vince walked up next to him.
"What the hell is this?!"
"It's our little project," said Vince, "I need someone to take over when I'm gone."
"What are you doing this for?" The two men looked at each other. With a malicious grin Beau said
"It's fun." They started to move towards her. She continued to scream for her life and thrash around, trying to get loose.
"YOU'RE FUCKING SICKOS! WHEN I GET OUT OF HERE I'M GONNA TELL EVERYONE WHAT YOU'RE DOING!" To her she wasn't that surprised about Beau being a part of something like this but seeing Vince here shocked her. Their trusted leader who had seemed so caring and got along well with everyone. She saw Vince turn and go back up the stairs.
"I'll be right back," he said, "I'm going to get the new tools from the shed." It was now or never. If she was gonna get away she'd better do it when it was only Beau she had to face. She wasn't sure how she was gonna do it but she had to escape.
"Let's have some fun then while we wait for him to come back." She watched him strip down completely. She would rather die than let him rape her. He came over and crouched down until he was looking her in the eyes. Then he grabbed her throat and pushed her into the wall, the tendons in her neck crunching as he tightened his grip. He forced his lips onto hers. She bit down on his lower lip as hard as she could. He grunted in pain and jumped back, his lip bleeding.
"Stupid cunt!" He slapped her across the face, leaving her cheek stinging. She felt him grab her by the throat again with one hand. He quickly untied her legs and forced them apart. She saw her chance and with one powerful kick to the face, sent him back onto his ass. She got up and ran to the stairs. She briefly looked back to see him crouched over, holding his face. She heard him yell
"Not the face you bitch! Not the face!" She turned and dashed up the stairs. She pushed open the door at the top and was blinded by sunlight. How long had she been down there? She was in a kitchen and straight ahead across the room was the front door. She grabbed a knife from in the sink and ran outside. The shed Vince must have been talking about was on the other side of the yard, the door was closed and she wondered where the hell he could have gone. Suddenly a hand grabbed her from behind wrapping around her face. In her ear she heard Vince say
"Thought you could escape?" He turned her so she was facing him, pressing her against his body. She quickly kneed him right in the crotch. He yelled and fell to the ground. Her first thought was to go into town and scream for help. But when she saw Beau burst out the front door she knew there would be no getting past him. He looked like a monster, the wild look of bloodlust in his eyes. She turned and ran into the woods. She could feel him hot on her heels as she ran through the forest. She tried to think of some way to turn around and go back towards town but she knew Vince would be waiting for her. He'd make up some wild story about her; probably say he found her doing hardcore drugs in the woods, naked and saying crazy shit. And the terrible part was that everyone would believe him, even her own mother. Everyone thought she was the kid to stay away from and watch out for.
She saw the tall chain link fence coming up. She had no idea how she was gonna get over onto the other side without killing herself. The fence was extremely tall, although it didn't have barbed wire at the top the other side had large wooden logs that had been carved into spear points. There were three rows of them pointing away from the fence so that the walkers couldn't get close without getting impaled. She leapt up onto the fence and began to climb as fast she could. She reached the top and looked down to see him jump up and start to climb up after her. With no time to think she swung herself over the fence and dropped herself down. She landed on her back on one of the logs. She felt relieved when she realized she hadn't been impaled. She got up and made her way through the rows. As she ran into the woods she heard Beau yell out to her.
"If you ever come back I'll rip you and your mother to pieces!"
Georgette was shocked and disgusted at Odilia's story.
"So what'd you do after that?"
"I managed to circle back around and steal one of the ATVs. I didn't stick around for much longer though. If he saw me again he'd have my mother killed, I had to move quick." Georgette had thought her story was bad. Compared to Odilia's they had been living in heaven for the past several years. "What about you?"
"We lived in Wyoming for most our lives," said Georgette, "But we used to live in Georgia where our parents raised us. When I was three we got separated in an attack and a family friend escaped with us and took us to Wyoming."
"Are your parents dead?" Georgette shrugged and said
"We don't know, that's what we hope to find out." A small smile appeared on Odilia's face.
"You're lookin' for your parents and I want to save my mom. Do you think we could work out a deal?" Georgette liked the sound of what Odilia was formulating already. "How about I come with you to Georgia to help you look for your parents. When we're done there we can go down to Louisiana and get my mom."
"Sounds like a great idea!"
After finding more tack for the horses in a nearby barn left untouched by the tornado, they went back to the room to eat dinner. Odilia pulled out some meat and cooked it over a small fire outside. Once they had finished eating Odilia got up and said
"You're gonna love this," She started rummaging through an old wooden chest in the corner of the room. "I picked this up on my way here." She pulled out a huge bottle of liquor. Georgette had seen Angela have a drink with dinner but she had never tried it herself.
"It's vodka, never been opened. I found it in a warehouse in Northern Louisiana." She saw Georgette's curious look. "Never been drunk?" Georgette shoke her head.
"Well then this should be fun."
An hour later all three girls sat around the small table in the room. Both Georgette and Odilia were completely wasted. Candice had taken one sip of the liquor and hated it. It burned all the way down her throat. She watched her sister and Odilia play a card game. She listened to her sister let out loud whooping sound when she won the game. Odilia jumped up and scrambled to get all the cards in a stack again yelling
"Again! Again!" In slurred speech Georgette said
"You know Odilia I like you; you know, you're a pretty cool person. I'm glad we came here. Right Candice, aren't you glad too?" Georgette swung an army heavily around her shoulders, pulling her close.
"Ya," she said trying to duck underneath her arm and sit up straight again. Odilia's voice came out emotional
"I like you guys too. You know I haven't met one nice person this whole trip." She pointed at Georgette. "I knew you guys were good when I saw you. I knew it was gonna work." Georgette's eyes got wide and she said
"I feel so connected to you guys right now. Don't you feel this triangle happening right now? It's like one big triangle."
"Oh my God I feel it too," said Odilia, "It's great you guys." Candice didn't want to listen to their drunk conversation any longer. She got up from the table and said
"Well I'm pretty tired, I think I'm gonna head to bed." Georgette looked disappointed and said
"Awww really?"
"Ya," said Candice, "Odilia I'll take the right side of the couch if that's ok with you."
"You go right ahead honey," said Odilia, "You go for it." Candice laughed and said
"Whatever you say."
