They woke up the next morning to find the trap they had set up had caught a deer. Georgette felt relieved, knowing it would be enough to feed all three of them and keep the leftovers. After they had packed everything back up they took a look at the map again, marking certain towns and roads they should get to if they were to correctly cross the land horizontal to the city and land back on the main road.
Georgette felt fine and decided to ride on her horse. They quickly got back on the road and headed out. They determined which direction was east with Odilia's compass and found themselves facing the woods instead getting back on the road. Odilia's ATV easily ripped through the tough terrain and the horses seemed to have no problem handling it either. Georgette kept her eyes open. Through the trees she could see the backs of houses. There were about five of them in a row. What was life like before the walkers plagued the earth? Angela had told her of the widespread suicide that had gone on when it first happened. Of course Georgette had felt miserable and hopeless in the past but she had never thought about killing herself. This was their reality. They'd lived this way their whole life and knew nothing else. There was nothing else to compare their situation too.
Georgette explored her new home. It was much bigger than the cabin back in Georgia. The kitchen was huge and their was a living room with comfy couches and a fireplace. She had never lived in such a place before.
"This was the house my family and I lived in," said Angela, "It looks as good as it did when we left."
"It's amazing," said Georgette, still looking around with wide green eyes. Last night they had slept on the couch and Angela had told them she was working on a surprise for them for the next day. "Come on upstairs, I'll show you." She slowly climbed the stairs after Angela and came into a long hallway. There were four doors on the right side of the hallway. "Candice is already cozy in her new room." They walked down to the door furthest away and Angela pushed it open. The room was dark but Georgette could see a crib across from them on the other side of the room. She moved slowly towards it and peeked in to see Candice asleep inside. She walked back over and said
"Where will I be sleeping?" Angela closed the door and moved onto the door next to Candice's.
"This will be your new room." She pushed the door open and Georgette gasped. The walls were pink. A full sized bed sat between two windows where sunlight poured in. The bed had a white canopy over it and pink sheets. She took a few steps in the room and saw a dollhouse sitting over on one side, along with a dresser and mirror. Back at the cabin Georgette had shared a room with her sister. Her mother had decorated the walls with things like pink paper butterflies and drawings they'd made themselves. Her daddy had brought home pink sheets for her for her bed but the bed had been much smaller than this one. She couldn't contain herself. She ran and jumped up onto the bed, lying down completely spread out on it. "Used to be my daughter's room," said Angela, "And I pulled out her old crib from the basement for Candice."
"This is so awesome!" Georgette rolled over and noticed a picture sitting on the nightstand. It was of Angela and a pretty little brunette girl. Angela saw her looking and said
"That was my daughter, Sarah." Georgette picked up the picture and looked at it closely. Angela looked much younger and happier. The little girl was probably a little bit older then she was. She also looked extremely happy.
"Your daughter was very pretty," said Georgette, looking back and smiling at her. Her mom had told her Angela lost her daughter. Georgette hadn't experienced any loss in her life then but now she understood how terrible it felt. "I'm sorry about what happened to her." Angela was looking down at the floor, her eyes shining with tears. Georgette got off the bed and slowly made her way over to her. She wrapped herself around her leg in a hug and said "It'll be ok Angela, we're safe now."
The sun was setting, the shadows of the gnarled and twisted trees were cast across the ground and the swamp in front of them. She and Donna were sitting in two lawn chairs down by the river. There was a table between them with a plate of frog legs they'd caught and cooked themselves. Years ago the idea of eating frogs made her squeamish but today they were one of her favorite snacks. She hadn't known a swamp could provide them with so much food. Turtle, gator, frogs, crawfish, and her favorite was boiled garfish with onions, salt, pepper and garlic.
"It's beautiful isn't it." Beth looked up when Donna spoke.
"Hm?"
"The swamp."
"I guess."
"With everythin' that's happened the swamp hasn't changed. Of course the gator population exploded but nature itself has stayed the same."
"I wouldn't know," she said, "Georgia wasn't full of swamps."
"I've lived on the bayou since I was a baby," said Donna, "I spent most of my days huntin' and fishin'. I remember my grandaddy took me out. He couldn't even speak english, just Cajun French. I wanted to raise Odilia the same way." Beth could hear the sadness in her voice. She knew what she was going through, she'd lost two daughters. When Donna got up and said goodnight she knew she needed alone time and didn't go after her. She remained out by the river. The sun had almost set now and the light between the trees was fading. She put her head back and closed her eyes, listening to the crickets chirp around her. She couldn't help but think that Daryl would love it here. There were so many places to hunt he'd have a field day.
She slowly got up out of her chair, she knew Vince wanted everyone in at dark but she didn't care. She'd be safe inside the boat. She went down the shore and unlatched one of the boats from the dock. Then she got inside and started to row herself out. The river was long and windy and eventually led out to the large cove where they often hunted. The swamp got darker and darker. Soon she only had the moonlight to lead her. The sound of the crickets had gotten louder and much more numerous. Every once in awhile she'd hear the splash of a gator sliding into the water. It didn't worry her. They'd never had a boat flipped before and she knew she was safe as long as kept all her limbs inside the boat. They rarely saw any walkers around the swamp. They'd fall in and get eaten or get stuck in the mud. The boat moved at a steady pace and she kept the pace of her rowing going. She had grown strong and didn't depend on anyone but herself. After years of hard work and taking care of most things herself she was in top shape. Her body showed it. Her arms and stomach muscles were well defined and her skin had been permanently tanned by working out in the Louisiana sun. Of course she wasn't body-builder status. She looked like those women on those exercise tapes her mom used to do before the walkers had risen. She wondered what Daryl would think of her. He'd always insisted on being the one to do the heavy work. She didn't have a problem with it as she liked spending time with her daughters. Back then she gladly did the cooking and cleaning. She often thought about how many other children they could of had. She had always wanted a big family, maybe five or six kids. She would of done well as a fifties housewife but things had changed.
She continued to row until she reached the entrance. The moon was high in the sky and nearly full. It lit up the cove with a silvery light. She let the boat drift a bit as she thought about her previous life. She lay down on one of the benches and closed her eyes, seeing his face. Her thoughts were broken when she heard the sound of another boat nearby. The soft sound of somebody rowing through the water caught her attention. She sat up and looked around. She didn't see anything at first but then out of the shadows came a small boat like her own. There were two people and they were leaving one of the many rivers that wove through the land and attached to the cove. She narrowed her eyes, trying to make out who it was. It took her a minute to realize it was Vince and her son. What the hell were they doing here? She picked up her oars and rowed over to them. Vince looked pissed when he saw it was her.
"What are you doing out here past curfew?!" Beth felt a flare of anger and said
"I could ask you the same thing!"
"Just some nightly training," he said, putting his hand on Beau's shoulder.
"I don't buy that!" Vince was strict about people staying in at night.
"Well think what you want." She stood there, her arms still crossed, her gaze still stern.
"Relax sweetheart, I just wanna make sure you stay safe."
"I'm nobody's sweetheart," she said, feeling angry again. All the while Beau just sat and watched Vince and his mom talk it out.
"Here attach your boat to mine, I'll row you home."
"No thanks," she said, "I can do it myself." She sat back down in the boat and turned her boat around, headed back towards their river. She could hear Beau and Vince following behind. They were up to something, and she was determined to figure out what it was. She'd spent to long with her head buried in the sand.
They moved through the forest at a slower pace than Georgette would of liked. The ground continued to get even rockier and soon they found themselves walking beside a steep drop of rocks to the left and a hill almost just as steep to the right. She had never liked heights and she tried to keep her eyes forward. Her unoccupied mind kept going back to the fact that if her horse took one wrong step, they'd both go tumbling over the side. She distracted herself by facing forward. She let her mind wander off and jumped out of her day dreaming when something fell in front of Odilia at the front. She heard her yell
"Shit!" It had been a walker that fell. It slowly got back up on its feet, looking at them hungrily. Odilia was quick to pull out her knife and stab it in the head, sending it over the side of the cliff. But they weren't through it yet. Georgette looked up the steep hill and saw several more tumbling towards them, blood and limbs getting torn off on the way down. Odilia sped forward and Georgette kicked her horse into a fast canter, trying not to get too close to Candice. She saw the end of the trail where it cut off into the woods and left the cliff side behind.
Just as they were about to reach the end she saw a walker come and hit Odilia. It was almost slow motion as the walker knocked her off the ATV. The walker continued to go and fell down over the cliff side. Odilia went after it. Georgette screamed and leapt off her horse, running over to where she had fell. She felt Candice come to her side as they both looked down over the cliff. She felt relieved when she saw Odilia clinging onto a rock jutting out from the cliff side. She was too far down for Georgette to reach over and pull her up. They needed a rope. Odilia had the wire she used for traps but there was no way they'd be able to lift her up with that. There would be no way for her to get a grip on it. She had to find rope somewhere.
"Hold on tight, I gotta go find some rope!" She got up off her feet and started running back down the trail. the houses they had passed weren't that far back. There had to be something there she could use. Candice called to her
"Where are you going?!"
"To find something to pull her up!"
Candice watched her sister go, torn on what she should do. She watched Odilia pull herself up so she was sitting on the rocky outcrop.
"Georgette's going to find something to pull you up, just hang tight."
"I'll be fine," said Odilia, "But she better be back by nightfall, don't wanna be stuck out here all night." Candice looked up at the sky to see the sun's position. It was probably around 2:00, meaning they only had about three or four hours left of sunlight. The other concern was that the rock may not be able to hold Odilia for long, and crumble away underneath her. Candice stood up and looked for anymore walkers. Luckily they had stopped coming over the hill and everything was clear. She walked the two horses off the trail just ahead, untacked them, tied them to a tree and got them some water to drink. She went back over to the cliff and sat down to watch Odilia.

The first twelve minutes with Beth and Daryl made my week lol. Anyway I'm planning on making some more banners for this story, individual ones for each character to go with the main cover photo I have posted on my profile. I'll let you know when they're posted! Thanks for reading :)
