With a shifting of his weight on each foot, Chen reached behind his head and scratched at it a bit before looking up at the water bender innocently.
"Uh…What's a spar?" He asked. The teenage girl looked back at him in surprise.
"It's where you fight one another, not by full strength, just enough to make it a challenge. You know like play fighting, except a little more serious, yet not as serious." She replied. Chen scratched the back of his head.
"Um…maybe we shouldn't…I-" He replied as his gaze began to wander off to the sides of his eyes. Korra blinked a couple times before replying.
"Aw come on Chen I'll take it easy on you ok?" She replied, as if she thought her title as an avatar was intimidating him.
"Korra…" He asked, his eyes almost seemed pleading. Giving him a pat on the back she ushered him forward before running to the other side of the training area. "Come on, I promise nothing will go wrong." She coaxed, a bright smile on her face. Chen gave her a weary look before finally giving a slight nod.
"Alright, here I come!" She yelled before running a few steps forward towards the boy. With a fearful stance he stepped back.
"W-wait Korra I changed my mind!-" Chen replied hastily, eyes wide like a panicked deer in headlights.
"Too late!" Korra smiled before releasing a ball of fire towards the boy.
With quick reaction, Chen leapt to the side out of the fire's way before he came into hand-to-hand combat with Korra. Avoiding her kicks and punches as she came forward, he did his best to avoid any type of offense, which sort of ticked Korra off as she grew frustrated with his dodging and evading technique.
"Stop Korra!" Chen nearly sounded as if he was begging. However this small reply was enough to distract Chen before Korra landed a hard kick on his chest, knocking him back a few feet. When he didn't move, Korra went from a sly victory grin to a slight panic.
"Shit.. Chen!" Korra called out. When he made no response, Korra ran over to him. "I thought you'd block that, Are you ok Chen?!" Korra asked as she knelt over his side.
Chen was quiet, almost seeming to be knocked out. Worried, Korra stood up and began to run off.
"Need to get a guard or something!" Korra thought out loud, suddenly, the sound of someone getting up stopped her in her tracks. Looking back, Korra saw Chen groan slightly, knelt over to one of his sides before he slowly stood up.
"Are you ok Chen?" Korra asked. "Geez I thought I kicked you pretty hard…did it knock you out of wind or something?" She asked. Chen didn't reply…
For a moment everything seemed awkwardly quiet before she finally took a step forward.
"Chen?" She called out.
Stretching his hands, the claws in response made a metallic -schling!- before he took off at a sprint towards Korra.
"Chen?!" Korra barely dodged as his claws came swooping in at her face, leaning back, she saw his stance switch quickly before he leaned on his left and rushed his leg beneath her already loosing balance legs from behind. Korra reacted quicker in her mind before letting herself fall on her back. With quick thinking, she rushed her right leg upwards, a flurry of flames releasing from her foot as she struck towards his back.
Going with the flow of his leg that swooped from under her, he managed to dodge her flames by a nick of his clothing before sliding back a couple inches.
The avatar leapt back up onto her feet in a ready stance again, her game face on as she watched him carefully.
"Whoa Chen what's wrong with you?" Korra asked slightly on edge. She hadn't noticed it before, however the quietness spooked her a bit as he remained still.
The black haired teen stood there with a very dull look, as if his whole personality had shifted from his innocence. His hands were at his sides as he stood there, before he slowly looked up at her. His pupils were dilated, his expression seeming very distant, as if he were in another world. A very grim expression was on his face, as if he was really meaning to hurt her.
"Chen…uh I think that's enough for today…Chen!" Korra had barely dodged as he came in again, his speed hadn't decreased at all, instead, it had become a lot faster.
His claws sliced the air around her as he went for her head, barely missing her by a knick, however his last hit had made some contact on her arm, slicing into her skin. Rolling onto the ground and out of reach, Korra leapt back a bit only to feel her leg cave in from a feeling of incredible pain. Looking down at her leg, she saw he had got her without her even knowing he struck her down there.
"Shhh-" Korra clenched her teeth before she looked up at the crazed guy. The bags under his eyes had become a shade darker as the eyelids widened, his blue cerulean gaze boring into hers as the appeared only with the intent to kill. With Claws extended, he leapt into the air above her, using the momentum to fall down towards her…
"Chen…?" Korra whispered, her eyes looking up at him with a puzzled and hurt look.
Just as he fell towards her, his eyes changed midstride, before his claw fell from an attack mode to a softer trying to catch himself phase. Korra looked up at him, their eyes still locked.
"KORRA!" A voice boomed.
At that instant, Chen was hit with a kick to his rib cage, sending him flying off towards the side, skidding across the ground and onto his side once more.
"Are you alright? Did he hurt you?" The teen with the red scarf asked. Korra seemed to shock at the moment before looking over at Chen who was laying on the ground, barely raising up onto his elbows. His face was hidden by the bangs from his hair. Mako stepped forward, flaming knives formed in his hands as his expression hardened.
"You wanna fight someone, fight me!" Mako yelled at Chen. The dark haired boy looked up towards Korra and Mako. His eyes and expression were full of sorrow and pain. He stood up. Mako raised his hands more up in a boxer's pose before narrowing his eyes, the knives a little longer than before. Chen took a step forward, while raising his hand up, his hand still inside the weapon claws. Looking down at his own hand, he saw blood on the tips, forcing him to shake his hand and throw the claw off. Korra watched this expression the boy made, confused by the actions he was making. What he did next and his expression that she saw from him hurt her internally.
"K-Korra…I didn't…I…" His voice shook a bit, before he took another step forward. This seemed to close for Mako before he let loose a ball of fire towards his direction. Getting hit directly in the chest, Chen was sent backwards, before he finally realized the situation and took off like a stray dog that had just got wounded, not looking back at all.
Once he was gone, Mako let the fire knives evaporate before he turned around and helped Korra stand up a bit. In reaction, Korra narrowed her eyes solemnly, still holding onto her arm as she watched where Chen had once been.
"Are you alright?" Mako asked. Korra shook her head. "I'm fine." She replied quietly yet sternly. Mako didn't seem to sense the aggravation in Korra's voice at first, before he rested his hands on her shoulders.
"Come on, we should go see-"
"I said I'm fine." Korra replied harshly before turning away from Mako. The firebender looked at her confusedly, unsure of what had just happened. He had no idea who Chen was or why Korra was so angry. With a sigh, he narrowed his eyes once more before looking back towards where the guy had left. After a Korra walked off, Mako did the same.
-Time lapse changes to Night-
After Korra healed herself up with her water, she turned to taking a hot bath before eating dinner. Tenzin and Bolin had both asked about her friend and what had happened to her however she merely stated that he had left without revealing what had happened. Mako was there, listening in on the conversation. After hearing that his name was Chen, and how he had rescued Korra according to Bolin, he seemed to have a bit of a tensed air to him. During dinner, he seemed to watch Korra a little more closely.
"So you met this guy in the forest?" Mako asked. Korra didn't respond, instead poking at her food with her fork. Mako snorted a bit. "No wonder he acted like a wild animal. You could smell him from 10 yards away." Mako scoffed, obviously trying to put down Chen in every way possible. Korra slammed her hands down on the table, startling everyone.
"Korra! What's gotten into you?" Tenzin asked.
"…Nothing. I just lost my apetite" Korra responded sourly before turning away and walking off. Bolin looked between Tenzin and Korra, before looking over at Mako and Asami. Asami shrugged in response before Bolin turned his attention back towards Korra as she walked out of the room. Bolin let out a small huff.
"Well that was a bit awkwaaard~" He whispered. Asami face-palmed herself before Mako stood up as well. "I'm tired…I'm going to sleep." Mako reported before walking out of the room as well. Everyone was pulled into a bit of confusion, the room staying that way even longer after the two had left.
Korra walked down the hallway, kicking at the air in front of her as flames release from her foot. With a huff of flames, she looked down at her door, stopping there with her hand on the handle. Her eyes narrowed slightly, becoming very sullen. She shouldn't have pushed Chen…what was she thinking? He had his reason…and she had ignored his warnings to stop. It was her fault…but what was wrong with him? In a way, it infuriated her how he just attacked her suddenly…but at the same time it confused her greatly…it seemed like he had gotten lost, according to the dilation in his eyes. Shaking her head, she pushed the door open.
Her eyes widened in surprise as she saw a small white tarp with a string wrapped around the top of it. On the side there was…a dead rabbitweasle?!
Korra stepped back a bit, surprised by the dead animal on her bed, she was hesitant to open the bag… Just who the hell left this here on her bed?!
After gulping a bit, she walked over to her bed, before untying the string. In surprise, she saw fruits all bunched up together. She looked at it curiously. Just who could have done this?
*drip drip*
The sound of something dripping caught her attention before she looked over to see a dark figure hiding behind her dresser, standing in the dark. Standing back with her hands up ready to fight, she immediately created fire in front of them, lighting up the room. As the light passed over the figure's face, it illuminated familiar blue eyes.
"Ch-Chen? What the? What are you doing here?!" Korra whispered harshly. Chen dropped to his hands and knees before burying his face into them.
"Im sorry! Im sorry Im sorry I'm sorry…I did not meant to hurt Korra…I not control myself…Im sorry…" Chen apologized over and over, a small whine coming from his throat. Korra took a step back.
"Chen? It's…It's alright…you don't have to apologize like that" Korra replied quietly, feeling a little on the awkward side before trying to get Chen to stand up. He in turn flinched at her touch, before his head slowly came up, yet only looked down at the ground.
"Miss Korra…I did not mean to hurt pretty tribe girl. Grandma always said that I shouldn't fight…but I did anyway…I'm sorry..." He murmured quietly. Korra looked at him, although she should have been freaked out, she actually felt a little sorry for the boy. Although his habits sort of seemed a little off to her…but she couldn't help feeling like she knew these types of actions that he exhibited.
"It's alright Chen, I forgive you. If anything, I should be saying sorry for making you fight me…" Korra replied quietly, her hand remaining on his back. He looked up at her, before his eyes grew calm again.
"…Still. Chen should not have done that…" He replied quietly.
"Hey Korra I heard a commotion-" A small voice came from outside her door before it opened up. Chen sat up hunched over with his hands holding him up. Immediately he jumped to the cabinet where he had recently hid and stayed behind it.
"Jinora! H-hey…" Korra replied. She stood in front of the doorway, trying to block the view, however the little girl seemed to look on both sides.
"Uh…Korra? Why is there a bag of fruits on your bed and…is that a rabbitweasle?!" Jinora seemed completely horrified by the animal. At that point, Chen peeked from behind the cabinet, though at the wrong time as Jinora caught a glimpse of him.
"D-da-mph!" Korra clamped her hand over Jinora's mouth before pulling her into her room and closing the door.
"Who…Who is that?!" Jinora asked in a surprised yet fearful kind of way. Korra let her go and took a few steps towards Chen.
"Jinora…this is Chen…Chen this is Jinora." The two went quiet before a silence filled the room.
After explaining how they met and what all had happened, seeing as no one else would listen like Jinora, Korra had let out a sigh.
"And that's when I found him in my room and the things on my bed." Korra explained. Jinora put a hand to her chin before thinking carefully about all of it.
"Well? What do you think?" Korra asked. Jinora was quiet for a while, before glancing over at Chen, who had fallen bored of the conversation and laid down curled up on the ground.
"Hm…he kind of sounds like…a polarbeardog."
"Like Naga?" Korra asked. At that moment it clicked. He did seem doglike from the beginning. His feral nature was finally making sense, the not sitting until he was allowed to, the innocence that was presented in his eyes, and even the submissive position he presented earlier.
"It all makes sense now, why didn't I see that before?" Korra groaned before smacking her forehead with her hand. Jinora smiled. "Yes. That's kind of how animals show their love or appreciation, by presents like the ones he gave you. Though since he is human and from what you said about him hurting you, its most likely an apology gift. Either way, I think it is really sweet!" Jinora replied. Korra gave a slight blush before looking over at Chen.
"Hey Korra…is that…blood on the ground?" Jinora asked as she looked over by the cabinet. The room was dark, having not turned on any lights because of how late it was. Korra squinted a bit before getting up and turning on a light. When she did, and what she saw next had shocked her. At that moment, Jinora gasped before getting up and taking a few steps back against the door.
"I-Is that?!...blood?" Jinora asked in fear. Korra looked down at Chen who was breathing slightly heavily. She had wondered why he was breathing like that until she saw that the blood lead from the area he had been standing to where he was laying. Korra went over and shook his shoulder.
"Chen? Chen!" Korra called, arousing the boy. Looking up, he glanced around. "Is it morning?...ugh…" He murmured before flinching and holding his hands over his chest a little more. Korra slowly pulled him over to his back.
"Chen lay back-"
"N-no I'm okay…I just … need rest." He murmured, yet was too weak to fight the girl before he laid back.
Since the fabric was so thin anyway, Korra was able to easily tear his shirt off before revealing a large 3rd degree burn on his chest, one of which blood dripped from. Jinora let out another gasp, hands covering her mouth. Korra narrowed her eyes before grabbing water from a nearby glass and beginning her healing procedures.
"Jinora, go get the first aid kit, hurry!" Korra called. Jinora nodded before leaving the room. While she worked at his chest, the thoughts couldn't help but run through her mind. For some reason, she hated that Mako had hurt him in the first place. Chen groaned slightly at the touch, tilting his head slightly to the side.
"Chen…why didn't you tell me you were hurt?" Korra asked quietly. The boy flinched before opening his eyes and looking at her. "Chen didn't want to burden you…be-sides only small…wound. It would have healed. Just needed rest…" He replied, though it was obvious he was no medical expert. Korra's eyebrows knitted together in seriousness before the wound began slowly but surely healing.
"It's alright Chen…I'll heal you up, I promise." Korra murmured. Chen's expression which looked pained immediately shifted to a surprised look before he turned his attention back to the waterbender. Laying his head back again, he looked off into a different direction, before closing his eyes.
"Thank you…Miss Korra." He murmured quietly.
