Hello! I'm back! At least for a little while...
Chapter 13: Ace
"There's a city up ahead!" I called down to Red from the height of my Force jump.
"It's called Viridian City!" he yelled back. "I tested to become the gym leader there once."
"Did you fail, so you had to start coaching us Jedi instead?"
"No, I passed with flying colors, but had to turn it down because of my injuries from before. My friend Blue took over. And then, I agreed to teach Jedi because I wanted to."
"Seriously, what's up with colors?" I muttered to myself as I landed, resolving to run the rest of the way so no one would see who I was. Two years of secret training was burned, etched, and sealed into my mind, refusing to leave.
"Okay, when we get to the city, act casual, all right? The people will know me, but not you, so we'll just have to pretend you're from another region, visiting for a day or two, then going on to some relative. Your secretive Jedi instincts will serve you well. I'm just going to lead you around town, and we'll stay the night at the Pokémon Center, and hopefully no one will question us. They've kind of gotten used to me popping in with strangers."
"What? I can't stay the night! I told my parents I'd be home before nighttime!"
"Don't worry, the Jedi always make everything fine with the families. If they told you that you'd be home tonight, then you'll be home tonight somehow. I don't know how they do it though, so just get on with the mission at hand, okay?"
I sighed, then proceeded to interrogate him about my region, my relatives I would be visiting, and my past. When we got to the edge of the city, I dramatically dropped on the ground in an all-too-familiar posture and panted my lungs out. "Seriously Red, why wouldn't you let me on your bicycle for at least part of the time? I'm dead tired, and I need to go somewhere and sleep now." Come on, Red. Pick up the hint and take me to the Pokémon Center where I don't have to interact with anyone. I thought.
"Uh… okay…" That was what I got, paired with a confused look.
"Hey Red! You've got another visitor?" A small boy came out from behind a building. "I was hoping that maybe you could help me train my Pikachu like yours…" He looked so sad and disappointed. I sat up, and said, "I can find the Pokémon Center and go rest there while you help him out."
"No, you'll never find it without me. Wait right here kid, okay? As soon as I get Ace to the Center, I'll come back and help you, but right now she's exhausted. Do you mind waiting a couple of minutes?"
"Okay!" The little boy hopped around happily with his little Pikachu. Red's Pika smiled and waved to it, then bounded off to follow Red.
"That was really nice of you, you know." I said, still pretending to be weary and droopy.
"Ah, I guess it's just my personality. I've been sought after for battles, and everyone in the region knows my name and where I live, so I've answered thousands of battle letters. I started correcting errors during those battles, and it got out that I'd teach anyone who wanted to be taught. And I just can't turn anyone down. It's my duty, you know?"
"What duty?"
"My duty as Champion of the Kanto Region."
"Excuse my ignorance, but what is that?"
"It means I've beaten the best trainers in the region, so by default, I am the best trainer in the region. Professor Oak even told me I'm the "Fighter" personality, meaning, I've got good battle skills, and typically do the best at battling. You learned how to battle from me, next you'll learn how to care for and love your Pokémon from the "Healer" of our group. Then you'll learn how to train them from the best "Trainer of Pokémon" around."
"I suppose they're all named after colors too?"
"Yeah, we all are."
"Of course you are," I said sarcastically, rolling my eyes.
